So, to be honest, I almost changed my mind at the last minute. This restaurant is in a little sketchy part of town. It doesn't help that it is not very well lit and that you are not sure where the entrance of the building is. I definitely power walked from my car to the resutrant to realize that I was at the club, to turn around and Power walk to the other building. Overall, the food was really good. When you first look at the menu, you might think that it is really expensive, but when the food comes out, it's worth it. That staff was extremely nice and very organized. The only other draw back is trying to open the doors to get in and out of the restaurant. There is a strong wind tunnel which vacuums seals the doors shut. This place used to be great for rodizio with the reasonable price including salad bar, dessert and coffee. We went there yesterday and paid about $100 per person. FYI, we ordered three pitchers of sangria, two bottles of water and one bottle of Pellegrino. I don't know if I would go back there with the current price structure. Celebrated my brother Tony's 67th birthday at one of my favorite Spanish/Portuguese/Brazilian restaurants, Fernandes Steak House on Fleming Avenue in Newark. I say one of my favorites because the food and service is always excellent and I've never had a bad time or a bad meal there. It was a Saturday evening so the place was mobbed, as expected. The only complaint I would have was that this is a valet only parking lot and there was a line, and a wait, before I could get into the restaurant. A minor complaint, but a complaint. Once inside we were quickly taken to our reserved table which was set up beautifully. Our waiter could not have been more friendly or efficient and had a great sense of humor. Despite the crowd I never felt like we were rushed or that the servers were too busy to take care of us. A big plus! I've been here many times before but I should mention that the brick walls, wood ceilings nice decor and cozy ambiance all add to an enjoyable dining experience. We started with some appetizers including Burrata, Camarao Ao Alho (Shrimp in Garlic Sauce), Chourico Assado (BBQ Portuguese Sausage), along with some well loaded Sangria. I should mention there is also a nice salad bar that comes along with your meal at no additional cost. I passed on that as I didn't want to fill up before my meal. I ordered the"Filetes a Portuguesa" (boiled filet of sole stuffed with crab meat). Delicious! 3 large pieces of filet of sole with vegies, rice and Spanish Potatoes. Nice size portions here, you won't leave hungry. Others at our table had the "Triologia Do Mar Fra Diablo", "Paella de Mariscos" (Seafood Paella), "Rodizio" (Churrascaria-Portuguese BBQ), and "Porterhouse Steak" cooked on a Tile at the table. No argument that the food and the desserts were outstanding. Fernandes is a very popular and great restaurant and, as they say, you get what you pay for, it's not a cheap night out. If you don't mind paying a little more for a great meal and nice ambiance this is a place you should try, if you haven't already. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention they have a nice bar located on the first floor of the restaurant if you should get there early or would just like to sit and eat at the bar. Came here for a work lunch. I didnt like the food. It took really long to come out as well. It was a party of 8. I got salmon. It was so dry and had no flavor. Its like they used water as seasoning. It was a dry grilled salmon with boiled potatoes and veggies. It needed some type of sauce or something. The garlic sauce wasn't good to me either. Others didnt enjoy their food as much as the "hype" was about the restaurant. The waiters were nice and attentive and the drinks where strong. This is a staple in our house, for birthdays, get togethers and ofcourse our annual trip to see the cherry blossoms. It's the best Rodizio I've ever had, and I've only had rodizio there. But others in my party have had main dishes and only compliments. The red sangria -yum-get a pitcher haha! The restaurant itself is very beautiful, thoughtfully designed. They usually have valet parking but this past time we went during covid and didn't see anyone , which is fine, they have a nice decent sized parking lot. Very disappointed in almost everything. I have been waiting to go to a nice Portuguese restaurant for so long and this place has good reviews both on Yelp and google. The food portion is too big. All of the meats are very over cooked and very chewy, I had to spit out of the steak, the beef wrapped in bacon was like a rock I couldn't even cut through. It's paired with tastes like grocery frozen Fries. Sadly the Steamed vegetable with no taste is the best one on the plate. The Ironbound section of Newark is always fun to check out. The authenticity of the restaurants is what I love and you can't beat the Portuguese food here. I don't know many of the names of the dishes I ate but everything was nicely done. They have massive portions so make sure to come hungry! The entrees are huge and I got three huge pieces of chicken with my entree. The entree was also served with fried potatoes and rice on the side. I ordered the shrimp appetizer and the sausages as well and both hit the spot. They also had an antipasto type appetizer which was surprising since I thought that was more italian. Still good though. This is a big place too so they have plenty of space for parties and all sorts of groups. The sangria and caprinha's are also the jam here and that makes the experience even better. read more

