After recovering from the flu, a lot of my personal self care fell by the way side. My hair became unkempt and I decided to get my hair trimmed by walking into Fantastic Sam's. Next to me, a stylist was coloring someone's hair and I had no idea that the fumes aggravated/irritated my throat that I had a full on coughing attack in the salon chair. I felt like I was choking. Note to self: make sure to bring a water bottle next time and know that you are hyper sensitive to chemicals. Emerita brought me water and a KN95 mask while she finished the sides. Look I've been coming here for more than 15 years. I know every one of the ladies inside. This is a Salon. They only know how to cut women's hair. They don't know how to cut men's hair. They scrape by with men's haircuts because they deal with men above the age of 50 who don't know better. And won't complain. They don't know how to properly fade a haircut. They can't blend between varying sizes of hair so the fade looks like they took a weed wackier to an over grown lawn. They only know how to use scissors to cut hair. If you want to blend the sides and have a clean hair cut you will be let down. They don't know how to use clippers. They also don't know how to line up your hair in a straight line. So if you want a crisp nice haircut that you want to show off for a nice event, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. These are nice ladies but when it comes to haircuts that make you look professional and well kept... this is not the place. The only reason I even stopped by was because my barber was out of town, and I thought cutting the sides would be quick and easy. This will be my last time coming here and I just wanted to warn any male customer who might need a cut. They do not know how to cut men's hair. read more

I had called the day before to inquire about how much hair color for the roots would cost and the person on the phone quoted me $55 however after the service was done, the hairstylist, Jenny charged me $75 and said there is no $55 root coverage price even though it clearly says on the website. Absolutely awful experience at Fantastic Sam's in Hastings Ranch (3645 E Foothill Blvd). I really wish I had read the reviews beforehand--so many people warned about the stylist named Jenny, and they were right. I came here for a simple haircut. Jenny was my stylist. She told me hair cut is $40. Right away, she insisted on washing my hair, even though I told her I had just washed it the night before. I didn't want the wash, but she insisted--fine. After the cut, I expected her to dry my hair like any normal salon would. But she said, "If I use a comb, I'll have to charge you extra." I thought she was joking. Like excuse me what? I told her, "My hair is dripping wet. No one walks out of a salon like this." She replied, "Okay, I'll dry it." I made it very clear: "I don't need any styling--I'm heading to the gym after this." She agreed and began drying. But when she said she was done, my hair was still soaking wet--at least 70% wet. I said, "Are you serious? My hair looks like I just got out of the shower." She responded, "That's why I said I'd dry it." I told her, "If you insist on washing my hair, the least you can do is dry it properly." So she finished drying it--finally. Then came the kicker. At the register, she told me it was $70. I was stunned. I asked why, and she said, "I told you there's an extra charge if I use a comb." What?! She didn't style it. She barely dried it, and only after I insisted. She said, "Hair can be considered dry as long as it's not soaking wet or dripping." Here's the issue: if you're going to wash and cut someone's hair, it's common sense that you don't send them out soaking wet. Jenny clearly has a pattern of drying hair just enough to upsell customers into paying more--and then calls it "styling" if a comb is involved. If she had just said upfront, "Drying with a comb is an extra $30--do you want that or not?" I would've appreciated the transparency. But instead, it felt very vicious, manipulative and dishonest. This behavior isn't just bad service--it feels deliberate. And based on other reviews, I'm not the only one who's been through this exact scenario. I refused to pay the $70 of course and I will never return. To anyone considering this place: be warned, especially if you're dealing with Jenny. The shady upselling is real. read more

Narine was my stylist and she is amazing! I haven't gotten my hair cut in over a year and she was so mindful of sanitizing everything and really making me feel safe and comfortable. I showed her my inspiration pictures and she made it happen. Very personable and talked through all the steps to make sure we were agreeing on the color and length. I got balayage and a trim and it took about 3 hours, $200 - so worth it! I can't wait to go back to her again and would recommend anyone go to her for your color or cut. read more

