This is a beautiful restaurant in downtown Monterey. We had reservations, which I would recommend since it was a full house. The service was great and the food was amazing. My husband had the paella, which he wasn't a huge fan of but he had tried this dish in Spain and didn't like it there either so it might just be his personal preference. I had the calamari steak, which was delicious. We also had the soufflé and profiteroles. It was a very nice dinner. read more

Great service but the food was pretty bad... Calamari was very rubbery (over cooked I presume), mashed potatoes had a hard layer on top as if it might've been sitting in the window for a while waiting to be served, the carrot was very hard. We got dessert and the pastry tasted as if it was freezer burned. Cocktails were strong but very old school, they do not use fresh citrus. read more

All I can say is if you're ever in Pacific Grove California, stop and have dinner at Fandango's. Chef Jacques and the staff will not disappoint. It was obvious to us they work as a team and the outcome is delicious, relaxing and fun. My husband had the lamb in huckleberry sauce and commented it was the best lamb he's ever had. My filet mignon was super tender and the wine sauce was superb. We had the chef's warm apple tart with salted caramel ice cream. Finally an apple tart with the apples cooked to perfection; not too crunchy but not over cooked. Then when we didn't think we could eat another bite, the chef sent out a French pastry, filled with ice cream and chocolate sauce and topped with whipped cream. Fandango is the Applebees of adult restaurants. And I mean this in the best way possible. Applebees has a menu that reads a mile long which means that anyone will find something there they would eat. Now the difference between Applebees and Fandango is that the food at Fandango is actually really good and the service kicks ass. Like the menu, the restaurant is huge! When we checked in for our 9:00 reservation we were showed a few of our seating options. It was late and we were hungry and decided to let our hostess decide for us. She found us a nice quiet table near the front entry. Our server immediately came over and introduced himself. Within minutes I had a cocktail in hand and now the task of trying to figure out what to order loomed over us. It was cool damp night which made for a perfect soup night. My wife and I decided to share a bowl of onion soup and we were glad we did. The soup was amazing! It was hearty, full of flavor and not too salty (which is the biggest downfall to onion soup). Each bite included large chunks of sweet onion and cheesy goodness. The giant crouton somehow magically stayed crunchy which added to our enjoyment. Now what to order for dinner? Short ribs? steak frites? Even the spaghetti sounded good. I finally went with the short ribs while crossing my fingers that my wife would share some of her steak frites (which she did). Yummy baby! The short ribs were tender, flavorful and again like the restaurant HUGE! So plenty to share! My wife's steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare and the fries were about as good as you will find anywhere. And our super cool waiter even included a side of green beans which again were super tasty! Overall our experience was very solid. The atmosphere is warm and vibrant. Think old school, but not stuffy. And again as I mentioned the menu has EVERYTHING from spaghetti to chicken and even seafood. And there are plenty of vegetarian options. read more

This is one of the hyped up restaurants in Carmel, but it didn't live up to the hype for us. Food was good, but not great. We had the caprese salad, sanddabs for appetizers and I had the surf and turf for the entree. We concluded with the profiteroles for dessert. The only dish that 'wowed' me was the profiteroles. The rest was candidly pretty standard for the prices, maybe slightly below. Service was friendly but slow. Restaurant environment was eclectic but homey. I enjoyed the atmosphere. We sat in the front my by the windows and a fireplace. It has a warm and cozy feel which was perfect for the cold evening we were there. Tip for the day: The calamari steak appetizer will change your life, and will ruin you for calamari anywhere else. It's that tasty. And, really, you could probably leave your teeth at home, 'cause it's that tender! So, now that I've been there twice in the past week, I can vouch for the osso buco and the salmon salad...brilliant. Did I mention the calamari?? (no surprise) I think this is probably about the 4th return visit since my initial review, and it has since become my Dad's favorite place... Two peeps in my party ordered the filet, and my Dad (who just turned 96) said it was the most tender steak he'd ever had. My sister (first timer at Fandango) also commented on the steak being the best she'd ever had. Operative words being *ever*, in both cases! My other sis had the sand dabs which she enjoyed very much, and I went for the Diver Scallops over pasta, which defies adequate adjectives to describe its yumminess. Ginormous scallops! One word: OVER rated! 