JoLa has become one of my favorite places to spend time in. The Mahsa Chai is hands down my favorite drink anywhere, and the chicken pesto sandwich is one of those menu items I find myself craving throughout the week. Over the past weeks, I've actually found the atmosphere to be warmer, and more welcoming, and full of positive energy. Like any small business, transitions happen, but what matters to me is the experience I have every time I walk through the door. I've consistently been greeted with kindness, great coffee, and people who genuinely seem to care about creating a place where customers want to stay awhile. One of the things I love most about JoLa is that it feels like a true neighborhood café. Local artists are featured on the walls, it's a wonderful place to settle in and work for a few hours, and there's a real sense of community that you don't find in many coffee shops anymore. More than anything, it's obvious that the owner and management care deeply about the customer experience. They put a tremendous amount of heart into this place, and it shows in the details... from the quality of the food and drinks to the welcoming atmosphere they've created. I'll happily keep coming back, and I'd encourage anyone who's considering visiting to experience JoLa for themselves. read more

As a daily regular at JoLa for over a decade, I'm incredibly saddened by the recent changes here. What used to keep me coming back every single morning was the outstanding staff consistency and the warm, community-driven service. Lately, the energy has shifted. There has been a rapid turnover of the team, and without any of the familiar, long-term staff members who built those customer relationships, the welcoming environment is gone. While the current staff tries their best, the overall customer experience has suffered. After 10 years of loyal daily visits, the lack of consistency has finally pushed me to find a new daily cafe. ****My previous detailed review was taken down. Wow really loved this spot in John's Landing. I'm never in the area so was surprised to see a place that had such a large indoor area but with plenty of picnic tables outside. I went with a friend and seems like they recently expanded the place. We ordered the corned beef hash and matcha waffles to share. Can't have brunch without some drinks and I enjoyed the chai and vanilla lattes here. Surprisingly the food came out pretty quickly and it was so easy to dig in! I enjoyed the corned beef hash because the potatoes had a nice crunch, some spice with the bell peppers, and thick chunks of meat. The matcha waffles were a nice sweet option to get as they put all the sides of whipped cream, butter, jam, and syrup. They were just slightly dry though so I probably wouldn't get them again. Overall, the food menu has a nice mix of sweet and savory. However, if you don't want a full entree be sure to check out their pastry case or specials board! read more

This place is in such a cute location -- right next to the beautiful Willamette Park. I came in and ordered their chai because it was recommended to me, but honestly, it was super disappointing. It wasn't even good enough to be called chai. It tasted like watered-down milk with barely any spice or flavor -- definitely not the bold, authentic chai I'm used to. It seemed like it came from a concentrate that was too diluted, and then they just added a splash of milk. I really don't even know if it qualifies as chai. That said, I did have the brownie, and it was rich, fudgy, and delicious -- definitely the highlight of my visit. Love this neighborhood cafe slash bistro in a historic building based in Johns Landing. Cozy, upscale and friendly... and I like that the space seems to transform over the course of the day. Coffee is excellent; they use one of the best local roasters in Portland. Pastries are scrumptious! And the menu is deep enough to offer options without making you feel overwhelmed. Random note of appreciation: the bathroom doesn't have a code. That is a rarity in Portland these days. The WiFi can be spotty at times... that's my only feedback for improvement. The outdoor area is lovely in the summer! Too bad it's overcast in Portland over half of the year I like that the management keeps tinkering with the hours to make it optimal for the customer base. I study here on weekends and this place is very popular- they have a ton of seating but there has been a time or two I had to wait for someone to leave for a seat. They serve full on breakfast on one side and smaller quick portions on the cafe side. Wait staff are great on the cafe side! One of the best cafes I've been to in terms of quality and variety of foods and drinks! This place is in a peaceful neighborhood of John's Landing. From the outside it may seem like a small spot but I was surprised how much seating there was inside with multiple floors! The vibe inside is very cozy and spacious. I opted to dine in so they called out your name once your drink was ready and then brought the food out to you wherever you're sitting afterwards. The cappuccino was made quickly and it was delicious! I also got the Belmont burrito which had egg, potatoes, avocado, black beans, arugula, and cheese. It was super tasty and filling! Enjoyed a good dose of Portlandian spring air this morning at JoLa Café. Selected "The Country" burrito but had it as a bowl instead of a wrap. Very good and I will probably steal their cool idea of green chili sour cream! The salsa was also homemade with flecks of fresh cilantro and onion, it was very delicious. To wash this down I had an iced mocha which was equally primo, and I wish I would've requested a larger size. My brunch partner liked the sausage egg croissant sandwich and commented that the tomato jam made it taste unique. I noted a lot of adult bevs on the menu including mimosas, Irish coffee, hot toddy, and bloody Mary's. This is a neighborhood gem in Corbett, I loved how it was off Macadam just enough so as not to hear the traffic. It's quiet and peaceful outside the cafe. My go-to coffee spot is also a legitimately solid lunch destination, with a good selection of fresh, generously-portioned bowls, salads, sandos and burritos to go along with your Americano or latte. The space is choppy - three separate rooms actually - but it's still a quite airy and spacious space with good light and a chill vibe if you just wanna come work on your laptop. There's usually local art on the walls, various magazines to read, and a couple of outside tables if you're so inclined. They have smoothies and pastries too and the service is always prompt - and with a smile. I feel like it's a great community gathering spot too, with a really down-to-earth atmosphere. Happy that this friendly, delish and well-run cafe is in the neighborhood, and major props for maintaining the vibe of the historic building it's in. read more

