Cloran mansión My…read morehusband and I were celebrating our 10th anniversary and so we decided to stay at the Cloran Mansion for a few days. We booked the massage and dinner package as well as renewed our vows in front of the mansion. I cannot say enough about the amazing experience we had during our time here. Paul was an amazing host! He puts in a lot of details into making the experience one to remember. We have never stayed at a bed-and-breakfast so we were completely surprised by how wonderful and elegant the mansion was. On Thursday when we arrived, we had our scheduled massage, followed by our ceremony, and a private dinner in the dining room. Paul even took some pictures of us and gifted us with a beautiful framed picture of me and my husband. On Friday morning, we met some wonderful guest during our breakfast, and headed out to downtown Galena. Our breakfast was an excellent and tasty homemade breakfast, so much so, that we were so excited about breakfast the next day. Although Paul is basically the face of a mansion, his wife and employee work just as hard to make it an overall beautiful experience. We will definitely be back! We know that we have other options, but we cannot say enough about this place and want to continue to support Paul like he supports and tends to his customers. Deciding to do a last minute trip to Galena, my boyfriend discovered Abbey's. considering we were…read morebooking the room say day, they were very nice. we arrived around 10:30 pm, and were greeted promptly by kat. she showed us around and then took us to our room. told us breakfast was at 9, and showed us how to get back in when we would leave. we were then introduced to her husband, and we set off into the night for some fun. the room itself was nice in a quaint way. there was a jacuzzi tub in the corner, a 4 post bed, fireplace, desk, and tv. the bathroom was a bit small, and the water-pressure a bit lacking, but it was cute place. probably the biggest downside for us was how loud the bed was! you would sit down and it would creak like it was going to break. i was definitely woken up a few times by my boyfriend rolling over in the middle of the night. breakfast itself was good. there were a few things we didn't care for on the menu, but nothing to complain about overall. the barely saw the owners, which works well for me. i don't want to feel like i'm at my parents house and be checked in on all the time. nice place to stay. i would recommend coming here if you stay in galena. the gardens here a gorgeous and the view is wonderful.

I chose Brierwreath because we were looking for a room that could accommodate three in a room. The Heirloom Suite has a queen bed and a day bed so that fit the bill. The decor is so charming in the house. It's like stepping into an antique shop. Joe, the owner, was extremely nice. He gave us a little history of the house and was kind enough to give us recommendations of where to dine in Galena. The breakfast he served was so yummy! I definitely was a member of the Clean Plate Club. The 24 hour refreshment hutch and fridge on the guest floor is great. And the fresh cookies were a treat! The location is only a short walk to Main Street, which is another plus. Will definitely be back on our next trip to Galena!

I was pleased that each room had a separate sitting room and it's own bathroom/ shower. We went in the fall/summer so we didn't get a chance to enjoy the bedroom fireplace but it looked so nice! The owner (who took it over in April from his parents) was very friendly and helpful- not overbearing at all! Breakfast was good- we were able to pick between a couple options when he asked us upon checkin. Coffee was good & several juices on the table. On the bedroom level here was a mini fridge, coffee machine, and water machine for use. Also the bedrooms are more separate and since there are only 3guest rooms it was a nice private feel. The only two negatives that I found was I wished they had a surge protector next to the bed because I had to unplug the clock/radio since I prefer to keep my cell phone on the nightstand charging while I sleep (my husband had an extra outlet on his side to use); the other part is they put a lot of effort decorating... There was lots of vases and stuffed teddy bears on the ground which upon leaving I could not simply scan the floor that nothing was left. However the Best part of this place was the location! Excellent perfect location! We were able to walk to everything! When we drove to Iowa (15mins away) we passed a lot of b&b that were not so close which made us really appreciate this place!! And the price was reasonable!

Breakfast was great, as were the home baked treats that could be found throughout the day. The bad: there was only wine and soda in the fridge. No ice and no water. The common areas were cluttered. I don't care to stay someplace and see piles of junk on the floor. I stepped into the kitchen at one point to look for some ice for my tea and the cleanliness of the kitchen was very questionable. Food had been left out of the fridge on the counter, and it was the middle of the day. Against my better judgement I DID have breakfast the next day and I haven't gotten sick, so there IS that! The ugly: I am very sensitive to smells and there was a heavy presence of cat urine. I just couldn't escape it. i never saw a cat, but I sure did smell it! The curtains in our room were falling apart and they were all water stained. I could look past all of that, but when I discovered what the pillows looked like I was done and we left a day early. The pillows were not encased in a protective cover before they were placed in a pillowcase and they were all stained and disgusting, one even had a hole in it. Even that didn't phase me too much, but when I helped myself to a pillow case that I found in the hall closet it looked like there was a booger on it and I just lost it. We were not given any kind of hassle when we checked out early and it would be my guess that we were not the first. As others have mentioned the outside looked like something out of a horror movie, but I obviously wasn't put off by it as we did check in. According to past reviews the renovation of the front porch has been going on for YEARS, and it looks pretty trashy. If you don't mind all that I mentioned, by all means stay, but I will not stay again. If you can get past the cat smell and the disgusting pillows and the dirty kitchen, it IS a beautiful B&B. I need to note that it took me a long time to write this review. It really IS beautiful, and the owners really are lovely people, but I just couldn't not say something. Had everyone else that has written reviews been totally honest, I probably would not have stayed there. This place could be SO much better with a little more care.

Lovely ambiance of jazz always playing seems comforting in so many ways. The hostess ate breakfast with me and helped me with photos, directions, advise. She was sincerely lovely. They went out of their way to help me in my travels. Epic hosts, food, complimentary drinks. I have never been to a place this unique. Usually you worry about small things at hotels bc they are so sterile. Here its like staying at your grandparents house or favorite aunt and uncles. I suggest this location to people who love the wholesome things in life without the upper scale crust lingering on your permanent white pillowcases. You don't need to worry about that here. (I would not suggest this to people with serious allergies or extreme standards.) Everything felt comfortable and relaxing. I love it! And I will continue to come back. Best bed and breakfast! Just epic! Perfectly cooked, the best crapes I have ever had. This peach layered cake they made... I can't stop thinking about! You gotta check it out!
