I've dined in and had take outs from here before and I am sorry to say, I have never been particularly impressed with their food. It's decent, don't get me wrong. But it's not something I would go out of my way to eat. We dined in with a friend who had a halal diet and although most of the dishes were ok, I found all of them to be way too salty. The green beans were well done but super salty, the Chili shrimp was perhaps the saltiest out of our order, the fried rice and noodles were rather flavourless and the sweet and sour chicken was meh. If we didn't have to find a halal restaurant, we would have opted to eat elsewhere and I have no plans to return here anytime soon as my blood pressure sky-rocketed after my meal. In the area about to head home decided to pickup up a light dinner. Wish we had did a dine in but it was late. Vegan Tofu Manchurian - the sauce/gravy was completely different from the usual we Hakka Manchurian we have. It tasted more sweet and sour sauce/gravy. The Tofu fried and was super soft inside. The Vegan Fried Rice without any eggs was OK. It was bland for a Hakka fried rice. We found that not only the spice was less but also less seasoned. Hot sauces provided didn't help much. read more

They're very consistent and fast - get my usual of chilli chicken (dry) and chicken pakoras and they never fail...quality. I tried the beef curry once and that was really good too. I love that this location is essentially untouched and looks the same as it did when they first opened. Both are surprisingly quick especially considering the amount of orders they get. Their food is also very consistent - I've never had a dish that tasted out of the norm. Was in the area so decided to pick up a meal from here since it was a really long time I didn't have hakka food but what a let down! Walked in and ordered but the man taking the order came off as very rude. As if it was close to closing time and couldn't be bothered to take our order. He couldn't even make eye contact and when asked questions they were a blunt 'no' as if we were annoying him. Clearly the customer service wasn't great. The food was very mediocre. I got the chilli chicken with rice and because it's covid asked for some paper plates to eat outside to which they answered they don't have (which is odd as many restaurants made accommodations to carry this since indoor dining is closed). To add we were 1 of atleast 5 cars in their parking lot eating outside with their takeout boxes - you would think they would have thought about this a while ago. As for taste, I've had many chilli chickens and this was by far the worst. The only reason I've given stars is because the chicken pieces used were decent (not full of chicken skin like most places and they gave a fair portion of chicken) but taste wise it was extremely bland. There were no onions or chillies (it's chilli chicken!?). If you want GOOD hakka food. Try places in mississauga. You won't be disappointed!!!! read more

Not sure what happened here, but the past few visits were not great at all. To begin, not sure if they got new staff or what it is, but majority of the staff here are rude now and they tend to rush you. It's nothing compared to the Markham location (which is amazing!). They don't check up on you, and if you need something you have to stare them down to make eye contact (as creepy as it sounds!). Second, the food here definitely downgraded. I mean, it isn't horrible, you can still enjoy it, however portions went down like crazy! Also, the chilli chicken is not spicy as it used to be. I used to love the chilli chicken here, but the last few times I got it, it was enjoyable, but not as amazing as it used to be. Don't recommend this location, go to the Markham location instead. Food was disgusting and horrible. We ordered the chilli chicken and crispy beef, and wontons. The bill was in or around $30. The wontons tasted like glue and old styrofoam. Had a sprinkle of meat that wasn't discernible which animal it came from (0/10) The chilli chicken was Luke warm when we picked it up 10 mins after ordering. Flavour and any type of seasoning was missing, I would've been better off eating the container it came in. (0.1/10) The crispy beef was terrible absolutely inedible. So disappointing! Living in downtown Toronto without a car, I was looking forward to eating Federick's for years, so a friend decided to order take-out and deliver it to me. To my misfortune, they must have served me the pandemic edition of their food because it was flavourless and stale. I ordered the Manchurian Shrimp Fried Rice and Shrimp Pakoras. The rice tasted like old rice you find in the back of your refrigerator and the pakoras also tasted old and refried. The batter tasted like old KFC, and maybe a small piece of shrimp if I was lucky, while the rest was either mystery meat or just plain stale batter. This is so sad because the food was so bad, I'm not sure I even want to try their restaurant post-pandemic. read more

