My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place after a recommendation from a free-spirited amiga. We walked into the restaurant and it was very dark. The atmosphere was very nice with some elegant spanish music in the background. Chips & Salsa: OK chips with some solid homemade salsa. Only problem after you have one round your paying for the next one (which is half of the original serving). Guac: I think it was amazing. The best I've ever had. Alcoholic Beverages: Dos Equis: Only have the Amber! Dulce Fiesta: Well made & Strong Margarita: AMAZING Chicken Fajiatas: EXCELLENTE!!! The freshest ingredients with the best spices. Tacos: Very Solid. Chicken tacos were better than the beef. Service: The service wasn't very good. The waiters/waitresses were not focused on making our experience memorable. They had an attitude when we asked for more chips and salsa! STINGY! Overall: Our experience was pretty good because the food was very good and the best part of the meal was getting the bill! False advertising!!! Ordered Vegetarian Fajitas for lunch priced at $10.95 under vegetarian options. Bill charged $13.95. Server told me that they charge more for Fajitas. 3.5 stars is just about the right rating. Since Yelp doesn't have half stars, I'm leaning slightly towards 3. The food was mostly average. I ordered a combo that included a cheese enchilada, a chicken enchilada verde, and a shredded beef chimichanga. The chimichanga was the highlight of the plate. If I come back, I'm just ordering those. The enchiladas were fine, but nothing special. My friend just got the cheese enchiladas and was disappointed. I can see why--it wasn't a great cheese enchilada, but it was still palatable. Rice and beans were tasty. The chips and salsa were great, but I think I remember refills costing extra (boo!). My table of eight mowed through the chips we were brought, so I wish they had just refilled them for free. For dessert, we ordered fried ice cream and flan. The presentation of the fried ice cream is flashy, but the cornflake coating was a little soggy. The flan was decent. Service was good considering we showed up close to closing time. The restaurant is tiny, but cozy and clean. I'd probably go back just to give it another chance. read more

This place is a gem. We have been going since it opened twelve years ago. We I about once a week and have never been disappointed. My husband gets the carne con Rajas every time. It is a perfectly seasoned and cooked steak with and amazing spicy creamy pepper sauce. Anything with the Rajas is amazing. I get the enchiladas verdes camarones. It is super unique and so tasty. Their tortilla are perfect and their sauce is so flavorful. You can get any two combination of rice beans or salad. I love their little side salad it is always topped with the freshest avocado. Guac is fab. Best salsa ever. Sangria is killer. And they give you a shot of 43 liqueur after your meal. Only complaint is they are stingy on water. Love will always love. Our new favorite restaurant! We went here based on the rave reviews and recommendations from friends. Everything good we heard and read is true! Really cool, quaint and unique decor. Friendly and family owned. The owner actually brought our meals out and asked how we were. The guacamole was one of the best we have had. So good, could have made a meal out of that alone! I ordered the chicken nachos and they were amazing. My husband ordered the chimechungas and while they were not what he was used to, he enjoyed every bite. He said the refried beans and rice were the best he had had, too. Even at 1:00 in the afternoon on Sunday, this place was filling up with guests. So good! So full! So happy! Another hole in the wall Mexican joint, but the food is very good here. It is authentic Mexican so no hard tacos here. The sangria and margaritas are great and they even give you a sweet tasting aperitif shot after your meal. The staff was friendly and it wasn't bad pricing for what you got. What a strange collection of reviews. One reviewer has had good experiences "over the years" then has one "bad" one so the place get a terrible rating? If you are expecting Tex-Mex learn to live with disappointment. This is pretty basic actual Mexican fare. It's excellent. I particularly like their mole sauce. The staff is friendly and attentive. They are accommodating to larger groups which isn't easy given the relatively small size of the place. They are also very good with small children. I find this place charming and very earthy. I can't say enough good things about Cinco and anytime you go there the chances are many of the other patrons will be Mexican. That should tell you something. read more

Have been coming here for many years and the food is fresh, authentic and delish and the staff and owners friendly and excellent hosts. A hole in the wall for sure but go here instead of the Royal Buffet right next door. I'm a salsa snob and theirs is excellent - love the cilantro. Have enjoyed many of their chicken and beef dishes from burritos to enchiladas to quesadillas oh and the excellent mole sauce. If your experience was less than stellar I encourage you to give them another try. The tacos have no seasoning taco bell tacos are better than Cinco Da Mayo's tacos. and the serving size is small. I had to go eat again after i left this restaurant and I'm a small girl. Also the meals are expensive for the size you get. -10 on a scale of 1-10. had to give it one star because i had no choice of zero stars. Never again will I go here, and I can't wait to tell everyone i know how bad it was. After moving to Columbia, CT from Seattle, Wa, my family and I have been looking for a casual place to eat that has good food. I looked up different restaurants, and this place received pretty good reviews, so I decided to go and check it out. I was not impressed upon entering as nobody greeted my family, and we had to figure out by asking others if we had to wait to be seated (you don't, you find a place and seat yourself). I was annoyed that the workers just stared and said nothing. Rude. Finally our waiter came over to take our order, he was unpleasant at best. When we received our food, our waiter said nothing to us, not even asking if we needed anything else (which I did) Again, rude. When I was able to flag him down and ask for what I needed, he acted like I was bothering him... Finally the food. It was actually good. I rated this place with 2 stars because the service was AWFUL, which makes for an unpleasant experience. I will not be dining in again, but will instead, order out (as I saw many other people doing). Bottom line: Good food, AWFUL service. Hope this helps. read more

This is our favorite Mexican resturant and we've tried quite a few. This is the place we regularly go with friends because the food is just outstanding. And it's always good! My favorite is the enchilladas Verdes but I've never had anything but great food here. The drinks are great too. I also love their salsa. Wonderful food and people. I drive all the way from Boston to come to this restaurant. Of course, my sister who lives in Willimantic is also a reason to visit, but I LOVE this restaurant. Mexican food is my favorite, I have lived in California and often visited the southwest where Mexican food is great, but Cinco de Mayo is the best Mexican restaurant I have been to east of the Mississippi. We always finish off the meal with a dramatically flaming fried ice cream to share and buy several containers of salsa to bring home. Check it out! read more

I'm so confused. Really confused. Why are there so many good reviews?? This place was one step above horrible. The chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. The sangria was disgusting--a splash of wine with orange juice and too much other booze. Didn't taste like traditional sangria at all. Sent it back and got a margarita on the rocks--this was better. We also got guac which was mediocre--not very fresh. Tasted like the avocado was out of a bag and they threw in fresh onions, cilantro and tomatoes just before serving. We got a #1 and #3. The #1 included a beef taco, shredded beef enchilada and beef burrito. The shredded beef couldn't be cut with a fork and was very tough. The beef taco was tasty and so was the rice. The #3 had a beef taco, cheese chili relleno and a chicken verde enchilada. The chile rellno was really delicious. The verde sauce was too smooth and pretty horrible. Overall, it was pretty bad. The service left something to be desired as well. We won't be back. read more

This is real, authentic Mexican food. It is not processed food nor is it full of salt. The ingredients are always fresh. If your palate is accustomed to the stuff served at Chilis or Margaritas, it may take a few visits to adjust your taste buds and really appreciate the food! The restaurant is small and quaint and decorated very tastefully. It is a breath of fresh air for those of us who dine frequently in eastern CT. I also must add that it is, without doubt, one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever been in. I love their chips and salsa...complimentary before every meal. The chips and salsa are fresh and flavorful. There are pieces of cilantro in the salsa. I am a fan of the chicken enchilada with red sauce but have also gotten the sampler platter.