2 of us walked in w/o reservations, but the place was empty anyway. We were greeted, kinda, but with lackluster attitude from owner. We felt slighted but tried to overlook what was possibly a bad night for owner... this was our MISTAKE #1. Our waiter pointed us to a table instead of him walking us to it. There was loud nearby kitchen discussion by waiters and foul language to boot. Not good for customers seeking civil dinner. My water glass smelled like cigarette smoke, then I noticed a waiter come in from smoking, practically exhaled INSIDE the restaurant door, but the half closed door did little to keep the smoke outside. I bet he didn't wash his hands therefore the cigarette smell in my water glass. I drank a glass of red wine and tried to ignore it, but finally had to involve the owner. He was so NOT caring about this serious lapse in customer service. He didn't make a move to replace it. I was disgusted by this, but stayed because I had heard the food was outstanding. This was our MISTAKE #2! The tapas were a mess, like a conglomerate of leftovers, haphazardly assembled on a plate... having had tapas I appreciate these delightful (usually) "little bites"... but these were droll, boring to look at and to taste, lackluster in appearance and intention it seemed, disappointing all around. We decided to cut our losses and go elsewhere for what we were seeking, quiet sumptuous dinner, relaxing atmosphere, AND GOOD FOOD of course, which we did not find at Fandango. And the attitudes clearly stated "I don't care about your dining experience, it's just a job" As a few diners drifted in, we observed what seemed to be the Fandango creed, sit "em down, bring "em food, ignore "em thereafter." One lady sent her food back, complaining that it was cold, and tasted microwaved, not fresh anyway. But with argument from their waiter, she kept it and tried another bite. It looked like she, like us, was having a difficult time enjoying her dinner. Should it be this way people? And now, having heard similar comments about Fandango, having asked about others' experiences there, I know I won't be back, there was nothing to bring me back there. I can forgive a bad night, but I had to pay way too much for their lousy night! Do yourself a favor, skip Fandango... go to Max's Grill on Forest and see what a proper dining experience can be, completely life-changing goodness! read more

1 of the better meals i had in the pacific grove area was over here. The staff were on top of drinks and made excellent recommendations. The sand dabs were awesome, i never even heard of the fish before but the waiter gave me a nice little run down about them...so cool points there. Here's the main reason why our waiter earned an extra 8% on top of the tip. We came in right around 5pm or so... there was a group of folk being freaking out over a fly...like grabbing menus and slamming it against the walls... it was sort of comical but on the same note i didn't want to sit next to some crazy stuck up weirdo's who were decked out in their carmel styled nuevocoastal wear. The waiter noticed the horror in my eyes and took us to another room and sat me and the wifey next to the fireplace. Stopped by Fandango with some friends to enjoy a drink by their fireplace. They have a full bar, although it's more comfortable to sit at a table than at the bar. It's an inviting place with a colorful decor, big windows and a glass ceiling. Next time I'll have to come back for brunch or dinner and try their food. We had a very disappointing meal at Fandango. Made a reservation with Open Table after reading the good reviews both on Yelp and OT. We ordered the french onion soup, scallops with pappardelle and rack of lamb(from dinner menu). The only thing decent is the soup! We asked medium for the lamb and it tasted burnt. The fries is bland. The scallops were good but the pappardelle is bland. Service is very slow and the waiter is not friendly at all. The surprise was when the check came. Total for all 3 items are $102! I normally would't complain about price if the foods are good, but this really is the worst experience and foods we've ever gotten. read more

