I purchased a dozen freshly made Chicken Tamales to add to my Saturday supper and the filling was moist and the flavor was off the chart full of goodness. The family owned team especially Ma and PA know their recipes and quickly serve up scrumptious to go orders that are ready to eat. The tamales of the day depends on what they have cooked-- today it was chicken -- fresh, moist and well seasoned. There are times beef or pork may be available with pork being my favorite. The store is full of grocery items from Mexico especially the salsa which you need to go with your tamales. The friendly and pleasant atmosphere is very neighborly making you want to stay and browse the specialty items. So venture out and try their ready to eat - to go items, and don't forget the green or red salsa to top off your tamales!

We've been to Fogo du Chao, which is definitely a very upscale version of this style of restaurant. With the understanding that you get what you pay for, we did not expect something that fancy. Still, this was an expensive indulgence for us - we did not order alcohol or dessert, having only fountain pop and the full churrasco experience. For two people, this was over $100. We live a ways north of Ames, so we had over an hour drive to come. Unfortunately, we were disappointed over all. First, the good: plenty of parking, very clean, cute, spacious - it was not busy, so not noisy. The service was quick and efficient but impersonal. We never had to wait for a drink refill, but never had a, "my name is, and I'll be your server today" kind of person. Everything was very clean. Second, the negatives: We prefer to follow a keto/carnivore-ish eating pattern, so I was very excited to go to a place that seemed to emphasize meats. We did visit the salad bar at first, just to see what was there. We sampled a few of the offerings - the cucumber salad had literally no discernible dressing of any kind. A tomato salad was mushy and mealy. My husband tried the cheesy mashed potatoes and said they were dry and lacking in flavor. There was a pasta alfredo, but the alfredo sauce was ridiculously watery.  The meats, when they came, were merely okay. I don't prefer chicken, but the chicken was good, well seasoned and well cooked, and not too dry. The pork selections were gristly and tough. The beef selections - when they got to our table - were also tough and unseasoned. I like beef in almost any style, and this was okay, but nothing unique or delicious. I could have cooked it better at home. Nothing caramelized or crispy on the outside. Often, we would see the beef come out, and by the time they made a small loop in the restaurant, it was gone before they got to our table. We only got steak once, though we were offered chicken, pork and sausage several times. We had the barbeque beef, and this also was a nice flavor, but this beef was overcooked and very tough. Overall, this was not worth the money to us. I am sad, because I like this style of restaurant, and it is the only one in Des Moines, and I really want it to succeed. However, I've had better salad bar selections in variety and freshness at Chinese buffets, and I could get a huge, delicious steak and grilled shrimp at Texas Roadhouse, Outback Steakhouse, etc., for a fraction of the price. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this to anyone.

Apparently Sunday night is the best night to go enjoy this restaurant as they do a fantastic $100 split plate special. The special included a starter (wedge salad), entree (which for us was a filet mignon) as well as two sides and a dessert. We added the seafood tower, which is also a Sunday special for $40. The seafood tower was amazing. It included two scallop Rockefellers, a lobster tail, a ton of muscles and a few jumbo shrimp. The one we opted for was roasted, but they also have a chilled version. The service was absolutely fantastic and the meal was amazing. My only complaint was the drinks in the lounge were a bit expensive before our meal. I had an old-fashioned for $30 and my wife had an Aperol spritz around the same price. The cocktails were very good just about double what were used to paying at nice restaurants in the area. We will absolutely be back to enjoy this dining establishment again in the future, and it will absolutely be on a Sunday as you get the best bang for your buck!

We were greeted when we came in the door and the service from the time we entered until the time we left was outstanding. As we are celebrating our anniversary, our table was decorated for that which was a nice touch. We looked over the very extensive menus and did settle back in on the $99 dinner for two. In theory it is smaller portions than some of their other dishes, but there was more than enough food there for the two of us. We got the filet mignon, which was wonderfully prepared and an outstanding cut of meat. We got the 50-50 potatoes, and asked later what the 50-50 meant and discovered it's 50% potato and 50% butter and cream. They are delicious but decadent! We also got the asparagus which was very good. It had a wonderful sauce, and was tender and flavorful. We also each got the wedge salad which was almost a meal in itself. And we each got the carrot cake for dessert. We had to bring a lot of the carrot cake home because we were quite topped off at that point. The carrot cake is a slightly different twist than some, but very good nonetheless. The wine list is very good and prices are what you would expect at an establishment of this type. I spotted an e.ployee who was taking another customer to an item. Once she was done I asked her about the flour. Unfortunately they did not carry it. But she was very kind and we had a discussion about sour dough bread (which is what i am in the process of making.) On another shopping trip I was looking for chocolate covered coffee beans. I found a giant container of them. When I was checking out, the cashier asked me if found everything OK. I said I wish that you had a smaller container of them. (I was using them to decorate a cheesecake.) The employee said actually we have these smaller packages over here and grabbed one for. It saved me multiple dollars and I still have some left. They also have the best flowers...and they are reasonably priced. They also have cute plants as well
