This place is super unassuming from the outside, but the food is so good it'll have you ready to dance. We ordered a ton, including the Tuesday taco plate with fries. I got the chicken tinga, steak, and samosa taco. The steak was good but nothing crazy, the chicken tinga was *so* flavorful, and the samosa taco (which was recommended to me) ended up being my favorite. Whatever sauce they put on it was amazing. The fries were surprisingly good too. really well seasoned with a slight kick. We also shared elotes and guac, and both were solid. Ordered steak burrito last night about 40 minutes before closing and everything tasted ok. A couple hours later when I laid down my stomach started to hurt. The pain increased throughout the night and caused me to have to spend most of the day in the bathroom today. Don't know if something in the burrito was spoiled or expired or something was unclean or contaminated when preparing the food but not a good experience. Definitely won't ever be going back. I placed an order at 9:01pm via their mobile app. My sister found this location as it was near our hotel. On their website, they have you get $7 off your first order via the app. When placing the order via the app, the discount did not apply. I called the restaurant and I was told they would manually check that it's my first order and provide a refund. I got the kids chicken quesadilla and fries for my son. I got the 3 taco plate American and Mexican style without lettuce and tomato. One taco was chicken, one was steak, and one was chorizo. I got rice and beans on the side. The order was ready at 9:09pm. I like how they placed the refried beans in a little fried tortilla cup so that it wouldn't be messy and mixed with the other food. We were a large party of adults and kids. The layout was spacious, allowing us to grab enough space. It's a self-ordering system with a QR code but they bring the food to the table. Enjoyed the great variety of both Indian fusion flavors such as paneer taco as well as more traditional items that kids expect such as Mexican pizza. My shrimp tacos were pretty good too, but nothing to write home about. The chicken taco I got was fantastic, and again, it hit the right spice level without overwhelming the protein. This is a nice casual restaurant to come grab a quick bite. They have an extensive menu and have a lot of different fusion food which I loved. They also give the option of just getting a few small things instead of having to order big platters of food. We had come here as we wanted something light for dinner and this place fit the bill. Absolutely love the menu and the extensive list of options. As an Indian, the new Indian food themed tacos were great. What they definitely have going for them are the reasonable prices on some of the more standard tacos and the salsa bar (my favorite part). Some might find the prices steep, but it's what you expect for River North. I enjoy sampling all the salsas, especially because I love spicy food. Great place if you have a late night taco craving. Our first taco choice closed their kitchen an hour before closing so we scrambled to find another place nearby to grab something to eat. She brought out our food and we had no napkins. I asked for a knife and she said they are located inside, meaning to go get them ourselves. This is what confuses me about these half-self served places. You pay before getting serviced and also leave a tip before anything happens and you need to service yourself and get less than stellar service. I have been to this location twice now and both times have been amazing. My most recent visit was for a Yelp Elite event. I ordered: -the margarita flight: I was able to sample each flavor & each one was great. However, my favorite was definitely the pineapple. The owners explained how they use their own proprietary tequila & fresh juices imported from Mexico! Amazing. -chips + hot salsa + queso: chips were perfectly crunchy and seasoned, the salsa was warm which was a pleasant surprise (had great flavor and consistency too), and the queso was also delicious. -Korean beef taco: I'm Korean & the marinade on this steak was spot-on. It tasted like I was eating my mom's bulgogi!! The addition of jalapeño and cilantro perfectly compliments the beef. -cajun shrimp taco: this was very well-seasoned & the combination of the mango salsa and shrimp was the perfect bite. -samosa taco: loved this one as well. The samosas were perfectly crisp & the mint and tamarind sauces were great. Couple of critiques though--more sauce would've been great & I would've loved to get this on the corn tortilla instead of the flour. They told me you can only get this taco in the flour shell. Don't sleep on the salsa bar either!! I tried every flavor & they were all on point. If I had to pick a favorite though, it would probably be the avocado one. It just tasted so fresh! My friends have been raving about the paneer tacos at this spot for quite some time now so I decided go give it a shot! I consider myself an expert on most things paneer because I've grown up eating it on a regular basis SOOOOO I went in thinking, what's all this hype about? All in all, these tacos were decent, but not so good that I would come back specifically to eat here, especially when they are so many other great taco options in Chicago. We ordered a trio of tacos with the shrimp, fish, and steak tacos. My favorites were probably the shrimp and the fish which I felt like were a 3.5/5. The steak taco was just ok in my opinion 3/5. Don't ever buy a gift card here. Six months or so after I bought a $100 gift card it "expired" and they wouldn't let me use it, which is illegal. By law gift cards are not allowed to expire in Illinois. I tried a few more times to use it and the staff just said it was expired. I am only in town a few times a year and didn't have time to argue about it. I finally went in and insisted they call the manager. Wasted 25 minutes of my time to get it straightened out. They said the card expired because they switched to a different system. The manager claimed this is the first time they've heard of this problem. How convenient, they take your money then a few months later switch to a new gift card system that invalidates your card and they don't let you redeem it. Instead of transferring your credits to the new system, they just tell the staff not to accept "expired" gift cards. How many customer's gift card money did Taco Maya keep, because who has time to call a manager and deal with the runaround? Shady! read more
