This place is everything I want in a diner and more. Comfy booths with stained glass beer chandeliers, friendly servers and patrons, reasonably priced yet delicious food, and cheap beer. My wife and I were driving back to Orlando from Tampa and decided to stop in Lakeland for food. Being that it was a Sunday, our idea of eating in downtown Lakeland was stopped short by an hour-long wait for a table at a different popular restaurant. I'm glad it was - or we never would've discovered this gem. I had The Original Sloppy Jack ($8.19) - an open faced roast beef sandwich topped with brown gravy and coleslaw. I was in meat heaven. It was so good. I think about this sandwich daily ever since. You can tell a place has a cult following because multiple people sitting near us were telling us how good the food is and what to order. The prices here are fantastic, service just as much and the food we ordered was very good. This hole-in-the-wall diner has been around for 50 years and I can see why! I am thinking they have quite the regular customers and I do believe we would be too, if we lived closer. I ordered a pastrami sandwich with the works and fries. The sandwich was fairly loaded with pastrami and the lettuce and onions were crispy, with a soft bun roll (you can order it toasted if desired). The fries were hot and crispy, and tasted good. The others in our party enjoyed their selections too. I do believe the tables and chairs are the originals from the 60s, when they made furniture (and what have not) that actually lasted a lifetime! Everything about this diner reminded me of my youth. They have daily specials we may make a trip for and try. So, we've been to Fat Jacks before and the food is good, nothing spectacular. But this morning, we were never acknowledged even after standing there at least 15 minutes. The waiter was quite accommodating to the couple in front of us and made his way around talking to other customers. Another couple walked in after us and we're offered a table rather quickly. My husband and I looked at each other, shrugged and we left. Went down to Reececliff and were acknowledged and seated right away. We will never again go back to Fat Jack's. I was in the Lakeland area with my family, for an appointment and was tasked to find a place to eat. Now, I love history and I love the roots of any town, so I start looking for businesses that have been around awhile, etc... enter Fat Jack's Deli. I would consider the place a dive, just kinda comfy atmosphere, but not really leaning towards a particular motif. The staff greet you like you are over their house for dinner, it's laid back, happy to see you, but very respectful. We chose a booth; again, no frills decor or furniture, but comfy, you feel as if you have room. Opening the menu gave me goosebumps, I mean it's just all the good stuff you would want from a deli/dive; I can't recall taking so long to order, I really wanted a little bit of everything. I decided to go with a bacon cheeseburger, I mean it's almost a requirement when you come to a place like this. They bring out your drink in a large to-go cup, which I really dig, because you don't have to request refills often, but they will certainly top you off if you want and they make sure you are topped off for the road, if you'd like to take your drink non-alcoholic drink with you; which is something so simple, yet makes these places what they are. So the burger comes out (I got fries as well) and it doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look... idk, special; but I'm super hungry, so I dive on in (sorry, no time for picture) and I reminded of the classic idiom "Never judge a book by its cover", because this burger is delicious! Again, it looks perfectly fine, but also so very simple, but for its humble appearance, it certainly packs tons of flavor. Simple meat, simple cheese, simple bacon, but executed to perfection. The fries were fries, better than most, but nothing out of this world, but the star was the burger, hands down. The other members of my party also found their dishes to be excellent. Fat Jack's Deli & Pub has most certainly been added to our list of "go-to" spots in the area. Great to have met you Fat Jack's and cannot wait to stop in again. I have been wanting to get a very good pastrami, swiss on rye. So I heard about this place. We came by got the sandwich for my breakfast. I wasn't disappointed. It was a great sandwich. The grits were just under done. Egg was perfectly cooked. The apple juice was great, not watered down perfect. Fast friendly service. Oh yes the gravy was good a bit spicy the more you eat. This little unassuming cafe is just down the street from where we live tucked away in an older strip mall. We've had numerous people tell us it's a great place for breakfast, so we swung by there one morning and thankfully were able to grab a table just in time before the rush. Typical diner breakfast offerings, but the quality (& price) was outstanding. The coffee was superb, I had 3 cups before my husband had to tell me to quit. We both ordered the 3 egg omelettes, which came out quickly. I had the ham & cheese - you could specify which cheese you wanted, I had Swiss. Perfectly cooked, no liquid, thin sliced ham and nice Swiss and lots of it. Good bacon. The waitress had told me the hash browns were "like McD's" and I didn't care, it sounded good and they were. My husband saw the pastrami or corned beef omelette on the menu and asked if he could have both meats, with Swiss. Sure, just a little extra charge for the extra meat. So he almost had a Ruben omelette. He loved every bite. He had grits with his, and I had a taste. Good, thick and delicious. They serve lunch and have dinner specials every night but Sunday (they close then at 2 pm). We were told by the owner (who was serving coffee and bussing tables) that she and her husband were relatively new, but the place itself had been open for 50 years. Ok this is going to be long.....I live in Commie Minnesota and was down to do a Campus tour with our daughter at SEU. I wasn't keen on the idea of her coming here at all, mainly because I lived in Deerfield beach during Katrina and Wilma and that was enough for me to head back north to Minnesota. So while I was here I really wanted a good solid deli style Rueben, I googled that and Fat Jacks was the closest, so I headed out and was NOT disappointed, actually it was more than I was looking for. It made me see just how far Minnesota has moved from real life to this delusional garbage that is being bought and sold to us in the blue states. Yes I got all of that from ordering a sandwich at a deli. I saw almost everyone in either a Vet tshirt or hat or an American flag hat or shirt, I saw smiles and heard laughter, and people just having nice normal convo. No one looked stressed or tense or had blue, pink or purple hair and no one was dripping in piercings from their face. The Tiffany lamp shades brought me back to my childhood and same with the whole vibe in there. My server was sweet and kind to me even though I was 1 person in a 4 topped booth, (I'm a former server, so that kindness isn't lost on me) she was tipped well. So Fat Jack's thank for being an unlikely place for me to find answer to prayer. Thank you for the reminder of what normalcy looks like. Thank you for the best pastrami Reuben I've ever had. Our server offered up any type of bread and cheese I would have liked. Hubby had a French dip which was very different than the classic French dip. Instead of aujus it had brown beef gravy to dip. We had opened the door, trying to get in, but there was a line that was clogging up the entryway. We were immediately told to shut the door by a CUSTOMER who was relaying the message from the HOST(-ess). We can't tell you if the person was male or female because we didn't even step foot into the restaurant. What's wrong with this picture?? They didn't even have the courtesy to come talk to us to get our name or explain the situation. I've been going to this place for over 30 years. This is a New York style deli. Great sandwiches. My favorite is the corned beef combo with potato salad. The corned beef is sliced thin and piled high. It's topped with cole slaw and then Russian dressing. Tasty! read more
