I have never written a review before but I feel compelled to do so now because Lee's skills at Fancy Wave are exceptional. He magically transformed my brown hair into a seamless blonde balayage. You would think I was blonde for years. I was a walk-in customer. Their cut color and style for $100 was an awesome deal. I could have went to a cheaper place on main street but what swayed me was Lee's understanding of what I wanted to have done. Super picky and constantly dying my hair, I felt at ease when he echoed the particular aesthetic plan I was after. His communication skills are refreshing and his work is art. He thoroughly explained what he would attempt and I was extremely pleased. This dye job was done in November of 2012. No, it's not really "fancy." BUT it is cheap and they do more than a decent cut, in my opinion. If you're very picky about your hair or like an indulgent spa atmosphere, then just don't bother. If you're less picky and on a tight budget, this is the place for you. Keep in mind that this is an Asian establishment, so they are more familiar with "Asian- textured" hair and Asian-influenced styles. I've gotten my (curly, non-Asian-textured) hair cut here twice. Some might be worried about the language barrier, but it wasn't a problem in my experience. In fact, I enjoyed the lack of banal stylist chatter. I was a walk-in with a different stylist each time and I got more than my money's worth. I also recently brought my mom. Joe gave her a nice cut and was super sweet to her. Each of our cuts was $18 - including wash, dry, styling. If you're a curly gal and want to remain so, make sure to let your stylist know that you don't want any straightening done. Pretty much the one place I've been going for about a year or two. It was recommended by my friend, because of his friend who cuts hair there by the name of Eco. Eco is really good at what he does, hes young, stylish and can cut hair really well. The prices are very reasonable, at about $12 for a cut and wash. The wash part is great, because the nice asian lady massages your back and neck for about 10 minutes. Tops, I spend $20 on my cut & wash + tip. Lovin' it. Reason though why I gave it a 4? Because of the possibility that I could probably get an even better more stylish haircut. But I'm all about simplicity, and getting my haircut there is as simple as it gets. When I told them my hair color didn't change, they totally ignored me and one of the female stylists cursed at me under her breath in Chinese. Wow! Really? I tried the hairdresser Elaine a few weeks ago and she was good. I called today for an appointment. I was told by the owner that Elaine was available and to go in. I told her I would be there within 20mins. I walked in and was told that Elaine just got an appointment. I was forced to try another hairdresser. During my 30 mins there, Elaine was no where in sight. I know they don't do house calls! The hairdresser forced on me sucks. If you see any negative reviews below, it's complete nonsense. From my experience, I would go to them every other month if I could. They're practically my saviors now. First off, I don't post reviews often and I actually don't like going to salons. I managed to avoid getting my hair cut for about a year and a half now. But today, my friend recommended me to get my hair cut and thank god I did. I called around 3 and managed to get an opening at 4:30. When I arrived, a kind woman sat me down and washed my hair multiple times, each time telling me what she was doing. And usually I'm the quiet customer but today was an exception. She would check up on me and ask if the water was too hot or if she was rough. And when she was done, she gave a short massage (which I terribly needed). THEN CAME KEN :D! Ken is perhaps the most amiable man alive. He's super funny, genuine and really knows what he's doing. From me and my friend's experience with him, he suits your haircut directly to your face shape and even lifestyle, whether you are a student or a professional worker. At my time there, I wasn't too specific on what I wanted and therefore gave him more room to be creative, yet he knew exactly what to do. And again I have to repeat: I usually do not talk during haircuts but today was an exception! He would casually chat with me as if we were not strangers and that's a skill developed over the many years he has been working. You'll rarely find a talented barber in the Queens area who really understands their craft, but Derrick does. He actually knows his shit. Not only does he appreciate the quality of a good cut, but he will spend the time to ensure that you get what you want. He tells you exactly what he plans to do so you know what's gonna go down. If you're looking for a contemporary style cut (New York Style Trend that's popular in this current century) that'll match the same kind of cut that you would find in a Manhattan area, come to this salon instead and ask for Derrick. You'll get a way cheaper deal in your local area without having to travel all the way out to city. What's even more important, is that you're going to get a quality cut. Derrick is extremely detailed and refined in his work. I know a good fade when I see one and Derrick hits the nail on the head. The trim was clean and smooth like chocolate smoothing. If you want a great side