We had been in the market for a new fence for a long period of time. In the end, we whittled our choices down to Fenceworks, and a local competitor. The Fenceworks' sales rep was great. He assures us that they had been in business for a long time, and their workmanship was much better than the other company we had considered. With that reassurance, we went ahead and signed a contract. The crew came out and rushed the job. The board-on-board fence was not plumb. The boards were not spaced properly on both our side and our neighbors' side, and the boards were not straight. We called the company, a supervisor came out and agreed to replace the boards on our side, not on either of our neighbors side. They came out, redid the job and then came out again because the boards of our gates had come un-attached. The third time, it took several phone calls, texts, and emails to get a response. Even now, many more boards along the fence have cracked at the nail holes, and other boards have popped out. I have spent many days nailing back boards in that have come unattached and now have to figure out how to replace some of the cracked boards that have split....and this is after only one month! All of the people at Fenceworks are polite and professional, but the quality of the material, as well as the actual craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired. Unfortunately for us, our friends went with the other company we had considered for the exact same type of fence, and their fence looks amazing. read more

Sandy did a great job of quoting our fence and dealing with some significant last minute changes that my wife and I had. The construction team led by Lucas was wonderful and they put up a whole lot of fence in a day and half (all of it custom measured and hand built on site). Many neighbors stopped by to appreciate their craftsmanship and we have received a ton of compliments already. If I were to offer some advice on how to improve the business, it would be to include services like trellis tops for gate entries. Apparently they do not off this or pergola type installs. Installers are uninsured and management do not take responsibility! Fenceworks installed a new fence in our neighbors yard last year. As the installation crew were leaving they backed their truck into my wife's car causing a huge dent that ended up costing over $1500 to repair. The Fenceworks crew drove away without leaving their information. Fortunately our neighbor witnessed the whole thing through his front window and was able to give the police a full account. The police then spoke to Fenceworks, who told them that their drivers are independent contractors and therefore this was not their responsibility. Turns out this particular driver was not insured. And after over a year of phone calls and letters and legal action, my insurance company has finally given up. I am left having to pay the full deductible and claim through my own insurance for the damage - which increases my premiums. Bad business practice by Fenceworks. Everyone needs to know they hire uninsured workers. read more

I needed to replace a 30+-year-old white picket fence. I called 3 different companies for an estimate. One company, despite setting an appointment to meet, never showed up. The other company came out, however, my gut feeling was this was not right. Sandy (The Guy on 41/Fenceworks) came out and showed me several options. I was leaning towards a PVC fence and he explained, in detail, why this perhaps wasn't the best option (despite the fact that it was twice as expensive as what he was recommending). He also made clear that it would be 3-4 months before the job would be completed. I ended up using Fenceworks. Yesterday (almost 4 months later) they came out to install the fence. Holy Moses! IT LOOKS FABULOUS AND WAS MOST DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT! The fence exceeded all my expectations. The crew was phenomenal - very courteous, very professional and the yard looked cleaner when they left than when they arrived. These guys are great!! We hired them to take down a chain link fence and replace it with one that matched the wood fence on the other side. It required two visits since the chain link fence was grown into the trees and we would need to have the trees removed in two parts. They came exactly when they said they would and did exactly what they promised to do for the price they quoted. They listened to our concerns about our small dog and they built the fence to accommodate him. And guys... the fence looks great. Was looking for an outdoor swing set/club house for our two kids (both under age six). I get that these guys have been in the business for a long time, but holy cow, their attitude is atrocious. It's like they're doing you a favor when they talk to you. We have had fence work done by Fenceworks a couple of different times. If I could give half stars I would. The sales representative we dealt with was great, Rob. No issues. However, after the sale you don't deal with them ever again. The scheduling person is great too. Very kind. She explains the process well. The first time they put up gates and a few small areas of fence to close our yard. The second time we had them put in about 140ft of fence. A couple of issues: 1. The crew listened to something our neighbor told them to NOT do. They didn't ask us! This effected the installation of the fence. I was floored that they listened to our neighbor. He was the reason we were getting the fence! 2. The leader of the crew was not there during the installation. He may have been there at some point but not for a significant portion of the installation. So, when we ran into this issue I had no one to talk to about it. 3. We had issues contacting people in charge of the crews and dealing with the issues. It was very frustrating. In the future, we won't return to them or recommend them. I need to clarify. The issue with the crew wasn't a yard issue. It was removal of our fence which the neighbor doesn't own and has no right to influence. We own it and wanted all the posts removed. He wanted the last one kept in. read more

