As soon as I left here, I found myself Googling "color correction NYC." I wanted to look like I had gotten back from St. Tropez, not the Jersey Shore. Ferrazz was kind enough to offer a complimentary cut and balayage via Salon Apprentice in exchange for promotional photos for his salon space. I was pretty excited because I figured since he is the owner, I'd be in good hands. Ferrazz was kind and welcoming and gave me a decent haircut. I did think it was a little strange that he cut my hair first because usually, they cut first and then color. However, when the time came to apply my balayage highlights, I could tell that things were not going to go well and started to regret my decision to accept this service. I asked for subtle balayage highlights toward the bottom of my long, never-dyed hair. Instead, he started painting big, chunky pieces all over my head without seeming to care where they landed. The pieces went all the way up my scalp and included big, awkward sections near the front that stood out oddly. As I watched the color develop and turn orange, I started to freak out on the inside but kept my cool despite myself. After all, I thought, this guy is an experienced professional, and I need to *trust* him. After he washed out the color and started to dry my hair, I couldn't believe how awful it was. My hair was ORANGE all over -- big, bold, brassy stripes of ocre had taken over my entire head -- some of them quite patchy. I just about cried but didn't know what to say. He tried to hide the color disaster by giving me a ridiculous, excessively curly blowout (which I did not like). Then, I had to suffer through being photographed in this state for about 25 minutes. I tipped him $40 because...I felt guilty I guess? In all honesty, I was foolish to accept a free color but having had several good experiences on Salon Apprentice and the fact that Ferrazz is the salon owner made me feel safe I guess. When I got home, I found out that it was worse than I even realized before. After straightening the curly mess, I realized that the entire underlayer of my hair was bleached out and that the tiger stripes ran all over my the top layer. There was no hiding it with a hairstyle or headband. I did text Ferrazz the next day, and he offered to fix it, but I just didn't feel comfortable having him come near me with color or chemicals again. Worse yet, I'm getting married soon and had to go to Miami to see family. After I returned, I ended up paying a lot for a color correction and the stylist who did it couldn't believe what was done to me. read more

This was my first time going into Ferrazz, as I had a last-minute haircut I needed. I saw an Asian-American woman he was finishing up with and her blonde hair and highlights looked exceptional, I told her you are gonna turn heads walking down the street. Usually blonde is tricky with various ethnicities but she looked FAB. I got a haircut that first visit but made a note to myself to go back for his coloring as well one day since I'm Indian and he seems to understand what looks good on various ethnicities/hair types. Ferrazz is very detail-oriented and paid attention to each section of my hair so well. The blowout looked spectacular. Number one for me is hair health and fullness - in the summer I like to let it grow out and don't really like heat tools and he gave me a cut I can just put very little product in and walk out the door. This place exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. It's a 2nd floor hair studio in an unassuming building across from FIT. I have straight, thick hair and was just going to get a trim so I figured I had some space to take a risk and go someplace I'd never been before off a pulsd deal but honestly I'm so happy I did. Ferrazz the owner is talented, knowledgeable and personable. He kept offering me something to drink and made sure I was comfortable. That aside, I couldn't be happier with my hair. I ended up doing a single process color treatment that would have cost triple elsewhere. The color is perfect. It's rich and matches what I asked for/described perfectly. The cut is also exactly what I wanted, it's clean and soft and compliments my hairs natural body/flow. For this chick whose crazy, textured red hair draws lots of attention, an impeccable cut is a must. I'm extremely picky about my haircuts, and it's inevitable that I leave a salon disappointed. In fact, my standards are so high that a trip to the salon recently prompted my best friend to ask, "how unhappy are you?" when I phoned her after a cut. Ferrazz cut my hair carefully and purposefully. The outcome was hair with great shape, movement, and texture. Ordinarily it takes me forever to figure out some way to manipulate my hair into a decent looking 'do for the day, but since my haircut my hair has looked great and styling has been a breeze. I've also received several compliments since my cut to confirm my satisfaction. Aside from the cut itself, the customer service was good, although there was a bit too much product-pushing for my liking. Nonetheless, everyone was still extremely nice, hanging my jacket and purse and offering me beer/wine/water/soda. Ferrazz and his stylists also offer free bang upkeep inbetween cuts, so I'll certainly be utilizing that in the next few weeks. I definitely recommend a haircut with Ferrazz for anyone who has textured hair like mine. In fact, I think it's worth noting that I've been a member of Yelp for over a year but have not been inspired to write a review until now. Had a great first cut and experience here. Great laid-back + super clean space. An excellent stylist. I was convinced I would be a regular, and I booked another appt. a few months out. A few months later, I called to confirm my second appt. and was told that they had lost my reservation due to a computer glitch. If I were up for the possibility that I might have to wait (in the case they doubled-booked me by accident) I was welcome to keep my appt. So, I did. Then, the afternoon before my appt. I got a voicemail from Ferrazz saying they had to cancel due to a facilities problem. I called back to reschedule citing the facilities problem, which was met with confusion by another receptionist. This other receptionist said he didn't know what I was talking about -- he hadn't heard of a facilities problem, and that I could keep my appt. but I'd have to have another stylist. This is the best salon