This restaurant is a must do if you're on Washington Island! The food is excellent and not like every other place. I had a caprese sandwich and it was just perfect. This place is AMAZING!! It's truly my kind of place with an unbelievably eclectic mix of knick knacks and decoration and hodgepodge mix of furniture. A very comfortable, welcoming bohemian feel. Food is simply outstanding! I had a localy sourced brat with carmelized onions touch of balsamic and island syrup and melted gouda...crazy good! Even the side of slaw was interesting and delicious.. My wife's meal was equally well thought out and delicious. What really puts Fiddlers over the top is the friendly service. We had lunch here while spending the day biking on Washington Island. It is billed as an "adventurer's oasis" and I would consider that an apt description. Biking up to it, at first glance you don't even realize you have arrived unless you notice the small handmade sign at ground level welcoming you to the small unassuming building. There is also quite a collection of eclectic decor (aka junk) decorating the yard. I was pleasantly surprised to discover there were multiple options for vegetarians, even though there were as many, if not more, libation selections. Be warned, however, that since this is on an island that they may run out of items so be prepared for a second choice. All four of us enjoyed our food and beer. If you are a fan of Guinness, you will love that it is on tap. Also be warned that it is cash only! Great break for lunch on a day spent on the island. read more

If the crumbling piano in the front yard doesn't tip you off, one step inside will leave no doubt. Fiddler's Green put the "e" in eclectic. Not to mention entertaining, enjoyable and exceptionally delicious. It's a quirky place, filled with a motley collection of period funkiness, watched over by an ancient dog who sleeps on a bearskin covered couch. Yet it all seems to work. This was our first visit to Washington Island and Fiddler's Green quickly become our favorite destination. The place seems to be a direct extension of Kate, the proprietor, cook, and master of ceremonies who welcomed us as if we were old friends. We had an enchanting first evening mingling with a colorful mix of locals and tourists over pints of hard cider, listening to music on the lawn where an aged travel trailer has been reborn as a mainstage. We returned the next day for lunch and I enjoyed some very tender beef tenderloin medallions with a horseradish sauce that had a tasty kick. My wife had the duck breast sandwich that was equally savory. We couldn't decide which we liked better. The gingered carrots where a big hit too. Day two brought us back for a second visit. I happily tucked into the Traditional Gyro while my wife enjoyed the stuffed salmon. We finished with fresh picked cherry pie. The menu is small but, like the place, original, and there are options for vegetarians and carnivores alike. But bring cash, as this is a no plastic zone. We're looking forward to returning to Fiddler's Green next year for another helping of its laid back hipness and to have a pint with our new old friend Kate. read more

We chose this restaurant based off of the description in the map you get on the ferry. We. Love. It. The service was excellent, the food was amazingly delicious, and the charm is there in spades. We ordered the beef tenderloin sandwich and spicy tortilla chips. The chips were fresh, thin and crispy. The beef was tender and the horseradish Brie was the perfect compliment. We will be back every time we make it to the island. (Also, an earlier tipper commented on the price of a pint, they are IMPERIAL pints, which means they are 20 oz, not 16. You can have plans and go there only to find them closed to go to the fair or to the play or something. Really cute place with a fun vibe. We went on a Friday night and there was a three man band playing. They were good! A little bit of an older crowd. The tapas plates are very small portions. You're better off getting a sandwich. I wanted the salmon sandwich but they were out, bummer. The gyro sandwich was plump and tasty. Our server Lois was quite entertaining. She corrected me. Instead of 'can I get another glass of wine' I should have said may I' geez. She asked if we wanted spicy chips or regular. We ordered spicy. No spice to the chips. The building housing Fiddler's Green used to be my favorite shop as a girl. Later, I met Kate (the owner) in her capacity as a (wonderful) hairstylist on the island. When I heard she'd bought the building and was making it into a pub of sorts, I was thrilled! I don't get in here as often as I would like while on the island, but it's always great when I do. Apparently the only place to get a Guinness on island (true or not?), the food is delicious and the company always entertaining and they have wi-fi, which is an island rarity. Not sure where to begin...so we will start at the beginning! Mind blown. We found this hidden gem based off of Yelp reviews and did a spontaneous trip to Washington Island. Atmosphere is eclectic and comfortable, service was outstanding...drink menu is A+. The food....holy cow....wonderful! My tenderloin medallion sandwich was so wonderful I canceled our dinner reservations and ordered a second sandwich to go! The mozzarella, basil and tomato sandwich was also amazing. One of the items on my bucket list was to camp on Rock Island. For our last meal that wasn't dehydrated camp food, we decided to patronize Fiddler's Green. I called two days before to make sure they were open when we were on the island. Kate was very friendly and helpful, and yes, they were open at the time we got there. We arrived at about 1700 hours. Kate said "you must be the birthday boy". There was a group of women there who were a singing group called the Gesso. Kate led them to sing happy birthday to me. The women were excellent singers and gave me the best rendition of the song I have ever heard. Then we were told the restaurant wasn't open for another half hour. Did we stomp off in a major snit? No, we took the time to visit the Stavkirke church. We got back to the restaurant and were seated in a cozy alcove. Started with a nice glass of wine and checked out the menu. There is a variety of dishes suitable for vegetarians. There were two specials that day, I had a Mediterranean plate featuring stuffed grape leaves. My wife had the trout. Both meals were outstanding! Ignore the whiney people with entitlement issues and try this place out. You will have a great experience and a great meal. Kate, you rock! read more

