I came into Fern Flowers near Symphony looking for flowers for my girlfriend's college graduation after several female friends recommended the shop to me. I had about a $100 budget and was genuinely excited to support a local business, even after a very long day. What disappointed me was the service. I waited around 15 minutes without ever being acknowledged or welcomed, while other customers who came in after me were greeted right away. Then, when it was finally my turn to be helped, another customer who had just walked in stepped in front of me and was immediately assisted by staff without anyone correcting it. Whether intentional or not, the entire interaction made me feel unwelcome and ignored. I walked in ready to spend good money on flowers for an important occasion and left feeling embarrassed instead. Based on my experience, I wouldn't return or recommend this shop. read more

The selection of plants here is lovely and they're offered at decent prices. I'm basing my review on two service-related experiences: 1. In May 2021, I bought a Calathea plant (see image). Before making my purchase, I asked the sales clerk about its care to make sure I could keep it alive. I was told it was a pretty easy indoor plant so I went ahead and bought it. At home I gave it bright indirect light and humity but it died 2 weeks later. I later learned that Calatheas, though pretty and fun (they have a daily prayer hand motion as they open and close their leaves), are not beginner plants whatsoever. 2. About 4 weeks ago I went in hoping to place an order for a bridal style bouquet for a photoshoot. I checked the flowers they had in stock that day and had a lengthy conversation with the sales clerk who wrote down details for my order. I followed up afterward via email with images of my vision. A week before pickup I replied to my previous email with updates on what I wanted the bouquet to look like. I included text and images. I did not recieve any replies from them. The morning of my pickup, I was disappointed to see that they didn't follow instructions for my updates at all. I was told, "We didn't have those flowers." I had a gut feeling that I should've called to confirm with them agead of time, but to ensure customer satisfaction, they could have at the very least called me to let me know they couldn't fulfill my request. I was livid at pickup particularly because I saw they had palm leaves that they could've used to create something much closer to what I wanted. I didn't complain while I was in the store because I had to rush to my photoshoot. Attached are images of the updated bouquet I wanted and the actual bouquet I received. The initial bouquet was orange and blue, the updated bouquet was supposed to be red and orange. VERY POOR AND UNPROFESSIONAL SERVICE FROM THE OWNER. I would never use this florist. I would like to say it's because of the type of flowers, or type of arrangement. But unfortunately, I have to say it's because of the owner himself. We live out of state, so I had some questions to ask about the bouquet arrangement, and the distance to the school we wanted to have delivered to a student once a week. He had no patience at all, I asked if the arrangement could be placed in a bag, he sounded irritated then he said "I GOTTA GO" and immediately hung up. I'm not located in the Boston area, so I found this florist on Yelp to deliver flowers to a friend in Somerville. Unfortunately, I had a few issues with their online ordering system. I ordered the "Any Occasion 002", which was described and pictured as an arrangement of tulips. There was a note during the order process that a $15 delivery charge would be added, which was fine with me. However, I later received a call informing me that the delivery charge was actually $20. While this wasn't a huge difference, I wish they had been upfront about it when I was comparing delivery prices with other florists. During that call, I also decided to confirm the arrangement I was ordering--only to be surprised when they told me they didn't have tulips in stock or in season. I gave them approval to use other flowers, specifying a few colors to include and avoid. While the final arrangement was beautiful, it was still not what I expected when I placed the order. I'm glad I asked about the tulips when they called to inform me of the higher delivery charge because if I hadn't, I would have had no say over what they ended up delivering. Fern is wonderful! I have been going here for the past couple years for special occasion flowers and they are always so beautiful! They have a lovely cute selection of different flowers so I usually just go in and pick some of my favorites I think may look good together, and ask an employee for recommendations on how to make it look nice. Everyone is very kind there and I am always so happy with how the arrangements come out. Attached is a photo of the most recent arrangement I bought from them for my sister's birthday! Stunning. I picked some of the main flowers out and they filled it in with nice filler flowers and made suggestions on complementary colored flowers to improve it. Very helpful! Called up here for flowers for a new baby my friends had. Explained what I was thinking and they came through. What is great about this place is that they use lots of different textures and types of add-in flowers that the other places don't use. If you need flowers, go here and not Winston's if you can. Winston's is fine but you're paying for a name brand but without the variety or the beauty. I've purchased several bouquets during COVID and Fern is a going to be your best bet for Boston proper. I was at this lovely florist on Thursday 1/11/24 and it was a great experience. I work till 6 and most flower shops are closed by then. I randomly wanted to get my Fiancée some flowers and they were the only shop open in the Boston area. It was simply beautiful in the shop. So nicely curated; not just a bunch of flowers in fridges. The best part was the staff. They were extremely nice and friendly. They shared stories of other customers coming in late and buying flowers for various reasons, good or bad, lol. Needed flowers last minute and told the young girl that there CANNOT be white flowers. She didn't write this down so when I went to pick them up the next day, a different woman had used white flowers... an extra star for her kindness in trying to fix the issue on the spot; however several issues after that: 1. The new flowers she used were extremely dirty so I had to go home and clean them myself, 2. The bouquet is very lopsided (see photo), 3. The reference I used was much much bigger, more full and beautiful than this one so I don't think this was worth $100. Not even sure it's worth $50 at most for the incorrect order, lopsidedness, dirty flowers I myself had to clean. Pretty disappointed in this experience especially since it was for my mom's birthday, but the staff are friendly, so perhaps I will try again. read more