I attended a private event on Saturday July 1st. The room was pleasant and nicely appointed. We were a party of fifteen and the room was spacious enough for comfortable seating. However the server was rude and seemed annoyed at questions that individuals had about the menu items. He rushed through taking orders and was not as attentive as I feel he should have been given the reputation that this restaurant has. While my salmon was prepared adequately it needed more of the butter sauce as parts were very dry. The potatoes that accompanied it were not cooked thoroughly and were quite crunchy. I noticed several of the guests had to send their meals back as they were cold. For a restaurant of such long standing in Pacific Grove and for the price I expected better overall. I am so upset with myself that I dined here. We ordered the filet mignon, scampi and sand dabs. The waiter up sold me on a French onion soup that he made sound like came with the order. When I realized it didn't and asked to cancel it, less than 2 minutes later, the waiter told me it was already being cooked. So I was stuck with it. None of the food items tasted good, all over cooked and lacking flavor. Shrimp is not meant to be hard and gummy. I wanted escargot while on my 2 week return trip to Monterey. This place is Zagat rated and had great reviews. The place is beautiful. The staff is professional and very friendly. They started me off with complimentary crusty French bread, butter, and kalamata olives. Yum. I got I glass of Los Robles Cab Sauv. Everyrhing was superb. The escargot came in the perfect amount of time and was delicious. Then the steak and frites. I asked for rare. I got raw. And it wasnt seasoned except for an herb butter that was good but steak really needs to be seasoned before grilling, doesnt it? If it was, it wasnt enough. It was bland and raw and disappointing. I wish the friendliness of the staff alone would tell the greatest of a restaurant, but sight it's a restaurant and the food matters. The food is equal to a frozen TV dinner. I was disappointed, dissatisfied and disenchanted. I ordered the veal and it was so blanketed with cheese, it was more similar to a Shepherds pie than anything else. I was disgusted! This place is great. My family went here for a lunch and the place did not disappoint. It exceeded our expectation. My son loves the baguette and enjoyed his 1/2 pound cheese burger and fries. I had the best Croque-monsieur , it is warm, cheesy and fluffy. They had made the top Soufflé style. My wife had their "today's special" the french classic- Coq au vin- braised chicken and it was so tender and so delectable . It came is a light salad and the vegetables are so fresh. Her meal ended with dessert- Profiteroles, which is totally unexpected. The Profiteroles filled with ice caramel ice cream and, top with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup top. It was divine. My son had the chocolate mousse and he enjoyed it by himself. The service is stellar and thanks to our server who was very attentive. One of the best french meal we had. Absolutely amazing, one of the best eating experience 's of my life! Came with my family to Monterey on vacation and my folks recommend we go here for dinner as they have been coming here for some time. Small, intimate, cozy ambiance with romantic french music in the background and fireplace. We were seated immediately and waited on by Valentine who was proficient and on top of things from start to finish. He accommodated all of our questions and requests with ease and patience. We started with a bottle of Duckhorn Merlot and appetizers. The giant calamari ( as other reviews have stated ) is to die for. One of the best I've ever had, succulent and cooked just right. The caprese salad was tasty and spot on. The house cured salmon was fresh and bright, capers and red onions- delicious. The faux gras was amazing, especially the fig/nut slice pairing and the rest of the additions. Also they made sure to suggest having a small glass of Chateau Lamothe to pair which took it to another level. The entrées were all done to perfection. The duckling a'la orange was cooked perfectly and the orange pairing was a new welcome addition for my taste buds. The filet of Sanddabs had perfect - light breading, and the right lemon finish. The asparagus and potatoes au gratin rounded it out. The surf and turf was spot on, filet and tails cooked correctly and lived up to all expectations, the portion was more than expected which is not usually the case in most restaurants. The Couscous lamb shank was spiced with what I would compare to a Mediterranean feel and so tender it was falling apart. They serve this with a tube of chili paste that really packs some heat. All of these were hands down knockouts! For dessert - The crème brulé was perfect, one of the best I've had. Creamy with light crust so