The Good: When my fence was completed, it looked great. The workers that were sent out to build then fence over the three day period were hardworking, accommodating, and friendly. The communicated well and did a flawless job on the fence. 5 stars for Jose and crew. The Bad: The Fenceworks office and scheduling. They took a $1030 deposit from me and then held it for almost 2 weeks without so much as a peep about scheduling the actual fence to be installed. I had to call three times to prompt someone into calling me back. I received a callback to schedule the building of the fence on Friday afternoon, asking if they could send the guys on Saturday -- i don't get home from work until 6, and the office was closed so i could not call back. at that point i had no idea if they would come the next day or not. i don't think 18 hours is very good notice for one, especially when you don't even give the customer a chance to call back. At that point we started dealing directly with the worker who was doing the building because we had his cel phone number. Once that happened, then fence was installed within 3 days and looked great. when the fence was done, the workers reported back to Fenceworks that it had been completed. no problem there. it was the middle of the day on Tuesday so my wife and i were still at work. without even checking in with us to see if we approved of the final construction and before we had even seen the completed fence, the people at FW charged my debit card for the balance of the bill (over $2000) and overdrew my checking account. They didn't ask how it was, if it was completed satisfactorily, if i wanted to use a different card (which I did, obviously). no courtesy call whatsoever. i never gave authorization to run the balance on the card i used for the deposit, and they knew neither I nor my wife had seen the completed product. when i called that afternoon, i explained to the lady who answered that you cannot do what they just did. not only have i not seen the completed work yet, but you can't just run $2k without asking, especially on a debit card! i told her it was kind of a serious problem because now i have no cash for 3 days until Chase posts the reverse, and she laughingly said "oh no!" and offered to void it. no offer to comp overdraft fees or anything because of their ridiculously antsy accounting department. i told them to run the charge on a different card, and the charge showed up immediately, of course. at this point, the job is complete, and the fence is actually great. however, i NEVER received a call or followup about "how is the fence?", or "how was the experience," "were our workers OK," etc. Their office staff and management seems uninterested in anything but having their underlings build fences while they collect dough and move on to the next job regardless of what happened on the previous. I would rate Fenceworks 1.5 stars for procedure, communication, and general service-industry decency, and the fence/workers who built it 5 stars. I guess that comes out to 3. read more

We just had our fence installed yesterday. The entire experience was very positive and quick. I think we originally contacted them less than a month ago. Some of the delay is with the city getting permits. The fence between our neighbor and us almost fell down and we had to prop it up. Ironically we received a color ad in our letterbox within days from Fenceworks and gave them a call to get a quote. Their rep came out within days and was super knowledgeable and friendly and provided a quote within 30 minutes. To make sure they were competitive we got another quote from another fencing company and can you believe it, the other quote was $890 more than Fenceworks for the exact same design and materials. Fenceworks Were helpful in assisting us in getting the permit from the city offices and once we received provided us with an approximate date of work commencement. The team from Fenceworks came out (Randy and Mario) and proceeded to get the job done but first walking the site and making sure exactly what we wanted, they would put up. They did an amazing job and left the site clean and free of debris. The company ensured that all work was to our satisfaction before debiting our card for the final amount due. Where do you get this sort of care nowadays. Words to describe them are, Professional, Knowledgeable, Friendly and getting the finished product is exactly what was promised. We had Fenceworks install our fence on our new house. The first problem was the gate that stopped working. They sent a repairman out and we were told that the 20 year guarentee didn't cover the gate and we'd have to pay to repair it out of pocket. Since then various sections of the fence have rotted and fallen down. They were the less expenseive option at the time we built... but, you really do get what you pay for. read more

Our fenceposts they installed some ten years ago have rotted prematurely, and needed reinforcing. Gotta lotta mouth from Bob Roberts, including his schtik why they are still at it with their [third party careless] crews, and why other firms are supposedly going under. Same old story from a egotistically old old school fence shop whose ancient invoice system is 19th Century and barely readable. Unable to take valid criticism constructively, they used that stooopid excuse to bow out of a job last moment, making it a genuine blessing for us in disguise, since a higher quality, more modern, more professional firm has been contracted.........and fence works doesn't work anymore. Urging new buyers to beware, judge for yourselves, but don't waste your time OR money on such unprofessional baby business behavior. You may live to regret it. read more

