Food halls like these are typically overpriced, but this quality and unique flavor was more than worth it. We tried multiple things to take for later, since we're not in the area often. Appreciate twists on classics you don't see at all shops, such as jerk tamarind mushrooms which were slightly sweet. Mac and cheese was classic Caribbean style and not too heavily seasoned in case you avoid that variety. The shrimp burger was good, it was slightly chewy but had the seemingly necessary balance of avoiding overcooking while still keeping the patty together. Flew in to NYC for a weekend of eating and had this place on my hit list specifically for the oxtail grilled cheese. Saw it on IG and all the glowing reviews on Yelp about the food so I thought let's give it a shot. The first indication that I should have walked away was that they were 15 mins late in opening. I was the first in line and there wasn't any real communication about how much longer it will be so I waited patiently. They finally asked me to step up and place my order. So I order the oxtail grilled cheese. Then they said it would take 45 mins. I'm like ok, I came all this way so I decided to wait. Paid for my order and told them I would be around the corner and they said they would call me when ready. Ok fine. I check in at 40 mins and one of the guys tells me I know we told you that it would be 40 mins but the oxtail is no where near done. I ask how long it would be and he couldn't tell me a time. I'm fuming inside but I don't show it. I ask for refund. Guy tried to pitch the chicken and I said no. He even offered to bring me an oxtail grilled cheese the next day and I declined cause I have other things to eat the next day. So on my visit to NY. I stopped by FAT FOWL for lunch. The market was easy to access. The food we ordered was solid the grilled cheese was fire. The jerk chicken was cooked to perfection and the plantains were amazing. In regard to the sweet potatoes there is room for improvement. I won't say it was that bad. I suggest they fry or bake the potatoes even more. It will definitely taste much better crispier in my opinion and lightly add the honey sauce. Mac & cheese is so good that I ate that and shared the chicken(and I don't share chicken) fried black black rice, I expected something like diri djon djon tossed in a wok - this rice is PHENOMENAL, perfect balance of sweet and salt, lavender rotisserie chicken was great as well. Saw the owner of Fat Fowl on the Sherri Shepherd Show; so I decided to take a trip to downtown Brooklyn to DeKalb Market Hall to check it out. When I walked off the escalator, it gave me vibes of a small scale version of Reading Terminal Markets in Philadelphia. I was lucky enough to locate the business with only one turn. Thank goodness, I didn't have to walk all around to locate it. The place opened at 11 and I arrived at 12 noon. There was no line, but closer to 1pm, the line was getting long. The wait staff was very pleasant. The women who was taking orders was nice. I ordered the oxtail grilled cheese with a side of fries. That bread for the grilled cheese was delightfully crispy and buttery. The oxtail was tender and flavorful. I didn't even need any ketchup for my fries. I also ordered the curry shrimp burger. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and not rubbery. The arugula was a hit on that sandwich along with the pickled red onions with lavender honey sauce. I also took some to-go platters. I ordered the Fat Foul Four lavender rotisserie chicken with my choice of four (4) sides. I opted for the sage maple sweet potatoes. They were delicious. I also added the creamy Mac and cheese, garlic string beans, and caramelized carrots. All were really delicious. My second to-go platter was the Quarter chicken with the black fried rice and sweet potatoes. I have never had black fried rice, but I am glad I decided to try it.
