A Perfect 25th Anniversary Celebration! My husband and I recently visited Fifty 44 with some friends to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and we were absolutely blown away! Whatever the new chef is doing in the kitchen, it is AMAZING. For our appetizers, we started with the Ahi Tacos and the Sweet Chili Wings. Both were outstanding. The tuna in the tacos was incredibly fresh and silky. The wings were perfectly crispy and had just the right amount of flavor without drowning in sauce--exactly how they should be! For our main courses, we ordered the Halibut and the Roasted Chicken. I can honestly say that the roasted chicken was the best I have ever had. My husband was equally thrilled with his halibut; he said it was cooked to absolute perfection, and the accompanying corn chowder was absolutely delicious. If you haven't been to Fifty 44 lately, you need to go check out the new chef's menu. A huge thank you to the team for making our anniversary dinner so special. We will definitely be back! read more

The atmosphere is amazing... anytime you can go inside a Frank Lloyd Wright building you should take advantage. I came for lunch with my daughter and a couple who are family friends. He is in a wheelchair and it was no problem at all getting in/out and sitting at a table. My daughter and I got the burger and it was very very delicious. The burger with fries and a couple beers will cost over $40. I know it's California but I just had a similar meal with 2 beers in another state and it was half the price. The service was OK. Definitely would expect a bit more professionalism from the staff at the price but they were friendly. Overall it was a nice experience and I would definitely come back! read more

Made a reservation for Mother's Day brunch. I had looked up their brunch menu online but saw nothing of a special menu for Mother's Day. Arrived at 10:30 and there was no one else in the restaurant. We were seated at a table against the back wall. This is the first thing that ticked me off. 1) I had a reservation, 2) no one else in restaurant. Why didn't they give us a nice table with a view? We sat down and began to look at the menu which was not the brunch menu I saw online, but a special Mother's Day 5 course breakfast at the cost of $77 each. We got up and walked out. We weren't even offered the regular brunch menu. May have stayed if we were. I have eaten at this restaurant before and it is very good, but $77 for breakfast is out of line in my book. read more

The bar is great! Adjacent to the restaurant, which is a Frank Lloyd Right design with gorgeous out door dining. We like the bar, the bar menu is short and sweet! Joe makes an excellent martini! This review is for FIFTY44 RESTAURANT. On what was supposed to be a special day to celebrate my daughter's graduation and a full scholarship to a top university, We thought we would celebrate and go to FIFTY44 RESTAURANT at Nakoma. The service treatment and food we received was horrific. I don't think my family and I have ever had a worse experience at a restaurant. The waitress was unfriendly and rude with sarcastic remarks. She brought the drinks out with no straws and mixed them up. The food came out at different times so far apart we did not eat together. My plate, the rice did not taste like it was thoroughly cooked, eggs overcooked, my daughter's hamburger was soggy and the couple plates of strawberry pancakes were also soggy and bland. On 2 of the breakfast plates some of the food was overcooked. When I told the waitress about my plate she responded by telling me "I'll tell the chef to come out here" and took my plate while I politely asked to have the menu, which she ignored. About 5 to 10 minutes later she brought out another round of plates, served them them started to walk back to the kitchen when I asked her again for a menu and she told me "I told you I'll be right back" by this time I was done and disgusted at everything with this restaurant. I didn't want anything and to just leave. Our waitress didn't even bring out the check she had someone else bring it out. The next day my family and I started to talk about the bad service and food, and I was just going to let it go.. untill I heard multiple people in my family also disgusted, and disappointed in the location I picked. So i decided to call and spoke to a new assistant manager, who told me she would talk to the manager of the restaurant And get back to me, which they never did. So I called a few days later and spoke to a general manager named Richard, and let me tell you. He was just as rude!!! His response was "well what do you want me to do about it" "and I have never had a complaint before and just the opposite" just very condescending remarks from him. I'm like your the GM you tell me, is this how you treat your customers ? No Apology no nothing from him. Couldn't believe his response. So I called back again to talk to the Manager of the restaurant and come to find out her name is Brooke and she is actually the chef that prepared our food that day and the restaurant manager. She was not happy to hear when i talked to her about the disappointment in the service and the food we received, she was really offended about the food when I TRIED explaining what happened, and instead of listening to what I was trying to tell her about the experience we had that day at the restaurant and to see what happened, she just over talked me with a bully voice and snarky remarks. Fir such a high quality restaurant the treatment towards their customers was and is disgraceful and disgusting. She also said she's NEVER had anyone ever say anything Negative regarding her food. So all in all this is why I never got a call back and not one person from Nakoma ever treated myself or my family with courtesy except my caucasian husband, when another waitress came out and personally thanked him and only him, and I'm the one who set this all up with reservations and did most of the talking with what was going on. And there was another 14 guest there too. Now I'm starting to wonder what really went on and why were we treated so badly?. I wish I could rate them with ZERO stars because this place was they worst restaurants we have been too. YES it was that bad!! I do not recommend. They ruined my daughter's celebration lunch and no one cared when I tried to bring it to their attention. Oh I'm sure they'll try and twist the truth I wouldn't put it past them after all this. If you're looking for a super romantic or high end meal, this is the place! The chef uses the finest ingredients and does such a wonderful job from appetizers to entrées. Stayed at the Nakoma Lodge ( Home of the famous Dragon golf course ) the California wildfires were in high gear and Covid-19 restrictions only allowed minimal indoor eating. The Nakoma Lodge said to show up at 7:30 and they would accommodate me for dinner. They were fully booked but their manager, Angela found a way to take care of us after hearing our situation. She is a special and thoughtful manager. The smoke was horrendous but she made an executive decision to stop outdoor dining to protect her staff and customers.. Great call. Nevertheless she found a way to help us. Food is the best in the area and the wait staff were attentive and helpful. Will return. read more