Fenceworks put up a new scalloped picket cedar fence in our backyard, and we couldn't be happier. They came out and were very helpful, suggesting the scallop to hide the unevenness of our yard. They said it would take about two weeks, and two weeks later we had temperatures just warm enough that they removed the old fence and sunk the posts in concrete on one day, and came back the next day to build the fence, finishing by lunchtime. They came up with an elegant solution for a tree right in the middle of our property line, they heeded our request to remove as little as possible from a bush near the property line, and they added extra boards in when I requested the gaps between the house and our neighbor's fence be smaller. The hardware they used for the gates is sturdy and high quality.It looks great and we've gotten tons of compliments already. The warranty is for "the life of the fence," (supposedly approximately 15-20 years depending on treatment and conditions) but we couldn't get anybody to put that in writing for us. Hopefully it's not an issue. Since they also built the fence by hand rather than a modular design (which I liked), they did spend a lot of time in our neighbor's yard, as the nice side faces out - just something I would have warned our neighbors about if I had known. read more

He then called me back and stated that Dennis will be calling me to set up an appointment to check the fence out and to just pay him directly. We recently purchased a swing set from Fenceworks. We let them know up front we have a slope in our yard and they said it's usually no problem. We chose fenceworks because they were a little cheaper than rainbow, but still good quality, and we liked supporting a family owned, local company. They came to install and couldn't due to the slope. They told us we had to pay a $700 restocking fee plus $150 to the installation company (who was at our house for 5 minutes). After a few discussions, they just made us pay the $150. We have no swing set and we are out $150 for 5 minutes of time AND we told them from the beginning we had a slope. Meanwhile, we've now been in touch with rainbow who has a product that will resolve the slope (extenders) and suggested to have someone come out- free of charge- to see our yard prior to installation. If you're looking for a company who will look out for their customers, rainbow is the way to go. Should've gone this route from the beginning. read more

Horrible -- NEVER use this company. I waited far too long to give this review, but have finally reached the last straw today when an entire section of my fence fell over. I have had it with the sub-par lumber, sub-par craftsmanship and and horrible construction. The horrible wood they used has had horrible cupping and warping and at this point is so rotten it can't be fixed. The post they used as the anchor for the gate had a huge crack down the side. After the first year when it started warping, the gate stopped operating properly and the crack made it impossible to adjust the hinges. When I called back to ask them to address it, they wanted to charge me for the resolution. I told them to shove it. If they can't even stand behind their work I don't want them coming back. Good luck if you decide to use them. Perhaps they got better carpenters and started using better lumber. If not, you will be sorry. read more

We asked for an explanation of the differences and with that information were able to make a choice that was appropriate for our needs. The price we paid was fair and was in line with other quotes and again, we love the fence. Original review: Let me start by saying, our fence is beautiful! The sales guy, Rob, was great! However, beyond that, the customer service here is absolutely terrible. After we received the quote, I wanted to schedule the installation as it was getting colder. I called several times but was informed I couldn't schedule the installation until I had the permit from the city. I knew it would be a week or two for the permit and fenceworks lead time was 2 weeks. It would have been nice not to have to wait extra time especially as what we needed was simple. Anyways, we got the permit within 2 weeks, made the deposit to fenceworks and was assured our fence would be completed within another two weeks. 1.5 weeks went by without any contact for scheduling. I called to find out when fenceworks would schedule but the production manager had already left for the day and since it was thanksgiving weekend, I would have to wait 4 more days before receiving a call back. When he did call after the holiday, he tried to schedule the fence for the following week (at this point, it would have been 3+ weeks waiting for installation plus the time it took to get a permit). He obliged by scheduling a couple of days sooner. The fence installers installed the posts one day and said they'd be back the next day at 11 to finish the boards. No one came back and when I called fenceworks to find out where they were, no one called me back or followed up. The installers did show up the next day (a Saturday) much to our surprise as we had no idea when they were coming back. After they were finished, they provided us with a bill but hadn't taken any of the debris. The installer said someone from fenceworks would come by to get it. My husband wrote on the invoice to be returned to fenceworks that the debris still needed to be removed. This week, our credit card was charged (without prior authorization) and the debris had not been picked up. I called to find out when the debris would be removed and was told a production manager would call me back. I haven't been contacted and my husband now wants to dispute the charges as the work was not finished. While I love our fence, it shouldn't be this big of a hassle to deal with customer service. Also, if you give a downpayment, you should be contacted for authorization before further charging your customers credit cards and also ensuring the work is complete. It's disappointing as I would have liked to get playground equipment from fenceworks in the future, but I won't be and can't recommend them. read more

