For the life of me I cannot imagine how somebody can come to this restaurant and not give them five stars. We are always greeted graciously by the owner who is the sweet lady that sits by the front. We are always quickly seated and treated with the upmost respect. It is so hard to find that in restaurants these days. The food is to die for. I went out to lunch with a few of my co-workers. The restaurant seem a little outdated and a few of our chairs where lopsided. We came here on Christmas Day, so your experience may be different than mine. It was less than ideal since there was a lot of delay and confusion. However, after reading other reviews, maybe I shouldn't blame our experience on Christmas Day! The restaurant is quite large. It can seat really large parties. I came here with a party of six. Our main issue was that they seemed to have forgotten about half of our dishes. We got three dishes relatively quickly, but then 30+ minutes passed by before we got the rest of our food. We actually had to ask them what happened to our food, and then our food came out somewhat quickly afterwards, meaning that it didn't really take that long to prepare. They were also generally not that friendly. One person in our party asked for a water refill, and the waiter totally just ignored him. I also thought the food quality was just okay. I felt my temperature boiling higher than the heat I expected from the Sichuan food here. The car in front of me switched parking spots (leaving me with a much smaller one for my larger car) and I was barely able to maneuver into the cramped spot in the small parking lot. Then the same party stepped inside and took the last available table as we just hit the work lunch crowds. The place was packed and every table looked as if they were just starting to eat at the hour. Why was my frustration and feeling so familiar? Then I realized. Fey Restaurant is blocks away from Gombei and the parking lot and restaurant size are very similar. Way too small parking spaces (with only one way in and out) and crowds all waiting to dine. Having long given up on the cuisine at Gombei, I wondered if Fey would be worth the wait. The interior of Fey was very nice though, with a modern feel and clean juxtaposed with the all Chinese language program playing on the plasma TV. After 30 minutes, we were finally seated. The predominant booth seating in the front half of the restaurant hides heating elements for the hot pot grills, so it's not surprising reviews comment on knees hitting the table. I was hungry and had made productive use of my waiting time by studying the menu. No lunch specials for me. Spicy Beef Combination of Cold Beef and Beef Tripe - nice cuts of cold beef were intermixed with slivers of tasty tendon. The flavor was great with a nice heat that left the tongue slightly numb like all great Sichuan food. This dish gives Chef Ma (San Jose) a run for flavor. Sichuan Cold Spicy Noodles (with Minced Pork) - great looking dish with minced pork, a peanut based sauce and fresh cold noodles and cucumbers. They mix it at the table and it has perfect flavor. After enjoying this, I knew the meal would be legit. Sauteed Pea Sprouts - our one non-spicy dish and the one vegetable dish. Well prepared and excellent wok heat. The chefs here know how to cook. Hot and Sour Soup - ordered a medium ($5.95) An enormous bowl arrived and was enough for 6 people. Standard tofu, egg, and bamboo shoots, but what heat. I almost found this too hot. Nice flavor but lots of pepper almost causing me to cough. I remember one review stating this soup was bland. Can't see how that would be so. Xinjiang kebab - $4.50 per skewer and the longest item to wait for. Nice large chunks of lamb are well seasoned with Chinese spices. There's a strong lamb flavor (for those that like that) and it's very tasty. I'm glad we ordered this. In the end, I was glad I made the trip to stop by Fey and stuck out waiting both the parking situation and the long lunch time wait. The food, despite very mixed reviews, is very legit and I'm not surprised. The owner is supposedly from the original Little Sichuan in San Mateo and that's the only reason I came. I suspect those with more negative experiences are sampling their Americanized fare that they have to cater to the Menlo Park population. That being said, the crowds were not just work time crowds as I saw many Mainland and Chinese faces, all ordering similar Sichuan dishes as I did. Stick to the Sichuan dishes (starred as House Specials) and you should have a great meal. I have driven by this restaurant countless times over the years, and put off dining here because the exterior looks