This is a scam company and will rip you off. A few weeks after sending them my hard drive, they informed me that they had recovered my data and were requesting payment. Five weeks later, I received my hard drive, powered it up, and it was defective in exactly the same way as it was before. I contacted them by e-mail and phone, but they were unresponsive. Finally, they sent me a long "report" that they claim to have generated while working on my hard drive, which determined that they could not recover any data. I looked online and found that this is a generic report they send to make it look like they did a bunch of work. They have refused to refund my money claiming that "services were rendered." FDR provided a very professional and valuable service by recovering the data on my external hard drive. The only downside was that it was considerably more expensive than I was initially led to believe. I had a great experience with Fields Data. They were more expensive than some, but you truly get what you pay for in data recovery. They recovered 95% of my data off a dead drive with bad sectors. Absolutely do not use their services. I paid $2k+ priority to have them return send me a stick way later than was promised with less than 5% of the data. They called often and hassled for payment, and did not recover any of the important data I paid thousands of dollars for. They didn't even return the drive. They're horrible. read more

After I turned in another drive to recover and paid $600 Emily the CSR ghosted me and after numerous attempts I still don't know what happened to my hard drive recovery. I contacted Fields Data Recovery regarding a laptop that had failed and used eMMC chip memory instead of a standard hard drive. They were informed in both email and conversation that the issue was that the power supply on the mother board had failed and the computer used not a hard drive but eMMC chip memory. The service I requested was a recovery of the files from the eMMC chip. Fields assured me this was not a problem, that they did this all the time, and that such services start at, and usually cost $199. They also stated that I would get a list of the files that could be recovered, and there would be no charge if not successful. I shipped the unit to Fields and several days after shipping, contacted them as I had not heard from them. After two phone conversations I received a call with a message from their engineers asking if we had removed the hard drive prior to shipping. I explained again that there was no hard drive, it was an eMMC memory chip. I then got a call from them stating that the unit required a completely different procedure, that it was not at the right office for such a procedure (called a chip off) and that the procedure would cost $960 dollars, the bulk of which was payable in advance, was non refundable, and that there was no guarantee of success. Thus, I came to the following conclusions - The personnel answering the phone had either ignored my statements about the eMMC chip storage or were ignorant as to what it was. If they were ignorant, then they should have escalated the case to someone who understood. - The engineers who worked on my computer ignored the case file notes. - The engineers who worked on my computer could not recognize an eMMC storage system (note these are supposed to be top talent computer storage personnel). I also received a letter from them that did not accurately represent the issues, but rather said that the drive (again, no drive) needed to be sent to the R&D division, have parts procured and replaced, be put in a clean room, etc. etc. etc. none of which is part of the chip off procedure, or what I had been told on the phone. I asked for the laptop to be sent back to me, at which point I was told it would cost $60, and that there was no less expensive option. This is at odds with their letter to me where they acknowledged that it was a laptop I was sending, and stated specifically that offered a free USPS return option should I not want to go forward. When I paid the $60 the person who took my money could not tell me when the unit would ship. When I did get my tracking number I found that it was shipped via UPS ground (despite being told in email that I would receive it that day - overnight) which at full retail cost was $11.04 (I am sure that as a large customer they have a substantial discount). So it would appear that the rest of the money was a "fee" for them looking at the laptop, figuring out that it was what I told them, and telling me it would cost almost a $1000.00. When we received the laptop back we found it had been packed in a random box, 10 times the size of the laptop, with a single layer of bubble wrap and no other packing so basically the laptop was loose in the box (note, it had been shipped in a padded, packed box made for laptops). Additionally all the screws that were removed to open the unit had not been replaced. I have attempted to complain to Fields about some of these issues but their response has been to ignore my comments and rather attempt to place all blame on me for simply being unhappy with the price. I am unhappy with the price. I am more unhappy that I was mislead, that I feel this is bait and switch, that despite being given proper information it was ignored, that the letter to authorize work presented a false list, that I feel I was charged for it being examined, that I was told it was express shipping and it was not, that it was so poorly packed for return and the poor poor level of customer service. I would judge the practices of this company to be exceptionally deceptive. Their strategy is to get the hardware and then convince you of the need to pay them. And then when you say no and complain, they become hostile and uncooperative. AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS. read more

