My only concern was I was specifically looking for native milkweed--the type butterflies can safely lay their eggs on--and the employee I asked directed me to tropical milkweed (I assume it was because they were out of native milkweed and had lots of tropical milkweed left?). They had labels throughout the garden but I hope they consider putting a few map posts someday. Loved the dinosaur statues! And the giant Over-Cup Oak (?). Overall, great experience. read more

Fanick's Garden Center is a family owned world of plants, trees, and gardening supplies. They are open 7 days a week which may take that long to view the enormous selection of plants and trees! Parking is outside the gate where you enter near the selection of native plants. As you walk around the grounds you'll notice there's also many greenhouses containing various houseplants. There's also a large variety of vegetable plants, cactuses,herbs, annuals and perennials. I was amazed by the large variety of trees: peach, apple, avocado, soursop, guava, walnut, pecan....the list goes on! Everyone there was extremely kind and helpful. The price of the plants were very reasonable and they have a loyalty program! You have 7 days a week to go check this place out- you will not regret it! read more

Hidden gem on the SOUTHEAST side of San Antonio. Family friendly location. Parking is free and available. They have sitting areas, beautiful trees with lots of shade. Very peaceful! Restrooms are available and it's handicapped approved. I took my mom's wheelchair, and she had so much fun enjoying & seeing all the views, from the trees, beautiful plants and flowers. The prices are very reasonable, and the plant selection is incredibly diverse. There are charging outlets in the restrooms in case you need to charge your phone. Heads up There isn't any baby changing tables for any mommas. Will be returning soon! :) read more

I took a screenshot of the time I was on hold until I finally gave up. I just wanna say since they never came back on the phone that for wasting my time over 30 mins. This hidden gem has been an operating nursery since 1932! You would never guess how large it is from the outside. There's a huge selection, especially of local favorites. Their crepe myrtle section is unbelievable in its variety! Fantastic, healthy tree selection. Great array of herbs and vegetables. The prices are very affordable. Because the property is big, it's not always easy to find an employee to help you right away. But when you do find someone, they're amazing. I don't know the name of the man who helped us yesterday, but when we asked for local shrubs, he showed us several options and gave us really helpful details about all of them. He was very patient, and we got just what we wanted! read more

What a great nursery! My father bought a persimmon tree for me from this nursery 15 years ago and now I live in San Antonio and need some plants and this is where I had to come. They are a bit far from where I live but again great quality plants. Then I called a nursery close by and Fanick's has great prices. I arrive and what a lovely nursery with a great selection of plants. All the employees were sitting and nobody greeted me, just staring at me. I approached and a young man greeted me and assisted and even got me a cart to put my plants. How nice! I rolled it around and looked at plants, again employees staring at me. Finally I went to check out. The lady was friendly and answered my questions about a succulent. I really like this place and well not the most friendly people but it was blazing hot. If you don't mind being stared it... which I don't, great selection of plants at great prices. Firstly, outstanding service! My gosh were we in for a breathtaking afternoon. My partner and myself, were wanting to get our hands on a bonsai juniper and other plants so we could garden together! Fanick's Garden is just so beautiful and neatly organized - there are three greenhouses storing plants in specific temperatures. How amazing is that!? I spent some time in an extremely humidity controlled greenhouse in which fell in love with Bonsai Ficus Ginsengs! Absolutely stunning. We will definitely be back. I REALLY wanted to like this place, as I had high hopes for a locally owned garden center with so many good reviews. I received a gift card here for my birthday and was excited to explore my options. However, my experience here was terrible. I have lots of questions, as I'm new to the area and this growing zone, but not to gardening. Not a single person I interacted with here was nice. Employees walk by without a greeting or offering any help whatsoever. They sit at the register looking at their computer without acknowledging that you're ready to pay. They take cigarette breaks in the garden and get annoyed that you've interrupted their smoke time with a question. The fact that there's a smoking area within the garden area says a lot. So disgusting, nobody wants to smell or experience that while looking for plants. (See photo). It's a very rude and uninviting vibe. I spent my gift card in full so that I'd never have to come back. I have a lot of gardening & landscaping that I'd like to do on a half acre at my new home, but I won't be returning to this place again. I really expected a lot more from an established, family owned garden center. Sad. read more

