I recently got Japanese straightening done at their salon but first I wanna state one thing : they were very careless. They kept going back and forth, two stylists kept switching turns while doing my hair so idk if the timing was off or what but my hair is brittle now. And so I contacted them on Instagram they told me to come back and that they'll be able to "fix it", I did, and they just straightened it with some solution which still got washed off revealing original texture afterwards. And when I complained now this is what they said "Hi dear, based on your hair's condition and texture before the service, this is the best result we could safely achieve while still maintaining the health of your hair. The straightening helped reduce frizz and smooth the hair a lot, but very resistant or previously treated hair may still have some natural movement after washing and won't stay completely pin straight." Now they're blaming my hair for being weak. So I said Japanese straightening is supposed to fix that no? And they should've just told me if hair couldn't handle it. I want to start by recognizing the stylists who worked with me. The young man Johan (or John - I may have his name wrong) was incredibly fast and did my root touch-up with great attention to detail. Zoe was a pleasure to work with -- courteous, professional, and ultimately the reason my hair turned out even in the end. My stars really go to both of them for their effort and care. I do, however, want to share my overall experience. When I was first seated, there was a plate of snacks at my station that had already been eaten from and was never cleared away during my service. I'm not sure what the standard practice is, but it didn't feel fresh or welcoming. The wash station was also very uncomfortable. Because the chair is flat, it put a lot of strain on my lower back and neck. My hair needed to be washed about 4-5 times, and during those washes I often had to support the weight of my own head due to the lack of neck support. I could never really relax. I actually left with what feels like a neck sprain from the repeated movement. During processing, I received a root touch-up and overall color (for reference, my hair is a short bob above the shoulders). By the third round, my scalp felt like it was burning. Zoe kindly checked on me earlier in the service, but the last process became very uncomfortable and I went home with irritation on my scalp and around my hairline. I've colored my hair many times before and the number of times of processing felt unusual. Zoe recommended adding a treatment for an additional fee, which I agreed to. I will say the treatment helped soothe my scalp, and I appreciated that. At the same time, I wish it hadn't felt necessary in the first place. Toward the end of my appointment, I noticed my roots and the rest of my hair were different shades. I was nervous to speak up, but Zoe stepped in on her own and corrected the color so everything matched. I'm very grateful for her professionalism there -- she made sure I didn't leave unhappy. My biggest shock came at checkout. I was quoted $470, and this was the first time I heard the total cost of the service. The only price ever discussed beforehand was the $50 treatment when I asked about it. So from my understanding, the hair services themselves were $420, plus the $50 treatment/red light therapy, bringing my card total to around $500 before tip. With tip, I spent about $600. For hair that is above shoulder length, that felt extremely high -- especially considering the reprocessing required to fix the color, the scalp discomfort, and the neck strain. I completely respect that this is an artistic salon, but the lack of upfront pricing transparency is what upset me most. I am satisfied with how my hair ultimately turned out, and again I truly appreciate the work from Johan/John and Zoe. But the physical discomfort and the surprise cost make it hard for me to feel good about the experience overall. read more

I had to point it out for them to even it out. ON TOP of that, we noticed the sideburns aren't even SYMMETRICAL. SAVE YOUR MONEY and go to Manhattan for better quality. My boyfriend told me that when the stylist showed him the back of his head, he pointed the mirror on the back right of his head then when he moved to the left, raised up the mirror so my boyfriend could not see his bald spot. Got a haircut in July and was given a random male hairstylist. Only requested him cut my hair short. He ended up adding layers and thinning my hair WITHOUT MY CONSENT. He thinned the lower end of my hair so much that my head ended up looking like a mushroom. Also because of the 'layers' he added, random parts of my hair is shorter and some longer. My hair is literally a mess because of him. The mess was so much more obvious after I went home and washed my hair so I went back the other day to get it fixed but then my hair was too short to be fixed. So the only solution they offered was to wait for 2-3 months for my hair to grow and then I can come back and get it fixed, BUT it has to be done by the SAME hairstylist. I waited for months for my hair to grow but it's still a mess and I simply cannot risk getting it ruined by the same hairstylist again. I used to love this place but this time it was just horrible. I'm