My wife and I went in to get flowers. Once we walked in, none of the 3 employees standing at front greeted us. As we started looking around, none of the same 3 employees walked over to ask questions or assist in any manner. After my wife and I picked flowers out, maybe 10 minutes or so, we went to pay. The 3 employees were at the front discussing music and ipad login and took a minute or so to realize we were there. As we paid, i wandered off to look at section that said "employees only" with some fresh roses. I asked if they were for sale and was told by lady checking out "i have to process them which will take a couple of minutes" and the most frustrating part of our experience, the lady doing the books with glasses pointing to the floor on her nose, told me "everything that's over there is already out on the floor." Beyond rude given the roses "on the floor" blossomed days ago... We were so eager to get out there we took the flowers immediately and didn't realize one stem was broken in one of the bouquets and one in another (photos attached). Purchased 3 bulbous red roses and a few accompanying fern stems for Valentine's Day 2023, needless to say the flowers looked very nice but around 30 mins after purchase I noticed that they smelled like a rotting fish in the hot summer sun. I had several friends also smell them and they confirmed the putrid scent. I tried getting into contact with the store by calling but never received a response. When paying a premium for flowers I'd at least expect the flowers to not smell like a corpse. Nothing against the workers they were all lovely just disappointing that this occurred. read more

They're always fresh & vibrant whenever I get them from here-- whether it's deciding on how to arrange them myself in person w/ a bit of help, or having them decide for me from a phone call & then picking up the order later. Horrible, horrible experience. My boyfriend sent me blue roses that he bought online but what was sent not only looked nothing like the picture, it looked like something that had died - pretty roses overwhelmed by dead looking "greenery". The filler looked like seaweed and included dried cattail weeds. I called and spoke to Liz, the store manager, who was a striking example of some of the worst customer service I have ever received. I called almost humored because the arrangement was that...different and compared to other arrangements I've gotten, were seemingly off base from what my boyfriend would have picked. Liz told me she was out of regular greenery so she used the "filler" they had on hand - seaweed-looking Japanese eucalyptus and dead cattails. She was presumably personally offended - she told me she had made it herself and said that if I wasn't happy with the arrangement, I could take the seaweed-looking filler and dried cattail weeds out of it myself. No offer to remake the arrangement or provide a credit/refund. I asked to speak with the owner, who I was told was out of town in a shrill and defensive tone. Finally, I asked if she could remake it, because it was an expensive arrangement and she told me NO. The best she could do was to have the driver come over, pick the ugly filler out in front of me, and return a vase with just the roses to me if I wasn't going to pick it out myself. These flowers were sent as a nice surprise, commemorating the end of a horrible month and the customer service I received from Liz, the manager of this flower shop, ruined my day. read more

Everytime I have bought flowers from here they are absolutely beautiful but die within a week (even if I cut the stems and change the water or use distilled water). I bought a calathea plant from here and i put it on my window. My window overlooks an alley and needless to say it barely gets sunlight. It died in less than a month and when I asked for a replacement they refused. I will be taking my business to True Value and Whole Foods whose plants last wayyyyyy longer in my recent experience. read more
