Was recommended this place specifically for their scallops so that's what I had to try. The dinner is hibachi style and comes with soup, salad (you can pick your dressing), shrimp, veggies which you can get with or without chili garlic, streamed rice or fried rice for an up charge, choice of protein, and noodles at the end. By the end of the meal we were stuffed! The place is pretty small with a few grills/tables where multiple parties sit together. Our chef was okay but didn't really do any of the showmanship that you usually see with hibachi. He was friendly and the staff that refills your drinks were constantly coming up to the table. read more

It's always a good night at... The greatest tasting show in town...! Ohana Steakhouse! If you're a fan you know you just sung that last line in your head. Our party of 11 (mostly former ADPers) was seated promptly at 515 pm. I had my usual... The Royal Combination with filet (medium rare) and scallops. Extra garlic and chili pepper on my fried rice and vegetables ($34.50). If you've never added extra garlic and chili pepper to your fried rice and mixed vegetables... Do it! You can thank me later! I don't drink a lot, but I did try the key lime martini tonight ($10). Very good! People are going to argue for the other various steakhouses I'm sure... For me Ohana is about nostalgia, consistency, and family and friends. I moved to the Des Moines metro in 1992 and I feel like my first visit to Ohana wasn't too far behind that. Two wives, two divorces, multiple girlfriends, many birthday parties...my own and others. One of my long time go tos along with Great China (now closed) and King and I (now Eat Thai). Ohana Steakhouse was super fun last night for a birthday dinner. Our chef was awesome, food was yummy, and the company is always a fav. Service was tentative and informative. Bartenders were helpful and friendly. Wings: tiny in size but mighty in flavor. Half spicy half not. Bday girl wanted half not-spicy or we would've gotten all spicy. She loved them, I had one bite and liked the spicy rub and sauce. Soup: basic broth. Nothing to write home about. I got the combo: steak, scallops, add lobster and calamari. It was awesome but I took most of it home with "Bob's" to go. Fried rice: add chilis and garlic was tasty, though I only got in one bite. Not enough room in the belly for more than that! Noodles: basic but good, also add chilis and garlic for some extra flavor. They don't do to-go's, normally, but they will cook a meal for a to-go box stationed at an extra seat. We were in town to visit family and we thought it would be fun to do hibachi so we could have dinner and entertainment. Boy were we wrong. Our chef was terrible! He barely interacted with us. I pointedly asked him a few times about flipping things up or chatting to us about what he was doing- nothing. We purposely chose this because our son has been to a similar restaurant and loved all the fun chopping and cooking entertainment. Tonight we got none of that. So disappointing. We would have gone to dinner somewhere else if we would have known. The table behind us had an entertaining chef - he was talking and doing fun things. The table applauded and had a great time. It was good food but also crowded due to sitting in a u shape around the grill. Would have been nice to know what to expect. Unbeknownst to us the dinner you want is served little at a time till the end. It's nice that it's fresh and hot but if you wait till the end to eat your actual meal will be cold. Ohana Steakhouse is unique in that it serves up expertly prepared meals, comedy club entertainment, and the rock solid consistency of McDonald's. I have been fortunate enough to dine at Ohana's once or twice a year for several years. Frequently the location of choice at which to celebrate momentous events in the lives of our family and friends, sitting around the kitchen table here gets you laughs, daring acts of cutlery juggling, a fine meal and a shared dining experience like few others. At this point, we typically order the same meals with each visit (steak and scallops), and without fail, they are expertly prepared to our specifications with every visit, without fail. No small feat given the number of orders simultaneously being prepared at the table. It is difficult to go wrong with any of the items found on the menu. The best recommendation that can be made is to make use of all the sauces available to you. You could be dining at any surf-n-turf operation, but if you have decided to dine at Ohana's, make the most of the Japanese vibe and enjoy the total experience. read more

I have traveled extensively throughout the US on business. I recently moved to Arizona from California, and when people ask me my favorite restaurant in the entire world I tell them it's Ohana Steakhouse in Iowa. People are always shocked until I explain how amazing the food is, how amazing the people are, and what an amazing experience it is. I have been going to Ohana steakhouse since 1994. It's still amazing every time. If I'm within a couple of states, I always make it back for dinner!! It took them years to convince me to try the scallops and the shrimp because I don't normally eat seafood. After Ohana, I now eat shrimp. I've had scallops in Maui and they were horrible. I will only eat scallops at Ohana. Their special sauce is amazing. read more