not going to lie, I read plenty of this salon's reviews before making a decision since I've had my hair screwed twice from two different stylists at two different salons, so I'm going to be as real as possible. I'm Chinese with long, all around dry, 2B hair. Atmosphere/Location (9/10): large and aesthetic but bit hard to find. They take your jacket and bag from you and there's rows upon rows of chairs. They put you in a silk robe and offer you snacks and drinks for wait time. There were multiple english interpreters accompanying me, but they did mainly speak chinese, very much like conversations between coworkers at a nail salon. Consultation (10/10): I was a bit skeptical when they said they could do it on the same day as my appointment, but it was very thorough. I like that I didn't have to know exactly what I wanted and that the stylists were able to use their expertise to make the best decision for my complexion. Perhaps it's commonplace among salons in manhattan and stuff like that, but the other two I went to completely butchered my look. Front Desk (9/10): she didn't confirm my appointment and had one hell of a rbf. She wasn't mean though; just doing her job. She charged me 323 after I told her that my deposit with Tina was 57, and even tho I told her to keep the change she refused it. No funny looks for paying in cash or anything like that. Assistant Apple (9/10): washed my hair before bleaching and applied bleach like it was shampoo which had me worried for a second since my hair and scalp are pretty dry to begin with, but she did respond immediately when I told her my scalp was burning too much. I had my roots bleached in multiple sessions (same day) with a new oil layer applied and I think my scalp survived. She also prepared a whole table full of snacks to munch on and even gave me some of what I believed to be her own personal snack. We had some conversations too but I was the initiator always. After telling her about my dry scalp, she did keep checking up on me to make sure the oil spray was doing it's job. She also completed bleach/dye application, and hair washing by herself mostly. Stylist Ben (10/10): I originally came in with the idea of a copper/blonde ombre and teetering between regular bangs and curtain bangs. Ben said using a redder toned color for the ends instead of blonde would look better (I assumed strawberry blonde) but instead ended up with a beautiful salmon pink that makes the copper pop. He also chose curtain bangs for me. While I was getting bleached and dyed he was mainly cutting other people's hair. He did come to check on bleach/dye progress occasionally if Apple was busy. I think both of them managed their time well. He stepped in completely to brow dry, cut, and curl my hair and I LOVE that he didn't cut off 4 inches when I said to cut off 1. Results (9/10): even though my hair reaches basically the bottom of my ribcage, I was still only charged the standard 380. The bottom of my hair is a little drier than before and I already have split ends even though it was just cut, but nothing too crazy. I believe my scalp is fine and my hair is light and soft and the color is beautiful. I'll probably keep coming back since I'm scared to try new salons and this one worked for me. read more

I asked Tina for a estimate, and she quoted $380-$450, for bleach color, olaplex, cut and style. My total came out to actually being $380! Which I think is a great price for all that~ My stylist is Pen (Pan), and he's great. I show him the photo of what I want, and he got me there. After the dye, wash and everything, i was not very happy how some of my roots looks like it didnt get enough dye. I actually jumped at one point because it felt like my hair was being ripped out of the root in the front. I told him to please stop being aggressive and couldn't wait to get away. My hair colorist is Johnny and Lucas Communication: I contacted Tina via IG to schedule appointment and the process was simple. Her aftercare instructions were deeply appreciated. They were upfront with cost. Tina is so friendly, prompt and patient, I felt like I could trust MG. Although staff mainly spoke mandarin, they tried their best to explain the process. As expected, it took about 6-7 hours, make sure to bring a protein bar or snack. I wanted mushroom brown balayage but Johnny explained that this ash grey ombré balayage with baby highlights on top would be better because it would fade overtime to brown and be easier to change hair color if I wanted in the future. I'm no color expert or hair enthusiast, so I just decided to trust the man... I guess in due time I'll find out?! To me, it seems like the salon specializes more in ombré than balayage... One thing that did bother me was the bleach, it burned my scalp like a hot tamale. I asked Lucas if this was normal, he said sure ‍ maybe I've gotten older and my scalp is sensitive?! Stay away at all costs. Horrible experience. There are multiple suspicious five star reviews with new profiles if you read them. I normally do not write 1 star reviews but this one needs to be said. 1. Lack of Customer Service- They do not take reservations for cuts and when I arrived I was not greeted. Wait time was said to be one hour, so I waited- but there's more. 2. Poor Communication- The entire time they did not communicate where I should be sitting or who I would be seeing to wash or cut my hair. They simply said sit down and wait. 3. Lack of Respect for Customers- There were four other customers sitting waiting in chairs with their hair wet for over half an hour! One had to get up to ask what was going on. That's on top of one hour of waiting. The original wait time was a lie. Why chase money when they could've simply said there is no availability? 