in Hoboken and is on par with or better than those in the city (and the price is slightly less). Kathy has been cutting my hair for a little over a year and she does a great job; I always receive compliments from others after she has cut or blown out my hair. She is very detail oriented, and the cuts she gives are easy to maintain and style on my own. They use Phyto products and sometimes give free samples, but never push or pressure you to buy the products. In keeping with the Phyto brand, this salon stresses natural, healthy hair. I have a few strands of grey and I asked my stylist about coloring. She felt that since the grey wasn't really that prominent I should wait given that I get my hair Japanese straightened somewhere else. She didn't want to over stress it with chemical processes. This was a stark contrast to Toni & Guy where I also pointed out the grey and they immediately tried to pitch coloring and brought their colorist over to talk about options with me. I started to come to Ferrazz after my guy left DopDop in Soho; I made an appointment with Lyndsey. She consistently gives a good haircut, at less than have of what I used to pay. The reception is very polite and have recommended many friends to come to Ferrazz. I tried this salon at the request of my boyfriend, who made me an appointment after he did his research. I have been here a couple of times and have always gone to Ferrazz. Pro: Ferrazz does a great job of cutting my hair to revive it after I do untold heat damage to it and to take out the extra thickness of it. He styles it very well and much better compared to the salons I've gone to in Brooklyn when I used to live there. Pro: The salon is clean, neat, not a thing is out of place, and they offer you a drink while you wait/during your appointment Pro: I arrive usually a couple minutes before my appointment and rarely have to wait long (sometimes a few minutes if Ferrazz is having a snack, which I understand- the guy has to eat) Neutral: I tried the phyto products and they're nice products but have found that they aren't really for me. I do still use the leave in conditioner on my ends as Ferrazz recommended. Con: I do agree with other reviewers, it is a little inconvenient to have to call to confirm that you are still going to make it to your appointment rather than to call and cancel. Con: Parking in hoboken (good luck finding something free where they won't tow your car or leave you a ticket); the salon does not have a dedicated lot Con: Tips (cash only as far as I can remember so that means a trip to the ATM for me as I do not carry cash regularly). Con: For a college student on limited funds, they are a bit on the pricy side As an aside, my boyfriend and I were very pleased with the salon after my first and second visits (I think I got a 20% off coupon for my second visit) that he decided to treat his mom to an appointment as well. She got a color treatment, which was a couple of months ago, and if I recall correctly they only had to apply color to her roots. To make a long story short, they had to use harsh chemicals to strip the color out of her hair because it didn't take the first time (they did a poor job) and she had to go back for numerous treatments- inconvenient and costly. As that is her experience, I didn't let it affect my rating but it is something to be cautious about (I took one star off because of the convenience factor of location, parking, tip, and mandatory appointment confirmation call, the four stars is attributed to their skill) If you want a hair cut and have the money, absolutely go, they will transform your hair into a work of art. I got my hair cut here yesterday by Elle. The salon was nice and clean inside. They offer you a drink and I was set up to go right away without waiting. The person that shampooed my hair made sure I knew what she was doing and how it was helping. They used Phyto products. She set the ones she used out so that I could see and purchase on my way out but wasn't overly pushy. Elle is great in terms of listening to how you want it and I have to say that she's pretty good in terms of cutting everything straight and precise. But the haircut just came out "meh" on me. I'm not a total fan. If you have a pretty easy trim and layering thing going on, I think she'd cut it really well. The other thing is that they offer you a 20% off if you schedule a second appt with your stylist. That's good news. The cut and dry with Elle was $70. read more

Ok, so I admit it's been a few years since I've been here, but I want to finally vent. Mind you this review is only about one stylist, so I'm not condemning the whole place. I just have to give it one star because two means, "Meh, I've had better." I happened to be outraged. I scheduled my appointment with Lyndsey because I read she was good at extensions, and although I did not have them, being able to cut them in general requires talent. The vibe of the salon was good. Very laid back and far from snooty. I told her I wanted a shag, but that I wanted the layers TO CURVE IN. While cutting she was constantly talking to others, and was obviously not giving total attention to my haircut. Besides taking too much off, my hair was sticking OUT all over the place. I was about to burst into tears. I pointed how one side was pointing more in and then she said, "Oh, you wanted long layers." I wanted to hit her. She offered to fix a small portion with extensions for free, but as I was paying she was telling this to the cashier and then goes, "What...what's her name?" Right in front of me! Why don't you politely ask me for my name again woman?!! So disrespectful. I can't believe I paid and tipped her before she said that. Diamond in the rough! It seems so difficult to find a great salon in this city but after years of searching, this is the place! The salon is clean, sleek and modern and offers a wide range of services all reasonably priced. Not only is Ferrazz a talented and knowledgeable person he also knows how to LISTEN, which is rare in the industry. Above all else he was very patient and considerate while working with me... especially when I changed my appointment 3 times and was on the phone with my demanding boss who called me midway through my shampooing! Nice salon, good equipment, poor customer service. Shared lots of passive aggression upon customers who ask for change. Owner is funny and eccentric, but doesn't step in