We dined their last evening and it was great. We were surprised at how much effort they put into our food allergy issues. When we were deciding where to eat, I didn't think we could get in to Ohana with less than an hour's notice. Turns out that there was an opening timed exactly right for us. I asked about gluten and dairy free options and was assured there would be several choices. When we got there, the staff was very attentive to my question about dietary restrictions. The owner made it a point to have us seated at a special table and to clearly discuss my dining companion's dietary restrictions. A lot of places are now making arrangements for gluten free food, but none of them go as far as Ohana did. Dairy and egg restrictions made it even more difficult, but they pulled it off wonderfully. Everyone was clear on what could be ordered and what could not. They suggested some alternatives that worked out great. The chef was very personable and we had a nice conversation about our mutual experiences over the years in Des Moines. When I mentioned that I missed the bean sprouts that they used to have a couple of decades ago, he asked if I wanted to substitute them for the noodles. Since I greatly prefer the sprouts to the noodles, it was a welcome change that I didn't know was an option. He also mentioned that there are other options too. Some of them are even acceptable for Vegan diners. All in all, an excellent experience. One thing to note is that their cleanliness was well above average. They seem to be real sticklers on keeping everything cleaner than most places do. A nice touch. read more

They have a full bar......the men in our group were drinking double mud slides...they said they were amazing. The majority of our group ordered the scallops. It's was good but not great. We are use to Omaha's Kobe steakhouse. Nice people and good service. The food just wasn't that good.

If you are generally an unhappy person, choose to demand respect rather than earn it, or just have not developed basic social skills, please do not come here. You very often are sat with other people, so you will have an opportunity to meet new people if you want, but easily can choose not to do so also. This is THE place to go if you are wanting a night of laughter, a little too much good food, or a pro-family experience. It is also perfect for first dates, business dinners, or other events where you are not absolutely sure the conversation will flow perfectly for several hours. My personal favorites are the royal combo with steak and panga, a bottle of saki, and a tiny scoop of ice cream with chocolate sauce afterward (I specifically don't eat the whole meal to save room). I know that everyone else loves the scallops and some even get the scallop sauce on other stuff. The key to this place, like everywhere on earth, is to communicate early so they can plan, and be pleasant. If you follow those two simple rules I promise you will have a five star experience here. I am sure that management wants everyone to have a great experience, and I know they do their best, but personaI am happy that a few of the haters are choosing not to return. read more

Great googily moogily! This place gives you so much food!!! I came here to celebrate my co-worker's birthday last night with our other co-workers while in town. The service from the bartender was great, and she was very friendly. Our waitress at our hibachi table was...nice, but clearly in a hurry to speed things along. I know that there's a system in place but she was somewhat curt in her interactions with us. Our chef was great! He was funny and very skilled at his cooking and tricks for our table. We all liked him. The food was very good and was in abundance! Your meal comes with soup, salad, veggies, shrimp, steamed or fried rice, and AFTER you get your entree meat, these amazing garlic noodles! I selected the royal combo with filet mignon and scallops. WOW! I mean wow! The steak was prepared just to my liking of medium and the scallops were delectable! I love the special cream sauce that is served on the scallops. Also, you can't beat the price. Most of the meat selections and combinations are under $25. I probably don't need to anything for the next week due to how much food i ate last night. Still, this was a delicious and memorable meal and I highly recommend it! read more

We have been back numerous times since my initial review. Per usual, we've always enjoyed the wait staff here. Food is decent. They used to do their daily specials (Sun - Thurs), two meals for $30. They recently increased to $45 which really does not make it a special anymore. I realize with the pandemic food prices increased but this is a steep increase. We're pretty bummed. I miss this spot. It's one of my son's favorite places. So much he has tried all the chefs and has a couple of favorites. Obviously he wasn't the only one- three groups of us all asked for Tommy that night. During the meal I could see why. The food was wonderful and his personality fantastic. There was a toddler and 8 year old at the table and he kept them engaged during the meal and altered some preparations just for them. What's not to enjoy watching your food being cooked in front of you and being able to talk to the chef. We left it to his judgment to prepare a couple of items and they were fantastic. And Chef didn't roll his eyes when I asked for extra scallop sauce on my fried rice- damn it's a tasty combination. Chef also took his time in fixing dinner, no rushing us thru the meal. And you really need to pace yourself because it's a ton of food. Shrimp appetizer, salad, grilled veggies, rice, pasta and mushrooms, and meat. That's the meal unless you add any extras. If you do, call ahead and see if they are serving the cold smoked steak and order it. It does not disappoint. Highly recommend calling ahead for reservations and chef choice. read more

I'd been here once a few years ago, as well as 30 some years ago. Ohana has stood the test of time. Our birthday party of 8 had an additional couple seated with us. Service was efficient and pleasant. We started with warm towels, then enjoyed salad and soup. The ginger dressing is awesome. The salad was fine. Our meal unfolded in front of us and was tasty. I took Yelp advice and had the scallops. They were tasty, but the "lemon sauce" was overpowering and covered their flavor. I actually scraped it off. The veggies and mushrooms are always awesome and you can add your choice of sauces. They end the prep with a "noodle" or "sprouts " cleaning fry! I ended up taking them home. The hot tea that comes with the meal is a nice accompaniment. Our chef didn't do anything special as he cooked. He tossed a knife at the beginning and dropped it to the floor.
