We went there because of a good Groupon bargain and because we always passed it on the fly and thought it might be a good place to try. It was a ghost town 6:00 on Monday and we began to have our doubts, but soldiered on and went on inside. The decor was beautiful and the service was exemplary. However, the best part was the Paella! I USED to be quite proud of my Paella, having perfected a recipe over the years, however now I can see I was not even close to being on the right track. My husband and I shamelessly ate every....single....grain of that rice and wished for more. Very strange place....went there on a Groupon as most reviewers...and I have a blended experience from everyone else's. First of all, it is a strange building in the middle of 'nowhere'. We were kindly greeted and sat immediately with a wine menu. Then the weirdness....didn't get actual menus for another 10 minutes. They really only had 1 waiter, and like 3 busboys. Then, the music that went from Michael Jackson, to Frank Sinatra to Big Band...just all over the place. The other strange thing...the food was actually really good! The ceviche was good and fresh, and the steak empanadas were good too. Steak was done well (not well-done as I've heard in other reviews). The egg-soaked fish had great flavor. The veggies were very fresh on the side. Around 10pm, they started playing some Latin music, and we thought they were turning into a nightclub. Nope. Just putting on cleaning music for the staff I guess. Food: 5 Drinks: 4 (wine was reasonably priced) Atmosphere: 3 (just too weird, nice enough LOOKING) Service: 3 (very nice, just slow) Price: 5 on the Groupon, otherwise 3. I wasn't impressed with Fernando's. The food was reasonably good, and the place has the look of an upscale restaurant, and prices to match, but it doesn't act upscale. We arrived at a mostly empty restaurant, and while the place itself is actually quite large, they had everyone seated in one tiny corner, making for an unnecessarily loud atmosphere. The chips and avocado sauce were delicious! Other portions were rather small. The roasted potatoes were far too sugary. The rest was certainly passable. The real problem was with the service. It was just too slow. The waiters didn't really make eye contact. Separate waiters for drink orders, appetizer order, meal, desserts, which was odd. They behaved a bit too casual and inattentive for the restaurant type. We had to ask for a spoon for our soup, had to ask for the dessert menu, we sat 10 minutes after our table was cleared before they brought the check, etc. They need to made adjustments to their food prep, and retrain their staff...or just cut prices by about 30%. read more

We went here for our anniversary dinner. Loved the ambiance- dim lighting, table cloths, candles, frank sinatra music, quiet where we could hear one another easily. Food was delicious. They offered us plantain chips and sauce as we started. We ordered the el jefe (steak, potatoes, asparagus), the chicken Marsala, and the custard and chocolate cake and were not disappointed. The service was wonderful. The only disappointment I had was the lack of dancing I had expected. They said they usually do but had a tv out as something special for the Astros World Series game. I've been here 3 times and every thing i've ever gotten was delicious. This evening I ordered the 6 oz carne asada, medium. My hubby and I shared the appetizer trio. He ordered the camarones. First we got plantain chips with an avocado-cream sauce. Very good but a few of the chips weren't as crispy as the others. Next the appetizer- ceviche, shrimp, and steak empanada. The shrimp was in this buttery sauce- very rich and VERY tasty. My steak was very tender and came with a side of asparagus, rice, and plantain. My hubby's shrimp was cooked nicely and was in a tasty buttery sauce. The only down side to this place is the NEED TO HIRE A HOSTESS/HOST, or at least train the wait staff to communicate properly to people who enter. I've read this on other reviews and I don't know why they don't just suck it up and hire one, since the food and service is rather good, this is only one issue that could easily be fixed by hiring someone during their busiest hours and pay the person minimum wage... should be worth it, yes? Tonight we came in and waited for a few minutes before anyone acknowledged us and a waitress (or food runner) said "hi" to us and then walked off... and it was kind of awkward, a few minutes later she walked by again and I said, "can we be seated" and she said "yes I'm preparing your table." Why didn't she just tell us that in the first place other than the awkward "hi" without anything else while we stand there wondering what's going on? When serving hundreds of meals a day, even the nicest places are likely to have a sick patron at some point. I'd like to think some money shelled out for a nice meal and dining experience also goes to train/retain staff who is responsive to the needs of patrons and, at times, concerned about their health. My wife called to speak with a manager because I suspected my food poisoning came from eating here and our doctor told her to call and check if any dishes were prepared with canned or jarred foods to rule out botulism. (rare, deadly, scary) I was really sick so the rest of the review is her experience of the situation: The manager was adamant that nobody got sick from their food, everything except the artichokes are made fresh, and to see a doctor because they would be able to tell us exactly what made him sick- and whatever it was, it didn't come from his restaurant. The manager failed to understand that doctors confirm food poisoning by testing for bacteria and it is difficult to determine the specific offending ingredient after his body rejected & eliminated everything in his system. Instead, the manager offered other possible causes of sickness, then told me (again) to see our doctor because doctors call the health dept if it was food poisoning. Again, I told him I was calling because our doctor wanted to know about the ingredients and the manager started to argue that nobody else had gotten sick. The manager said he had spoken with the health dept earlier in the day and he "heard all about food poisoning from them." (His words to me!) I was not unpleasant or accusing. I did not make ridiculous threats to call the health dept. I was not looking for money back. I was simply concerned about the health of my (usually healthy) husband. Add to that, now appalled by the manager's lack of concern and customer service. A responsive tone or statement of sympathy would have made this situation reasonable. Side-Note: We found it odd the manager said anything about the health dept, so we asked our doctor to clarify. Our doc's response, "If we cannot determine the source of bacteria, we have nothing to report to the health dept. about a specific restaurant. We do try to identify the source of the bacteria and report that in case it is a wide-spread incident." read more

