This place and the staff are amazing! My husband and I stopped in for dinner since we were in the area and have wanted to check this place out for a while. We were treated so wonderfully and our waiter and the general manager went above and beyond to make us happy. Our wonderful waiter Derek welcomed us and was excited to learn that this was our first visit. He was friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely interested in helping us choose something on the menu that we would enjoy. I decided to get a supreme pizza because I like a lot of toppings on my pizza and my husband got the cavatelli because he was in the mood for pasta. The food came out extremely fast. Unfortunately, I didn't like my pizza very much because the center of the crust was very limp and droopy and the toppings fell off because they were kind of heavy. The outer edge of the crust was crispy but the middle of the crust seemed like maybe it needed to be cooked longer. I felt like the pizza should have been better. My husband loved his cavatelli and gave me a bite. I agreed that it was very good. I was wishing that I had ordered that, too. When Derek came and checked on us, I debated on whether I should say something about the pizza. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. He could probably see the disappointment on my face. He said he really wanted to know what we thought about the food so I told him I was disappointed with the pizza. He was very understanding about it and said he didn't like his pizza droopy either. But we told him the cavatelli was excellent. It was a little bit sweet with the right amount of spiciness. A few minutes later, Courtney the general manager came to our table and apologized about the pizza. She was truly sorry about the pizza and even said she talked to the chef about cooking it longer but he said it might burn the pizza if they did that. And it had so many toppings on it that it might not make a difference on the crust. So she wanted me to pick something else on their menu for free. I was going to decline but she insisted, so I chose the cavatelli. They made it for me and brought it out quickly. We appreciated everything Derek and the GM did to make it up to us which really wasn't necessary. They went above and beyond. I felt bad about it but they wanted our first visit there to be great. Then when Derek brought our bill to us, we saw that they comped both the pizza and the extra cavatelli. So they were only charging us for my husband's meal. AND Derek brought us a free dessert. My husband and I were flabbergasted. They did way more for us than they should have. We have never been treated so well at a restaurant before. I didn't think that restaurants and waitstaff like this existed. It seems like since Covid, when you go to restaurants, they're understaffed or the workers don't seem like they want to be there and barely acknowledge you. But here they bend over backwards to make sure you're happy. I love that and appreciate everything they did. The atmosphere is casual yet upscale. It feels cozy and welcoming, too. This was our first experience with Urban Cellars, arriving at 7:30pm. Hodgepodge entrance with wine for purchase to the right and a maze behind the host stand. It was dirty and the smell - well - after using the restroom, I realized its origin, confirming my impressions. We found bathrooms with broken fixtures and filthy. Service - well - there wasn't service. "Busy night -earlier" Waited fifteen minutes - served "city water" and then told they have filtered when I ordered bottled water, because there was a smell in water. Food - if you like salt, heavy cheese for fries, no ketchup- this is your place. Should I mention that they are generous with grease. Overall - I'm amazed by the recommendation. Amazing hidden gem in West Des Moines! It was a Saturday night double date for us and it was a great spot for a party of four. Had the salmon and steak ribeye. Started off with fried zucchini patties and the Inside Out Crab Rangoon dip. All of it was delicious. Service was a little off with our server but she got what we needed. Our server was a little quirky so we had a couple misunderstandings. She was fine overall though. The restaurant was loud and packed for a Saturday night dinner time. We waited 20 for a booth. Most seating was high top tables. There were several booths already reserved when we got there at 5:45. Party of four does not need reservations when I called Nina's told first come first serve. Our party of 9 had nothing negative to say about Urban Cellar. We were in town for a hockey tournament and had a break for lunch. Urban Cellar is conveniently close to the Rec Plex and was able to accommodate our party immediately. The restaurant is slightly more upscale than I anticipated which made me nervous for our all our kids but the host and waitress were on their A game and got us drinks, appetizers and food quickly. Our group had an assortment of meals across the menu - burgers, barbacoa tacos, pasta, pizza, salads and brunch. Everything was fantastic! We