I was out and about in the beautiful city of Apple Valley raiding different antique and thrift stores when I stumbled upon this hidden gem. There's a big selection of clothes, household appliances, furniture and media room with VHS, CDs, and DVDs. My boyfriend and I split up to cover more ground and naturally, my toddler instantly found toys she wanted. It just so happens that on that specific day they were doing a "fill a bag for $5" deal on clothing. They provide you with a plastic bag and now all you have to do is find things that make you happy. It was easy to find a lot of things I liked and things in my size. What can I say? I'm a lucky shorty. Oh but the fun doesn't stop there. Right across from the thrifty there's ANOTHER store. Score! Are you a little trendy, classy and edgy? Then you'll love it here. The pictures speak for themselves. There's a gift for everyone on your Christmas list and the prices are reasonable. Who knew you could do all your Christmas shopping in one spot? Checkmate. Give them a try and convince me you left empty handed. Doubt it!

Prices are typically pretty good, although several different people do the pricing so sometimes you can find some items that are excellently priced and then find others that are higher than would be expected. Also it's not a particularly large space, but they have a great selection of goodies to browse. I typically find at least one or two things to purchase whenever I visit. However, some of the ladies that volunteer there aren't very friendly or helpful. I've chatted with a few that are super sweet and rays of sunshine, but others seem annoyed if you ask them questions or can be short with you. During last visit with friends, for example, we had strange encounters with multiple employees. One of my friends was ready to check out and (unbeknownst to her) was not in line properly. The cashier, rather than make eye contact with my friend and tell her the line forms this way, completely ignored her and moved on to the next customer, who was in the correct spot, but got in line after my friend. And then the cashier was rude to my friend when she asked her about it. I also had a large amount of items in my basket and asked if I could put it behind the counter so I could continue shopping more comfortably. The lady I asked kind of scoffed and said no we don't do that, with no further explanation. Very strange since I've done this at many other thrift stores and there is a lot of open area behind the counter. But whatever. As I said I will still continue to shop here, just know that you may not always have the best customer service experience while visiting the store. I definitely approve of their maintenance of the store, the quality of the items and their mission, so I will still visit.

What a gem to find such a small thrift store, but Big Bear Valley Hummingbird project is not…read moresomething you see out of Big Bear Blvd., named as such since the signage outside is not easy to read. I am so glad that I dropped in, and honestly I could have been here for awhile. The minute you enter, there are tons of clothing, but when looking for specific items that are antiques (ish) then you are in for a treat. People might think the thrift store is not organized but honestly they all have the same look to me & the scent of old bookstores/garage smell. But when I am in the mood to look for old cast iron objects specially old soap dishes, or anything that appears retro, this place has them. And the man who was helping me was quite nice and lucky me 50% off as it was labor day special. And I liked another item, that I came back to purchase the Native American Headdress (war bonnet). I was lucky it was still there because it caught my attention, hesitant because it is definitely an honor to find it and my hands drew me to the item when I was purchasing a cast iron bird/fountain. Also awhile back I did come down a few years ago and a lady who worked there was giving us free books. Also showing off the items that I was happy with! I went to Doves and the Fun Stuff thrift store and could not find anything remotely close to what I found at Hummingbird. There was also Mountain Mod and that place was cool but only if you want to spend $25-maybe even $500+ for things that probably can be found in estate sales. Definitely checking out Hummingbird on my next trip!
