I am the CEO of two conservatories of music in San Luis Obispo County. I could not make that statement if it wasn't for Jeff. Meeting Jeff Falgien and the team at Keyboard Concepts was like a breath of fresh air. As a business owner, professional pianist, and piano teacher, I am passionate about piano. I'm also passionate about my students getting the best piano for the lowest possible price... as long as long-term excellent customer service goes along with the deal.
The stores in our area are like used car dealerships... with bully salespeople that act friendly, then won't let you leave without buying their pianos. It scared most of the music teachers in our area out of ever buying new pianos, and we would scour the ads every week looking for "good enough" used pianos for our studios and our students. It was so sad.
I was introduced to Jeff Falgien, V.P. of Keyboard Concepts, by Travis Mitchell of Yamaha Piano Corporation. When I told him of my experiences with piano dealers, he said "Keyboard Concepts is the number one piano store for Yamaha because they care about excellence in everything they do. I promise you won't be disappointed." So I drove down to the store to see for myself. Wow.
5 years later: To say that Jeff has far surpassed my expectations is an understatement. Keyboard Concepts and Yamaha pianos have fundamentally changed the trajectory of who we are as a teaching institution. I owned two "Music Schools" five years ago. Now they are two higher level "Conservatories of Music". We have now purchased new Yamaha pianos for both of our campuses, and our teachers are in heaven. Everyone knows that when they come to us, they learn from the best teachers, progress faster, and play on the best pianos. We have all kinds of Yamahas in our teaching rooms, from B1, B2, and B3 models, to the higher level U1's, and all of them have held up wonderfully in an environment where they are played continuously, 8-10 hours a day. Our recording studio in Arroyo Grande has a GB-1 baby grand piano in it, and our Concert Suite in San Luis Obispo has an amazing CX5 grand piano for us to perform on. I can't even describe how amazing it is to see my dream piano conservatories come to life with beautiful instruments like this!!!
The first students who purchased pianos at the beginning of our relationship with Keyboard Concepts, have done 10-12 years of learning in 5 years. If anyone tries to sell you a used piano and tells you " this used piano is a classic" and that it can just be tuned up to play "like new", do not believe them. It is not worth sacrificing years of a student's energy, time, and motivation to save a few dollars. Pianos are made out of organic materials, and no matter how nice they were in 1985, most of them are not instruments anymore.
Yesterday, we got a piano donated to our non-profit. It seemed in great shape for being 50 years old, and looked pretty. As soon as I played it, my heart sank. After playing on new pianos for 5 years, I realized how bad it really was when we didn't know better. It is so critical to progress, as a teacher and as a student, to have high quality instruments to learn on. At the studio and at home. Keyboard Concepts makes that dream possible with a sales team, including Pam Smith, who is a piano teacher too! She works with me to make sure my students get exactly the right piano for their needs. Buying a piano isn't just about getting the lowest price, although we get that too. It's about 5, 10, 15 years down the road... is the company still standing behind the products that they sell? Are they responsive when you have a question? In my experience, these guys are hands down the best.
My favorite part: Keyboard Concepts has this program called "lifetime tradeup policy". I advise ALL of my students to take advantage of it. They actually work with students to help them afford to get into a good piano from day one of lessons by allowing the student to trade up to another piano, (must be twice the original price), at any time in the future. That means if I have a student who needs to start with a smaller yamaha upright piano for financial reasons, and in 5-10 years step up to a grand piano, they can do it easily. They don't have to deal with selling one piano, moving it, and buying another, and moving that one in... and they've already got credit towards a substantial part of the new piano price! I can't tell you how important this is for our young families. When students start on a Yamaha piano, they learn really quickly because it is motivating when the instrument responds to you. Having the option to trade up to a yamaha grand piano in 5-10 years is something only Keyboard Concepts offers. read more