Fanick's Garden Center is my current fave for finding nearly any kind of garden plant from annual flowers to shade trees. My personal interest is narrow: native Texas plants, preferably drought tolerant or downright hardy ones that require little or no supplemental watering. Besides plant selection, Fanick's has a great staff of very knowledgable people who can help you understand what suits your needs and will thrive here. In fact, some of the people there have worked there a long time and grew up in this locale, and are a treat to talk with. I've enjoyed listening to their stories and learning from their experience. By the way, Fanick's also has a shed with gardening supplies and equipment, and appears to focus on what they have determined works best around here. I should add that I'm not from around here - I'm a recent transplant from other SW states. I've sought out native-plant-focused nurseries where I've lived before, and my search here was mainly using recommendations from my new local friends and acquaintances. Fanick's has been in business since the 1930's so I'm told, and that's a testimony of their reliability in itself. I found at Fanick's the local expertise I need to help me sort out what plants will be "happiest" on my little piece of San Antonio soil. I highly recommend Fanick's. read more

This is by far my most favorite nursery. I have been going here for years. I've never had an issue with getting my vegetables to grow that I purchase from them. Whether I'm going to purchase vegetables and herbs or walking around to see what they have in stock, I like perusing the nursery. Updating the review: its actually all 5 citrus trees infected with citrus powdery mildew (pics below). I could take them back now with the leaves to prove it to Mike, but what's the point? Mike doesn't take any responsibility. I'm just going to try to save the trees and move on. Mike already said he doesn't want my business. So much for trying to support local businesses. I picked up 8 trees (5 citrus, 3 avocado) Pro- great selection of plants and trees Con- found powdery mildew on 1 tree (meyer lemon) within a week, last night[this morning it was all of the citrus trees], upon close inspection. Mike the manager said it wasn't possible and unless I brought him the infected leaves I had removed I was just wrong. A bunch of other excuses (e.g the Internet is always wrong, I did the wrong thing to remove the infected leaves, HE doesn't have any powdery mildew on HIS trees, I should have seen it when we picked up the trees, etc.) I couldn't get the infected leaves to show him because they were under all the other prunings from our garden last night. He would not look at the picture I am posting here. It was unnecessarily unpleasant trying to work it out with Mike. Be very, very, careful to inspect anything you buy because this is the response if you have a problem with anything you buy here. I see I am not the only one posting the same experience with Fanicks today. Fanicks does not stand behind the plants they sell. It seems it was a family run business with honor but new owners not keeping up previous standards. My order was $568.26. At least the 3 avocados seem to be OK, but that's because powdery mildew is specific to species. All varieties of lemon and orange trees available at Fanicks have Citrus Powdery Mildew. I really like visiting this hidden gym in the middle of the Eastside. It's a fairly large nursery with lots of plants. The inventory is always changing so you have to come often depending on the season. Lots of cool plant items inside the store. Was able to pick up a water spout today. read more

Great place, has been there for generations and I would imagine you could get anything you would like. I was able to get rodeo tomatoes from this year and last year. I have a Matsuma orange and an avocado and a Meyer lemon from them years ago. I highly recommend them. read more

I am very disappointed with the manager/owner (Mark), who has refused to give me a refund for some diseased tomato plants on invoice #207952. We purchased the new Rodeo variety on 2/21/23, and they developed a white fuzz on the new growth and the leaves began to turn black around the edges after about 3-4 weeks. So, I took samples to show to Mark, and he confirmed that they had a type of fusarium disease. I am not a novice gardener, and we have never experienced this type of disease with our tomatoes. Anyway, I asked him today for a refund of my $13.47 purchase, and he refused this small refund. Is this the way a reputable business treats its customers? I was totally surprised at his reaction and refusal to offer a refund, whereas other nurseries and garden centers like Milbergers, Lowe's, and Home Depot stand behind their plants. Potential customers should be warned that they print a statement on each receipt that states: NO PLANT GUARANTEE. read more