Avoid them at all cost! They are quick to advertise $199.00 to recover your data. After they had my hard drive, the price went up to almost $1000.00. When I told them I was unable to pay that price, they sent back the inside of my hard drive, but just the guts, not the entire hard drive the way I sent it to them. I called the about it. The customer rep said that they should not have returned it like that and they would fix it... she opened a ticket for me... The next guy that called said they would send me a label and I could ship it back to them, they would put it together and mail it back to me. Then a few days go by and the call again and say "never mind" they just want to ship me the parts and have me put it back together. WHAT THE HECK? Don't use these guys. She called me within seconds after I completed my online request form. She was very pleasant to work with. Let's call this the bait and switch... After they received my drives, my account moved over to Eric Keck. Here's where the arrogant, pushy, and threatening part comes in. I sent them 3 drives and the invoice was over $2K to have them "attempt" to recover the data. It took me a few weeks to come up with the $2K. All the while Eric was very pushy and kept threatening me that I better pay him now or else... Once I made the payment, their communication was poor at best. They recovered that data from 1 of my 3 drives. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THESE GUYS YOUR MONEY! There are plenty of reputable companies to work with and this isn't one of them. read more

Most of my data was recovered, but couldn't be opened, and some type of files like .indd, .ai, .pdf weren't even there. Those were the ones that I most wanted to recover, they were projects that I did during these 2 years. I accidentally deleted a 100GB continuous Quicktime video file from an ExFAT formatted SD card, using a Mac I tried Data Rescue 5, Stellar Data Recovery Premium & Videorepair, all to no avail. I was able to recover the whole file, but not able to fix whatever needed to be fixed to make it play properly. Audio was fine but video was corrupt. I ended up shipping the SD card to to Fields Data Recovery. Long story short, they ended up quoting me the upper end of their sliding scale, which was supposed to be based on recovery/repair difficulty ($1200!). I knew that this should be a pretty simple recovery, so I was not pleased. But I asked them if they would guarantee that the file would play until the end, uncorrupted. At that point they stopped replying to me, after having emailed me daily trying to solicit my business when I started inquiring. It took three weeks to get my SD card back, with no communication from them regarding my shipment order received, tracking info, etc. Meanwhile I had made a disk image using Apple Disk Utility, and started talking with Brian at $300 Data Recovery in LA. He was incredibly responsive & helpful, and after seeing the recovered directory list from Fields he was willing to guarantee a complete & successful recovery, which they were in fact able to achieve. My total cost was around $320 including shipping a recovery drive. I can't possibly say enough good things about them. TL;DR: Fields Data Recovery sucks. $300 Data Recovery are AWESOME! read more

I have to give these people credit for recovering an entire hard drive of irreplaceable data off my crashed laptop drive for a total of $650 ($400 deposit, $250 for equipment and labor). Given the price gouging out there for this kind of service, I thought this a great price and service especially when all the files proved to be uncorrupted and fully usable. On this basis, I'd send anyone to FDR as the go-to service in the St. Louis area. Hence the three stars. The downside is erratic-to-terrible customer service, of one-or-less-star quality. I was first assigned to an 'agent' (Emily) who started out very helpful but later mysteriously refused to respond to any of my calls or emails (we'd had no unpleasant exchange I was aware of). Several anxious calls brought me in touch with more people, each of whom told me I should deal with them from then on but who later also proved unreachable, and I was directed back to the silent Emily. After calling her unsuccessfully three times in one afternoon, getting promises that she would call me only to hear at last that "she's left for the day," I finally yelled at someone, which brought the supervisor (Cody?) to the phone, who seemed quite sensible but could only say he'd inquire. It seemed FDR's show of good and computerized customer relations was just that - all show, little substance, lots of holes. Most confusing: at some point I received a long email from unresponsive Emily loaded with technical detail about what FDR technicians had done to get the data off the drive but reporting that nothing had worked, the data was unrecoverable, and FDR would be shipping the dead drive back to me. As by then I was traveling in Europe, I swallowed my disappointment and didn't respond right away. I was accordingly quite startled two weeks later when out of the blue I got another email saying that they had recovered the data and would be shipping it to me, and just needed the shipping address. When I called to find out what was going on, Cody said they had no record of Emily's email but maybe the engineers had seen that he was involved and had kicked in harder to succeed with my disk. Shortly after that, my disk and the recovery file turned up in my mailbox. Why should it take the boss's name on a case to get a full effort from technicians when it's precisely such expertise that they are advertising? Why should a case agent refuse to communicate with the customer to which she'd been assigned? Why does the left hand of that office not know what the right hand is doing? I can only suggest that anyone dealing with FDR be prepared to do battle with what seems like a completely mangled office culture. With FDR, you might score a great data recovery for a truly fair price, but based on my experience, and other feedback here, you should be prepared to fight for it. read more