like a chop suey restaurant. As it turns out I dined at this location in 2009 when it was operated by another proprietor as Ten Fu - a dreadful experience. So when there was a name change and the exterior was practically the same, I mistakenly assumed a rebranding. I was wrong. Tip for owners don't just slap on new signage and leave the exterior the same. This place completely modernized the interior of the restaurant that was Ten Fu, gone were the dirty stained carpets and the crusty sticky tabletops. In its place was a well done interior. The food was amazing. Two dishes were ordered. The spicy pork intestine noodle delivered to perfection with a decent amount of intestines, fair amount of noodles, served with a spicy numbing broth. i have been pleasantly surprised by this restaurant and am happy to say that my preconceived notions of what kind of ambiance and clientele you can expect to find at a good Szechuan restaurant have been challenged. With a nicely decorated interior, clean bathrooms, and an upscale location like Menlo Park, we went in with relatively low expectations for the food. However, it is close and the Yelp rating was good enough that we decided to give it a chance. Normally our go-to Szechaun place is Da Szichuan on El Camino in Palo Alto. You have to remember to ask them for "extra hot and extra spicy" to really get the dishes with some punch, but otherwise they are usually spot on. The menu is pretty extensive including hot pot offerings in the back which we have not yet tried. Each place setting has its own individual hot pot burner built in which must make for an interesting hot pot setup. In addition to the usual nonsense like sweet and sour pork and orange chicken they have some gems: the cumin lamb was flavorful and the shui zhu yu was quite good. The last time we were there we ordered off-menu and they were able to do a very tasty batch of spicy fried fish fillet. The service is decent and they offer brown rice. Parking is limited to a pretty small lot so I would recommend finding a spot on the street or a block or two away and then walking. I especially recommend finding a spot elsewhere if you have a fat vehicle. We saw some interesting 50-point turn maneuvers being executed by a minivan trying to get out of their small parking lot at one point. if you are in the area, this is definitely worth a shot. The food is decent, the ambiance surprisingly nice, and you're not going to find much else along this stretch of the peninsula so stop on by. read more

Ordered from Fey via Doordash, simply because our favorite restaurant was closed on Monday and we had to find an alternative. What's good: Fast delivery. Under 30 min during peak dinner hour (7pm).. What's okay: The wonton soup and dumplings seemed okay. My 7-yr-old son liked them. What's not so good: we ordered mapo toufu, twice returned pork, and spicy shredded potatoes. Sadly, they all tasted the same. Looks like the chef didn't bother to put effort in each dish and just use the same OILY sauce for every dish we ordered. Did you not see the capitalized OILY? Yes!!! Good, solid Chinese food. Fey is deeply focused in the spicy-style, and while it might say Szechuan on the Yelp page, they also serve other types of Chinese cuisine, like those of Hunan or Xinjiang. It's actually quite similar to Crouching Tiger in Redwood City, but with a slightly different set of dishes. Keeping that in mind, the food would be on the salty side. It's not a big deal for me, as long as I order some rice to keep the sodium at bay. We tried their famous dish -- the tea smoked duck, as well as the spicy green beans (a personal favourite), and hot-boiled beef. Everything tasted decent, with the duck being the clear winner of the meal. However, the beef was a bit underwhelming in terms of spiciness and the amount of actual beef in the dish. While I would come back for some of their other dinner food (especially the hot pot -- I got extremely jealous eyeing what other people are eating), the interesting part is their brunch. No, I don't mean hot pot for brunch, but they have Chinese-style brunch with fried doughnuts and soy milk! I still haven't managed to visit on a weekend, but the mere thought of it gets me excited. Almost everything is spicy so make sure that you come here with people who love spicy food and lots of schezuan chili peppers and chili oil! 3.5/5 stars because the service is not the best. THe old Ten Fu space looks spectacular. A cool aquarium up front and combination of sleek fish school sculptures that cover one of the walls and space age lighting make this look nothing like a Chinese restaurant. They do a good balance of