What a gem to find such a small thrift store, but Big Bear Valley Hummingbird project is not something you see out of Big Bear Blvd., named as such since the signage outside is not easy to read. I am so glad that I dropped in, and honestly I could have been here for awhile. The minute you enter, there are tons of clothing, but when looking for specific items that are antiques (ish) then you are in for a treat. People might think the thrift store is not organized but honestly they all have the same look to me & the scent of old bookstores/garage smell. But when I am in the mood to look for old cast iron objects specially old soap dishes, or anything that appears retro, this place has them. And the man who was helping me was quite nice and lucky me 50% off as it was labor day special. And I liked another item, that I came back to purchase the Native American Headdress (war bonnet). I was lucky it was still there because it caught my attention, hesitant because it is definitely an honor to find it and my hands drew me to the item when I was purchasing a cast iron bird/fountain. Also awhile back I did come down a few years ago and a lady who worked there was giving us free books. Also showing off the items that I was happy with! I went to Doves and the Fun Stuff thrift store and could not find anything remotely close to what I found at Hummingbird. There was also Mountain Mod and that place was cool but only if you want to spend $25-maybe even $500+ for things that probably can be found in estate sales. Buyer beware! I just moved here and was interested in volunteering for a non profit and also wanted to donate the contents of my deceased mom's home. The manager was not in. While there, I purchased a $35.00 stereo with a guarantee. Debbie, a very pleasant salesclerk Rang me up. I received a receipt. The 3 CD player did not work consistently within a day or two. I went to the store three times to return it. I was told that I needed to speak to Elaine, the manager. I found her today. She is the most unpleasant woman I have met in a long time. She questioned me as though I was stealing something. I explained the situation, asked her if she would want to compromise as the CD player does not work consistently, that the door does not open unless one unplugs and plugs it in again, but the radio FM and AM work. I asked if she would give me $15.00 back instead of $35, that I would buy a different CD player to connect to it. She looked at my 3 pc components and insinuated that the stereo player did not come from her store as she had never seen it before. I had to defend myself. I am not a thief, neither do I take things back to stores for cash with fraudulent pretenses. It looked new now, and anyone could tell that I would not damage it. On the contrary. I had spent a long time cleaning and polishing it. (She later screamed that she was never there at that store so what would she know?) She ignored me after a few minutes, I was then spoken about in the 3rd person until I ran out of patience. She was so rude! Not only to me, but the salesperson there, who was a sweetheart. Her name is Shayanne. (Sp?). She appeared embarrassed at her boss's bad attitude. I asked the nasty woman who her superior was as I did not appreciate the insinuation that I was trying to cheat her out of $35.00 by bringing back a stereo system I did not buy there, for which she had a receipt in her hand, given to her by me, signed sealed, delivered and dated by her own employee. She asked me "who in the hell I think I am, she is her own boss". I demanded my money back and questioned the legitimacy of her function as a non profit. If I had donated a broken stereo I would have resented her not selling it for a negotiated price. She knows, according to the receipt and the wording, that it was sold to me as fully functioning, not "as is". She, of course, preferred it on her shelf. I think, as long as you throw money at this nasty woman she will sell to you, but her warranty or guarantee is only granted with a nasty tit for tat. I commend the women who can work for her. I was honestly kind of horrified by the lack of organization and total disarray. I can't speak to quality or price point as I stayed only ten minutes, realizing the amount of labor it would take to locate anything by size. Thrift stores are my forte. Why do you ask? I've been to a zillion. My family has a thrift store addiction. It all began with my grandma, got crazier with my mother, stuck to me and may just be passed down to my daughter. Let's begin with the fact that I found lots of treasures. Kids clothes galore, including gap and children place. A New York and company sweater dress. Beautiful black with fur winter coat. Forever 21 puffy jacket. Calvin Klein brown high heel boots. A wine rack still marked with the original price tag of 60 for 16. The quality of clothes is great and the prices you can't beat. I didn't find any jeans but they are super cheap. I went on Black Friday an it was buy one get one free for children's clothes. I'm not sure what deals they have usually but my grandmother says there's always specials. The only down side which doesn't bug me but may big others is the clutter. The store is jam packed with items which makes it a little difficult to maneuver. I don't mind because I have years of experience. You don't find the magic without getting your hands dirty digging and looking through. People need to have patience. The best part is this store is a non profit organization that benefits the city of big bear. They donate food, help citizens with clothes and raise money to create a scholarship for students graduating from high school. This is the type of places I want my money going to. We came up to Big Bear for my husband's birthday with our kids. The kids wanted to go sledding but we had no snow gear. We looked this store up online and they were one of the only stores open. We got there and all four of us were able to get something to keep us warm and dry while playing in the snow. Not just that they had really great prices on even some of their name brand snow stuff. Pretty chaotic overstuffed space, with some organization, by bunching things like kitchen items in one location.

Great time to get nice winter jackets/boots, ski clothes and equipment at a reasonable price compared to other stores. I purchased a 200.00 jacket for 20.00 for my husband. The quality is great. They had great products at great prices. Coming from the La/OC area I am used to high prices at thrift store, so this was a nice change. The ladies working at the store when we visited were the kindest individuals. They engaged us in conversation for a long time and were just so sweet. This place is ok. It's very crowded and small which definitely makes it harder to find things. It has moments were it's not kid friendly and has made comments that made me feel unwanted because I had a child with me. Also shadows kids around even when they're with me. Told my kid not to touch something child related they were checking out to buy... and this has resulted in us leaving and/or if we're with family we learned to just have them wait outside which is a bummer. Mind you my kids are the type of kids that help people across the street, hold doors open for you, yes ma'am/no ma'am, mind their manners etc so they're not in the store doing anything outrageously disrespectful, just walking around and picking up a toy (or book) or two. Then another time they were nice about kids and even had them look in a box of random stuff to pick something for free. Maybe it's just the person running the show that day, not sure. We have found some things in here but they are priced a little on the high side. Example was a Ikea doll bed without the mattress/bedding (it normally comes with this) was priced the same as in-store/brand new. I showed the lady and asked if she could lower the price accordingly and she said no. I get it, it's their store and they can price it however they want but I mean, come on, it wasn't fair and they didn't care. read more

I love that this place gives their profits to schools in need. However, when went there to shop, the lady at the front desk stayed on her phone for a good 20 minutes ignoring me. She wasn't very open to negotiating either. The place is a mess. I had to climb and crawl around to get under piles to find what I need. I expect a thrift store to be somewhat unorganized and pile-y but this was kind of dangerous. But, by the end, I found some amazing stuff including a chandelier that I will repaint and re-wire.
