Six years ago I pretty much walked away from a head-on collision, I consider myself very lucky. My airbag likely saved me from serious injury, but did leave me with a concussion and a deviated septum (not known at the time). The aftereffects of the accident along with some preexisting sinus problems left me with a multitude of problems that got progressively worse: chronic sinus infections, frequent headaches and migraines, severe sinus pain and congestion, trouble concentrating, uncontrolled asthma, sleep issues, and difficulty breathing through my nose. A few years after the accident I had my first ENT visit and the guy didn't do very much to sell me on the idea that this surgery would improve my life, so I passed. It still irks me to know I could have been feeling like a new person long ago. By the time I saw Dr. Kern, my monthly Sudafed requirement rivaled that of a meth dealer. I liked Dr. Kern right off the bat, he's very personable and rather than lead with my surgical options, he first listened to my sinus issues and reviewed nonsurgical options that might work for me. Unfortunately, it only took a brief exam (including cat-scan) to confirm surgery would be my best option if I wanted significant long-term improvement. My surgery had to be delayed one year after I first met with Dr. Kern; my grad school insurance denied my surgery despite being medically necessary (and not cosmetic)! ::shakes angry fist at insurance bastards:: One year later, I had insurance that covered the procedure and was rearing to go under the knife. Not only had my problems worsened 50% in a year, but when you know there's something out there that will make you feel whole again, the waiting can be torture. Dr. Kern is a bit of a stickler, he has a thorough pre and post surgery protocol, which included medicines, vitamins and supplements I had to stop taking 2 weeks before and after surgery. He also required I take a minimum of one week off of work and use a specific brand of OTC sinus rinse to keep the area clean and hydrated. I won't get into details of my procedure, but the surgery was no walk in the park; it knocked me on my ass harder than I anticipated. However, I don't regret it one bit; a week after my surgery the splints, stitches and other stuff were removed and I was giddy that I could actually breathe through my nose. It's been nearly three months and I have had almost no sinus pressure or pain, headaches, and my asthma is more controlled than it's been in 6 years. I've also only taken about 8 of those little red magic pills in the last 3 months, pre-surgery that was more like a daily dose, and my Kleenex usage has dropped off considerably (sorry Kimberly-Clark). Both of my post op visits have confirmed that my surgery went beautifully; I wouldn't hesitate to refer anyone with sinus issues to Dr. Kern, he and his staff are amazing.

First, my appointment was delayed by 40 minutes; I can somewhat understand that part. Once I got to the consultation room, his assistant was in so much hurry for whatever reason. She jot down some notes and left the room. Then the Dr. arrived and though pleasant, was also in a rush. After literally a few seconds of my nasal passage examination, he said that he can't send everyone who walked in for an MRI. He prescribed me a "Nasal Spray for ALLERGIES" and advised to see the Head Pain Department at NW Hospital. After years of sinus issues, yup I needed to go see a specialist to get an Allergy Spray! I'm so regretting spending my hard earned $ for this Dr. Altogether the impression I got: Both of them wanted to get rid of me ASAP. My presence felt like a waste of their time and a burden to them. Again, I do not know why!

I pay my co-pay at each visit and even make an extra payment, when I can. They continue to badger me at the front desk about my balance at every visit. I explain that I'm on a plan and make payments and they still hand me an itemized billing statements and request more. This is the only drawback to this office. Dr. Ditto has everything you want in a physician. First and foremost, she is knowledgeable and takes advantage of new technologies. For example, notes and prescriptions are typed on a computer. You even get a printout to take home, summarizing what was discussed and what took place during the visit. Dr. Ditto trains resident doctors, so they really take the time to be thorough. I have never felt hurried by Dr. Ditto; she takes time to answer my questions and explain the benefits and disadvantages of various treatment options. Having been to a handful of other allergists, Dr. Ditto was the first one who correctly identified my problem, successfully treated it, and had the bedside manner to go with it. I hope this helps.

I wasted my time and money and still have no idea what to do about my symptoms. Look elsewhere. Terrible. And I left out the part about the garbage smelling storage room they put me in to administer a breathing test because they didn't have a room for me.

I genuinely do think making my voice heard on this place (ha, vocal institute, get it?) is what can even the karmic scales a bit, and hopefully will be enough a push to get the office staff to reflect on their behavior. To try and briefly describe the situation, I had told the office staff from day 1 that I'd be footing every bill as my insurance didn't cover anything. And from day 1, this was executed as planned! I paid everything on time as it was presented to me. After my necessary treatment there, it was confirmed to me that I had nothing else to pay off - what a joy! December of last year, I receive a $1 bill in the mail from them. Assuming it's a clerical error, I bin it. I then get a call informing me a surprise $900 bill is going to collections. Having never been late on a single bill (and again having confirmed everything was paid off), I of course was pretty surprised and upset. Turns out, they'd tried...billing my insurance? And didn't hear back for months? And the claim was (as expected) denied, but they couldn't be bothered to send the bill in the mail, call me, or email me about this? I have a feeling they're padding their bottom line assuming you'll pay anything off. After all, who wants their credit ruined by having a bill sent to collections? Perhaps most people who come here have enough money where they wouldn't blink at such a bill? In any case, even if what they're saying is 100% true, it's pretty unbelievable they wouldn't own up to any aspect of the mistake, give more time to pay off the bill before sending to collections, or have an ounce of accountability or empathy in this situation. Even a simple "we made a mistake, I'm sorry" would have sufficed! Kyle and Sandra specifically were obstinate and overtly hostile. Kyle has clearly worked here for a long time, and part of me wonders if they're aware of the racket he's pulling and that's what makes him such a valuable employee. Anyways, Dr. Rebecca Hoesli is the most intelligent, understanding, holistic doctor I've ever experienced. Her care was absolutely peak, and I wish her the best in her career. She helped me understand my condition and the options moving forward, and I'm able to work again because of her. I'm sorry that she works here.