We have heard about this nursery, for years, on all the radio garden shows. In fact, they say they have served the San Antonio area for over 75 years. So why did we wait so long to visit? Location, location, location - over 50 miles from my house! It is located at the end of a small 2 lane road. When you first get there, it's hard to imagine the size of this place (it covers more than 10 acres). Parking it right at the gate, although I can see where they might need more parking spots. I can't say the same thing as some others about service. We were asked multiple times if we needed any assistance, and one gentleman kept kidding us about a tree following us (we took it home with us:-)). Even when we checked out, the help was really nice. They answered all our questions and let us know when vegetables would be in for fall gardening. Pricing was reasonable (in fact, the tree we bought was $10 cheaper than a big box store). Also, they carry a lot of organic products that I like. Will I return? Sure thing, when I am up for a road trip:-) read more

I love shopping at Fanick's Garden Center for my gardening needs. The staff is helpful and attentive and they have such a wide selection of beautiful, healthy plants as well as soils and fertilizers. The selection of trees is outstanding. On my last visit, I was shopping for a Jujube tree and purchased a lovely 7 foot tree. It did well with the transplant and I am happy with my purchase. I love that the people who work here are super knowledgeable! Any time I have a question, they have an answer. Like, why do the leaves on my Meyer lemon tree look faded? Or, what's that funky stuff growing on my tomatoes? And, what is the meaning of life? It's quite a long trek for us (30 minutes from the med ctr) but I would much rather buy my plants here than anywhere else. I still have plants/trees that I bought years ago that are still alive & well. Don't trust those discount nurseries or big-box garden centers cause their stuff just dies shortly after purchase. Go ahead, I dare you to find good quality plants & trees anywhere else. Sure, you can buy plants anywhere, including the big box stores and discount nurseries, but see how long they last. We've purchased numerous plants from Fanick's including a Meyer lemon tree, olive tree, Satsuma orange tree, a cute little cactus, and several potted herb plants and they're all alive and well. Take advantage of their punch card for frequent purchases. I honestly didn't think we'd be back more than once (my other half is the gardener, not so much me) but we definitely have, mostly due to the great customer service and wide array of plants at different times of the year. The cashier is always helpful with giving tips on how to sustain your new potted friends and there's always employees on the grounds who are ready & willing to assist. I could wander these grounds for hours, taking in the sun and snapping some photo-worthy pics with their various animal statues and being amazed at all of the "hybrid" trees they sell here. I mean, I never thought I'd see the day when 4 different apples and 3 different citrus fruits could be grown on one tree! Welcome to the future y'all. Safe to say that we're life-long customers of Fanick's and we already plan to take my in-laws back tomorrow to make more purchases! read more

What a slice of heaven! I love roses and they have rows and rows of them and qualified staff to advise you. The nursery is a little difficult to find but totally worth it. I felt completely safe as masks are required and everyone is wearing them. They are serious about safety. As we walked around, I had trouble deciding between the choices. No way I could take that many gorgeous plants home. The staff was helpful,recommending choices for my soil and sunlight and they are all extremely nice, unlike that large nursery across town. read more

The plants and trees are beautiful, but this is the only nursery that doesn't give some kind of guarantee on their plants. I was a customer long ago when the Fannick family was in charge of everything, they made us feel at home and made us feel special.. The customer service today was lacking. Several young people saw me carrying large trees and didn't offer to help. We bought over $150 of trees and plants and had to load them ourselves. Lots of employees standing around in the shade. I won't be Back when there are extraordinary places like Shades of Green where I can experience a wonderful gardening time and the people are amazing. read more

This place is incredible! I don't know about the other reviewers but my boyfriend and I had the absolute best customer service. Glen was super helpful but also wanted to know we were serious about our xeriscape plans so asked us to come back with more information on sizes of plants then he could help more. Well we had done our homework but he was right, we hadn't fully considered size and placement. His guidance and humor were great! The quality of the plants is the best I've seen and they had unique colors i hadn't seen elsewhere. I will never go box box store for plants again!