4. I literally had to dry my own hair because I was not going to wait any longer. No one came to update us in the waiting area when we would be seen. Ridiculous. 5. Hair Color Fail- After speaking with one of my friends about this experience, she told me they completely changed the hair color different from the one that she showed them in a picture. The hair stylist told her this color looks better on her when it was not what she wanted. She will never return either. 6. Lack of Space for Customers and Employees- At one point there were 10 people sitting in the waiting area next to the coat rack and the employees ate their lunch in the same area with packages on the floor and hair on the ground. I"m normally not someone who leaves reviews but honestly, I have to bc of how much I hate my haircut. Firstly, I just want to say that part of the staff especially the front desk are extremely kind people who cared for me bc I had such a bad experience, I ended up crying, & they genuinely cared about how I felt (hence the two stars). I had a terrible haircut experience with one of the hairstylists: Leo. The moment I sat with Leo, he did not even greet me & had an annoyed look on his face. Off the bat, he did not even talk to me. I even tried to make small talk with him, but seems like he wasn't interested. He just started working on my hair & that's when I showed him a few inspo photos of what I wanted. I had grown out my hair for the past few years, so my hair was very long & special to me. I DID NOT want to cut my hair short; I told him to keep the length but just trim a bit off (I even showed him), but he kept cutting it shorter & shorter every time. I reminded him numerous times during the haircut of what I wanted & he just looked angry. I ended up getting something completely different than what I asked for. I wanted a blowout as well, but he did my hair completely flat; my front pieces did not "swoop" the way I asked him to do & my hair was so frizzy. Worst part is that he cut my hair SO choppy. Of course, after 8 full months later my hair color grew out and it was time for a new makeover. I went last Saturday at 10:30am. I made an appointment with Frankie in advance. As soon as I got there they seated me in a chair and asked me what I came in for. I showed the hair expert the colors I wanted. At first he didn't seem fond of the colors I've chosen a lavender and rose pink because he informed me those colors fade after few washes. So he proceeded to show me ash colors that I did not like. So he said I can think about it while they bleached my hair, so I agreed. They bleached my hair about 3 times within 3 hrs. During this time Frankie (interpreter) arrived and explained to the color expert that I want a bright light color and advised me to do what I want. I was glad he supported my wish. Shortly after the color expert manager arrived and sge noticed my blonde hair. She immediately asked the color expert what I was getting done in Chinese. It sounded like she wanted to give me what I wanted. She took over the coloring portion. :) I love this lady! She has a short light grey color and pretty. She mixed the colors and gave me a purple & pink ombre. I love it!!! I think she gave me a hair treatment too because my hair was super slick and straight. Afterwards I got a trim from the color expert. Then they gave me a pink color bottle so that I can maintain it. I was really happy at the end. It cost me $350, but it was so worth it. Of course I brought extra cash for tip. Tipped every person that worked on my hair. I want to give a big shout to Frankie (best interpreter) and the color expert manager, and the lady who bleached my hair 3 times. I love this color more than the grey I got last year. I will say that while I do believe this salon is overpriced, they take good consideration of your hair condition and do their best to protect it while getting as close to the results that you want. I am obsessed! I came here to get my hair done by Allen and I am so impressed by the level of service at MG hair! First off, the salon is beautiful. The overall aesthetic is super modern and chic. There are 3 different rooms and they are filled with gorgeous chairs and ring lights. What I noticed is that every Stylist have helpers and assistants. Allen was my primary stylist, but two other assistants helped apply the highlights and bleach on my hair. One did the initial foiling and then another did the touching up and washing. I got balayage highlights and also tried their purple ash shampoo toner. Allen finished it all up with a beautiful haircut cause, my oh my were my ends in need of a cut! Follow or watch my tik tok on it at https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJK8sk6M/ I started with super over grown roots, medium hair, with leftover burnt orange ends, uneven layers, and black boxed dye (a huge no