both Beinjing and Sichuan style food. Got the dry fried chicken wings, dong po pork knuckle, cold tripe in chili oil, lamb skewers, and tea smoked duck. The flavors were all very solid. The service? A weird mix of very friendly and trying to get us the fuck outta there because they were closed. We have eaten here many times and generally think it's very good. I don't think we've ever had an issue until tonight. We ordered to pick up through uber eats. We ordered hot and sour soup, Hunan chicken and spicy beer duck. We've never had the latter and thought we'd give it a try. The hot and sour was fine (not spicy at all) but the two meat dishes were too spicy to eat. (We did eat them and it was painful.) We've never had an issue like this before here. I called in and found the woman at the front very unsympathetic. She said they were marked spicy so I should expect it. All three were marked spicy so there was major inconsistency between them, but there was also inconsistency with our past visits. I'm not surprised at the lack of sympathy (and generally gruff style) of management, but that doesn't excuse it. We want to support our local restaurants and our past experiences here have been great, but our expectations have been tempered by this experience. Location: Off El Calmino & Valparaiso in Menlo Park. Parking: Around 10-15 spots in the back of the restaurant. Some cars also park in the driveway going toward the rear. Service: Service is good-- they make a team effort to make sure things are timely and you get what you should at the right now. Free appetizer and tea come before your meal. Food is out pretty quickly (close to 5 minutes for our 2 dinner dishes plus rice). Waiters make periodic checks to make sure you're doing okay, and to refill drinks or change our your tea pot. Easy to get attention to get your check or a to go box. Ambiance: One thing that stood out about this restaurant is its look. From the outside, it looks like most other Chinese restaurants complete with the red neon sign lighting up the name. But the inside was a different story. The interior is clean, modern, and attractive. There is a gray color scheme inside with vaulted ceilings, ceiling to floor sweeping curtains, really comfortable booths with a large sweeping school of metal fish swimming across one of the long walls. The tables also have warming circles, I presume for the hot pot dishes they serve, with knobs to control the heat. The eating space is divided into 2 areas. The front is furnished with booths complete with hot pot tables and the back is furnished with round family sized tables. Food: I loved the food. The sauces and flavors were well balanced. None of the overly thickened and overly sweet sauces. It was just right. The fish I ordered was great, soft and cooked just enough. They're good at adjusting the heat level to your tastes/request as well. I love the flavor of spicy dishes, but I can't take the heat-- and they did well with making my dish truly mild without losing any of the flavor. Pricing: Prices were definitely reasonable, especially for the Menlo Park area. Lunch specials are around $7.50 and dinner dishes are mostly around the $9.50-$13.50 range. My husband and I were on a mission to find spicy Szechuan food and he found this restaurant on yelp. We went last night finally and it was about 3.5 stars. The service was alright, their not overly friendly. The lady who seated us kind of snapped at us when we asked for a high chair. She seemed bothered by helping us. When we were seated we only received the crispy wontons and not the fermented beans. All the other diners who were Asian recieved both snacks. I found that rude to assume that we don't eat those. I'm not sure if I'd like them but still... Which is also rude is the tip being included to the bill. I don't like that one bit. It's not like were a huge party of ten. We ordered so much food since my husband is a chef we like to try many items. The green onion pancake was delicious! I only had a little since it's gluten but it was tasty. The steamed pork dumplings were good too. I tried the cold spicy pork noodles which weren't that spicy. They had good flavor though. The dry fried shrimp were amazing! I would totally recommend those. We also ordered the chicken fried rice which was meh. It had huge tendeny chunks of boiled chicken in it which weren't very appetizing. Also the black bean chicken was very tendeny which is a huge disappointment cuz the flavor was delish. If I went back I'd definitely order those spicy shrimps! The restaurant was nice and clean besides there being an old rib bone under my table. I'd maybe try it again. read more
