I had purchased jewelry prior and called to make sure they could change it with my jewelry. An AI chatbot answered and assured me it was okay, and I couldn't get a human. I show up and they say they saw my note on the reservation about having my jewelry. They only accept jewelry with waivers certifying some kind of accreditation I've never heard of. All around annoying and very easily solvable with any slight amount of customer service and honesty. They find a way to not be accommodating to every person I know who has gone. Beware read more

Fatty's used to be my go-to for piercing, but no longer. And I had at least 3 piercings done at both H St and Dupont. But I think the pandemic knocked them for a loop. My last appointment was two years ago, and the piercer never showed up. Since mid-pandemic, the entrance is locked, and you can ring the doorbell. Most times that I've rung, no one responded. This time, after a while, and after I rang the bell again, someone came to the door, and said, "Kyle's not here." So he just decided not to show up, no text, no call, etc, and that pissed me off (of course!). So I haven't been back. He emailed me a very lame excuse sometime later. read more

There is a very unhelpful and rude Indian man that basically told me without an appointment I could not be serviced. His excuse is that the owner takes the keys with him and he could not access the jewelry or the register. Went in this afternoon to get help putting an earring back in (it's a new tragus piercing and had a hard time screwing the ball back in). The woman at the front desk told me the piercer wasn't there and that no one could help me screw the ball back on. Totally understand. However I asked her if I could purchase a new earring that would be easier to put in, she wouldn't sell me an earring. What kind of business is this?! I asked to use a mirror they have in the waiting room, she told me no and asked me to leave... I just needed help putting an earring in.... really disappointed in this place claiming to be a piercing place but then won't help with piercings. Even my lyft driver offered to help! After browsing through their comments I shouldn't have been surprised. You MUST go and see Ellen. I am going in to get my 3rd and 4th tattoo by her (my 1st & 2nd were also done by her) and she has always been professional and kind. So much so that I trusted her with doing a design and tattoo for my own mom. Ellen has made every tattoo special and always takes her time. I never doubt her ability to design or execute a tattoo. I am a perfectionist and very very picky...*very*. I spent over a year looking for an artist and have stuck with Ellen ever since I discovered her! She is also very honest and will recommend the best sizing and placement for your specific body type. She happily adjusted my tattoo size and placement multiple times and never made me feel like I was being "too difficult" for her like some tattoo artists make their clients feel. I also was never intimidated in the shop and truly felt like I could talk to her as if she was a friend, which is incredible! If you are getting a tattoo I will always recommend her. I travel 5 hours just to see her and wait months to get work done by her. She does have a bit of a wait time but that is due to the line up of people that are also waiting to get literal art tattooed on them by her. Trust me, it's worth it! read more

So my actual tattoo process was fine and I'm very happy with the end product. However, there's definitely some admin stuff that needs major improvement. I was initially scheduled on 3/2 for a tattoo, got a text from the artist that morning asking if we could reschedule b/c they were sick. Fine, life happens. I was happy to reschedule and they were able to get me in the next week. Well the appointment rolls around and I show up about 5 minutes early. Here's where the problems start. The doors are locked b/c they're currently appointment only. They have a doorbell, so all well and good? No. There's no one who works the front desk and apparently they can't hear the doorbell upstairs where they're working. So it's cold out and I'm standing outside trying to get ahold of the artist so I can get my tattoo. I try calling the phone number for the studio but it's just an automated message. Luckily I had the artist's cell phone number. After about 10 minutes, the artist comes downstairs and has clearly forgotten about the appointment and has another client right now. Asks if I can wait 45 minutes. I say yes, had already been rescheduled once and drove in for this. They wrap up with their other client and then need time to do the art for the tattoo. Not sure if this is part of their normal process to do the art during the appointment or if this was because they forgot. Anyway about an hour and 30 minutes after my initially scheduled time, I am finally getting my tattoo. The tattoo came out very nice and the artist did a very good job, which is why I'm giving 4 stars and also not naming them. Because tbh, my feeling is this all could have been avoided if Fatty's employed an admin person to handle bookings/reschedulings/letting people in the door. Yes, it wasn't the most professional thing to forget about an appointment but life happens. I have a feeling that when they were sick they just forgot to add it to the system -- something that likely wouldn't have happened if there was an admin person handling the bookings! So tl;dr got a very nice tattoo but had my appointment forgotten about and had to wait 1.5 hours beyond initial appointment time. Studio needs an admin person! read more