It is another dark and rainy day in Portland! This little cafe is so sweet. I was in the area and wanted a little treat. I had a good feeling before I walked in. It's very cozy and inviting. I got a breakfast sandwich. Egg, cheddar, avocado, on gluten-free bread. Every breakfast sandwich comes with their homemade tomato jam. It was fabulous! My fiancé got egg, cheddar, bacon, on a croissant. I also got the macaroon from the pastry counter. This cafe is excellentttttt wow. Went to lunch here and it was the perfect spot! Great outdoor seating, spacious interiors for studying, working eating, etc and overall a relaxing experience. I've been here quite a few times. Today for Sunday Brunch I had my fav so far. Corned Beef hash that was like perfectly designed for me! Fewer potatoes than most which was perfect and then on a bed of fresh arugula and lots of tasty corned beef with a lovely poached egg on top. I almost didn't order as thought it would be a typical potato mash up. But no, it was the best and semi-healthiest one Ive ever had. The service was super pleasant and food served quickly. We thought it would be perfect for a Sunday afternoon. Our coffee and pastries were pretty good but then the music, horrible. Rap music, trashy language, and they changed the song every 20 seconds. At 1st I thought they were changing it to be more suitable for a coffee shop but maybe it was the employee's personal preference. Too bad for us. Came here with a group of friends and so got to try a lot of items. The best way to explore a new restaurant, if you ask me! The mushroom and feta toast was insanely delicious! I would come back just for that. It was zippy, earthy, salty, crunchy, soft... it was everything. I was sad I wasn't the person who ordered it, so I only got one bite. Food envy for sure! But that's the only thing I'd come back for. The Belgian waffle was just a sad naked waffle with a side of syrup and a side of butter. Expected more of a presentation, to be quite honest. My friend was disappointed. My other friend got the house benedict and it was overly sweet. I'm not the person to ask about benes because I generally don't like them, but we all agreed it was too much on the sweet side for our tastes. Based on Yelp reviews I decided to try Jola for breakfast this morning and I have very mixed feelings about my experience but because of the food, I would not return to eat breakfast. Positives: This is a nice space in a quiet neighborhood and although it was very busy, ordering and receiving my order was fast and the staff very nice. The food is another story: I ordered the poached eggs Florentine and received a plate of two hard boiled eggs over soggy spinach and an underripe tomato on a barely toasted English muffin. The promised hollandaise was illiberally provided as a smear on the eggs and was barely flavored. The potatoes were lukewarm warm and so salty that I could feel hypertension coming on. The plating had all the elegance of Denny's without parsley. Suggestions: Poached eggs are hot and when cut the yellow running goodness of the yolk should ooze over the assembled stack of ingredients. Fresh spinach lightly steamed does not appear boiled and is not soggy but wilted. If fresh tomatoes, at the height of tomato season are not available (?) then don't use a tomato. Toast the muffin to a brown and crisp finish. A good portion of hollandaise is meant to bring the dish together not tint the top of the egg. Finally, potatoes should be left without seasoning so that I can determine salt and pepper to taste. I'll omit plating suggestions because if Jola focused on the food I would easily disregard the cafeteria presentation. read more

JoLa is a corner cafe just miles from the Willamette. We stopped in for brunch on the 4th of July so we were glad they were open for a couple hours on a holiday! It's a quant inside, no A/C inside so really warm in the summer but I get it. The way you order was interesting. Not sure if it was just because it was so slow but didn't have anyone walk up to our table and it was not clear where to order. You can to walk around a corner inside the get to the coffee bar/ordering area. I got a mocha which was the best part for me. Not sure what grounds they use but I was really impressed. For brunch I got the Southwest Burrito and it was alright. I was hoping for a little better quality, but nothing special to note. Overall glad I went there & again, very appreciative of the staff for being open on a holiday! read more

Since growing and adding much more food (taking over Corbett Fish House space) Jola is a fab place to not only have a cuppa joe n breakfast - its much bigger and you can have a table for hours. Expanded menu! Even better food (recommend if you have avacado toast sandie, NOT on biscuit - tho it looks purdy, better on croissant!). JoLa Cafe is located on the corner of the block in a somewhat / mostly residential area. Street parking was free and I believe they have their own parking lot too. Restaurant was very clean , well lit, and is bigger than it lets off to be. You order and pay at the counter when you first walk in, then take a numbered sign with you to your table so the staff knows where to drop off your food. Everything other than the food is self serve. Water, napkins, cutlery, and sauces are all on the counter for you to bring back to your table. You also bus your own table at the end of your visit. Despite all of this, the tablet still asks you to tip when you finish paying! Service was very friendly and helpful in explaining some of their drink options! Everybody working was very kind. I got a country burrito and it was pretty alright. It was smaller than what I thought I'd get for the price. It was packed with ingredients, so it definitely was filled. However the ingredients were all quite bland, I couldn't really taste the individual flavors of the eggs nor the bacon or green chile. Each bite tasted of potatoes and sour cream. Every two bites I had to shake on some salt and hot sauce to taste something. Maybe it was an off day, but still I enjoyed the ambiance and will definitely give the place another try read more

A sweet little bustling neighborhood place that is off the beaten path. Spacious and comfortable inside with plenty of tables outside for sunny seating. Seems to be a spot for small groups to meet and talk business or a coffee meeting. As a solo diner I was able to find a good spot for breakfast and do some work. Given it's neighborhood location parking can be tight. I love breakfast sandwiches but being relegated to the gluten free category that's not always possible to achieve. They had a stellar GF option and I embraced it with gusto and had a big ol' glorious, everything on it sandwich that was gratifying as hell. read more
