I recently stopped in for lunch and ordered the breaded sirloin with potato salad as the lunch special. The meal was delicious, and everything was cooked really well. They also brought out three different types of bread with butter and olives while I waited, which was a nice touch. The restaurant itself was very clean, spacious, and had plenty of seating available. My server was friendly, attentive, and the service was very fast. My only downside was the pricing. Even the lunch specials felt a bit expensive, and I wish there were more budget-friendly options overall. A pleasant group outing in the Ironbound with a few notable findings. * This place is upscale, but in the middle of nowhere, relatively speaking. There are residences adjacent, industry across the street, and nothing screams "upscale" about the neighborhood. * There are no small portions, and there are no small prices. You will pay a lot here. You will get a lot, and it will be good, but be ready. Our arrival was leisurely, to say the least. We were seated promptly and served olives, followed by the rustic bread they are paired with, and then oil to paint the bread. These should all have come out together. The bread came in three varieties: soft fresh sourdough, wheat, and slices that were rather sweet. And any time the bread was finished, more bread came out. But for some reason, the menus did not. It took an unusually long time for the menus - meanwhile, the drink menus were on the table the moment we sat down... And then when we were not quite ready to order, they left us alone for a long time before we motioned for them to get our order. And then it took a long time for food to arrive, though with 12 people that's understandable. At the best restaurants, they'll get a few waiters to bring all 12 dishes at once. Ours arrived a few at a time, but at least in succession so that no one person (me being last) waited for minutes beyond the others. I had the grilled octopus special. It was very tasty, cooked well, with a great grilled flavor but rather over-oiled. Others got gigantic paellas and every one of them took at least half home to go. For those prices, you'd better get at least two meals out of it! * So, the last and most notable finding: Beware of deceit. We ordered two sangria pitchers. They asked for our third one, but then just brought a fourth to the table and started refilling glasses without even asking anyone. I do not believe that was comped, but that's not my department. They asked if people wanted water, and then started filling our water glasses with artisan bottled water. They were happy to keep our water refilled, and I guarantee those were also on our bill. Verdict: You have three choices. Either arrive here with someone who will stay sober and mindful of what is being brought to the table; arrive here as a group with cost-no-object and drink, enjoy, pay whatever they charge you; or skip. Because getting food to-go here seems to miss the point of the atmosphere and the experience. I was in the second of the three choices, and I'm capable of the first, but I won't blame you for choosing to go elsewhere and get Portuguese food at a fairer value. read more

We had steak with Gorgonzola, a whole chicken, lamb chops chicken wings, grilled octopus salad, and a tuna appetizer The layout of this place is rather nice. It has bar seating, private restaurant, seating general restaurant seating around the bar and even outdoor seating the restrooms leave a bit to be desired near the bar. There is a second set of restroom in the restaurant area that are much nicer. Unfortunately, the server we had may have been new typically, they are pretty good. This young man kept forgetting stuff and was not very attentive. It was a bit disappointed, but I've been here before so it will not discourage me. Campino is a hidden gem. Driving into the neighborhood we weren't sure if we were going the right way. However the homes and warehouses opened up to a parking lot and lit up restaurant. The service was excellent and friendly. We ordered 2 plates of calamari for our party of 8 and the waitress came back to tell us that it might be too much and recommended just 1 - never had that happen before! She was right though. Every dish was rich in flavor and well crafted. The calamari and octopus was tender lightly battered. A few of us had fish and it wasn't dry or overcooked just properly prepared and flavorful. Two people got the picadillo which I generally love when you order from the local Portuguese BBQ places but here- it wasn't flavorful and the meat cubes were too large. Another got the lobster and filet mignon and he loved it . Dessert. I tried the "Coppa 3 chocolates" and it was yummy! If you like hazelnut then get this. This review is based on probably their busiest day of the year. Though I would not mention the wait we had to endure for our food, service, drinks, or