The zesty, fresh, authentic menu of Urban Cellar Bar & Grill on S. 50th in WDM is a tasty food haven. The Clam Chowder, Grilled Chicken Breast with all the fresh trimmings and the yummy Key Lime Pie made -- in their very own kitchen -- served up by the most knowledgeable wait staff- Brody -- with a helpful smile adding trivia about the Urban Cellar's Menu -- as well as Offering Great Service! The high booths, and serene upscale furnishings made for a pleasant atmosphere that ushered in plenty of privacy for you to think and enjoy your meal.

Our party of 9 had nothing negative to say about Urban Cellar. We were in town for a hockey tournament and had a break for lunch. Urban Cellar is conveniently close to the Rec Plex and was able to accommodate our party immediately. The restaurant is slightly more upscale than I anticipated which made me nervous for our all our kids but the host and waitress were on their A game and got us drinks, appetizers and food quickly. Our group had an assortment of meals across the menu - burgers, barbacoa tacos, pasta, pizza, salads and brunch. Everything was fantastic! We wish we had another break to come back here for a meal. Highly recommend!

After driving in circles and being turned away from less delicious places, we ended up at Urban Cellar. This place was WONDERFUL!!!!! Our group of 6 had a little of everything, so I assure you, this is not a review of one plate. I had a salmon dish that was delicious. Salmon on a bed of perfectly cooked asparagus topped with a tomato salsa and a dollop of parmesan creme. I tasted the shot rib which was a generous portion of melt in your mouth tender meat with steamed veggies. Another friend had sesame crusted seared Tuna, and others had Pizza and salads topped with chicken. This place was one of the best restaurants and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I will go back. When I am in DesMoines, it may be difficult to get me to go anywhere else!!

Today was lunch for us. It was the bosses treat. Tabletop of 7 got in right at 11. We got seated and helped for drinks right away. We reviewed the menu and reviewed the chefs special. There were lots of yummy things to choose from. I am a little late posting this so the menu I am posting in my photos is from March 2024. The ambiance was very nice as we were there for a work lunch. It was right after opening and the place did not take long to fill up. They have both booth and table seating. There are multiple TVs hanging from the walls. We had a table top of 7 so the food did take a little to come out. My coworkers had the Salmon Salad before and raved about it. I confirmed that the Salmon was not going to be cold and ordered from the special menu the Blue Berry Salmon Salad. This was fantastic and hit the spot. It was Salmon with honey crisp apples, goad cheese and candied pecans. I think the Blue berries were dehydrated cause they were tiny and it was with a sherry vinaigrette dressing. 100% recommend. Sorry If this is not on the menu anymore, but it was delicious. My boss really enjoyed the place so I can say we will be back and I will have to try another version of the same salad cause now I will be raving about it.

4.5* (out of 5) Food: 5* Atmosphere: 5* Value: 4* Service: 4* 03/28/2023 Stopped by again last night with my wife to try out the Happy Hour again and had a good time. We shared orders of Mama's Meatballs (see picture) and a Margherita Pizza (see picture). We really enjoyed the meatballs - good flavor, not too greasy and with just the right amount of sauce and cheese. The crust on the margherita pizza was very soft if you like that and the flavor was good...we just prefer having some protein so will probably stick with the Meatballs or Salmon Cakes. The Tommy's Margarita (see picture) was not one of my favorites...coming across a bit tart and a bit of an artificially sweetened mouthfeel.

Yelp brought my wife and I to this restaurant. We were not disappointed. We went early on a Friday to take advantage of their Happy Hour specials. Domestic beers are way cheap. House wines are way cheap, and surprisingly good. My wife is a bit of a wine snob, and she found the house Pinot Grigio very good for the price. It was a happy surprise for her. We ate all apps. Tried the calamari and Margherita pizza. The calamari was outstanding. The pizza was fine, nothing real special in my opinion. We then finished it up with the crab Rangoon dip, which was basically a deconstructed crab Rangoon. Came with won ton chips. Really really good. And a lot of foot for the price. Didn't come close to eating it all. Service was outstanding. Happy hour deals are legit. The average age of patrons seems to be around 50, or at least it was the Friday night we went. Not an issue for us, just something we observed. This is a solid 4 stars. I'd have to go back and try some actual meals to further evaluate the food. It's a potential 5 star place, just need to check it out again. Glad we went.

    Monday special

Had pleasuring of dining few Mondays ago and took advantage of the Monday special, which includes two entrées with choice of soup/ salad, dessert and a bottle of wine. For an appetizer we started with a Ahi tuna tartare over pico de gallo. It was very good. For main course went with steak DeBurgo over garlic mashed. Second entree was chicken and roasted brussels sprouts. Finished the meal with a slice of Keylime pie. Had a fantastic experience with a very nice server. Everything was hot fresh and delivered in a timely manner. Would definitely return to this restaurant.