line for your hair, ask for one and I swear you're going to feel like a dictator because that's how much power you're going to feel and acquire after you get your cut. If you're planning to write a mixtape, Derrick will make sure you're ready to spit bars while looking fresh af. Even Kanye West will start doubting himself. All jokes aside, Derrick's easy going and patient. I like people who are honest and authentic so trust me when I say this: Derrick doesn't give bullshit advice and doesn't cut around the corner. He says what he means and knows what he's talking about. He honestly cares a lot about the customers and puts a lot of effort into listening to feedback. Even better is his craftsmanship. He understands the aesthetics of hair cutting and you're honestly getting quality service for a cheap price. Overall, great guy and extremely comfortable to talk to. You don't find much people like that now adays. Side note, I actually decided to stop by this place on July 3rd after hearing all the great reviews about Derrick on Yelp. Thankfully for me, he was actually at the salon today even though he normally doesn't work on Sundays. The fact that he came the day before a holiday (out of his own accord) just to make sure customers could get their cut before the holiday closing, exemplifies the amount of consideration he places towards other customers. Today I visited Fancy Wave for the first time. Now I've passed by this store for like 2 decades. This family owned Salon is like a landmark located strategically near the corner of Main Street and Roosevelt Ave in Flushing on second floor top of Dunkin Donuts. For several years I've heard the hair stylist name Derrick is really good at his trade. I've always had my guys cutting my hair in Chinatown Manhattan based salon. Recently I moved back to Flushing so I needed a new Barber or stylist so I finally stopped by here. This is a Flushing based salon and an old name so don't expect fancy tech items found in the city and definitely not the city price. At $15 for men include hair wash, this is way cheaper than Manhattan but couple of dollar more than a few other local Flushing. The fee extra dollar difference paid off in Friendly service. The hair washing lady was friendly and after a thorough wash she massaged my shoulders. I gave a generous tip. Then I sat with Derrick to discuss what I want. I told him I want the hottest trendy cut and he said he has full confidence to give me what he has been giving to many clients. He really knows his hairs. Cutting hair is like slicing sushi or work with prime steak. You can't just cut it without studying how the hair is grown on each person. If you slice the fish or beef wrong the meat will be tough. Same with hair. He took his time and studied NY hair quality, how they are rooted, and shape of my head. We chit chat along the way. He's an ABC or American born Chinese so we conversed about everything in English. I'm very satisfied with my haircut. I'm also happy to find a new friendly nice and professional stylist who is close in distance to my new home. um...the best service i had from this salon was the lady that washed my hair. She was very nice and was really good at washing my hair - sounds funny, but it was at a point where i wanted to tip her more than my stylist. i also went to this salon because the review was great. and i specially requested JOJO to cut my hair because she was mentioned in these reviews...UM i just have to say im not going back there ever again. i mean - yeah it was cheap, well at least thats what i thought....jojo started cutting my hair and she started saying something to me. i am Asian but not chinese so i didnt understand her and she knew clearly i wasn't chinese at all... then she said something about how my hair needs treatment and that she'll sell me these treatment bottles for $10 dollars... i thought- hmm maybe i do need to take care of my hair so i said alright...plus she gave me no choice...she basically took out the bottle then sprayed maybe 4 times in my hair...then she started chopping off my hair unevenly...like she was just cutting anything tat she picked up on...then at the end she was supposed to charge me $20 but the bill came up to b $30... i told the lady i didn't want the bottle so take off the $10....then she claimed those sprays she did in my hair was the oil treatment..and that the bottle itself would be $45 dollars...i simply didn't want to argue and i was in a rush to b at another appointment... i was legit just going to tip the shampoo lady and not JOJO...but she stood there waiting to be tipped -____________________-....oh just so much more i can say about this salon...there's just isn't enough time and space in this box to write.. Been coming here since I was younger but haven't been here for a few years after I had a bad experience. I would usually go to Ken but that time I went to some lady who gave me layers but then ended up making my hair so thin. But I put that aside and came again because I knew that everyone here does a good job. Plus I was young and didn't open my mouth on how i wanted my hair. so I came last week and got my hair done by Tina. She was so sweet and yes this time I told her exactly how I wanted my hair, not too short and not thin. I tried cutting my own hair which was a huge fail but she fixed