water. I will give this place another chance on another day. Just due to the fact that the food was pretty decent. However on the busiest day of the year the service was absolutely crazy. Our waitress was overwork we found a metal item in our food and we had to return the paella. It was a crazy crazy night. so much so a couple next to us walked out after sitting down and waiting for their drinks for more than 20 minutes. The sangria was strong and tasty and that was always a plus. I had the campino trio which consists of a filet mignon, shrimp, and chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Besides the fact that my steak came out well done and I asked for medium everything else was quite tasty. The paella before the discovery of the metal object was decent however the rice was still undercooked. Nothing ruins a paella like under cook rice. they followed covid-19 protocols as all staff were wearing mask and tables were separated by at least 6 ft. Definitely a local restaurant which has a big full bar plus large dining area. Great for large groups. The few times that I have been here I sit at the bar. They offer complimentary olives. They have a really great menu. I absolutely love their shell steak topped with a sunny side up egg, with thin sliced fried potatoes like a hearty potato chip in a delicious garlic sauce. I get mine cooked medium rare more on the rare side and its has always been cooked perfectly for me. I love that first bite where you take a potato to scoop up a piece of steak and egg with the garlic sauce. They have a great staff and especially the bartenders they are really friendly. When I am not sure what to have they have given me great recommendations. This place can get very lively there are locals who do stop here after work and its a very friendly atmosphere. This is an amazing restaurant for its excellent service, great quality and recipe execution--relative to every other restaurant in the Ironbound section of Newark. This still says a lot considering there are many very good restaurants in Ironbound. I started with a grilled prawn dish and a separate grilled octopus plate. Both were excellent. I loved the spices on the prawns, tasty but not very hot. For those of you that are extra sensitive to heat permit me to warn you that most people I know find as very spicy the things that I consider to be mild. For the entree I chose a large pot of fish stew composed of a variety of fish cooked in a light white fish broth with vegetables. Dessert was a traditional Portuguese cream in a cup with fruit compote. There was a wafter at the base and together it made for a scrumptious conclusion to an extraordinary meal. Throughout the meal I enjoyed a yumilicious and reasonably priced Portuguese wine called Quinta dos Carvalhais, Encruzado Do 2016. I have brought numerous Newark area customers here for business lunches. This is by far one of my favorite places in Newark. The grilled octopus is amazing. Our usual bites are the garlic shrimp app, the flaming sausage app, whole red snapper, sirloin steak with over easy egg, any meal with octopus. The service is amazing and friendly. I came here with two friends. They have a parking lot. The restaurant is very spacious inside. We had reservations and were seated right away at our reserved table. They were under staffed with waiters for Valentine's Day. It took some time for the waiter to take our drink and appetizer order. Then our appetizer came out before the drinks. Once our food came out, we can tell it was sitting for a while because it was not hot. We did feel bad our waitress b/c she had so many tables to attend to. It also took some time for our check to come when we requested it. We had to wave her down to come pick up the bill. Everyone's food was delicious and flavorful, we did not have complaints about the food and drinks. We wished there were more attentive or better staffed. Celebrated my co-worker's 6 month anniversary with our company by coming here on his request yesterday for lunch. Conveniently located by our facility, it's great to come here for an awesome Portuguese lunch and then return to work all within an hour. Their parking lot was pretty packed when we got here at 12:30PM, but we got a spot on the street almost directly in front of the place. From the outside, it looks like an old tavern, with a patio area outside that I'm sure was packed for the summer. There's a handicap ramp for those with special needs, which is always very accommodating. The ceilings and walls of the space are rustic, with exposed brick and wooden beams. The wait staff is alert and eager to please; another plus. We started with their shrimps in garlic sauce, which has become a staple. My coworker got their pulled pork sandwich, and I got the Portuguese steak sandwich. Both orders came with a HUGE portion of fries; way too much for one person. My