Northern California has the best in Mexican restaurants with this one. On vaca and was pleasantly surprised to find this gem of a place the day before they closed for vacations. The chicken tacos was amazing and I totally encourage you to have a tamale. It is delicious! The salas is the real deal, watch out the hot has a punch after a while. Delicious! After researching the reviews on Yelp, hubby and I shared the Customer Favorite Burrito and I had to try the Posole soup. The burrito is huge but don't let that make you think it's another one of those places that replaces quantity for quality. It was filled with so my flavor. We went with the red sauce on top but I asked for spicier salsa sides to try b/c we both like spicy. They gave us three to try and all were a hit. I have never had Posole soup before. It's pork and hominy with a slight kick-loved it! Honestly, I was expecting your average American version of Mexican food from this place but that was far from the case. They serve food fast. Every time I order from here it never lets me down. The food is delicious and the service is great. There has never been a time where the servers aren't constantly checking if we are ok. The atmosphere is is super authentic in comparison to the restaurants name. I had a carnitas plate which was excellent. It said "slow fried" but was more like slow roasted. Tender and tasty. The salsas were very good, and beans and rice fair to good. My wife's carne asada was a bit too well done (a thin steak type), but she's not the complainer type. The albondigas soup was excellent! Just walked out of this place. If I could give this place negative stars I would. We were sitting at the bar of the EMPTY restaurant waiting for a to-go order and my husband asked for a chelada. A normal Mexican drink - a beer with a salted rim and some hot sauce thrown in. Simple right?? The bartender just literally stared at him and told him quote " I really do not want to do that" And believe me there's no other way to say that without being a total fucking bitch. It's not as if she didn't know how to make one either. Unbelievable. The bartender was a young woman with shoulder length brown hair. Wtf? " I do not want to do that"??? And note : this was at 11 am. There was literally no one in there. Why did she think she could treat us this way? We aren't tweakers or something! We're a normal looking boring middle aged couple. I'm so pissed off I can hardly see. We got up and walked out without our food. If I'd stayed one minute longer I knew I'd blow my top. At this point I'm not sure how to handle this. First time there. I was a little skeptical about $12 burritos. Not anymore. Very well made. I had the carnitas wet burrito with red sauce and it was awesome. Super portion and great flavors. The meat was tiny bit too salty for my taste, but it didn't stop me from finishing the entire thing and then raving about it. I have eaten here on several occasions. We usually order and pick it up or have it delivered. The food is always good and they always package it perfectly. If I were just reviewing the food, it would be 5 stars. Went into the establishment for the first time and the experience was, well, terrible. Again, the food was great, the service was horrendous. The guy could not have seemed more irritated that he had to wait on us. Never once looked at us, rolling his eyes when asked a question and only was nice to us on our way out. The tables outside had not been cleaned off at least on this day. Makes me even want to reconsider choosing this place ever again, even if the food is good. read more

I've had the same order since I was a kid here, and the owner actually recognized me YEARS later. The staff is so friendly, my favorite being Sydney although I haven't seen her in a while. This was such a bust I am sorely disappointed this is the worst chili verde I ever had, chili verde bowls are my go to at Mexican restaurants I broke my diet for this porky goodness and I am so unhappy it does not have that verde flavor at all!!!! We went to the Grill about 10 or 12 years ago, we decided to risk returning. The food was edible. It was not what I would call good. It is about the normal level of restaurant fare in Eureka/Arcata - a 2 star sort of place. However, I down graded because the building needs to be freshened - the carpet has apparently not been changed since our last visit - Mexican restaurants usually don't have carpets, and in the Arcata bottoms - damp - replacing the carpet with tile would be a major improvement. If nothing else, it needs to be cleaned. The furniture is old. Back to the food, for the quality, it is definitely overpriced. The gold standard of Mexican in this area remains Tres peppers, I give it a three star - the food is edible and doesn't make you sick. The Grill is somewhere well below that standard, I had the Carne Asada - it was hard and dry from being overcooked - the rice and beans were probably a day old. The chips were stale, the salsa - not quite sure how to describe the salsa. All in all I think the restaurant has earned a 1 to 1.5 star rating. read more

The staff is nice. I ordered nachos with fish. I then ran to bathroom and vomited. Fish was rotten. Don't order the fish. They replaced my fish nachos with veggie nachos, and reduced ticket price. Two more trips to porcelaintown. I'm not sure why the lady that that wandered back with the veggie machos was laughing, but it kinda bothered me. Maybe I'm sensitive because of the wracking pain in my guts right now. I left. Received no 'hey, sorry buddy.' From them. Sooooooo they get this review. I'm home now, alternating between typing and running to dry heave in the loo. I suppose I'll polish this up and be more scathing when I'm well again. The other peoples foods looked good. I really want to give this place 5*'s bc the food was really yummy! But our waitress was kinda snooty, she even seemingly ignored us @ one point! The Latina who took our $ was very nice though & like I said the food was REALLY yummy so we'll definitely be back. And I could be wrong about her ignoring us, maybe she was just busy? (although it didn't look that way). Overall though she wasn't so bad that we wouldn't come back.
