Gave a second chance but walked…read more 1st time, my elderly mother went there to get an estimate to mail two trays of black and white cookies. lady said they'd need to build a box. mom said I first would like to know how much before you go through that trouble. she built the box anyway. $100 to ship two trays of BJ's black and white cookies. At this point mom felt pressured to ship as they built the box and put all the info in computer. totally took advantage of her and I was angry for her. 2nd time I went with my son yesterday to mail a home decoration we found antiquing. asked what it was, I said decoration, made from metal and wooden. I was quite literally grilled for specifics. I felt so vulnerable having to literally describe in detail my item. I was told they needed to know exactly so if it fell out of the box they knew what box to put it back in. That was not going to happen. It was a box inside a box inside a box. Each box individually taped. I felt that was none of their business as I did not want to donate to their home. I gave sufficient detail at a wood and metal home decoration. she measured weighed put my address in. told me $115, deliver on Thursday. I thanked her but took my item and left. drove down the street to a different UPS store. completely different experience. Clean, friendly and no grilling of what I was mailing they were happy in knowing it was a home decoration made of wood and metal. period. $61 to ship. deliver on Thursday. what the heck? how in the world do they have such huge discrepancies. both had same information, same package, same everything. and how in the world do you sleep at night charging my mom, 87 years old, $100 to mail 2 trays of BJ's black and white cookies. She asked for an estimate and you made a kind woman feel hostage to your box building. honestly you should be ashamed of yourselves. that is truly ridiculous!!! after I experienced the crazy yesterday it's confirmed, lack integrity and honesty and YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to know precisely what is in my package. I shared what you needed to know and then you wanted to rip my son off and charge $115.

TL;DR: For the really important stuff, trust these guys…read more Longer version: Was in Ithaca for a family memorial service; thus the ceramics and pottery we were shipping back to California had a great deal of value to us. How do you ship several pounds of bowls, ceramic art and sculptures? Could have used the Post Office, UPS Store, etc...and probably end up with a box of fragments when it arrived. Found Uncle Marty's on Yelp, and was encouraged by the reviews, so we drove the rental with a trunk full of ceramics there. Staff was very understanding, kind, and friendly. At the same time, while they were gentle on the items and very mindful of how to pack them, they were also very conscious of the cost implications, and worked through several different options to find the right number of boxes (and the right sizes) to ship off the items to two different locations (daughter in Chicago, us back in California). While it didn't end up being inexpensive (not Uncle Marty's fault...FedEx ain't never been the cheapest), I am pleased that every single item arrived perfectly packed, safe, and undamaged. I'm not sure if I'll ever find myself again needing to ship things from upstate New York, but if I do I know where I'll go.

I have a DHL account I've used for charging the cost of shipments; however, the person I spoke with at the front desk of Uncle Marty's while trying to ship out my parcel said that they have a specific retail export account number that all shipments get assigned to when being scheduled for pick-up... so they can't use alternative DHL accounts for charging shipments. When I offered to pay for the shipment with my procurement card, that seemed to be fine... until I inquired further about whether or not duties/fees could be charged to that same procurement card upon their arrival at the destination processing facility (I was shipping to Tanzania, and this is an easy process when shipping via your own DHL account). I've typically ensured our office - as the sender - makes payment on duties/fees for a parcel, at least within the last couple years (it expedites the delivery, and many international institutions in the developing world don't have the easily accessible means to pay for duties/fees on an item that's being provided to them as a donation). Since I wasn't able to ensure that duties/fees would be paid by me/my procurement card as the sender - and I couldn't use my own DHL account - I ended up leaving, parcel in-hand, without being able to get it processed and sent out via Uncle Marty's. I was also able to leave with a single plastic waybill packet, as well as a paper waybill... after specifically requesting both items (more than once). While DHL has certainly preferred folks go through their electronic scheduling system in recent years, that has proven to sometimes be problematic when shipping to certain parts of the world (given the need for indicating villages / areas that aren't especially known)... so I like to have a couple paper waybills handy, and I *HAVE* been able to ship out with paper waybills (i.e. without DHL rejecting the parcel because of a paper waybill) without issue. In the beginning of working from home back in March, I had gone to the Pack & Ship store that used to be on the corner of the Commons to ship out an identical parcel. There? No issues whatsoever (and yes, I used a paper waybill for that parcel). But that store is closed now, so I opted to try Uncle Marty's. Unfortunately, the process isn't as easy here as it was at the store on the Commons (which was so much easier because I was just able to use my DHL account number for any / all charges). TL;DR The explanation above probably includes more complicating factors than most shipments being sent out via Uncle Marty's, but it was my experience. The guy I spoke with at the desk was certainly friendly and answered my questions helpfully (hence the rating), but it's important to know the complicating factors of trying to use your own DHL account, etc.

