Surprisingly empty on a Sunday evening. Ordering process is very simple. We got 1/2 lb each of brisket, ribs, burnt ends, pork belly along with sides of pickles, potato salad, baked beans. Really solid BBQ, some of the best I've had in NYC (though still not as good as Texas BBQ imo) We got the smoked pork belly, brisket, and the bison ribs with a side of the broccoli salad. You basically walk in and just order your meats and sides via a counter and then find a place to sit, pretty standard for a BBQ joint. Everyone was super friendly and gave recs on the meats + sides, and I appreciated being able to sample the sides before picking. As for the meats: the brisket was pretty good. It was slightly less juicy and tender than I'd like, but definitely satisfies the craving. The bison ribs had great flavor but were really tough to get off the bone. It was also probably the most expensive in terms of meat per lb since the price includes the weight of the bone, so I'd recommend skipping this one. The real star of the show was the smoked pork belly. We were considering getting the pork ribs instead, but boy am I glad we got the pork belly - it was the best of both worlds. Flavorful and smokey, but still super juicy and tender because of the high fat content. Finally made it back to this spot, and it's just as good as I remembered. The ambiance perfectly captures that Texas BBQ vibe-rustic, laid-back, and all about the meat. This place still serves the best brisket and pork ribs in NYC. The brisket is tender and flavorful, and the ribs are smoky, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. There's definitely smoke in the flavor, but it's balanced, never overwhelming or masked by a bark that's too heavy on pepper. This time, I tried the pork belly, but it was a bit dry, which was a miss. Thankfully, the brisket and ribs more than made up for it. As for the sides, the cole slaw was fine, and the baked beans were on the sweeter side-exactly as they're supposed to be. But let's be honest, I'm not here for the sides; it's all about the BBQ. Weird. No line on a Sunday. Service is quick enough. Ambience is garage butcher shop. Dark with lots of wood. Maybe it was the combo of beer and food but the BBQ was underwhelming and disappointing in person, mainly from lack of flavor. Ordered most of the meat items and a good selection of sides. Wings were satisfying. Brisket was dry and lacking in flavor. Pork belly was decent and indulgently rich. A takeout portion of pork ribs showed me that the flavor is there. Maybe it was failure of the rack we happened to have in person. A takeout beef rib remained tough and over salted. Not exactly a full redemption. For the price, it's quite disappointing. In the decade that has passed since I last came here, NY's BBQ game has leveled up. The wider availability of BBQ basically removed the need for me to come to Brooklyn, with my last pilgrimages being Delaney BBQ and more recently Hometown BBQ. I thought it's about time to throw my review into the gauntlet. If you were to take my review with a grain of salt, that grain would be that it was an hour and a half from closing time on a Thursday. I made the decision to dine here based on two factors: 1. Fette Sau has been for a long time a restaurant that sporadically appears on lists of best BBQs in NYC. & 2. My friend Kevin, whose all of his recommendations so far have been stellar Fette Sau is a great reminder that all humans are fallible. An expensive miss that I'm a little embarrassed that I took my friends to that were visiting from outta town. So off the bat, the servers were causal and friendly. The bartender seemed like he didn't wanna be there but still chill. The menus were a little confusing, mostly because the appetizers/sides were fairly separated from the main items. While I was waiting for my friends, my gf went ahead and ordered. She came back with a paltry tray that was about $40. It looked sad enough that I was commanded to just indiscriminately order a bunch of meat to fill us. One of the items she ordered was the brisket and I think like 3 wings were half a lb. That brisket had the life choked out of it before we came. I summed it up to being inching closer to closing time. Later however, my friends also ordered the brisket and it was much juicier. I think we got the end that must've been sitting awhile, and they got a more inward cut. No biggie, it happens. I could continue listing items but the crux of it is, it was dry and expensive. The best item was the baked beans with mixed meats inside. Mostly because they gravy was supplying life to the burnt ends. I have to say though, the crust on ribs gave a hint of smokey and complexity. It was faint, so maybe when it's fresh out the grill? Judging by when this restaurant received consistent praise, I'd say they were great around a time when there weren't many handmade bbq options. Have been meaning to come here forever but was always prevented because it used to be cash only. After hearing that they take card I immediately made plans to go with a friend. I already had a sense of how ordering works but the staff was great at explaining that meat is ordered by the half pound and sides are by the quarter pound. For two people we did three meats (beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken wings) and two sides (brocolli salad and beans). It was plenty for two people and we even had leftovers to take for the road. I preferred the ribs and wings to the brisket, as the brisket was a tad too fatty for my liking. Although if you plan to have a drink or two alongside your meal, it cuts the fat pretty