it doesn't stick to your teeth. The Caramel topped flan was refreshing and light. The Farandole sundae was delectable and mouth watering Chocolate goodness. Add a fresh cup of coffee with this and you're in heaven. A little XO cognac never hurts either. In conclusion, first class experience all around. Ambiance, service, and food were above and beyond. We were visiting the folks again and MIL was looking forward to having dinner at Fandango. We walked through the entire restaurant and were seated near the fireplace. We ordered the tapas plate to share.An assortment of a celery root salad, pate maison on toast points, piquillo pepper filled with ricotta cheese, marinated shitaki mushrooms and speck (a type of prosciutto) were delicious. My MIL recently dined with a group of her friends and enjoyed the pate maison so much that she coaxed our server for an order (usually reserved for lunch). Together with a basket of warm bread, olives, and vodka martinis we nibbled, sipped, and nodded with satisfaction. Our mains were a little mixed. My husband's Osso Buco with saffron rice was okay. The meat was tender but he thought the gremolata was a little flat. I had a small taste of the rice and sauce and it was a bit bland. He didn't eat his marrow, so I did; it was on the dry side. My FIL's Lamb Shank was quite the presentation. The couscous was served in a large bowl; the lamb and vegetable stew served in a separate bowl. There was also sliced, toasted almonds, plumped raisins and a tube of harrisa to season the stew. I thought I spied a merguez sausage and he confirmed it was lamb sausage. He said the food was fine and was content with his order, but there was enough to feed three people! My poor MIL did not enjoy her Canneloni Nicoise (filled with spinach, veal, ham, cheese and tomato). She said that for her, it simply had no flavor. Her order looked like two mounds of melted cheese in a red sauce. My Sweetbread Piccata was a bit uneven. Three or four pieces were cooked a nice golden brown. The thinner slices were somewhat dry, crumbly, and chewy. A thicker piece was a little more smooth and creamy in texture, but the sauce was spot on. If it weren't for the sauce, I would not have eaten it all. It came with a side of sauteed italian squash and a potato cube that was topped with cheese and browned. I think their food will appeal more to a base of of people whose palate leans toward less assertive flavors. Personally, I would not eat here again, but I have some friends who would love this place and would recommend Fandango to them. read more

My family has Christmas dinner here every year. This is always the crown of our feasting during the holiday season. The whole family is invited, sometimes over 30 of us are there at once! Cocktails first, then we pick our wine for the dinner. There is a large wine selection with plenty of perfect pairing options. This is followed by our favorite appetizers. We always order Sanddabs, Scallops and Calamari to start, all three are lightly covered in butter and garlic. The dinner menu has lots of variety but is not complicated featuring French and mediterranean takes on steaks, fish, and pastas. The last few dinners I have had the Spanish Paella. The saffron is spicy and delicious, and the amount of shellfish is plentiful. Family favorites are the rack of lamb, the filet minion, chilean sea bass and the new york strip. Dessert is so amazing. Our family favorites are, the profiteroles (cream puffs) with cappuccino ice cream, the chocolate mousse, and the Valcheran ( a meringue tower filled with vanilla ice cream and covered in almonds, whipped cream and chocolate syrup). I like to have a double espresso or cappuccino to top it all off. We always have the front room reserved for our entire family, the restaurant does a fantastic job of serving our entire family completely the entire dinner. The upstairs back room is very private or try the wine cellar room to provide the perfect romantic setting. I can hardly imagine spending a Christmas dinner anywhere else but here. My boyfriend and I had a romantic dinner here in celebration of my birthday. We made reservations, but it was a Wednesday night, and there wasn't a need to. The atmosphere is really nice inside. It was a little warm though. We had walked to dinner from our hotel, so I thought maybe it was just me, but my boyfriend confirmed it was warm. But, after a while we got used to it and it wasn't so bad. The food was amazing! We shared the Sanddab appetizer which I've never had before, and it was delicious! It had a great flavor and was almost a melt in your mouth texture. Really good. I ordered the Pallea Fandango, as I have never had anything like it, and wanted to try