Horrible experience. The artist was either high or mentally not present. He messed up the design. He got me an infection, and I went to Urgent Care and had to take antibiotics. He basically destroyed my skin, and I got huge scabs, too! The room in which the artist was getting me inked did not look clean. When I contacted the person who calls himself the owner (his name is Fatty), he told me they would initially help. Then all of a sudden, he referred me back to the same artist, even though I told him that I did not want to return to the same artist because he messed up the design and got me infected. I needed about a month to heal after the infection and contacted Fatty again; he said that if I wanted him to help me, I needed to come to see him, but for additional money! I came into Fatty's while on a work trip from Oregon. I contacted Stef before I came out to make an appointment. She quoted me for a sternum tattoo she said it while be 3 hours and she would charge 400.00. Once I got in to the shop she was over a half hour late taking me upstairs. For the sternum tattoo I had to tape covers on my nipples and I wasn't offered any kind of privacy curtain or wall. There were two other tattooers plus their clients and others in the room. It was very unprofessional. I was brought up to the tattoo area at 6 pm. She was completely finished by 7:15. Since my quote was for 3 hours I asked what I would be charged for an hour and 15. The man from the desk went to ask Stef. He came back and said 325.00. I was taken back. This is outrageous. What was originally quoted to be about 133.00 dollars an hour I ended up paying over 260.00 an hour. This was a very simple tattoo and I sent exactly what I wanted. It was not a custom art piece that she had to design.It was really deceiving. While I was in the chair the artist next to me was taking in a client. The client wanted a line on her arm. He wanted to charge 100.00 and the senior artist was very stern when he told him he couldn't do that. "Don't change less than 230". Even though the rookie artist knew the tattoo wasn't worth that much he followed what he was told. He even made a comment about feeling wrong for what he charged. I wasn't going to say anything about my experience. But I feel obligated to. When I was doing research everything I read said Fatty's was the "best in DC". I wish I had be warned. read more

I couldn't have nicer things to say about this place and the staff. I've been getting tattooed here exclusively for about a year, and currently have 5 tattoos all done by Gia (I've attached photos of 2 out of the 5). Gia, aside from being an amazing artist, is super responsive and open to ideas. Personally, I take the approach of providing a concept and allowing her to have artistic freedom with my guidance- she's absolutely nailed it every time. However, this isn't to say that she won't tell you the truth about whether a tattoo is going to look awful or whether a design idea needs reworking to be conducive to the tattooing process. She will. She truly cares about providing quality tattoos that she can proudly attach her name to, and it shows. Couldn't be more grateful for all the beautiful art she's put on me! read more

So, this was my first tattoo, but I had a really great experience. I've been to Fatty's in DuPont to get piercings, but I live closer to this location. I stopped in with a friend on the 4th of July and made a deposit and set an appointment time. Gia wasn't there, but she is the artist I got based on what I wanted. I checked out her work online and thought it looked great. Today I came in about fifteen minutes early and met Gia. She was super kind and encouraging about me getting my first tattoo. She talked to me about what would be the best size based on where I wanted it and what it would feel like. She made the stencil and then got started. Every step along the way she wanted to make sure I was super knowledgeable and satisfied. I am very thankful for that. She played good music and got to work. My tattoo is small so it didn't take very long and then she let me ask some additional questions after and gave me some tips. I am happy with what I got and my service. If I ever get another tattoo (not sure I will) I would definitely come back to Gia! read more

I got my second tattoo here done by Matt Slime, who is new to the shop. The price was about what I expected and the store looked very clean. I had been sent over from the DuPont location, and everybody on H Street was really accommodating, considering I was a walk-in and asking for something a bit more complicated. Matt was very friendly, excited about my tattoo, understood what I wanted, and explained to me that the inspiration illustration - kind of like a woodcut - would have to be edited to be put on my leg. He asked for my preference in shading styles, but I decided to let him decide what worked best. From there, he asked lots of questions to give me exactly what I wanted and did not complain when I asked to resize it. He repeatedly asked me if I was doing okay, etc. and really made me feel comfortable throughout the hour long appointment. I am happy to recommend the store and Matt's work! read more

I needed a touch-up on a wrist tattoo I had gotten from a parlor in Charleston, South Carolina. After some research, I decided to get my touch-up at Fatty's. I'm glad and grateful that I did. I went to the H Street location, and the first thing I noticed was how different it looked from other tattoo parlors. The pieces of art hanging on the walls are unique and beautiful, and the place itself looked sleek, efficient, and organized without being stuffy or pretentious. The receptionist listened to my request, and since I was a walk-in on a busy weekday, she penciled me into an afternoon slot, and I secured it with a $50 down payment. She checked in with the tattoo artist, made sure he understood what I was hoping to get done, and was incredibly helpful. I was tattooed by Matt, who knew exactly what to do to help touch up my tattoo. I showed him a photo of what I wanted, and he examined my wrist and made suggestions. He even explained what the Charleston tattoo artist had gotten wrong about what I had wanted from the initial design. Matt immediately put me at ease, never once made me feel worried about what had to be done to touch up the tattoo, and made sure I was comfortable in the chair. Even when another client came up to ask him something about a tattoo idea while he was tattooing me, he stayed focused on my tattoo and made sure he took his time and didn't get distracted. Once Matt had finished, he talked me through the after-care steps and all the do's and don't's. He also reassured me that if I had any questions or concerns, he was reachable and could help. I could not be more pleased with how my tattoo turned out. It now looks exactly like I wanted it to look from the beginning. I was given first-rate service as soon as I walked in, and it means a lot to me because this tattoo means a lot to me, and I'm grateful that everyone understood that and took the time to make sure I was happy and well informed. This review is for the Silver Spring location on Colesville Rd. Me and my best friend had an awesome experience at Fattys with Zac! The whole staff was very professional and friendly. We came in close to 6pm on a Sunday after being turned away and treated poorly at another shop in Bethesda so this experience was a breath of fresh air! Zac was able complete both me and my friends tattoos before closing at 8 without rushing! We loved that he was so honest about placement, sizing, and long term effects.
