a piano in a living room

If the crumbling piano in the front yard doesn't tip you off, one step inside will leave no doubt. Fiddler's Green put the "e" in eclectic. Not to mention entertaining, enjoyable and exceptionally delicious. It's a quirky place, filled with a motley collection of period funkiness, watched over by an ancient dog who sleeps on a bearskin covered couch. Yet it all seems to work. This was our first visit to Washington Island and Fiddler's Green quickly become our favorite destination. The place seems to be a direct extension of Kate, the proprietor, cook, and master of ceremonies who welcomed us as if we were old friends. We had an enchanting first evening mingling with a colorful mix of locals and tourists over pints of hard cider, listening to music on the lawn where an aged travel trailer has been reborn as a mainstage. We returned the next day for lunch and I enjoyed some very tender beef tenderloin medallions with a horseradish sauce that had a tasty kick. My wife had the duck breast sandwich that was equally savory. We couldn't decide which we liked better. The gingered carrots where a big hit too. Day two brought us back for a second visit. I happily tucked into the Traditional Gyro while my wife enjoyed the stuffed salmon. We finished with fresh picked cherry pie. The menu is small but, like the place, original, and there are options for vegetarians and carnivores alike. But bring cash, as this is a no plastic zone. We're looking forward to returning to Fiddler's Green next year for another helping of its laid back hipness and to have a pint with our new old friend Kate.

I forgot to review these guys before. We stopped in for a late lunch / early dinner and stayed much longer thanks to a thunderstorm. This was probably the best place we dined at on the island during our honeymoon. Very well thought out and prepared offerings. We want to come back!

Yummy Wild Sockeye Salmon Wellington and an organic mixed green salad with goat cheese, candied walnuts, dried cherries, and vinegarette dressing that all just married so well together! The owner was very friendly and I love the unique decor and live music!! Only downfall, cash or check only and there is no sign telling you that or any staff warning you before you sit down.

    Wonderful setting

Kate keep doing what you do and share your passion. You have created an inviting atmosphere with your friendly "welcome"when you head through the door. You and Vincent made our first time to the island perfect. We will be back.

We liked the ambience, owner and great music but this all comes at a high price. $6 pints. Yikes!

I'm going to give Bread and Water another 5 stars this year for 2 reasons:…read more1. Cherry pie is delicious. Plenty of cherries, flaky and melt in your mouth crust. Clearly made right here with love. 2. Great job w Covid-19 precautions: hand washing station, clean bathrooms, all food served in paper board (not styrafoam) to go containers. The most together food service ive seen this year on Washington Island in terms of being hygienic. Sandwiches are straight forward and tasty. Nothing fancy, imho. Don't know about the burgers, we ate those at the Albatross where I think any place on the island would have stiff competition to beat how tasty those are! Don't let the shaby exterior of Bread and Water fool you, food is solid.

Odd little place with mismatched old tables and chairs, kind of like grandma's back porch. Out of…read morecherry pie at noon. I had the the mountain BLT with chips and my wife asked for a simple grilled chicken breast because she was having stomach problems, but the communication between the cook and the waitress (written on paper that we saw) produced a greasy grilled chicken breast. The one waitress was not able to handle the requests from three tables inside and people sitting on the porch. The mission of the restaurant is to serve some operation within the Methodist Church, but a classier approach is needed to assure the customers that once you get past "Bread and Water" there is competence in the kitchen.