FW business office is not worthwhile to deal with. If you hired them and everything went well, then congrats (same as if you went w/o health insurance and did not get sick). Not my story. The beginning was certainly good: had several contractors come look at old fallen fence, and FW's sales guy was the only one who gave us a detailed quote on the spot with the variety of options that could be added. At the same time he did not have the good sense of not putting his workbag on top of lacquered dining table--minor annoyance but a foreshadowing of the future. We hired them anyway, which was a mistake. After taking the deposit on the fence, the business office did not contact me with the installation info--I had to call them on a Friday and was lucky to find out that the crew would be there Monday morning. Crew came on time, and installed the cedar fence. However, it was shorter (did not cover the full length that needed to be covered) with several chipped boards and 2x4s. Fenceworks re-sent the crew to fix the boards-- sadly, only to the extent we saw at first glance, they made it very clear that only one re-visit would be be made. More chips were found later, but you have to give them that 4 years later fence is still standing. The bigger problem is that they damaged the sprinkler system (requiring expensive repaird), and completely refused to consider any compensation. The experience was more than unpleasant. I can't go into details of the dispute, but the 1-star to the business office is well deserved, in my view. read more

Our neighbors and I decided to replace our backyard fences at the same time. We shopped around and elected to go with Fenceworks to install a 6' traditional style red cedar fence. Our salesman at Fenceworks was Jerry. We've been pleased with the fence overall. The clapboards have have shrunk, so now you don't have complete privacy, something I wish that had been communicated to us at the time of sale. We were told that installation would take place within two to three weeks of contract signing and permitting. We were never notified of a specific date when the fence would be installed, so it was a bit surprising the morning they showed up to install the fence. We communicated with the crew that there was a stump that was scheduled to be removed the following day, and that we would appreciate it if they could return to install that section of the fence at a later date. Instead a second afternoon crew, un-uniformed, unlike the morning crew (I assume sub-contractors), proceeded to install the fence over the stump. They continued to install the fence beyond the hours permitted by our city. When the second crew finished their work, a man repeatedly knocked on the backdoor and demanded payment from a family member. I feel our experience would've been better with a firm that maintained an onsite English-speaking contractor, provided better communication with customers, didn't use subcontractors, and didn't violate city ordinance. Our landscapers broke one of the gate posts inadvertently in the Autumn of 2014. I called the office and Jerry more than a half dozen times trying to schedule an estimate for the repair. I never did receive that estimate. Instead, I did receive a visit where Jerry came demanding payment on behalf of a sub-contractor, that I never interacted with. I consulted another local fencing contractor who provided me an estimate for repair and replaced the gate post the following week. They also used screws on the fence instead of nails for durability. Fenceworks is so unprofessional, disorganized, and all around difficult, I can't understand how they are able to remain in business. Estrada Fences of Evanston ended up doing an excellent job on the repair. I cannot believe the owner or employee's response to my review, nor his response to other reviewers. I have no idea who you are and I stated that I called multiple times. How am I supposed to get in contact with you if I have never heard of you? read more

This family owned business is a gem. Just when you think that customer service doesn't exist anymore, you find a place like The Guy on 41. We have a swing set, basketball hoop, and trampoline from them and we wouldn't think of buying anywhere else. The family that owns and work there cared so much about helping us make the right choices about the equipment we were buying for our family. Specifically on our trampoline, they made sure to take the "super" jump springs off and put them aside for our kids because they were still too young for the "power jumping". They cared about our kids being safe and having fun. There is a reason this company has been around for so many years and it is so wonderful to see that superior customer service as well as the highest quality products on the market is still so important to this wonderful company. I'm definitely not impressed with this company and would not use them again. The sales man doesn't seem to know the practicalities of the installation so what is discussed in the meeting will change when the installer comes. Also, we were promised a temporary gate to keep the dogs in while the gate was being made. Apparently that was just a sweetener to clinch the deal. Once the contract was signed they didn't bother to deliver the temp fence, so we had to make our own. Day of installation 1, they're missing a part, so they take down our temp fence, place the gate in the backyard, with promise of returning tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, no fence installation, but left the temp fence down so dogs were no longer contained. After a call, they come out again, I see the wind blow the fence over, with nicks and scratches on the gate, they didn't intend to fix. After they collect the final payment, I notice one of the gate posts is missing a cap. "Yes, so sorry, we will come back." 1 week later no cap. In other words, they are not professional, I don't recommend them and I regret not shopping around. If you own a business you provide good service. Every time I called he says he was just about to call me. BS! read more

After finding another company that could do the job for less, called them up to cancel the job that was not done at all they charged a 20% restocking fee. Rob the Sales Manager arrived on time and was a pleasure to work with for the estimate. We do not have a typical flat, square yard and the fencing required a lot of finesse to accommodate the changes in grade from one side to the other. Rob made some excellent recommendations and we scheduled the work to be completed within 2 weeks.
