I consider myself a major skeptic when it comes to new-fangled recovery stuff, but there does seem to be some solid and emerging research around cold therapy and brown fat, light therapy and infrared sauna, and compression. As a 49 year old triathlete, I do find that I just don't snap back like I used to. I have tried cryo before once, but it was one of those stand-up tubes where your head sticks out, and frankly, I could not tell it did much for me. FICS has a different type -- it's more like a walk-in freezer, so the cold air does not escape out the top. I stayed in for 3 minutes and probably could have stayed in a little longer. It didn't register as "cold" to me as much as it just felt good. You kind of feel like a champ when you come out. I also tried the light therapy bed, and this was my favorite. It looks like a tanning bed, but it's totally different light and isn't hot at all. The orange light pulses for 10 minutes. I couldn't believe that pulsing orange light would make me feel so relaxed, but it really did -- it was very strange (in a good way). Did these things help my athletic recovery? It's hard to say after just one visit. But it does have me doing more research on these therapies and how they could fit into my training overall. If pursuing technology recovery solutions is your thing, this is the right place. FICS is spotless and the atmosphere is very chill. I like that it's a level above the street -- feels a bit removed from the bustle of 23rd street. Owners are super nice and will tell you all about the special transformer they had to install just for the cryo machine. It's neat to see a place that's really at the zenith of recovery technology. I've run 16 Marathons which includes qualifying for Boston and completing the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Recovery is a big part of my regimen and I finally decided to try cryotherapy for the first time. That cryo chamber worked. All my soreness completely gone after one session, 2 days after a tough 10k race. I did feel a little squeaky in my joints though after experiencing the photobiomodulation bed. It's the Low level laser light therapy. Aspen LaserBed that removed all inflammation that my body is used to having. And the finally, relaxation and therapeutic release on the Zero Gravity bed was an excellent way to end the overall therapy session. Right after the US Womens Soccer Team parade in the Wall Street area, I felt an acute pull in my lower back, right above my right kidney. I thought the evening would punish me for my enthusiasm. FICS was a great surprise to me! I've been achy my whole adult life from exercise and injury so when I heard about this I was psyched... but skeptical. I had an awesome time trying out each of the equipment zero bath was cool although I probably need to spend longer than 10 min to get it's positive effect. The compression and sauna were my 2 favorites! The compression would be great if you are like me who trains the lower body heavy meaning squats and deadlift !