wish we had another break to come back here for a meal. After driving in circles and being turned away from less delicious places, we ended up at Urban Cellar. This place was WONDERFUL!!!!! Our group of 6 had a little of everything, so I assure you, this is not a review of one plate. I had a salmon dish that was delicious. Salmon on a bed of perfectly cooked asparagus topped with a tomato salsa and a dollop of parmesan creme. I tasted the shot rib which was a generous portion of melt in your mouth tender meat with steamed veggies. Another friend had sesame crusted seared Tuna, and others had Pizza and salads topped with chicken. This place was one of the best restaurants and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I will go back. Just tried UC for lunch and it was amazing. The cool and kind hostess fixed my takeout order and I had the most delicious Cuban sandwich I have had since 20 years ago in San Jose and Miami. Today was lunch for us. It was the bosses treat. Tabletop of 7 got in right at 11. We got seated and helped for drinks right away. We reviewed the menu and reviewed the chefs special. There were lots of yummy things to choose from. I am a little late posting this so the menu I am posting in my photos is from March 2024. The ambiance was very nice as we were there for a work lunch. It was right after opening and the place did not take long to fill up. They have both booth and table seating. There are multiple TVs hanging from the walls. We had a table top of 7 so the food did take a little to come out. My coworkers had the Salmon Salad before and raved about it. I confirmed that the Salmon was not going to be cold and ordered from the special menu the Blue Berry Salmon Salad. This was fantastic and hit the spot. It was Salmon with honey crisp apples, goad cheese and candied pecans. I think the Blue berries were dehydrated cause they were tiny and it was with a sherry vinaigrette dressing. 100% recommend. Sorry If this is not on the menu anymore, but it was delicious. My boss really enjoyed the place so I can say we will be back and I will have to try another version of the same salad cause now I will be raving about it. read more

Stopped in on a Saturday for lunch with the girl's. We weren't in a rush, but the food took a while to arrive. For starters we had tuna tar tar, crab Rangoon dip & the mama's meatballs. The meatball were ok, the sauce was yummy. We ordered shrimp tacos, chicken & jalapeño pasta & chicken deburgo for entrees. The blackened shrimp tacos that were just "meh". Yelp brought my wife and I to this restaurant. We were not disappointed. We went early on a Friday to take advantage of their Happy Hour specials. Domestic beers are way cheap. House wines are way cheap, and surprisingly good. My wife is a bit of a wine snob, and she found the house Pinot Grigio very good for the price. It was a happy surprise for her. We ate all apps. Tried the calamari and Margherita pizza. The calamari was outstanding. The pizza was fine, nothing real special in my opinion. We then finished it up with the crab Rangoon dip, which was basically a deconstructed crab Rangoon. Came with won ton chips. Really really good. And a lot of foot for the price. Didn't come close to eating it all. Service was outstanding. Happy hour deals are legit. The average age of patrons seems to be around 50, or at least it was the Friday night we went. Not an issue for us, just something we observed. This is a solid 4 stars. I'd have to go back and try some actual meals to further evaluate the food. Had pleasuring of dining few Mondays ago and took advantage of the Monday special, which includes two entrées with choice of soup/ salad, dessert and a bottle of wine. For an appetizer we started with a Ahi tuna tartare over pico de gallo. It was very good. For main course went with steak DeBurgo over garlic mashed. Second entree was chicken and roasted brussels sprouts. Finished the meal with a slice of Keylime pie. Had a fantastic experience with a very nice server. What a warm, inviting classy place (see my inside pics). The 4 of us went there for lunch and were able to have a very enjoyable lunch and conversation without being rushed or talked over by others. Our waiter was quick and attentive. We started with the Onion Strings, see my pic. There was ample for the 4 of us. As you can see in my pic, they were deep fried and very crispy. The strings of onions were just as named - battered thin lengths of mild onions. The side sauce is mayo based and thinly flavored (you may want to request an alternative). Their Classic Burger was on point. I ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly. While the bun was light and airy, it held together to the last bite. I'd add a bit more salt to enhance the flavoring. The side sweet potato fries was addictive. In the foreground was a side of dipping honey for the fries - this hit the mark for me. We also had the Salmon BLT. As you can see in my pic, the Salmon fills the whole sandwich. It was cooked just right and was still moist. The bacon added the right amount of saltiness and the garlic aioli added flavor. The Brussel sprouts were cooked well and the grilled, smoky flavor came through. As a heads up, we found the Cavatelli to have quite a bit of heat to it. We ordered and took out desserts home, so the pics terribly under represented how good they were. Even a long car ride home and many hours later we really enjoyed the Chocolate Cake and Crème Brule. We look forward to our next visit. read more