Every line you call, whether it is the online number, the customer support number on their website in your account, or even the local telephone numbers listed for your local stores and offices, they all get re-routed to AI. And just like the UPS system which converted over roughly a year or so ago, it's purpose is not to provide actual customer support but to act as two things. First to give the appearance that the company actually still offers all around customer support and second, to act as a wall between you and whatever remaining human support they may still retain. This has been the trend these past two years with most of the massive corporations. Unfortunately, this is terribly problematic. If you have a situation that does not fall within the limited categories the AI system provides, it will simply tell you it cannot help you and cannot transfer you to a representative, wish you a good day and too call again. You can dial in "0" as many times as you wish, but it will simply hang up on you. You can ask to speak to a customer service representative but it will only tell you it doesn't understand what you need, or demand that you provide it a reason for the call otherwise is cannot have a representative speak to you. And how did I encounter this beast today? It began when trying to update information on my account on their website. I wanted to try once again to update an apartment number. I have been trying to do this online for the past four months with no success. You can enter it in, hit save, and it will give you an error. It won't tell you what that error is, or caused by, it will just not accept your apartment number no matter what form you try. And as it had done previously, this error will repeat two or three times before finally telling you that that there is a system problem. After reloading the page, and trying again, the same result will occur. This problem has been going on for months. I also, wanted to verify that my delivery instructions were to have packages left on the back porch as anything left out front often is stolen. I had two packages stolen on January 30, 2025 because they were left out there against my instructions. Now up until today however, I discovered I can no longer verify or edit delivery instructions. If you wish to update your delivery instructions, which there seems to be a section for that, when you go to do so there is no active link or entry field top enter it where supposedly "Delivery Instructions" exists. Apparently there isn't very much quality control with website development at FedEx. And as mentioned, any attempts to contact FedEx is only going to waste your time, your energy, but most of all your patience. I spent the better part of twenty minutes calling repeatedly, trying different phone numbers, different responses, etc., but got nowhere. UPS had instituted a similar change roughly over a year ago as well. Their system was even more draconian in the way it handled customer problems. Their system would simply tell you out right that it could not help you, wish you a good day, welcome you to call again if you have a problem and hang up. But being that all we have are UPS, FedEx and USPS for non-commercial shipping, we have no choices. Of the three, USPS is the most responsive, but if the current administration's aspirations are successful, their days are numbered as the long term goal going as far back at the 1980s, has been to privatize the USPS. They've been tossing wrench's into that since 2006 to set it up to fail. Unfortunately since few people actually pay attention to specifics, its easy to convince people there are problems where there are not, that whatever problems occur are for the reasons said when they're actually artificially caused and on purpose to convince people of a lie. Sadly, privatizing what is still the world's most efficient and best example of mail and package delivery both domestic and foreign is about to be over and done with. Not because there is or has ever been any problem with it, but because of the massive amount of profit, for-profit commercial interests can reap from it. But then this is what fascism is all about... handing over governmental processes and responsibilities over to private enterprise. But Americans know it as "running government like a business". So, if that is what we want, and have voted for... so be it. I can't wait until the reality of such a situation finally comes to fruition. Because those who do the harvesting are not going to be us little people.
