(** Quick summary: For about 5 weeks, I had been having some continuous, unexplained "burning sensation" around my lower throat/voice box area. When it wasn't subsiding, I naturally became more concerned and then made the awful mistake of trying to diagnose myself "online", which only made matters 10x worse. I was a nervous wreck thinking I had something serious. After seeing several of my own doctors who didn't think it was anything of significant magnitude, they referred me to an ENT. Since the issue STILL wasn't subsiding, my worries weren't either. BY CHANCE, I found a quick appointment with Dr. Ksiazek at his Glen Ellyn office.) The entire experience was wonderful. From the time I signed in, I wasn't sitting in the waiting room but maybe 5 minutes when one of the nurses had called me back. I hadn't even made a dent in filling out the few pieces of paperwork. She was very kind and friendly - walked me back to one of the offices to await the doctor. After taking some quick vitals, the nurse said that Dr. Ksiazek would be right in. I am not exaggerating when I say no more than about 1 minute later, Dr. Ksiazek knocks and walks in and introduces himself. I was shocked (in a good way)! I hadn't even parked my car more than 10 minutes earlier and the nurse hadn't walked out more than 2 minutes ago. Perhaps by coincidence it was a very slow period, but still. As mentioned, I felt completely at ease. Dr. Ksiazek was kind, soft-spoken, and had a calming demeanor. He asked me to explain to him what was going on - and I took a few minutes doing so. I told him that after about 5 weeks, I had just worried myself sick trying to figure out what condition I had, and that it wasn't subsiding. Based on what I must have written when I scheduled the appointment (and perhaps reviewing my previous doctor visit notes and records in the system), it almost seemed Dr. Ksiazek had an idea of what was going on with me, but said he would do a scope of my throat to put me at ease. I had never had one of these before, and Dr. Ksiazek explained what it is, how he would do it, and said it was very quick and painless. The entire scope procedure was not at all uncomfortable, and quick - maybe 45 seconds tops. On a scale of 1-10, discomfort was maybe a 1.5. After I sat for about 5 minutes of having numbing spray put in my nose, Dr. Ksiazek ran a scope thru my nose (no pain, and he talked to me calmly as he did everything) and was able to see my throat. Long story short - I had common laryngeal reflux (similar to acid reflux) which had been happening so often it left me with the continuous burning sensation of my throat. I felt like 5 cinder blocks had been lifted off my shoulders. We also addressed my rare laryngeal spasms (feeling of waking up suddenly and not able to catch a breath) which he felt were also related to the reflux condition. I was prescribed some medicine to try, and Dr. Ksiazek told me to message him and just let him know how things were proceeding several weeks later. I left feeling with a huge sense of calm and relief - and all within about a half hour of walking thru the parking lot (Can't beat that! Again, this may be a unique situation just based on that particular day's schedule). I only wish I could have found Dr. Ksiazek sooner. I highly recommend him for any of your ENT needs or for any situation you may be having (ENT related) which may be of concern to you. You can even make some appointments online! Highly recommended, and I would def see Dr. Ksiazek again or refer my family to him!

On my very first visit to Girgis, Dr. Sam spent more than an hour with me. He ordered a CT scan and a full blood panel (turns out I had a deviated septum and low antibody levels for several strains of pneumococcal bacteria, which no doctor had ever told me, or even tested for). Eventually, when we had the results, he patiently went over everything in detail, and recommended surgery. The surgery itself was very smooth and the recovery was straightforward. Two months later, it has been LIFE-CHANGING. I am breathing better and sleeping better. Before the surgery, I generally needed an antihistamine, a decongestant, and a nasal spray every day. I have not taken any of them--not even once--since the surgery. During the entire process, the whole staff--Dr. Sam, the nurses, the receptionists, and the billing department--were kind, patient, and always available to answer questions. Do not waste time going somewhere else. This is the best ENT you will find in the area.

It was very annoying and intrusive. If they can't run their practice efficiently, what else do they do in a mediocre fashion? Well...I was just getting ready to leave my house for my 11:30 appointment and the phone rang. It was their office wondering why I was late for my 10:30 appointment! Apparently, since they were doing two different tests, they set it up as two separate appointments (one at 10:30 and one at 11:30)! What??? Every email and phone call I received was for 11:30, not 10:30. To me it's one practice and one appointment. Whoever is responsible for setting processes and procedures for this practice needs to get their act together. It doesn't matter that the doctors are good. If you can't manage your practice (which ultimately is a business), why should I trust you to manage a segment of my health?

This could have been much worse. Dr. Miller handled it smoothly and answered all of our aftercare questions. The front office was polite although probably a bit disturbed by my very existence. The nerve of me to be breathing the same air as *people* how dare??!! Of course we were an early morning appointment and maybe front office was just not totally enthusiastic about being awake. Ridiculous to pay a hefty charge for a question that the doctor probably took a minute to answer. Didn't receive any notification that this change was taking effect or never would have sent a question. EDIT: I did a Google search and found this: "While most MyChart messages will remain free, replies that require medical expertise and more than five minutes of your provider's time may be billed, as we do for other medical services. If a MyChart message is billable, we will first bill your insurance provider, as we do for all other medical services."

Well, I'm here getting an Electromyography (EMG). An EMG measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve's stimulation of the muscle. The test is used to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities. During the test, one or more small needles (also called electrodes) are inserted through the skin into the muscle. The test sounds worse than it is. Dr. Mercurio was excellent. I'm confident she will help. Our hope is to find out also why my left leg and foot are numb. I'm finished now and look forward to the results.

Every medical facility I've encountered since I've been paying for life on my own (30+ yrs) has a similar policy and oversleeping and knowing taking a congested roadway are all reasons to avoid a doctor? Seriously, yelp, edit out this stuff. A person with a laundry list of complaints that all start with "I messed this up...", "I made a bad choice..." should be weeded out from a fair doctor review. NONE of this has to do with quality of care. As to the mention of rude or impatient staff, I'll bet this was two sided, and by Friday afternoon we're all a little "done" with work. The staff who answer the phone answer for the building, not the doctor (which is VERY clearly mentioned on the phone). The office staff are pleasant, are willing to say "I don't know" then find out, and even found a spot for me when I showed up a week early for my appointment but with an obviously infected ear. Doctor Ortega always takes time to sit and talk to me. He'll explain anything I ask about, whether a procedure or just the process of what he's about to do over and over until I grasp it fully and am comfortable. He's also knowledgeable about medications and has given stellar recommendations to me for a dentist that could make me an affordable nightguard to help with TMJD. The later in the day your appointment, the longer the wait can be, but it's never been too bad. I've seen Doctor Ortega now for nearly a decade and have no complaints. The girl at the appointment desk asked if I would be any more than 15 minutes late, then I would need to reschedule. She never mentioned that if it were a few minutes after that, that I would be charged - a no show fee of $40.00. When I reached the front desk at the doctors office I was told very rudely I might add that I would need to reschedule and that because it was more than 15 minutes late I was considered "a no show". Not once did anyone tell me I would receive a charge of $40.00, nor is the information in any of my emails. Very unethical in my book!

I have had to return to his office many time for check ups on my hearing that I lost with the terrible infection. He was very positive on me getting my hearing back but I was not--After about 6 months it has now all returned!!! He kept me as positive as I could be and treated me like family.