I came here because I wanted a nice blowout. I called in on a Saturday and was told to come in because they were not busy. I got in and still had to wait to be called up, which is fine. I got one of the employees to work on my hair who barely talked. I showed her a photo and she did such a horrible blow dry and then asked if I wanted hair spray. I asked her to use a curling iron and she curled one side one way and the other side another. I was unhappy and told her to redo the one side. She said sure and proceeded to curl the same way. I gave up and then left. I was halfway home when I realized I shouldn't have to pay for a horrible blowout. I came back and asked for another employee to fix my hair. Aline was a saint! She blow dried my hair again and fixed my hair.. thanks to her I left the salon looking decent. I will be back to get my hair done by Aline. But for the other employee whose name I won't mention, it was definitely 1 star service. read more

I've lived in Arcadia for 6.5 years. This week I visited a new to me salon, like none other I've ever frequented. I'm 68. PROS Everyone was greeted enthusiastically. I was taken immediately. Everyone seemed to be known and called by name. I received a pixie cut , no wash or blow dry, by my request, since my physical state doesn't allow for longer appt. Stylist EMY was very friendly and hospitable to everyone entering. She's been there for 25 years. The cost was $28 and I left a grateful tip. Cut well done! The stylist was firm with him after he was clearly nervous. Is he an attentive client who does everything when asked - no, he's 6 and uncomfortable. I booked the Groupon package which was full highlights and treatment and got treated so poorly by Jenny because she later found out I paid through groupon. She said "You should of told me first it was from groupon because you have to pay an additional $50 for toner, $$$ extra for medium length hair etc. UPSELLING LIKE CRAZY I felt uncomfortable. Long story short, It shouldn't matter how you purchase, I should be treated like any other guest. I still left her a $20 dollar tip because I wasn't an evil person but please GO ELSEWHERE!!! I should have mention to Maria 14 years of experience .. that she should use vaseline around my ears & other parts of my forehead and scalp, to prevent the coloring to stick to my ears and other parts of my face.. maybe if she would cut of those over exaggerated nail Extensions..! I used to come here all the time when Brenda was here and she cut my hair for at least 12 years at this Fantastic Sams. Brenda was the best. Unfortunately, she moved to Las Vegas and now works at a Fantastic Sams there. Since she left, I've gone to other haircutting places out closer to where I live nowadays (San Dimas area). Since I happened to be in the Pasadena area this morning, I thought I would stop in for a haircut. Alina was the stylist that cut my hair today. She's no Brenda but Alina did do a very good job on my hair. This Fantastic Sams has always employed pretty decent haircutters with experience (unlike some other Fantastic Sams locations I've been to out by me that apparently only hire rookies fresh out of stylist school). The cost today was $20.95 for the basic haircut. Even though that's more expensive than what I remember here, it's still not too bad. read more

Where should I start? When I took my seat floor was covered with chopped hair surrounding my chair. My hair was washed and clean and even still wet. I told the lady again what I want just regular straight nothing fancy. // I called before coming but nobody took notes or scheduled me to cause everything and even the lady who answered the phone forgot about me. // She asked me if I was told how much it would coast ( style and the person who answered my call was the same people. ) I told her that she forgot to mention. She immediately started to talk with another stylist to see how much she should be charging. (no set price? Really???))) She told me 40$ and I was ok since I really thought that is the actual price. And I was running late from a party so no time to think. Lady was nice... But... She was dragging my hair while was brushing it very brutally and I have bleached hair . She was reaping my hair off and excusing herself with " sweety your hair is damaged look). I know they are damaged but it is tough at school. NEVER BRUSH WET HAIR LIKE A MANIAC STARING FROM ROOTS. Then we used metal round hot brush to com the rest of my still wet hair and my hair stuck in the brush She dried my bang very last so they were very much dry. Without using extra water on it she gave my bangs volume like I am from 80. So I asked her to fix it since it supposes to be flat. She just dragged my hair again from left and right. Overall hair look ok vangs are horribly styled. As I came to play I saw this. I didn't want to argue so I just paid her and quickly snapped the picture. A few months ago I got my hair cut by a hairstylist who didn't really listen to what I wanted and I ended up with a haircut I was unhappy with and just felt like I wasted my money. I have very long hair and didn't want it just butchered again but also wasn't trying to spend $75+ dollars for a haircut. I came to fantastic sams and Alina helped me. She was very welcoming and knowledgeable. She made sure I was okay with the amount of hair being cut before she cut it and made me feel super comfortable and at ease that she knew what she was doing. She took her time and made sure it was perfect, she didn't rush which I was glad for.