it and made it look so nice. My mother told me she looked so focused while cutting my hair and made sure everything was on point. When she finished she was like can I curl your hair? You look like you keep your hair straight all the time, which is true lol and she said that it would look beautiful and it did! I felt so luscious and kept flipping my hair. I grew up with my mom cutting my hair. Then, my mom got older and tired and I was forced to venture out into the dog eat dog world of finding a good stylist. I'm not very picky and don't need to keep up with all the latest trends. Just give me a low maintenance cut that I can wear going out and also to work. I found this AMAZING stylist who gave me a choppy, layered cut that didn't even need to be blow dried. All the strands just fell into place once my hair air dried. Then, she left the salon. Up and went, without a word or any kind of notice. Of course, I asked if she left any forwarding information, but I was out of luck. I tried out the owner of the salon and found that he should just step away from the chair and focus on managing the salon. He gave me a layered cut that made my voluminous hair even more poofy. So now I'm desperate and after hearing that Fancy Wave was cheap and that Eco was the go-to guy, I thought I would give them a try. I never got a cut from Eco since he also left the salon. The first time I went to Fancy Wave, a petite woman in her 40's cut my hair. I was pleased for what less than $30 including tip got me. Since I didn't get her name, the next time I went, I was paired up with a younger male stylist and that experience ended my days of going to a male stylist (no offense, but I've had 2 bad experiences already). On my 3rd trip, I made sure to seek out the petite woman in her 40's and made sure to get her name (Elaine). She flipped through my hair and agreed that my hair had TOO MANY LAYERS. She evened out my hair, leaving some layers and now I'm very pleased with how my hair is growing out. I've even gotten a few compliments on my shorter hair. Elaine's cut does require me to blow dry my hair since some strands like to flip out in weird directions, but for less than $30, I'm willing to accept some sacrifices. I went with my boyfriend to Flushing yesterday to get an affordable haircut and also to find a stylist who can make my thick head of hair dramatically thinner. I've had success mostly on vacation in Taiwan so I was thrilled to find a hair stylist like Jo Jo. After showing her a few pictures of my past haircuts she said she knew exactly what I wanted. She did an amazing job and was so fast doing it. My boyfriend went with me too and he said he thoroughly enjoyed the head massage when they were washing his hair. I've been going to this salon for six years (four to five times a year) and have been extremely satisfied. Finally a place that listens to me and knows how to handle my hair. The shampoo ladies are typically very good. I did notice that the newer shampoo ladies do not spend as much time massaging your scalp compared to a few years earlier. But, it's ok, they spend about 10 minutes on your hair. (I usually tip them $2) Sometimes there is a wait especially around the holidays and definitely before Chinese New Year (it's a tradition for asians to get a haircut in preparation for the new year). I would highly recommend my stylist, JOJO. If you have a style in mind, she will do it for you very well with good precision. After going to her for some time, she said one day that she highly recommended a different type of haircut that would suit my lifestyle and face shape. I trusted her opinion and I've been going back for the last two years to get the same haircut! Since I have a round shaped face, she did advise against not getting my hair too short (she'll put it to you politely and professionally and let you know what works best). Jojo does not push hair coloring or products on you either. She is very good at recognizing her clients also. She always remembers me when I go. Since my hair is medium length, I am usually charged between $14 to $16. I usually tip Jojo generously since she does such a great job. They offer coloring and highlighting too, but I never tried it. Coloring is about $45 and Highlighting is about $85. read more

LOVE this place! I used to get my hair cut at a salon on Union Tpke that recently closed down. Cuts were around $30-35 a pop, and they weren't the best either. Around sometime in January, I decided to give this place a try because my mom recommended it to me - and her hair was looking more and more amazing with each cut. My mom always gets her hair cut by Joe, so I immediately asked for him when scheduling my appointment. My first time here, I came with no expectations whatsoever. I just wanted my hair cut and my mane tamed. The place looks very much like a regular Flushing hair salon, if not better. There was no wait, and the place was decently filled. Joe not only listens to you but will add his opinion of what will/will not look good on you. I had my hair washed, cut, blowdried, and styled to my liking -- ALL less than $20 together! This is the only place I ever go to get my hair cut anymore. It's inexpensive and the environment is super-friendly, even if you can only speak English and don't understand anything in Chinese (like me).