What a warm, inviting classy place (see my inside pics). The 4 of us went there for lunch and were able to have a very enjoyable lunch and conversation without being rushed or talked over by others. Our waiter was quick and attentive. We started with the Onion Strings, see my pic. There was ample for the 4 of us. As you can see in my pic, they were deep fried and very crispy. The strings of onions were just as named - battered thin lengths of mild onions. The side sauce is mayo based and thinly flavored (you may want to request an alternative). Their Classic Burger was on point. I ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly. While the bun was light and airy, it held together to the last bite. I'd add a bit more salt to enhance the flavoring. The side sweet potato fries was addictive. In the foreground was a side of dipping honey for the fries - this hit the mark for me. We also had the Salmon BLT. As you can see in my pic, the Salmon fills the whole sandwich. It was cooked just right and was still moist. The bacon added the right amount of saltiness and the garlic aioli added flavor. The Brussel sprouts were cooked well and the grilled, smoky flavor came through. As a heads up, we found the Cavatelli to have quite a bit of heat to it. We ordered and took out desserts home, so the pics terribly under represented how good they were. Even a long car ride home and many hours later we really enjoyed the Chocolate Cake and Crème Brule. We look forward to our next visit.

    Sangria

I have dined at this restaurant several times when on trips for business and this visit did not disappoint! I had the scallop dish which was beautifully put together. The whipped potatoes may be the best I've ever had...in my life. So, in full disclosure I'm trying to follow a low carb diet. The operative word here is "trying" as I literally could not resist these potatoes. SO damn good! I almost licked the plate, seriously! The dish was a little small in terms of portion size as I got 4 scallops for $26. However, with how high food prices are now, this is probably the right size dish at the right price. Now, for drinks, I took advantage of happy hour and got the house wine, Pinot Grigio, for only $4/glass. Yes, only $4! The wine was good although I have had many of the white wine offerings here and they are all good choices. The highlight for me was the sangria. It was a hot evening so this was my refreshing dessert. So good, so crisp and delicious! I love this place and highly recommend it. Food was great, drinks were great and service was great!

A nice restaurant with a clean look and a couple of TVs behind the bar playing the Army Navy game. Pics on Google were promising. They were correct. Pizza is wood fired, and you can easily watch the process from most of the restaurant. A nice vibe. Like many places today, they go out of the way to be obscure with their ingredients. I asked about the sausage pizza and which item was the cheese....the server was unsure and offered me the pepperoni pizza with mozzarella replacing pepperoni with sausage. Instead, I added sausage to the pepperoni. I prefer pizza with cheese...covering the whole pizza as opposed to a small section. With the cheese thing out, I will say the crust and ingredients were fantastic. We ordered one half pizza/half salad and a whole small pizza. I didn't picture how they'd do a half pizza with an empty restaurant, but it was just a smaller crust. (Makes sense.) Beer selection was limited, but still good. Service was kind and attentive. This was a pretty good pizza joint with a try.

Lol I took at look at their menu online and it's not a big menu... Build your own 7-Stone crust (thick) and artisan crust (thin) along with six different specialty pizzas. Big into appetizers? Don't plan on it here. They have cheesebread and side salads. They offer a couple different items for lunch specials (Wednesday - Friday 11am to 2pm)...toasted hoagies and a half pizza combo. It's order and pay at the counter. Pepsi self serve fountain drinks. Plates, utensils, napkins, and pizza spatulas are beside the fountain drink station. Parmesan and red pepper are on the tables. Seat yourself. The seating is a combination of booths and low top tables and chairs. There's a small counter with seating as well. The business itself is in a strip so there is lots of parking available. There was one gal behind the counter taking orders as well as cooking and serving pizzas. Two younger ladies came in a bit later, but it was hard to tell if they were actual staff or daughters there to hang out with their mom (or maybe both). Staff was friendly enough. Our party ordered: 1x large House7 on 7-Stone crust 1x large buffalo chicken on artisan crust 2x small pepperoni pizzas on artisan crust 1x large cheesebread 1x side salad 7x fountain drinks It was a short wait for everything to get cooked and served. The thicker 7 Stone crust takes about 20 min. The artisan...probably half that. The 7 Stone crust vaguely reminds me of when Pizza Hut still cooked in cast iron. The toasted crust with cheese burnt like little vertical stalagmite (that's the cave formations that form from the floor up)... That was something neat to see. I haven't had a crust like that in a long time. The artisan crust is thinner of course, but perfect for folding. You like a little char? This gives you that in some bubbling aound the edges, but the bottom of the pizza crust is not burnt. I really enjoyed the buffalo chicken pizza! I'm not sure what it was but for me there was something off about the red sauce... It wasn't "bad" but just tasted off. At first I thought it might be a residual taste from the black olives from the House7, but the red sauce on the pepperoni pizzas had the same taste. Maybe it was the plum tomatos they use v. roma or another more traditional variety? Bang for the buck... To me it seemed a little pricey. $22 for a small cheese pizza on 7-Stone. $20 for a small cheese on artisan. $33 for a large specialty on 7-Stone. $31 for a large speciality pizza on artisan. But that might just be me... The company was buying for the two of us today so... The cost is sort of irrelevant outside of mentioning the noted pricing in general. When the company is buying I really don't care. But I'm kind of glad they were paying for it... Lol But no one walked away hungry that's for sure...! And the leftovers I took home will get eaten as long as it warms up anywhere near the same (follow up edit: it did). This is a tough one for me... It's kind of like Gusto. I had a ton of friends who loved the place. I just never cared for it. And there was no particular reason... Is this some place I would return to? Maybe if invited again... But while it's not exactly my favorite... You might love it! Definitely worth checking out! https://www.7stonepizzeria.com/
