Onion rings are a good start to the meal. I should have checked my Yelp review before I ordered as I could have tried another burger. It wasn't the usual crew I always see--just some younger kids. My wife and I went to Fat Willy's for our first time today. We both had the Thunderbird to eat. The Thunderbird is a large bun with a little piece of chicken (6 ounces?), Swiss cheese, onions and mushrooms with plenty of juice (grease?) running out. The sandwiches were virtually flavorless and come with no sauce or honey mustard to liven it up. For $11 each, we could not have been more disappointed in the portion sizes and quality of our meals. On top of the lack luster meal, it was definitely an experience eating at Fat Willy's for our first time. Apparently Tim Walz has not gotten through to everyone about the importance of wearing masks in the state. We sat at a table that leads to the bathroom. Needless to say, there were several unmaskers that walked right by our table when going to and from the bathroom. Come on people, have respect for those you are around. Rochester is the place where the highly susceptible come for medical care, not for the unanticipated Covid scare. read more

I love this place. I may be a bit bias because I'm a car guy and this is a car themed restaurant, but don't let that fool you into thinking that kitsch is they only thing they have going. The food is solid, and most important, it's consistent. I've been here half a dozen times and it's always the some quality and recipe. A quality that I think is crucial to a good restaurant experience. Not only is the food good, but the waitstaff is ALWAYS super friendly and attentive. You never sit with an empty glass or wait 20 min for your bill. Do yourself a favor, skip Applebee's or BWW and come here for an Ethanol wrap and a cup of Beer Cheese soup. read more

This place is so yummy! If you're in town for Mayo Clinic, as we were, this is only a few miles away, and it's outside of the traffic and hustle of the hospital, so it was a calm and welcome oasis with its free parking and wide open spaces! The restaurant has a gas station/car theme, with a big Sinclair sign on the wall and loads of memorabilia on the walls, tables, and ceiling. I had the "Brake Shoe" burger for dinner, which is, essentially, poutine meets horseshoe and absolutely delicious. The stuffed poppers for appetizers were good too. Solid bar food. Recently stayed at a hotel nearby for work. Fat Willy's was within walking distance so I took my co-workers there for dinner. Food was good, beer was great, and the customer service was excellent! I left my sunglasses on the table and realized it after I had already left town. I called to see if anyone had found and turned them in. Sure enough they did. I explained that I live out of town and asked if they could mail them to me. Without hesitation they agreed to, and as a bonus it was sent priority mail. Sometimes the place you want to have dinner turns out to be shenanigans, but not the restaurant. Having been somewhat of a regular in the past and attended a cancer fundraiser, that went quite well, at Fat Willy's for my friend who kicked Sarcoma, I wanted to share my recent experience - I had come in for dinner and asked for an exchange of pork within a chicken quesadilla(anyone who has worked in a kitchen knows this is just one portion instead of the other, super easy), I was politely told the kitchen would not accommodate so asked for something else, and then something else; ultimately no help was offered and changes to their menu won't be made(even for diets)... I wasn't able to find anything appealing as a result. This unfortunately became a bigger issue than necessary and the staff was somewhat rude and unaccountable about it. Our initial server and I are both frustrated at this point, so she ends up giving us to the bartender without any mention of it and was then denied speaking to the kitchen manager, so I offered my feedback to that employee as it is common to afford some authority to the bartender. Mind you, we are probably the youngest "guests" here, being in our 30's. Similarly, there was a guest who happily offered his opinion that I was being a "dick," and perhaps that is true, so after being humorously offended and leaving(they did not charge us for anything, even drinks so +) I did end up apologizing and was offered the feedback that I don't like the word "no." Anyways, this was not a good experience and I do feel the reviews left here are somewhat biased and misleading, so thanks for reading if you made it this far. The reason for the 2 is + from no bill, which was good on them, and as far as I remember they do have decent food and drinks if you can find something appealing. Unfortunately, when you begin to review the management, atmosphere, and culture of "no" is when Fat Willy's begins to lose stars. TL;DR - Food, Drinks - OK. Management, Vibe - Not OK. You may have a bad time if you don't like the word "no," or if you are a Mayo patient or otherwise need a diet. Conversely, you may have a good time if you are a regular or visiting Rochester and do not have a diet or also coming in to spend $$$ with a party that made previous arrangements. read more

