Yelp has done them a disservice!!! They wont take down pics they no longer SERVE!?? I went for items they dont make anymore bc of the pics . BE CLEAR! They ONLY have waffles now. We were excited to try the new waffle concept, but I am not sure we will go back. The waffles were fine but without any sides available to order (please bring back bacon, fruit, sausage, etc!), it didn't seem to make sense to not just make waffles at home. Everyone there was very nice and we loved the older version of this place, but this new concept just didn't make spending money out to eat worth it. First off, the foods alright. Nothing to really write home about. Their home brown potatoes are literally just cooked potatoes. ZERO seasoning. Also, look at my avocado in my omelette. There's a reason they buried it under the omelette. I wish businesses would just be honest. They could have just said hey our avocados suck today, get something else. This is a quaint little restaurant, it doesn't have much seating but it's worth waiting for. I ordered the lickity split and the hubs got the garbage grinder. Both came out Hot and fresh. They have an open kitchen so you can watch them prep and cook which is really neat. The decor is perfect for the interior they have empty frames on the wall that they fill with pictures drawn by customers, would love to stop back in again when I'm in the neighborhood. read more

Pricy for what we ordered, I think. The food was good. The pumpkin pancakes are delicious, not too sweet and fluffy and flavorful. The iced tea was especially good, it's hard to find good iced tea in Oregon so yay for that. The restaurant is cozy and rustic. Their jam appeared to be homemade and very tasty. I'm not sure I understand all the reviews here. People are complaining about being rushed at a small, family owned diner. Their business depends on people being moved in and out. When a small diner is popular - that's what happens. I digress. Fat Alberts works because it has a small-town diner feel in the middle of Southeast. People aren't pretentious, decorations are children's drawings, you'll always recognize the same servers, and the sole object is to get you seated, fed, and out. Don't come here expecting gourmet food - it's very homestyle. The menu selection is limited - but the selection that does exist will suit the needs of all patrons. The food is why I love this joint. It's fresh, local, tastes fantastic. If you order an omelette with avocado - you get almost an entire avocado. If you order biscuits with gravy, they don't hesitate to pile the gravy in absurd quantity. You can get ingredients on the side, customize, etc. If you order biscuits and gravy, and want MORE gravy, just ask for it. The service - feels like you're in mom's kitchen and you had better get out of the way or be run over! The staff is busy and frantic, but your coffee will never be left empty and your food will come fast. The one dish I always order is the Kim's Fave. 3 egg omelette, tons of avocado, fresh bacon, cheddar cheese, and I always get the fresh salsa and sour cream on top (it actually comes on the side and you can dish it to your own desires). Always get the homestyle potatoes. The hashbrowns are good - but the homestyle is better. The homemade biscuits are huge, fluffy, and have just the right amount of crumble. Schmear some of that fresh Oregon jam on them, mmmmmm. DO NOT GET THE TOAST. ONLY GET THE BISCUIT. Trust me on this one. :-) I've had some of the best pancakes of my life here. They were ENORMOUS and fluffy and perfect. Fresh 100% maple syrup and butter to top - I'm making myself hungry. The coffee is refilled very often and tastes decent enough. No Stumptown, but not bad at all. The bacon in the omelettes is great, bacon on the side is decent - if you like it crispy (I do). I've seen my buddy order the oatmeal, it looked good. The wait is typical for a small diner that's packed. There's one community table, about 5-6 side tables, and the bar. I haven't tried the specials, though they never seem to change. The only downside is that this place doesn't take cards - cash or check only. Though a Bank of America, Wellsfargo, and a few others are in a 1 block walk. read more

Each time I eat here it feels like it's getting a little bit worse. Their food always taste a little off somehow. I always get it to go so can't comment on their atmosphere or service. Biscuits and gravy is prob the best thing I had here, but prob my least favorite out of all the places I've had them. Their French Toast I had today was.. eggy. Smelt amazing! But tasted more like egg than anything else, and didn't have much of any other taste to it. It left a bad after taste and it if wasn't for the strong, sweet, sticky syrup - there is no way I would have eaten it. Wow! I literally walked the 2 car lengths from my parking spot to the door just as soon as they lit the OPEN sign and there were already three people sitting at the counter when I walked in. That ought to tell you something about the place. It reminds me of a comfortable old diner with the counter running down the center of the space, overlooking the open kitchen. The tables and chairs are a mismatched combination of very serviceable relics. Best of all, regular sugar dispensers, those little silver creamer pitchers and jars of jam on each table. I don't need no stinkin' individual packets of sugar, creamer, and jam! I went with the Garbage Grinder omelet and was not disappointed. 3 eggs filled with sausage, ham, bacon, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and two kinds of cheese. Just to push it over the top, it is smothered in country gravy. Believe me, this was enough for two people. Instead, the half I didn't eat will be lunch later today. I would have given 4 stars but for the weak coffee and very blonde potatoes. Not sure which 'local coffee roaster' they buy from, but I'm guessing they aren't adding enough grounds to brew a good cuppa. And the potatoes might have been the case of Georgie trying to get the food out fast. I could have used just a tad more browning on mine though and would gladly have waited a few more minutes. If that's the worst thing I ever experience with a breakfast joint, I'll still leave with a smile on my face. read more