I have dined at this restaurant several times when on trips for business and this visit did not disappoint! I had the scallop dish which was beautifully put together. The whipped potatoes may be the best I've ever had...in my life. So, in full disclosure I'm trying to follow a low carb diet. The operative word here is "trying" as I literally could not resist these potatoes. SO damn good! I almost licked the plate, seriously! The dish was a little small in terms of portion size as I got 4 scallops for $26. However, with how high food prices are now, this is probably the right size dish at the right price. Now, for drinks, I took advantage of happy hour and got the house wine, Pinot Grigio, for only $4/glass. Yes, only $4! The wine was good although I have had many of the white wine offerings here and they are all good choices. The highlight for me was the sangria. It was a hot evening so this was my refreshing dessert. So good, so crisp and delicious! I love this place and highly recommend it. Food was great, drinks were great and service was great! read more

I was the first Yelp review when they opened a few years ago, and our experience was OK, but we weren't wowed, so we hadn't been back. We decided it was past time to give them another try, and I'm glad we did. We arrived on a fairly busy Wednesday night and were shown to a high table near the entrance to the dining room. It definitely appeared that many of the diners preferred the booths and lower tables, but we were fine with ours hightop. The host was busy seating people and clearing tables and was doing a great job! Our server Carter, showed up quickly and got in our drink orders. When he came back we ordered dinner - all very quick and efficient. I got the Potato Crusted Barramundi - the fish was meaty, tasty, and nicely pan fried. I went with Brussels Sprouts for my side - there were a ton of them! They were nicely cooked, and fairly plain with just minimal flavoring. OK overall, but I'd probably go for a different option next time. My wife got the Chicken Brussels dish - now that is the way to get your Brussels Sprouts! It was a very good combination and the sauce helped compliment the veggies and the rest of the dish. Good, tender chicken as well. The salads were flavorful and fresh, and our drinks were great! I got a martini - well made and reasonably priced. My wife got the Chandon split and was pleasantly surprised it was the French Chandon, not the California. Both are very good, but the French version was a great bargain. So now we have vowed to come back more often after a 2+ year hiatus. The chicken was so tender you could cut it with your fork and had so much flavor. The Chicken Bacon Pesto Flatbred was packed with flavor. Will definitely be back. read more

Only downside was we weren't aware they didn't have a daily special on Tuesday / Thursdays, but will for sure be back to try their Monday deal for 2 entrees, a bottle of wine and dessert for cheap! Our server was training some new staff but still didn't miss a beat with catering to all of our needs. Loved seeing how organized she was while still handling the growing crowd. Stopped in here because banana leaf was not open. I have gluten and dairy allergies so it can be hard to go out to eat. Came out to eat on basically the coldest day ever. I mostly came because I saw on my gluten free app finder that this place has gluten free chocolate cake. Yeah that did not happen. They apparently have not had that cake in a while. Sadly everything contains dairy. Luckily I brought my gluten cutter pill. Took it before I started eating. We had the fire shrimp to start and was so good! It comes with a side of bread which is the same bread they use for their buns (contains gluten). I could have the shrimp but they are cooked heavily in garlic butter. I ordered the urban carbonara with a side of chicken verde soup. My mom had the salmon burger with sweet potato fries. The food was good but even with my gluten cutter my stomach hurts. The pasta actually had a pasta taste to it. Which can be hard to find when it comes to gluten free pasta. Most everything has some spice or kick to it. Probably not going to come again. But my mom is hooked. The burgers do not have gluten free buns so the burger is just without the bun. Most of the gluten free options or gluten free alterations are not substitutions but subtractions and you still pay the price for it. read more