My brother recommended that we eat at Fiddler's Green when we went to the Island this month. He was right on. We went on a Saturday night so were able to enjoy the jam session of local musicians. The food was wonderful. Everyone in our party had the Salmon Wellington with Gorgonzola cream sauce and walnuts, except for me. We had called in advance and since I have a nut allergy the very accommodating proprietor made mine without the nuts. We started with a salad that had dried cherries and cheese mixed with the greens, dressed with a light tasty vinaigrette The salmon dish was delicious, fresh tasting and moist. For dessert we had cherry cobbler that made me want to lick my plate. The red wine we had was reasonable and very drinkable, The Stump Jump Vintage 2011. After dessert we had a glass of port, again very enjoyable. When we return to Washington Island we will go to Fiddler's Green again, hopefully for more than one meal. read more

For an offbeat, eclectic vibe, visit Fiddler's Green. Though they offer only beer and wine, the selections are delicious and well thought out. Enjoy tasty homemade appetizers and munchies like hummus and pita and panini sandwiches in the Mermaid Lounge or Secret Garden some of creatively decorated rooms in this surprisingly large space. Live music played by local musicians in "jam sessions" add to the hippy-salon atmosphere. You'll come in for a quick drink but will end up staying all night, making new friends and digging on the Island Life. read more

OK, here's the deal: You're on a remote island about as far north as you can go without getting left for dead in the woods. You must adjust your expectations accordingly. The best thing about The Green is the atmosphere. I could spend an entire day here. From the decor, to the games, to the drinks. Nothing like several Black Velvets (hard cider and Guinness) to get the day/night off to the right pace. Good paninis, great salad, mediocre everything else. Don't have the Greek Pastitsio...terrible (dry, tasteless). The salmon was extremely dry (it's frozen). They should serve it marinated and smothered in the great soy glaze that they serve it with. The pizza is satisfactory...if not good. But the place is fun. And there's not a lot of stuff to do (with any (real) class) on the island. They seem to always have music...which is a great touch. Just go, hang out, don't worry about the clock, and let is all sink in. read more

This was probably the worst dining experience I've ever had. A woman on the ferry ride over recommended it as the best place on the island to go for lunch (and given that we saw her there at another table, either she doesn't get out much or she works for the place and lures unsuspecting tourists to their doom). Now, to be fair, an overwhelmed waiter explained that he and the aspiringly-termed "chef" were the only two working (except for the guitarist entertaining hungry and annoyed patrons - who, in retrospect, would have been better utilized behind the counter). But we were content - for a while, at least - to play cards and the many games in the establishment and to sip the on-tap local IPA, which, when it finally arrived, was quite excellent. This would all be worth it, we reasoned, when the food arrived. Of course the three most interesting menu jtems were unavailable. So we had settled for gyros and motz & tomato sandwiches. An hour in, two sandwiches came out. An order of hummus and slightly warmed stale supermarket pita. Then a third sandwich. We patiently awaited the fourth. Which must have required a trip to the store because twenty five minutes later, after two inquiries, it finally arrived. And within 20 seconds we determined that the meat on it had turned. And the angry and defensive "chef" demanded to speak with the diner about it. They took it off our bill but by that point no one could stomach the microwaved thin strips of freezer-burned meat (even the non-rancid ones) or the rubbery mozzarella. All served with generic bulk corn chips (we could see them hurriedly open the bags) and even then they were stale. Come on folks, if you're that short-staffed and don't have the pantry to back it up, don't open. Or don't serve food. This would be a charming place to have a beer. If you're looking for non-liquid sustenance as well, plan to go elsewhere. I get entirely what another reviewer said about island expectations, but even folks on the space station eat better than this. read more
