I've spent quite a bit of time at University Laundromat while helping a family member recover from…read morean injury and prepare for a move from Kentucky back to California. As a result, I've become intimately familiar with both the machines and the extensive sign collection. The washers and dryers are some of the oldest machines I've encountered in a laundromat. To their credit, they generally get the job done, but the equipment appears to be a collection of different makes, models, and generations assembled over many years. If you visit, my strongest recommendation is to read every sign before doing anything. Then read them again. One washer warns customers to close the door before inserting quarters or the machine will take your money without starting. Unfortunately, I learned this firsthand. When I asked about getting my quarters back, I was promptly informed that there were multiple signs explaining this requirement. Apparently, a machine accepting payment without being ready to operate is not considered a machine problem--it's a customer-reading-comprehension problem. The signs are truly a highlight of the experience. Nearly every dryer also displays a warning not to put scent beads in the dryer. This was particularly informative, as scent beads are designed to go in the washing machine, not the dryer. I found myself wondering how many laundry-related incidents over the years led to that sign becoming necessary. Overall, the laundromat is functional and serves its purpose. If you need clean clothes, you'll probably get them. Just come prepared to navigate a fascinating museum of laundry equipment, accompanied by an extensive educational signage program designed to ensure that any mistake you make is clearly established as your fault before it happens.