steak was thinly sliced, and the roll was toasted with thin garlic slices wedged into it. Under the thin slices of steak, there was cottage ham, and then on top was a fried egg. I couldn't pick the sandwich up, so I had to fork and knife it. Our overall experience was nothing short of our last - which was perfect. The food is just wonderful, and wouldn't mind working my way through the menu for that matter. We ordered the calamari to start and the ox-tail stew, branzino, and stuffed salmon as entrees. The service was quick and the staff were friendly - they seemed to really care for the guests' comfort and satisfaction. The calamari was a great start to the meal - generous portions and very flavorful. The entrees were fantastic - again, incredibly flavorful with large portions. Campino is a fairly large place with a nice big menu so lots of choice. I liked the daily specials which was also extensive. Fairly well known Portuguese dishes here, nicely done. Inside the space is a large room and good looking bar. They also have a good size outdoor area next to the parking lot. Couldn't be more casual here with lots of families on a Saturday night but comfortable place to have dinner and just enjoy. Quality of their ingredients seems good, many of the fish on display when you walk in. We shared apps and entree - Pork with clams and shrimp. Served with some uniquely seasoned mashed potatoes. Very tasty and amp. Octopus app wasn't that great tho, boiled octo with some paprica. Not terrible but plain-Jane. Disappointed with their commercial dessert list of factory made things. They did have "home made" desserts. We tried cheese cake with berry sauce. Again, not terrible but not that great but the sauce with it clearly canned or packaged and barely edible. What a fantastic restaurant. I checked it out on Yelp and the reviews sounded good. But it turned out much better than we imagined. First impressions were very positive walking into this beautiful big room beautifully furnished and tables elegantly set. The menus offered a wide variety of choices. We started with the calamari and an arugula salad, both of which were delicious. My wife ordered the Salmon with citrus glaze and she loved it. I ordered the grilled black pork which was really delicious and was served with vegetables. I enjoyed the dish so much that I didn't plan on having dessert. But when they brought the dessert tray to the table, I couldn't resist. I had a tartufo (best I ever had) and my wife had a chocolate flan. Both were absolutely delicious. What really impressed me was the service. Our waiter was named Christian and he was so professional. He didn't stand over us but he ensured that we had everything we needed. He would top up the water glasses without being asked. When the bill came, I was pleasantly surprised at the value for money. Overall, I was very impressed with this restaurant from all aspects. Woah... that's all I can say. Authentic, great portions, and most importantly, delicious! It's situated near the airport, with airplanes flying overhead almost constantly. We chose to sit outside and despite it being rather loud, the food made up for it. We went with several appetizers, the salted cod, chef's salad, and seafood rice. We didn't do much damage, but everything was so packed with flavor! The sausages were juicy, one was even flambéed in front of our eyes. I honestly cannot complain! Went there on Valentine's Day, there was a live band playing. It was a little loud, but enjoyed it. Food was great, Sangria was great! One thing that set me off was the service. Seemed like we had to deal with 3 different waiters instead of one. It seemed like they were not organized. Menu is not too broad, but good enough. Everyone can find what they are looking for, from seafood to beef and veggies. Prices are ok, not too expensive. But at the end, what counts the most is the food, and we enjoyed it a lot. And Campino's didn't let us down; the salmon was overcooked and more bone than fish, the steak more fat & gristle than meat and the sangria as usual was more juice than wine. Adding to that, one dish was entirely wrong and nowhere near what was ordered. Everything about the dinner sucked and was in absolutely no way worth over $325 (without tip) for 5 people to have been served below sub-par food and fruit juice. It is in a pretty industrial end of the ironbound district in Newark, right off route 9. They have their own lot which is a plus in the ironbound. The staff was friendly, helpful and responsive. Even on a busy night with lots of couples families and large groups. At one point the manager, David, stopped by to check in. They served one of the best dirty martini's. I know that may not seem like a big deal, but it is amazing how many restaurants cannot make a good martini. Then there is the food. Simply amazing. I recommend the lamb chops. Fantastic.
