I always have to preface my BBQ reviews with a reminder that I grew up in a swath of BBQ nirvana between Texas and Kansas City so my standards may be unreasonably high. Fat Boy's is an order at the counter place. It has a large dining room and even some patio spots. It's no frills. We were greeted promptly and received a friendly overview of the menu and specific recommendations. Ordered the 2 meet combo with ribs and brisket. Both were moist and tender. Both lacked the smoke flavor that I expected. The BBQ sauce is rich with a bit of sweetness. Onion rings and okra were both fried perfectly and had good flavor. Even the tea is freshly brewed on the stove instead of in a machine. The portion size was decent for a combo. . I struggled with deciding between a 3 or 4. If I could give a 3.5, I would. This was the first time I tried Fat Boy's. There were only a few cars on a Friday night. When I entered I was warmly welcomed and told to look at the menu, order, pay, and they would bring my food to me, wherever I sat. I love brisket, so that's what I got. My sides were baked beans, which I had heard were great, and mac and cheese. I also got the blackberry fried pie, that the cashier suggested. Drinks here are self serve and be prepared to clean up after yourself, too. There's a large can to dump your trash across from the drink station. They have a nice big dining room as well as picnic benches on the front and back porches. If you choose the back porch, there's a nice view of the Autauga River. On the tables you will find napkins and condiments, including their bbq sauce. I really hate to say I was underwhelmed. The brisket, while moist and tender, was swimming in grease. I tried pulling the meat away and putting bbq sauce on it. It was edible but for $17.50 I would have liked to enjoy it more. The bbq sauce was just okay. It was made with pineapple juice which gave it a sweet taste but it wasn't great. The baked beans that I'd heard great things about were a paste consistency. Again, it was just alright. It was edible but I wouldn't get them again. They had a bit of a sour taste. The Mac and cheese was good and I did enjoy that. The plate is served with a slice of white bread. The star of the meal was the blackberry fried pie. It was flaky, sweet, and delicious. I really hate to say I doubt I'll be back because the staff here is so sweet. read more

This was my first time eating at Fat Boy's and it wasn't good. Brisket had no smoke flavor at all. I think it was leftover from the day before. Same with the ribs. We stopped at Fat Boy's on the way back from vacay in Florida! I searched on Yelp for a bbq restaurant near us. The reviews were great, so we gave it a try! It's off the beaten path & further away from 1-65. We passed several other restaurants en route to Fat Boy's! My family grumbled because we were passing a ton of restaurants. I was crossing my fingers that Fat Boy's would be good, as I needed to save face! Well......my family was apologizing once we received our food! Which, by the way, came out in record time. The staff is beyond friendly! Definitely, Southern hospitality was at play! The sweet tea tasted just like my momma's. I had ribs with potato salad & baked beans. The portions were huge! It was all SO good! Hubby had the Fat Boy Special. It was a sampling of all the meat they serve. It came with three sides. I tasted his fried okra. It was REALLY good!! I have ZERO complaints. My husband and I were just traveling thru, but needed dinner. Searching Yelp, we found this place. So glad we did... it's a real hometown, local place but the experience was wonderful. The Fat Boy BBQ Ranch really is like a ranch. They just need some cows and horses and dogs outside. There's a dirt parking lot in front of the building that is next to the "crick." The benches on the front porch are perfect for sipping iced tea and going to town on good BBQ. It all smells good. Head on inside to order at the counter before you get your drinks (all you can drink cups so don't order the gallon unless you're taking it to go). There's tables inside too but the air conditioning was cold. I would rather sit outside but I'm sure that's nice when it starts getting hotter. Ribs and pulled chicken were great. Some ribs fell off the bone and some didn't - must have been two different batches. Beans are the best I've ever had and I bought a bottle of BBQ sauce to take home. Coleslaw was different with cut up dill pickles in it, I liked it but it seemed a little more runny than I like it...pretty much the norm for this area though. Totally forgot to try the hush puppies. And if you order the peach cobbler (made with canned peaches) it's kinda small so don't expect to share. Ask them to throw it in the oven for a few more minutes (or 30) cause the crust was underdone. read more

Wow! So amazing! This was an authentic, delicious barbecue joint. The outdoor patio seating is great--it overlooks the river. I had the smoked sausage plate based on recommendation. Fantastic bbq here. My husband said theirs was one of the best pulled pork sandwiches he's eaten: generous on the meat, which was tender and juicy. Our daughter is a picky little eater most of the time, doing everything she can to avoid eating the food we put in front of her (including chugging her drink as fast as possible). We ordered the kid's rib plate, which she demolished like a beast. After her first bite, Miss Picky said, "The food is delicious!" She didn't put the ribs down until all the meat was gone, which is when we realized she hadn't touched her drink yet. High praise from her, indeed! I had the smoked sausage plate: they serve Conecuh, which is pretty damn hard to beat. Spicy/savory Conecuh dipped in Fat Boy's sweet and tangy bbq sauce was a pretty spot-on combination. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the sides: there's nothing negative to say about them, but they were just your average sides from a bbq joint. Not bad. Not great. Just nothing to write home about. The meat definitely stole the show. read more

First time visiting Fat Boy's and as a "fat boy" myself decided to order the Fat Boy Special, which included 3 sides and some of all their meats. First the good, the single rib that came was big, meat could easily be pulled off the bone and it was very tasty. The sliced beef had a good flavor. The sausage was conecuh like and the turkey was decent. The sides I got were GREAT (fried okra, onion rings, mac n cheese). Now the not so good. My BBQ chicken was bloody inside. The pulled pork was cold before it even got to my table. The turkey was super cold and dry like it was straight outta the fridge. The sliced beef, although flavorful, was leather saddle tough. I honestly could only separate about a third of the meat from the fat. The sausage, almost impossible to mess up, had a bit of a propane flavor. The sweet tea was okay (not great, not bad). I gave it 3 stars because the building is cool and I now know what to eat and what not to eat here. Spending $29 for a big meal and drink is well worth it, if the food is great. This meal was worth about $15, if this is normal quality. I literally left over half the meat on my plate and not because I'm full. read more

The baked beans can not be passed up - they are delicious with chunks of meat mixed in with the beans. Fries had great crunch on outside and soft inside! Mac cheese was a little disappointing as it tasted bland. Banana pudding was ok - not great. The peach cobbler was very good! Ribs were "fall off the bone" good - I had smoked turkey/pulled pork plate that was excellent. Disappointed that strawberry pudding was out of season - locals tell me it is great. Reviews were right about coming early for ribs. We ate at 5:00 on a Saturday - people were picking up slabs & they were almost out.
