I'm really disappointed with my experience today at Famous Toastery in the University area. This is usually one of my favorite breakfast spots, especially the Belmont location, so this visit was frustrating from start to finish. When my nephew and I walked in, we waited about 10-15 minutes before anyone even greeted us, despite the restaurant not being busy. Once we were seated, I immediately felt rushed for no reason. I was never offered a kids menu for my nephew, and when I asked questions about the menu, the server acted like answering them was an inconvenience. After ordering, I asked for coffee, but overall there was very little hospitality or customer service. Even the manager, who brought out our drinks, never acknowledged us or said a word. No one came back to check on us or refill my coffee. Things got worse when our food was delivered to the wrong table first. The manager delivered it incorrectly, then the server came back, grabbed the plates from the other table, and brought them to us. By the time it reached our table, the food was cold, and honestly, I was uncomfortable eating food that had already been placed at another table. I later asked for extra syrup, and again the manager just dropped it on the table and walked away without saying anything. The entire experience lacked basic customer service, communication, and professionalism. I'll start by saying that perhaps our waitress was having a bad day. She was nice but very inattentive. We had a late breakfast and they forgot to bring my husband's potatoes. No big deal. He asked for them and they brought it. He had also ordered a margarita flight at the beginning of our visit and I ordered an Irish coffee. We received two Irish coffees but no flight. We asked a minimum of 3 times to two different people and still no flight. Our waitress said she was going to check on it but came back 5 seconds later to check on another table. At the end of our meal someone finally brought the flight out but at that point the meal was over and we were ready to just leave so we ended up not taking it at all. Again what was the point as it was the end of the meal and we wanted to leave. Ambiance was good. Food was ok. The inside was cozy and clean, our table was sticky when we sat down but free of debris at least. This is the first time having a bad experience at this restaurant chain. Shame. read more

We came here for brunch on a chilly Sunday morning. Our party of six was seated quickly. Our orders were taken and the drinks came out. Some in our party had Bloody Mary's. The issues started when another of our party tasted the Bloody Mary and decided that he wanted one as well. We ordered the additional one before the food came out. We did not receive it until we were almost done eating. BUT!!! The food was delicious! I had the Famous Hash and my husband had the three egg breakfast. I think everyone enjoyed their food. If it had ended here, I would have left four stars. However, one of our party called us the next day to ask how much our bill was. Their card had been charged our amount AND their amount. I double checked and there was no charge on our credit card. The waitress ran the cards at the table, in front of us, so I'm really not sure how this happened. As opposed to fighting with the credit card company or staying on hold for hours, I just venmo'd my aunt the money. So overall, a very mediocre experience. I'm LATE on this review but, I just visited Famous Toastery for the first time today. I enjoyed my meal + mimosas on an impromptu Sunday brunch after church. Food here is nothing fancy - just straight comfort breakfast items and the classics: Eggs, toast, breakfast potatoes, sausage, bacon, grits etc. No frills or fluff - it'll be hot breakfast items hot off the pan and pretty much everything I tasted was good. They have breakfast cocktails like mimosas and bloody Mary's - both of which were good. I had the breakfast bowl and it was hot and tasty. I believe all the locations usually have a hefty line on Sundays so plan accordingly. I will likely return! read more

We stayed at the University City Hilton during our stay in North Carolina. It was really great that you can exit the hotel and walk around the lake to Famous Toastery. The wait for two people on Sunday morning wasn't long at all. (15 mins.) They use Yelp's live waitlist, so you receive a text and check your place in line. We were seated in the sun room near a window. I really appreciated the intimate seating. Sometimes Host just get the vibe. We ordered hot tea to start. Famous Toastery offers Mighty Leaf tea brand. I love quality tea options. For breakfast my Fiancé ordered a "Build your own Omelette," with roasted veggies, mushrooms and Swiss cheese. For myself 3 egg whites, a cup of rolled oats and bacon. Our food was delicious, well seasoned and came out quickly. Our server gave us great service and made us feel well taken care of. If ever in University City again, I'd definitely return. read more

Her eggs came out over easy and she scraped them to the side and ate the rest (I love the movie Waiting, and I NEVER send food back). It seemed like someone that had never had authentic huevos rancheros just saw a picture of them and then made it up. The good news is when she asked for cilantro and more tortilla strips, there was no charge. I ordered the western omelet and as long as the eggs are cooked thoroughly, it is hard to mess that up. I also ordered the bacon and we got biscuits and gravy to share. Had a decent taste, but the gravy def tasted like it came out of a box or can and not grandma's recipe book. The manager did make several appearances, but it was more like a prison warden, watching over his inmate workers and there was zero interaction with the customers. He is probably the one that made the huevos rancheros. The overall experience was not great but it was not awful. About as average as you can get. Since I can't give them a 2.5, I would have rounded up, if it were not for the $4.00 cup of crappy coffee. Hostess was less than thrilled to have customers so early.