So today I had lunch with my manager and my two up who was in from the ATL at Urban Cellar. First time here. We had an order of the inside out crab rangoon and the blackened shrimp nachos as starters. I ordered the creole pasta, my manager ordered the cellar Philly with brussel sprouts, and my two up ordered the peppercorn steak deburgo also with brussel sprouts. The food was fantastic. We were all happy with our choices. Plates were all but licked clean. Service was great. Our server was pulling double duty as the bartender. No pictures. Didn't feel appropriate at a business lunch. We finished our meal and were standing outside visiting. The fire alarm started going off. It was then I saw one of the most epic things I've ever seen. Everyone was exiting the restaurant. Most people with only their personal belongings... Except this one guy. He exited with his beer in one hand. His entree, napkin, and silverware in the other hand. Walked past the rest of the customers and took a seat at a table on the patio to continue his meal. I was dumbstruck. Not all heroes wear capes! Now the big question. Was it his food or did he walk by an unattended table on his way out... "Hmmmm. That looks good! And oh look... A beer too!" The ambiance of Urban Cellar is nice, dark with subtle lighting. Back in the day it would have been a really great first date spot. Seating is a mix of booths and tables and chairs. The portions are ample and the prices are reasonable. The waitress is very pushy that I get an alcohol drink and couldn't understand that this was all the food I wanted to order. It's not like that place was busy and I was taking up a table that was needed. The first dish was advertised as Burrata Meatballs but really, it was just ricotta cheese in the middle of 3 big meatballs. Tasty, but definitely not Burrata. When I questioned the waitress about it, her response was that Burrata means different things to different people...??? What? No! The salmon salad was all right, but was definitely over-cooked salmon. Look, the food isn't terrible, but for the price - I expected much much better food AND service. We've been on the lookout for a welcoming neighborhood restaurant, bar and grill. Although this establishment has been around for a while, it was our first time dining there. We were pleased to discover this locally owned gem. We savored some pasta, a classic hamburger with fries, and zucchini as an appetizer. The food was of high quality, reasonably priced. Marry Ann, our server, was very friendly and shared both the history of the place and some specials. FABULOUS dinner night out with my arm candy. Peppercorn Deburgo was INSANE! Perfectly medium rare, garlic mash is one to write home about, sautéed mushrooms stole my heart. Leftovers were equally as delicious. Salmon salad was good, not wowed off my feet. Sherry vinegarette was meh; apples and egg combo felt off. This salad would be better with a different dressing and slight variation on toppings. Chicken Verde soup was great. Of all things, the best oyster crackers ever (really...crackers?). But for real, a bowl of this and crackers on a cold night hit the spot. Flavor was spot on, little spicy but not killer, broth had solid flavor. Calamari appetizer was delicious, not fried small calamari bits but, rather, plentiful calamari tenders and a Thai sweet chili sauce. FYI, this was equally as good leftover, cold for breakfast the next day. Judge me all you want, it was delish. PEI black mussels were tasty. Quite a few not opened so that was kind of a bummer but I would definitely order this again. Key Lime Pie...HELLO! Can't go wrong, and I love all things key lime anyhow. This was extra sour and tangy. Mmnnnn. Quilt Red Blend wine was wonderful. Out of the Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon but this was a great alternative offered, and we were happy with the suggestion. Nick - service was excellent. Attentive, helpful, not pushy, kind, all the best qualities of a server. This will definitely be our new go to honey hole for a nice, semi romantic meal together. Stopped in here to get a "quick bite to eat." I advised them that I was allergic to mushrooms and that was no problem. They adjusted something I wanted so I got the carbonara. My husband had chicken jalapeño pasta. He said it was very very good. Had a nice amount of spice. My chicken carbonara was absolutely amazing. Made me love this place. We got the bills and they weren't bad and we had enough leftovers for two more meals each I splurged and got their homemade creamy Parmesan salad dressing that they sell by the half pint and it was very portable. This was my first time here and won't be my last! Came for a work lunch and ordered a Caesar salad with salmon (cooked rare) and the soup of the day was a hashbrown soup so I HAD to get that! The salmon for my salad was cooked as requested- so definitely had to give them props for that because many places end up overcooking it and that's a big "no" for me. The salad overall was just okay, I thought the dressing was a little salty and my lettuce was a little soft but that's all subjective. The soup was awesomeeee. Cheesy potato-y goodness in a small cup that leaves you feeling comforted. A great place to check out if you're in the area!