After transferring my whole computer onto a few year old external hard drive and starting new I went to get some documents off it and it wouldn't mount to my Mac. They respond quickly and offer potential price and offered to look at the old drive and send it back if I was not comfortable with their pricing. When all was done the price was affordable for me small business and they sent all my data back on a new external hard drive that was formatted to my Mac. This ****** company took my drive in as well as my back up provided by me so they can quote me. After they analyzed the drive they quoted me $1200. I was thinking **** that so I asked them to send it back. They then wanted to sell me hella bad so they quoted me $640 to cover the cost of equipment purchased. After 2 weeks l receive only my drive with only 600gb out of 1.7tb data. I understand my data was corrupt, on the quote call they GARENTEED the recovery or refund will be provided. So only some data recovered, I was also missing my backup drive I provided them. Apparently it's lost and it's been for days. They keep lying saying they will ship it out as they have it. Filed a complaint, but they declined it very easily. Sounds like a scam. They looking for a judicial fade. read more

I called to cancel my free diagnostic evaluation but was told it'd be "dangerous" to stop the process, as it was already being diagnosed when I called.. they assured me that my hard drive would not be compromised and would be returned in the same condition as when I sent it to them. After my diagnostic was finished, my price quote was emailed to me, and I called up the lab tech to apologize for not having $900.00 to pay for the job and to please send me my hard drive back. I received my hard drive (WD My Passport) in a poorly packaged box with the tape coming off, inside was my hard drive and a small sheet of bubble wrap, no paperwork or invoice explaining what they did and why. Then I plugged it in to check the status of my hard drive; Before sending it to FDR, I was able to see my hard drive in 'Disk Management' using win. 7, but now it's flashing repeatedly and for all I know, they recovered my data and still have it..? I feel so "numb" and just generally disillusioned really. Bottom line; until I can find out if there's still a chance to fix my drive and recover my data, the only thing I can do is vent out on this review, and be patient. It's truly frightening to think that if they read this review, they'll sabotage my privacy, hack my emails, ...they've left me with this impression. Do not trust this company. Communication was poor throughout my experience. Questionable charging/quoting practices. Not actually sure if they really did anything, or just took the money and sent me pictures of a disassembled drive. Sent a solid state drive in that was no longer detected by BIOS. They asked for $1600 up front, then $100 after the repair was done. I was able to "talk them down" (although I think they just grossly over-quoted to make me think I was getting a good deal) to $800 up front. After I sent my drive in, they performed "diagnostics" and said there was a 90% data recovery chance. After some time, they said they had to perform more advanced methods and that this method (something about connecting the drive to some board they have) had an 80% chance of data recovery. I received zero updates over a period of a month. I had to keep asking for status updates. Once I finally got a response, it was an email with pictures of the drive taken apart, a vague description (PDF report) of what was done to the drive, and a "Sorry, we couldn't do anything". Following this, I asked for some sort of refund on good faith. In their agreement, there is a line stating that they can refund partial or whole amounts at their discretion. I thought since they did not actually do anything for me, this would be no problem at least getting something back (I was willing to take the new hard drive they would have sent with my recovered data and be ok). That was not the case. After being instructed to fill out a "formal complaint", I was told I would have a response in 5-14 business days. Nearly three weeks later, I emailed the person who sent me the link to the "formal request" for an update. 5 days later, I finally received a response. The response essentially said "We did what we were obligated to do". No hope of any good faith with customers there. read more

Incredibly terrible experience. Sent in an external hard drive for the risk free quote. When the quote came back at $1000, we declined and had to request it be returned to us, repeatedly, for months. my external drive went kaput. I contacted Field Data Recovery and they promptly responded with clear instructions and what to expect once they had the unit. Within a day of receiving it they contacted me and explained what the problem was and how they proposed to repair it. I'd lost irreplaceable video material. My remaining hope was the missing files might be on a dead external hard drive I'd found hidden away in my office. I mailed that drive to Fields DataRecovery in St. Louis from San Diego, CA. Their diagnostic service located the lost data at no cost to me, emailing me a list of the files they'd found on the drive. DO NOT USE THEM! First of all, they led me on with $199 price to recover my data, then when they had my hard-drive, they jacked up the cost to $900. Then I got them down to $700, based on the fact that they said they could recover my 4000 CAD files- sent me a screen shot of the CAD files that they said could see. After I paid them, got a replacement drive back with supposedly all my info, I could not find the CAD files that they said they could recover!!!!! Their answer- "Sorry I apologize for the misinformation between you and your account manager ".....and they refused to refund me the money.......bait and switch? SCAM I sent my hard drive to them in April of 2017, they called when they received it and said they would check it out and let me know the cost, they advertised that if the cost was to high they would send it back. they quoted me $1000. That was way more than I expected and I told him I could not afford it, he said he'd send it back - then later came back and said his boss let him discount to $800 - still to steep for me so I asked him to send it back. I hadn't received it after several months so I reached back out and he said he did not have my address, not sure how he wouldn't it was on the form I filled out. Anyway I sent the address, still never received it, I have been reaching out for months and am not getting any responses. I don't have the hard drive to this day. read more

They never delivered the file they were supposed to. When told that I at lease just wanted them to mail my computer back to me, they refused.