I stopped in for a cocktail during rush hour and didn't eat, but I did have some observations about the location. It's nicely decorated - it's a white table cloth kind of place - and had some decent decor and atmosphere. The thing that stood out was how dead they were. Given it was a Thursday evening, and that's not exactly prime night for dining out, but most other places in Sugar Land would have a lot more people than I saw. First of all unless you have money to spend or celebrating a special night out, it may not be in your budget. However, the food is fantastic. My partner and I got the trio appetizer and it was so heavenly. The food was pretty, and usually that equals pretentious, showy food, but I the ceviche just melts in your mouth. The portions are quite large, and if I went back I would split something along with getting that appetizer and would leave very full. The service is also very good. I live nearby and often see they are closed for private parties, etc so I would definitely recommend calling ahead for reservations. read more

First, I've been before and I liked it then and now. I like the ambiance and the look of the restaurant as well as the friendly wait staff. It is always pretty empty, but I don't mind the quiet. I brought a Groupon to this restaurant without knowing too much about it. It seemed like a good deal so figured I would give it a try. The food was passable but nothing exceptional. The plantain chips were pretty good (probably the best part of the meal), the Ceviche was passable but a little too sour and the beef Empanadas were also pretty good. I had the lamb for my main course and it was mildly disappointing. The preparation was ok but the cuts were not the highest quality. I had a previously tried a similar priced Groupon deal at Union Kitchen and was not happy with my experience here. Were it just for the food, I would have gave the place 3.5 stars but the bad service and ambiance merits a lower rating. We went on a December night and there were no heating int he restaurant. We observed everyone in the table next to us were also wearing heavy coats. The service was under staff and slow, even though they were not busy when I visited. Just left Fernando's and had an amazing experience. It is a Tuesday, so it was not too crowded, but that worked to our favor. The waitstaff was very attentive and Fernando came to our table to visit shortly and make sure we were happy. Drinks were on point, plantains and salads were very tasty. I was exited to see a Groupon for this restaurant since it had been recommend by a friend of ours. What a huge disappointment. It was a Saturday night, when restaurants are normally packed and ti was not, I guess that was the first clue. When we entered the restaurant there was no one to greet us at the hostess podium so we stepped past it and waited there thinking if they could see us then surely someone would at least stop and welcome us and promise that someone would be right with us. We stood there for at least 5 minutes and no one stopped to say a word. We flagged down a server who found our reservation and seated us. We loved the look of the place, there was a band playing and couples dancing. Not overly crowded by any means. A wine list was placed on the table, we made a selection but still, no server after 10 minutes. My boyfriend got up to find the manager. He explained to the manager how we were not greeted and had to flag someone down to get seated and so far no one has even stopped by to welcome us or take a drink order. He asked if this was a bad night and should we come back another night...granted by this time we were frustrated and disappointed with the service. The manager surprisingly said he would like to answer but was afraid he was going to sound offensive but went on to say that they had a short wait staff and a private party in the side room. The place looked to me to be about 15 percent occupied..practically dead, not busy at all. He said he would do his best to attend to us. Forget it...we left. We went to the Post Oak Grill where we were greeted in a very friendly manner even though we did not have a reservation. The service was over the top and the food was simply fabulous and we spent over $350 for our meal including fabulous wine. That was our first experience and we will definitely be back. Absolutely horrible service. If you have Over 7 people they will not do split checks. When asked about split checks the waiter made an ugly face and said no way to do it. Waiter took 45 mins to even ask us if we have questions about the menu. Then walked off. It's now 8 o'clock and there is hardly (4 tables total) anyone here and it's still taking forever to get drinks and food. I felt like we honestly put them out with the few requests we had. My son was very hungry and I asked (since they weren't taking out orders) if I could put a chicken finger order in for him. The waiter told me no and that there 3 tables ahead of us and we had to wait for everyone to order. Huge sign that they have hardly any customers at 8 pm on a Saturday night. I wonder if it has something to do with their piss poor service. With only 4 tables it took 2h 23m to get to dessert. Worst service i have ever had. read more

We had a Living Social deal we got for $39 which included an ap and 2 entrees. When we walked in the place, it reminded me of an old 1970s country club fit for the Boomer generation that live in the nearby once regarded high end sub division. The wait staff were incredibly nice and hospitable. The food was ok...a very simple Latin "inspired"menu, but only inspired...more like your Texas Aunts version of what she got out of her "Betty Crocker: Latin Nights" cook book. After all was said and done, it was a 3 figure dinner that tasted more like a fancier Chili's. For the money, I would have rather gone to Chili's. If you are looking for a place for the office Christmas party...this is the right place. We went to this place on a Tuesday for dinner to redeem a Groupon which was going to expire the next day! Upon entering the restaurant, no one was in the front to greet us. Eventually a server saw us and took us to our table. This place definitely needs to hire a hostess! The uber-chic decor with dim light create a very romantic ambience. No wonder we saw a lot of couples dining there that night. But what blew my mind was the food! Everything down to the fried plantain chips served with dip that every table gets was excellent! I had the Steak Pasta, which was very well seasoned and of perfect portion. My table companion ordered the Parmesan Crusted Chicken and he loved it as well. Our dishes were served with grilled garlic bread, which was delicious! The service was non-intrusive and courteous. Most entrees were in the low to mid $30s which I thought was excessive for that type of place. They did have live music and the ambiance of the place was romantic and calm with low light.