My wife and I stopped for breakfast. She had an omelet and cheesy hash browns, I had the "Special", Chicken Fried Steak and hash browns smothered in sausage gravy. If it a killed me I'd a already been in heaven. I love this atmosphere, old cars and old car stuff. If I'm on the South End of town Fat Willy's is my stop. We wanted to try Willy's after a movie at the nearby Marcus Theaters but should have checked the reviews first. When we arrived it felt like a scene from a western where the new posse strolls into the bar, the guy playing the "Old Town Ladies" on piano stops suddenly and the regulars stare. It wasn't clear if it was seat yourself so we tried to act natural and grabbed one of the two lumpy booths in back. The server was pleasant and took our order promptly. We ordered two Surly Axe-Man beers and took a look at the menu. No lack of choice but the options didn't stand out on the busy menu layout. We played it safe and ordered the nacho appetizer and the Mustang burger with horseradish sauce. By this point the people at the bar stopped staring over their Golden Lights and probably wrote us off for the city slickers we were. Our server brought the beers and we looked forward to continuing our date. First sip from the beer was refreshing but not quite right. Turns out the bar tender poured a couple summer shandies instead of the high octane I was expecting. No problem, I informed our sever when she stopped by. A few moments later she comes back with fresh drinks. At first glance I notice they are the same type of beer. Turns out their taps are mixed up and none of them have Surly. We don't want the server to keep waiting for the bar tender to get the taps right, so we settle for drinking our lemon water beer. The food comes and we just want to eat and move on. The feeling we've been wearing out our welcome with our non-lager beer request weighed heavy. Immediately, the nachos brought me back to my childhood. Specifically a memory of swimming at Soldiers Field in Rochester, summer of '95. Canned nacho cheese and stale chips were great after hours in the pool but not what I expected in this moment. The burger was dry as the bun. The check arrived with our original beers so I asked if we could get the correct price for the cheaper beer we received. To our advantage, the server took them off the check entirely. Above and beyond what I intended so I added the value of the drinks in addition to her 20% tip. Hopefully she didn't have to split with the bar staff. Willy's is intended to spark a certain nostalgia with its "antique" reproduction signs and car culture theme. So I've been here twice. The first time I got a Fat Willy burger which was really good. They also have tots which is a big plus in my book. The second time I got the shrimp basket with fries. I'm very particular about my fries and these were on point. Overall, you'll get good bar food. Atmosphere is ok. It has a big car theme which is ok. Bartender was very friendly and gave good service. We were going to the movie theater next door and decided to stop here and have dinner before going to the movie. The decor was in a "hotrod" garage style with lots of old tin signs and license plates on the walls. When we were there, about a third of the place was filled with bikers. As others commented, the service wasn't great, but we weren't completely ignored. We asked about the free popcorn and were told to help ourselves. The food was mostly american - burgers, fries, sandwiches, etc. Most of the food appeared to be what I call the "Sysco standard" - meaning it's bulk industrial frozen food that's been thrown in a fryer or on a cooktop. They also offer a shrimp boil that looks cool. I received service immediately. It wasn't real busy. I ordered a beer and it came right away and it was cold. I ordered the fat willie burger and it arrived before I could finish my first beer (it was hot and I was drinking faster than normal too). The burger was very good! The homemade beans were just like my grandma's. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely come back to try another one of their burgers. I sat a long time finishing my second beer asking myself why I shouldn't rate this a five star experience? I couldn't come up with one on this visit so I gave it five stars.