Went to Fernandez about a year ago with some friends for dinner and thought it was quite good, so when I heard we would be having a business dinner there I was really stoked. Mentioned it to a friend of mine who said he had been there a couple of times recently and that they had gone downhill. I didn't believe it so with great optimism I headed over there only to find that my friend had been correct. To make matters worse, he was sitting next to me and was all too enthusiastic to point it out during the duration of the meal. Let's start with the valet parking. The regular lot was full so we were directed into a dirty and someone ramshackle garage across the street. Friends, the purpose of valet parking is to make your journey from car to restaurant as painless as possible. Forcing us to drive across the street into a building that looked like Jason could jump out with a butcher knife at any time really defeated the whole valet experience. As far as I was concerned I didn't care where they parked my car once I got out of it but I should have been able to do so in front of the restaurant without having to cross a busy street and walk into a dark, filthy warehouse. Once inside we were presented with a plate of fried mystery whatever. I was able to make out a clam or two and perhaps a mozzarella stick but the rest shall forever remain unknown as I was hesitant to partake. We were also given a platter of chorizo which wasn't cooked as well as it should have been and some bread that was awesome. Speaking of awesome, they also served sangria which was really the best part of the meal. Rodizio was dry and over cooked. Fries were soggy and tasteless. When we mentioned it to our waiter what he brought out looked like it could have mooed when sliced. Dessert was marginally better. I have no idea why the food scene in the Ironbound has fallen so far in such a short period of time. I had a similar experience at Iberia recently after years of outstanding consistency. Maybe in an attempt to stabilize prices they downgraded the quality of their food. Personally, I would prefer to pay more and be happy than save a few bucks and be disappointed. Next stop....Fornos. Will let you know how that pans out. If it doesn't, I will most likely stay closer to home next time I want Portuguese. So I'm going to India, a land void of good beef. It was decided I would be feasting on the flesh of a cow before leaving. Fernandes is a bit off the main drag of the Ironbound section of Newark, but as we drove past, the smell of the grilled meats within passed through the car and tickled our senses. Parking is easy. They have a private lot. The restaurant itself could be described as rustic. The complex has an old school feel, it would be appropriate to decorate the place with the heads of trophy animals. Meal started with some blue sangria, and for sangria, it was pretty strong. Ordered the rodizio, and it was amazing. Best rodizio I've had thus far. Did not bother with the sides or the salad bar. Stand outs were the flank steak and top sirloin, but everything else was pretty good. Things I did not really like were the sausage, ham, and chicken hearts. Sausage and ham were meh. Chicken hearts were marinated in something I did not particularly like. Service was excellent. Meat after meat just kept coming. Dining partner could not keep up with them. Once they slowed down, they were happy to bring whatever items I asked for. Dessert was a whole other meal. Lava cake, red velvet cake, and tartufo were all good, but I found nothing to be particularly amazing. Generous portions though. In all, a proper send off for me before my trip. Fernandes is known to everyone in the Ironbound, and this is really a top place you should definitely hit up if you plan on being in the area. Since I'm lucky enough to work close by, it's a great place for us to recommend to auditors and visitors alike. The overall charm of the place is the raw brick walls in and around the restaurant. There's Portuguese pride hanging on the walls and represented in the suit of armor that greets you when you first walk in, to other artifacts. We were a party of five when we dined in early February on a Wednesday night. Service is really top notch, and the menu is vast and tempting. There hasn't been a time we've ordered something that we didn't like, and this time was of no exception either. We started off with some chorizo that was cut up into strips, with some picked cauliflower, carrots, broccoli and olives. This dish needs to be shared due to the saltiness of the sausage; it's wonderful, but share so you don't have high blood pressure. We also got an order of shrimps in garlic (a staple and a MUST) which was plentiful. The shrimps were cooked perfectly and snapped when you bit into them- delightful. My entree of choice was a piece of filet mignon with a mushroom sauce, with