nicely and makes for a good pairing. The beans were definitely the best out of everything. I made my way pretty much through the entire serving, even though I have ibs which says a lot. I just couldn't help myself! I went on Memorial Day, but I called in advance as the hours on the website were different from the special hours posted on Yelp. No reservations can be made as it's first come, first served, and first seated. It makes sense. You come in through what seems to be the back open seating area. Go in through their entrance and have to line up to order food. Ppl usually have one person go up and order and reserve a seating area. But it's suggested that you get your food first. They're open for lunch and dinner normally. All the items on the menu aren't all available. You'll know when you arrive. When I went, we ordered the Berkshire Pork Belly, which tasted really good. I definitely recommend this one. The pork ribs were second best. The beef brisket wasn't that great, I wouldn't get it again. This is almost certainly the best BBQ in Brooklyn! Tucked away without much signage, Fette Sau is a hidden gem. We got the brisket, pulled pork, spicy sausage, potato salad, and coleslaw. The brisket and potato salad were my favorite. We really wanted to try the mac and cheese, but they were all out (everything is subject to availability, which can be a bummer). Every order comes with dinner rolls, which is nice. We used them to make our own pulled pork sandwiches, which were sooo good. The self-serve barbecue sauces on each of the picnic tables are amazing and really made the meal for us. My only critique is that the brisket was very fatty, which is a bit annoying when you're paying by weight. It was so good, I just wish we were given more meat! In terms of dining experience, the restaurant definitely has a very cool southern vibe. No complaints about the service. This wouldn't have so much been a problem if the seats were not made out of tractor seats which slanted forward. It felt the entire time I was seated I was having to engage my core. Returned here today for the first time in several years. I had the corn bread, a sausage, and some ribs. The corn bread was excellent, the sausage was very good, but once again the ribs were a big disappointment. I had to "tug" at the meat in order to get it off the bone, an indication that the ribs are not being smoked long enough. Such a shame because I've read and seen so much about this place; I've been so excited to eat here for a while now. I got the ribs, sausage, brisket, burnt ends, and cornbread. If I could give this a 4.5 I would. So to start, the atmosphere/vibe is immaculate. Love the walls, the bar area, the employees, everything is just awesome. Service is super good, I should've asked for the guys name but he was super nice and chill. Let's talk about the food/alcohol now: The alcohol was good. I had the "around the town" whiskey flight (local stuff). Was super good and happy. Was $30 with pretty good pours. My favorite by far was the straight malt interboro whiskey (see pictures). If you don't want to get a flight. Get that. Beer selection, they have a pilsner at the the top of the list that's made for them. DEFINITELY get that. Goes super well with the bbq and just tastes super good. Tried the hefe as well and that was alright. Stick to the pilsner, trust. I'm a big pickle fan and knew what I was getting into with half sour pickles and they are good for what they are but I like more of the vinegar bite with the savory bbq. They have a good crunch and a salty taste. Brisket is solid (both the top thing for my wife and I), especially with the spicy bbq and the sweet bbq sauces. Bark is good, smoke flavor, just a solid pick. I'm a big fan of broccoli salad (but a different style) which I did ask him what it was like and knew it was different than what I was used to. I like the mayo style with onion, bacon, cheddar, and some apple cider vinegar. This is more vinegar dressing (pretty light) with some red pepper, garlic, and I think coarse salt (my wife didn't like that part because there was a bit of a brunch/grind with certain bites) although it didn't bother me at all. I liked the snap and flavor of the sausage, I could see some people saying it was a bit dry but again, it is a smoked sausage, and I ended up alternating dipping it in their sauces or having it plain. I loved it honestly. Beans were awesome. Sweet, savory, and just super good. This might be a hit or miss depending on the review that you read. Overall, this seems to be the place to go for NYC, at least for what I looked up. And it's solid. Only reason I think it's not a 5/5 for me is because I've been to a lot of places in Los Angeles, Texas, and I smoke a lot of meats myself so I know what it can be. It's still definitely worth going though in my opinion. Grab some bbq (brisket, beans, and maybe some ribs), a beer, and a whiskey if that's your thing and have a good time. I am not sure why they would even serve us what they served us. It was a pile of gross, dry, grease. 86 an item if this what you are going to sell. Won't be back. Was walking in Brooklyn and stumbled on this place. Had a nice bbq smell and cozy setting so decided to check it out. Got 2 chicken thighs, 4 ribs, some cornbread and coleslaw. The chicken thighs were very good, juicy, and had a nice smoky taste. The ribs were dry and bland, no flavour - hard pass. Coleslaw was good but they should've given more - less mayo. Cornbread was dry and broke to bits - asked for some raw honey which made it better; hard pass. Portions felt cheap for 56$ worth - felt ripped off.