I have wanted to come in here for so long. I also applaud the cash only. I love places that put the bankster in their spot. The bread was stellar. but your not getting a five or four star for several reasons. I sat outside / cause the place was full. I can't sit at the bar cause of a leg injury, so outside I went. I wasn't greeted with water / dunno if this is policy, but I run a restaurant with outdoor seating, and on a 100 degree day? we bring water. I got a cup of coffee... then asked for water and orange juice, which came, but nary an offer to refill water or coffee. and I'm thirsty / and no busser to be found. no utensils either. I ordered the chicken fried steak. That looked so good, and was so bland. season the meat people, and season your gravy. I ate my eggs, some potatoes, and half the chicken steak after I looked hard for something to flavor it with. I settled for tabasco. btw, food delivered with only a knife. epic fail. there are ways to get around this / it would help if there was a sign that said come serve yourself if you need these things. then the bee's came. some small talk by the waitress which I wasn't sure if I was being scolded, or laughed at. either way, I left my food at the table, sat in the chair, and waited for her to bring me the ticket. much to learn here people. help an outside patron out would ya? However, as an eggs beni connoisseur I thought their hollandaise was one of the best I've had. Not to lemony with enough cayenne to give it a little bit of spice. All the staff are super friendly, the cook is on point and when I go in which is early , say 7a, I have food within 5 minutes. They have great french toast , great breakfast burritos, the best biscuits and gravy. I thought this place was ok for breakfast, but it annoys me they don't take credit cards still. Argh. The parking is difficult, and as others have said, it's a tad expensive. It's pretty small, it has a funky vibe, and it definitely has regulars. One time we were here there was an older gentleman playing harmonica at the counter, which started out kind of cool but went on too long and was too loud for a small place. The other people there didn't seem to mind it. We didn't go back for while. It bugged us that we couldn't hear ourselves talk. The last time we were in, we shared an omelet and kiddo had scrambled eggs and toast. Everything tasted pretty good, but it wasn't special. It was adequate, maybe a bit more than that. My mom and I have been going here for years. We live about 5 minutes away via car. Going to Fat Albert's is always a treat. The food is fantastic, and the staff are friendly. We've gone so many times that one of the staff members always remembers my order even though we don't come in on a regular basis. I have yet to come across a meal I don't like. We like taking our friends here for breakfast. It is located right in the heart of West Moreland (West Moreland is right next to Sellwood). My only complaint is that Fat Albert's location is pretty small. On busy mornings you have to wait a bit since there's only a few tables and a few seats at the counter. There's a relatively large communal table at the front of the restaurant. The small size of the restaurant/cafe is why I'm giving Fat Albert's 4 stars instead of 5 stars. read more

Been to FA about six times over the years and each experience is the same. An interesting menu, fresh food, Bohemian decorative style, and located in a nice area surrounded by charming houses and shops. The downside to the positives; small/cramped, long wait, pricing could be slightly better, but more importantly, vanilla/don`t really care service. The service is the big downfall of this restaurant; it`s very reminiscent of a truck stop diner, only with a NW dress code. In their defense there was one time I ordered an omelette they screwed up and the manager took care of it right away; but on the other side of the coin you could tip them $20.00 and they`d still shrug their shoulders as if you`d given them a nickel; and that bothers me. If you`re not bothered by that kind of attitude, then welcome to Fat Alberts` and I`m sure you`ll enjoy the food/experience; but if you prefer to be treated like a human being and not what feels like a piece of crap for coming there, then avoid and find another place to spend your money and graciousness on. 3 out of 5 for the positives. Don't go to Fat Albert's expecting to be coddled, this is a plain and simple diner with the same staff for at least the last 4 years I've been a customer. Here's how the process works: Go in. (Expect to wait if it's a weekend.) Order. (Kim's Fave Omlette with sour cream and salsa is my "standard.") Eat. Pay with cash. And then go. The sign clearly states "No camping." I have no problem waiting for good food and good service, however the morning that I went the food was mediocre and the service was CRAP. We felt like an imposition just being there. You're busy. Fine. Great, whatever. But don't huff and puff when you HAVE to come take my order. I mean, that IS what you do, right? By the end of the experience, she had warmed up slightly. Almost enough for me to feel bad about my previous frustration.... but not quite. My suggestion, go on a weekday morning if it's close-by and convenient. Service: Don't expect it. Of the 15 times or more I have been, I have had three good experiences with service. If you are not a regular then don't expect it - if you do, then you'll be disappointed. Food: Decent no frills breafast faire. Greasy? Yes. Simple? Yes. Coffee is good and they are proficient at keeping the mugs filled. Kid Friendly: Yes and no. Because the joint is so small, you have to go in when there are a lot of folks, hopefully some will have children with them too. I have been in there with my kids during the week and boy oh boy did I feel like I was a demonic monster. People were put off by my kids being just what they are... KIDS.