something new. I also saw pictures from previous yelp reviews and that sealed my decision. I was very pleased with this choice, the presentation was awesome, they serve it in the skillet, and there is so much of it! I had to take the rest home. My boyfriend got the scallops, which I snagged a bite of, oh man.....yum! He loved it! Then we shared the chocolate moose, which was very light, but oh so good. Our waiter was very attentive, as was the bus boy, who made sure we always had bread and our glasses were full. This place is one of the cutest restaurants in all the land. The details in this restaurant are well thought out and there are different rooms throughout the restaurant to give it a small French bistro feel. It's a great place to go when catching up with a friend. I split the sand dabs with a friend because I thought the portions were going to be huge and we had dinner plans. They were, and another friend had to take her dish to go. The dish had to smallest of details - the potatoes on the dish were cooked with multiple herbs including lavender. Yum!!! My wife and I went here for lunch and were very under impressed. My wife's $15 Caesar salad had wilted lettuce in it, and minimal dressing. I had the calamari steak. It was good in texture and presentation, mediocre in taste. Nobody at our table seemed to have their socks knocked off with the quality of food, which I would give this place 4 stars if it was affordable, but for the prices charged, there are plenty of other restaurants that will deliver better quality for that price. The service was mediocre too. Nothing outright bad, but hardly the service one expects for the bill charged. Either prepare the food with love and passion or lower your prices. Our friend who treated us to this meal got a Nicoise salad with tuna that looked beautiful, but sadly didn't hit the mark in the taste department either. My wife Cathy and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary last night at Fandango. Our two sons and their girlfriends joined us for one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we've ever had. We were able to reserve the nook, a nicely decorated small room that comfortably sat our group of 6 with room to spare for 2-3 more. From 7 until about 10, we were very well taken care of by our waiter Valentine (sp?). He was very but not overly attentive. We brought some special wines of our own, so we didn't try the wine list (this time). The corkage fee was $21 per bottle, something to be considered when deciding to bring or buy wine. For appetizers we shared tapas, melon prosciutto, and their famous sand-dabs. They were all very good, but the sand-dabs were the favorite followed by the beautiful plate of tapas. Three of us had the Caprese salad and it was excellent. Really though, one portion could have served two people (shared). The Caesar salad was also very good. I had the Fandango soup bowl, a Greek chicken soup w. rice and a touch of lemon (I think); this was the only part of the meal I found disappointing; it was a bit bland and watery. For entrees, we had six different dishes. They were all very good and the plating was impressive too. Most of us felt the rack of lamb was the most memorable, and it was followed by the scallops (w. delicious pasta), paella/osso buco (tie), duo of filet mignon, and grilled salmon (Monterey wild chinook served with cafe de Paris butter - my choice; it was a little (!) over-grilled for my taste but it was still very good). For dessert, we shared Profiteroles filled w. ice-cream and topped with cream and chocolate sauce. It was very good but next time we want to try some of the other great looking desserts (e.g., Baba Au Rum; Souffle Glacé Grand Marnier). To finish the night off, a few of us had cappuccinos and yours truly had a special treat, 18-yr-old Glenfiddich. Agree with many others -- food was excellent but service was hurried and aggressive. The waiter tried to push an overpriced double bottle of wine and some seafood apps on us. It was a little tacky to see an established place like this work so hard to upsell me. It's not like we chose it to find a bargain meal, it could have been a bit more subtle. The rack of lamb was great, steak great, sides were good. The manager/owner on the restaurant logo was walking around showing that he pays attention to his customers. Even though they told us not to rush, they began putting up chairs all around us. It was a Saturday night, so I guess the wait staff was rushing to get to the pubs. Rubbish...this was a rare night that my sweetie and I go out to celebrate our anniversary. Not coming back again unless they blow out their impressive luxury 6L & 3L bottles of wine for super cheap. read more