Spanish chips and dirty rice. There was no room for veggies on this plate, and I really couldn't care less. The only shame was that after the appetizers and being on my third glass of Sangria, I couldn't finish my entree! Holy great Rodizio. You come here for the Rodizio. Waiters walk around with large skewers of meat and you keep eating until you tell them no more. Before throwing in the towel and telling them no more, you have to ask for the chicken hearts. They are a hidden secret that the waiters will not bring unless you ask for them. After the chicken hearts, settle your stomach with some grilled pineapple. Tis is a great place for large parties. A table next to ours got a plate of sizzling chorizo for an appetizer. it looked and smelled incredible. Remember, there is no need to order an appetizer if you are going with the Rodizio. We frequently talk about lobster among other foods and he said I should try this place. I still walk in and after opening and walking through about 4 or 5 doors, we arrive in a dining room that has maybe about 2-3 other guests sitting at their tables. I'm immediately thinking, where did this guy send us? It's probably going to be terrible! Lol It gave me Italian mob meet up place feels lol...No but seriously! So we take our seats, look over the menu (which was very affordable by the way if you're comparing with California pricing). We order and grab salads from the mini salad bar adjacent to our table. Best salad I've had in AWHILE. It tasted like all of the elements of my salad were from such fresh quality products. The servers were very helpful. I dropped a couple of tomatoes while placing them on my place and was slightly embarrassed but they were so nice about it. Fast forward to halfway through my salad, I look up and it seems as if every table around the dining room had been filled. People were on dates, after work co worker dinners, I mean the place was packed! I figured we arrived at the perfect time. I had no idea this place would fill up like this! The food arrives!!! I ordered the Seafood Pallea, my friend ordered the baby back ribs with a side of yellow rice, veggies and mashed potatoes and my other friend ordered a steak with a side of yellow rice and veggies......Can you say huge portions of food! When to Fernandes to celebrate birthday of a friend on 4/30/22.There were 6 of us. The service was definitely bad. We were on the 2nd floor. Requested water and it didn't arrived until we were almost finished without meal. I had to send back my food as it was luke warm. The appetizers were also warm. Only 1 meal was serve hot. Two ordered Rodizio and they had to wait about 15 minutes before they were served meat. Of course, by now the sides are cold. Another member ordered Ribeye and took it home to finishing cooking it. Things have changed there and for the worst. I have been there about 5 times and the service/food was excellent. Not sure what happened but it will be a long time before I return. What pissed me off the most was the bill which was $477.68. The waiter was horrible and the food was a cold mess. I didn't want to leave a tip, but my friends prevailed and we left tip for $70.65. Came here last week in a group of 7 for rodizio. The food was great with a variety of options, multiple rounds of meat. The service was good. We had the red sangria which was tasty. They salad bar included was minimal comparing to other rodizio places in that area. Unless you are for the salad bar, the meat was great, various cuts of steak, chicken, pork, chicken heart and of course the pineapple at the end. The bread was served warm but no pao de queso lime some other places. Overall we enjoyed it, did not bring the kids but imagine it would be fine. Great place to go get amazing food during the week. I wouldn't recommend to come here on a weekend. The venue is just way too busy and the staff cannot give you a very good experience due to the rush they receive. I say definitely try the white sangria it's pretty strong and tasted fresh. It doesn't matter if you make reservations they will seat you earlier/later if they have the availability. This place is very busy so it can be very good for business but would deter me from coming back depending on if I come and wait 20 mins to have all you can eat meats and there's a bit of disconnect. read more

I don't really want to have the variety of meats but just one well cut well prepared steak. Fernandes is old type staple to the ironbound of Newark. I'd recommend it as a place to grab a bite to eat before or after an event at red Bull arena, prudential center, or nj pac. Food: 3 stars, they have a large menu almost similar to the diner style menu. Large selection of meats, fish and poultry dishes. I find the quality of their food to be around the median when compared to surrounding Iberian restaurants in the area. For instance, my sautéed pork filets, while having a magnificent presentation was overcooked hard and rubbery. It was drenched in Iberian gravy which tastes wonderful but I believe tries to hide the flaws in their cooking. They have also inflated their prices by at least 40 percent since the revitalization of Newark without improving the quality of their food. So go figure. Decor: 2.5 stars, Fernandes has a European spanish decor. The first floor has a tavern style feel while the second floor has a more European village feel with views of the kitchen roasting rodizio and a self serve salad buffet. So my biggest complaint here is that the second floor is an oven. It is uncomfortably hot upstairs. Service: 2.5 stars, the service is sort of mayhem here with waiters swarming around trying to take care as many tables as possible and no structure. Very similar to other restaurants in the ironbound. This leads to slow service when place food or drink orders. read more