to help the situation. The end product was good after begging and pleading them to make changes. With a heavy heart I write this. I have been going here for FOUR yrs! Yep! And recently made my usual 6 wk appt. I got a call to confirm this five days before. I asked why FIVE days! And was told he has new policies now. I said I have been seeing Ferraz himself and have accommodated him even at his house! And even when the salon is closed just to accommodate his schedule And now he is throwing his new policies at me!? A "regular" client. Doesn't he know to use his discretion? I was told he is even doing this with his 15 yr old clients since they have been canceling on him and he looses money each time. I said I understand that however doesn't he know his clients fairly intimately and shouldn't he use his discretion when applying "new" rules across the board. I said five days advance notice for a hair appointment is a bit excessive! After all a lot can happen in five days! I said calling 24 hrs ahead to confirm is the norm and have even heard of three days. But even then 24 hrs is still the norm. But not FIVE days ahead of the appointment! She said that was Ferraz's new rule! So I asked what happens if I can't make the appointment she says he will charge you 50% of the services you had planned on getting. Now that was the boiling point for me! As my average bill there with him personally is $400 each time or a minimum of $250!!! Every 6 weeks! Now that's a lot of darn $$$ for him to treat me like his average client that should have his "new book of runes" thrown at me! And charge me 50% of my bill! And to add to that I said I have never ever cancelled on him in four yrs! And too bad for him he has never paid attention to my loyalty! On a side note BTW I have seen him throw stylists out on the spot in front of clients for disagreeing with him. Granted that is not the same thing but my point is your clients make you who you are in the beauty business. You won't be doing hair or make up or any type of service dealing with a persons body if you don't have a BODY to do it on! So that's that! I am done with people providing a service acting like it's a favor on top of being paid top dollar! I also don't appreciate someone providing a service acting like a DIVA that is superior to even own his clients! After all people have been going to get their hair done to feel and be treated and leave feeling like the "diva"! Lastly, I don't know what has happened to Ferraz quite honestly I have noticed him become more and more massoginistic Chest beating and delusional with less than zero people skills and ALWYAS finds himself in the need of new staff to deal with his temperamental "book of new rules" that seem to keep changing based on his mood. Very unprofessional and disappointing Ferraz! After all that time building a relationship that I was mislead into thinking meant something. I do hope she told him that he lost me forever! I understand that the hair industry might be tough. Your business is only as good as the stylists that you hire, and it may be difficult to regain customers should a stylist leave. This, however, is no excuse for directly lying to your customers when they come looking for a stylist that has left. Making up lies about how they moved hours away when they are actually working in Hoboken is deceptive and very unprofessional. A simple, "I'm sorry- that stylist has left the salon...but may I recommend another stylist?" would have done just fine. Can you give a place negative stars? So this place had great reviews so I booked an appointment for 6pm for a color. They called that day and left the generic confirming your appointment voicemail. I was in a deposition all day so could not pick up my phone. I hop on the subway and path from midtwon to get there by 6. I arrive at 5:55 for my appointment and they cancelled it because I did not pick up the phone when they called me at 3 that day to confirm it. WTF!!! I said "seriously" and they gave me attitude and told me the stylist left 10 minutes ago. They couldn't have waited 10 minutes for a scheduled appointment?!?!?! What salon makes you call back 3 hours before your appointment or they cancel you. And the voicemail they left me said nothing about me having to call back, just the generic calling to confirm your appointment at 6 today. And the worst part is they didn't even apologize. They said it was my fault for not answering the phone 3 hours before hand on a work day when some of us have jobs that have meetings, court conferences, etc. I recieved attitude from the receptionist, was treated rudely, and frankly if you don't wear skinny black jeans and smoke outside in front of the store I guess you wouldn't belong. The whole place reminded me of a bad scene with the vibe and style from the movie beetlejuice when they were redoing the house I can't believe people actually put up with this sort of bs. I'm not quite sure what's going on with Ferrazz. I originally had my hair colored by Ann and it was great so I sent my boyfriend to get his hair cut by Ann. About a month later things just started getting bad, my boyfriend's appointment slot had been double booked, then lost and no apologizes were offered. The cherry on top was when I showed up for an evening appointment with Ann to have my highlights touched up (I left work early for this appointment). When I showed up I was notified that Ann didn't work there anymore and that I would have to wait for 2 weeks for the next appointment. Two weeks later the salon had been closed. I was left with hardly any hair, I wanted to cry. He thinned out my hair so much my hair looked like a mushroom. Bouncy on the top of head and all thinned out in the bottom. The salon itself is chic/modern and service is great. But don't let that fool you! I called to give them feedback and they told me that's their technique for EVERYONE! Okay I've only been twice so I'm not truly experienced here yet, but so far A++! Can we talk about the shampooing for a second? Because oh my god. Best scalp massage ever, and I've had someone different do it each time and they've been equally as good. The first time I went the woman seriously shampooed my hair for 10 minutes nonstop... heavennnn! I got highlights the second time and they came out fantastic, she suggested trying two shades of blonde to give it a natural look, and it really looks good! Fantastic blow outs too.