no!) but walked out with soft, thick, voluminous, amazing, ombré ash brown hair, perfectly toned and blended!! From start to finish Tina was there in the most warm way. After setting up the perfect appointment time and location and sending pics of my hair, she gave me the run down of everything I needed to know. The second I came into the salon I was greeted with warmth and immediately given a comfy seat up front. The staff is so attentive because as soon as I sat down, I was helped with two hair specialist, one being Alex who was going to be doing my hair that day! He evaluated my hair and we had great conversation about the color I was going for. I used multiple pictures to make sure we both were on the same page. Next off was a rinse, bleach session, wash, and another bleach session. Normally my hair and head can be super sensitive but my scalp felt comfortable. They were so gentle and efficient. His assistant Leo and others came to blend my hair which made the process go faster. I could tell my hair was being taken care of. Even if a droplet of water splashed on my face from the washing, someone would immediately be there with a new towel to wipe it up. The attention to detail! When I Uber Eats my food, the carrier accidentally went to the wrong spot. So then Alex went above and beyond and actually went outside to pick it up for me! He did not have to do that! We ending up drinking boba together all of us and quickly became friends chatting about life. But any time I got sleepy and wanted to nap while the color was added to my hair, the nice music and ambiance made it easy to do that as well! The hair washing is honestly my favorite too because it's so soothing, it's like a head massage! Last was blow drying, curling, and Alex even added amazing hair essential oils and sprays that smelled so good and refreshing! He even gifted me with a bottle to bring home once I complimented the smell! So so kind!! And I even got a detangling travel brush since I'm always on the go and he made a mental note of that! Then came the photoshoot and Tina explained how to maintain my hair color and quality best even with super affordable products I could get on my own on Amazon! That's amazing right there. Where everyone feels like family, makes you comfortable, suits your needs and wants, and also gives you space to relax and get pampered. I 10/10 recommend MG Hair Artistic, Alex, Tina, and booking through their Instagram and checking out their promos they have! They're quality is wonderful and the colors they can do are so versatile and diverse!! Alex also has 10 + years of hair experience and it definitely shows!! Even though he looks great for his age! SO SO HAPPY!!!!! I have been following MG Hair Artistic Salon on instagram for over a year now, and I am so happy I made the switch!! I came in with previously bleached/damaged/splotchy from Overtone/in need for attention hair & left so thrilled with the results. Long & detailed review, as I left SO SO HAPPY!! Pen was my colorist/stylist & unfortunately, I did not the assistant's name who he was working with - but she was just as awesome :) I was very impressed with the salon from start to finish. My stylists did not just throw bleach all over my hair, but took the time to bleach out specific areas of my hair needing more attention. For example, I had splotchy blue/green areas from playing with Overtone during the lonely quarantine - and I noticed those areas are where bleach was attended to most of the time. Pen & his assistant were very honest on what color my hair would get to (due to green/blue), which I appreciated as well. Most of the time you show your hair dresser a picture and they just say OK! Which leads to unmatched expectations & sad results for the client. The salon did its best to match my wants, while paying attention to what my hair could handle. Many times throughout the bleaching process the assistant would do gentle pulls on a strand of hair to be sure it was still strong & withstanding the bleach treatment. Since the NYC area is full of salons - I took in the environment to see what was specifically different about MG compared to other salons I've gone to since living in the area. I noticed high attention to detail in hair cuts around me, asking of opinions to their colleagues to get additional advice, and generally just taking their time to get the best result. OK! I am done. I'm so in love with the outcome. I walked out of that salon feeling more beautiful and confident. My friend recommend the salon to me through instagram and I made my appointment with Tina through dm. She is so sweet and easy to talk to!! She checked up on me during the appointment and then gave me details on aftercare when I was finished. Benson was my stylist and I wish I got the name of his assistant, but she was very thorough in getting the bleach and dye throughout every aspect of my scalp and hair. The color is exactly what I wanted from the photo I showed them and they suggestions to make the style fit me better personally, such as blending a darker color of red into my roots, instead of the same red throughout. read more

Ruined my hair. The hairdresser didn't even follow a single word that I said. And it further made me become anxious. I RECOMMEND EVERYONE DONT GO HERE TO GET A HAIRCUT! read more