My wife and I flew into Newark on our way to an anniversary trip and were staying overnight before a morning flight. I asked for a recommendation and a coworker raved about Fernandes Steak House. He was right. The steak and seafood are wonderful. The drinks, appetizers and service were also excellent. I want to start off by saying the people here are great - everyone from the servers to the hosts are friendly and quick to help. I'm giving this poor review because of the quality of the food and the presentation, also the ambience. Ok let's backtrack. First of all I am like the Gordon Ramsay of Yelp reviewers. I have only given 5 stars once and I regret it to this day (the place definitely deserved 4) but following the one bite everyone knows the rules guidelines, you can't take back your rating. It's what you feel in the moment when you press the stars. There was a reason you felt that way in that moment, take that feeling and run with it. Anyway, I think we have to consider 5 stars to be for our favorite restaurants in the world - like the romantic 100th floor city view places where we make memories (future husband and I have one of those) and places where you just vibe with the staff so they know exactly when you want more water and exactly when you don't, even if, in both scenarios, your glass was filled to the same point. This place gets 2 stars. Firstly it's in Newark, hard to set the ambience there but definitely a nice(r) getaway from the dirty street. But it didn't feel like I was totally free of potential diseases when I walked in, and when I'm in Newark, I want to feel that way. I want the interior of the restaurant to make me feel like I'm not in Newark. The bread isn't warm it could be. They could have real whipped butter, they don't, they have butter packets. Every girl loves butter packets. When she's tipsy she secretly uses one packet per bite of bread and then asks for more to which future husband will say, "didn't you just have one?" And you say, "no, where?" The sangria, which I didn't order but obviously sampled, was very brandy heavy. I'm sure it's popular because people say, "aw man we got to get the sangria there, it's great!" And that is because it fucks ya up. But sangria should be proportional in taste. I felt like I was drinking brandy with liquid candy and the color is questionable too. Like do they use food dye packets? we already know they like packets, hence the butter packets, so I wouldn't be surprised. The salad bar, which people rave about for some reason, could really use some sprucing up. I didn't bring my phone over there to take pics because I was walking in heels and carrying one thing, like a small ass plate of lettuce, in one hand plus walking in heels involves my devoted concentration. Also, why are these salad plates so small? I could fit precisely 6 pieces of lettuce and definitely not those big chunks of iceberg. For anyone who drank a full pitcher of the sangria, ate all that meat, and started off the night with tuna potato salad, how did that not repeat on you? Disturbing: the fact that there is only thick orange French dressing and a very oily Italian to choose from. Sure you could use the olive oil and balsamic or red wine vinegar that they have sitting atop the salad bar, but that would mean that you'd have to bring your eye level to the shredded Parmesan sitting next to a plate of rock salt, to which future husband raised his eye brows. "Where's the mozzarella and proccuito?" I had to remind him this wasn't an Italian restaurant. But I kind of silently agreed and moved along. The skinny spicy margarita they attempted to make me was a margarita. These guys called it skinny because there was no salt. It wasn't great. I ordered the paella, because I'm off my grind when it comes to devouring animals. Future husband his brother and brother's gf got the rodizio. Naturally I stole their pineapple. Pineapple was ok but not best pineapple I ever had. Took a few nibbles of their meat which is illegal at this place and was not impressed. It ranged from dry to sub par. They RAVE about a full lobster being in the paella. Half that lobster is its green poopy, which they fail to mention on the menu. Everything was just ok. The tiramisu was just ok. It didn't strike my fancy. Espresso was good but how do you screw up espresso? Also let me just bring it full circle here and get back to the ambience before I exit. there were so many little red dresses here that these girls wanted white tablecloths. They wanted a show. They didn't want their table on top of somebody else's, and they wanted fresh mozzarella on their salad. read more