Federick, you really disappointed me!! When your kitchen's cooking is worse than mine, I really have an issue!! The Corn with Crab soup is so starchy that basically my spoon can just stuck there upright! The Crab though not fake crab are the previously frozen/canned varieties and is so fishy! I definitely can make my soup from the canned corn from the supermarket and makes it so much better! The whole table even have a hard time even finishing their small bowl. The Chilli Chicken has no chilli, no spicy, no fire... It is not even wok hot! The reason I am eating out in an restaurant because I want the dish to be fresh and serve hot directly from the wok.... It taste like something I get from T&T hot food department... The Fish Pakora hardly have any favour... but at least it is the best out of the 3... The indifference waiterstaffs with no smile I can get over since this is normal for Chinese restaurant.. but medicore food.. I really cannot stand! I've been coming here for well over 10 years, and it's always been great. Parking lot is a ridiculous Zoo, even considering there's more parking out back, but tight quarters and lots of rude people make it a nightmare everytime. The restaurant itself is very small, although much nicer since the renovations, than it used to be. Service is curt and efficient at best, rude and completely uninterested at worst. But the food, the food is still fabulous. Spectacular extra spicy chili-studded chicken pakora, served with spicy dip and even more tiny green chiles, are absolutely delicious and perfectly fried, so they are crispy on the outside, yet super moist and tender inside. Also great are the stir fried green beans and the chili chicken never fails to satisfy. My other guilty pleasure is the sweet and sour shrimp over fried rice lunch special, which feature relatively small, but freshly battered and deep-fried, shrimp with pineapple, onion and bell pepper in an electric neon hot pink sweet and sour sauce. Served over a huge container of fried rice, and all for about $6 bucks, how can you complain about that? That bargain lunch special and an order of chicken pakora gets a huge eater like me TWO full meals, or a moaning, aching, whiny afternoon if I foolishly try to tackle the whole thing, LOL STILL a great place, in my book. This is the Original Frederick's. It's is one of those classic Hakka Restaurants that everyone knows about, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien even dined here back in the day. Now newly renovated, the aesthetic and vibe has changed so much in recent years, This location in particular is the older one out of the two, but it still holds up pretty well. I've only dined in a couple of times, and it's not amazing, I honestly much rather prefer takeout from this location. I some of my usual go-to dishes are: Veggie Hakka Noodles - The noodles are always thick and cooked so well. Never soggy or limp. Chili Chicken with Gravy - a staple! it has a lot of green chillies Manchurian Chicken with Gravy - Tossed in a Red Manchurian Sauce, it has a great taste and its not too spicy! Chilli Paneer: It's honestly a great alternative if you're a vegetarian. Veggie Fried Rice - it's honestly just as good as the Chicken Fried Rice, (they just substitute the chicken with Broccoli ) so if you have vegetarian with you, definitely get this to share! Chicken Corn Soup - A Hakka Staple! It's a pretty mild soup with exactly as its described; chicken and corn. The portions are always generous, and the price point is pretty great. read more

Federick is an ideal example of a poor choice that keeps repeating itself. Believe me, I am still perplexed as to why I keep dining here even though I've never really received anything outstanding. All I can really say is that it's popular in Scarborough, particularly among UTSC students (note: I'm a grad). When I arrived last week, the restaurant was booked up for a birthday party. Therefore, the workers gave out numbers and began a lineup for walk-ins. Strangely enough, this numbering system was poorly managed, which infuriated the family ahead of me. Customer service has never been Federick's strong point, so I wasn't fazed by this occurence. All I can safely say is that if the restaurant has been booked up for a party, it's best to look elsewhere for grub. Furthermore, I wouldn't recommend you to bring any company that is stringent about hygienic standards. It is commonplace to receive cutlery and dishes that haven't been fully washed. During times like these, I wouldn't bother asking for replacements, as we've received dishes of the same unsanitary quality. Just order a canned beverage instead of drinking from your glass and try to ignore the smudges on your plate. Now, going back to the service, the servers can either be nonchalant or borderline rude. I have had servers who have clucked their tongues at me when I've been a bit slow at grabbing my wallet from my bag; I've had ones who would never check up on our table; and I've had the types who would just hastingly push food onto the table. If good service is key for you or if you're the type to easily get irritated at rude or careless actions, then stay away from this restaurant. The food is also not a saving grace. The portions are reasonable to excellent and the flavours are decent to great, as I find the seasonings and spice combinations to be enjoyable. However, any quality other than taste can sometimes be lack-luster. For example, the breading on the pakoras can be too thick at times, making them slightly soft by the end of the meal, and the wanton soups can...lack a decent number of wontons! By no means were all the dishes terrible. Some were flavourful, but I have never been ''hooked'' onto any dish I've tried here. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Federick if you're craving quality Hakka food. If you're on a budget and aren't too picky with sanitation and service, then you may want to try the combos at the back of the menu (see my photo). read more

Looks like I am doing another Hakka restaurant review. I decided to return to a restaurant that I haven't eaten at for 13 years simply because I forgot the name. Once I found out this was it, I had to go and see if nostalgia had the better of me or was it great indeed. The Place: Clearly since being here last the restaurant does have a nice face lift. Parking is available, but much more at the back. Experience: While it has a hole in the wall feel, it is a cult-favorite for a lot of people. It was packed but I was ready to wait. The staff was great, didnt write anything down but got everything correct; colour me impressed. Food did not take long to come out at all. The Food: My date and I decided on the Shrimp Pakoras to start, Szechuan shrimp, Manchurian Chicken, House Special Mixed Chow Mein. I have to say, I forgot how much they give you... Man oh man. This restaurant has got to be one of those places where you wouldn't expect to find great hot and sour soup, but it does. Strangely, this place serves "Indian Chinese" food. They have Sichuan style Chinese food but also, serves things like pakoras and Indian influenced food. The original owners are ethnically Chinese but worked in India at the Oberoi Hotel. When they moved to Canada, they opened a restaurant and with them brought the influences of their time in India with them. The new owners have retained the restaurant's original flavors, and why not? It has definitely worked -- why change a good thing? You will find many Indian clientele in here as well as Chinese. Honestly, this place has the best hot and sour soup I've ever had -- even in Asia -- as they make it with just the right amount of kick to it! The restaurant is quite clean and they have a number of booths available; there's also a 'take out' area. I went on a Saturday afternoon at twelve o'clock. It wasn't too busy on the 'dine in' side; however, the 'take out' side was quite busy. We ordered a number of dishes, including: beef and broccoli, lemon chicken, and fried rice.