The chef here definitely knows what they're doing. The elk in particular was excellent. Staff is very friendly and with a bit more training could equal the quality of the food. Very nice setting as well, although if you sit outside you need the right table to avoid getting sun in your eyes the entire meal (the closer you can get to the grass, the better!!!) read more

We wanted to love this restaurant but it missed the mark in a lot of ways. We rarely go out to nice restaurants like this and had high expectations but sadly it was not what we had hoped it would be. While waiting for our reservation, we ordered three drinks from the bar, an old fashioned, a glass of Chardonnay and a Shirley Temple and the total bill without tip was almost $50. I wouldn't mind paying that but the wine tasted old and/or watered down, the glasses were dirty and my husband's old fashioned also tasted off. We then ordered dinner and the service was incredibly slow! We were seated at 7pm and didn't leave the restaurant until after 9. My dad ordered a draft beer which they brought to him in a glass 3/4 of the way full and said sorry we ran out. The beer was as flat as could be and they served it anyway! Not to mention the food was mediocre at best. The best part about the meal was the view (and the company, of course!). If you're looking for a nice place to eat, I'd go elsewhere. Way overpriced for the service and quality of food you get!!! read more

Short getaway from Reno to this little gem of a place (well Nakoma Lodge... which i can't seem to find on Yelp but I found the restaurant we ate at so here goes a little of both). The lodge where we stayed is across the street and down the hill from the restaurant and bar. The spa and pro shop are also in the same building as the restaurant. The view out back is awesome. Has a nice size deck with seating in the warmer months. You can see the golf course and abundance of trees, if you like that sort of thing. I'm no tree hugger, but I like this view of trees. So pretty, see accompanying photos. The bar area is comfortable. There is a couch and chairs along with a nice clean bar, friendly bartender Frank. I ordered wine and my mansicle ordered a coke because he was driving, and Frank gave that to us on the house, which was a nice touch. We then went into the dining room which is open to a giant fireplace in the middle, it's definitely a Native American feel and the natural rocks and wood are very pretty. Dinner itself was good, but we were disappointed with the appetizer we chose, which was the calamari. I felt like I couldn't taste the calamari at all, that it was solely the breading on the outside. It did come mixed with red and green bell peppers that were also breaded. For dinner, I ordered the half chicken with mashed potatoes and veggies. The size of this meal was double what I could eat. It wasn't the best thing ever, but i felt like it was definitely above average for the price and size. Mansicle got stuffed pork loin with fennel, onions, spinach and topped with feta cheese, happened to have the same sides as me. He liked it. He is a man of few words. He also had leftovers and he is 6/3 240 pounds so he can eat. We decided to order dessert, even though we didn't really have room, but there was a creme brûlée trio on the menu that we could not pass up. It came in three small but deep dishes in flavors of peach, strawberry and vanilla. Vanilla and peach were along the lines of some of the best creme brûlée Ive ever had (which is a lot because it's our favorite) I could have lived without the strawberry, but we still finished that anyway. Overall satisfied with the restaurant and surroundings and we will return. The service was attentive and our water glasses were filled as soon as they appeared anyone had drank out of them. Granted there were only a couple other couples in the restaurant, as it was a Wednesday night. The lodge is cozy, very nice rooms, continental breakfast. I wouldn't go as far as to say I would pay full price for a room though cause they are pricey in peak season. read more

Horrible service. We made weekend plans and placed a reservation a week in advance for dinner. Two days later I receive an email stating that they canceled my reservation because they have a private event and they didn't block off their schedule ahead of time. The Wigwam Room did not disappoint! This beautiful establishment set in the pine forests outside Portola, California offers a setting that can't be rivaled in neighboring towns. The Frank Lloyd Wright designed building added a sense of historic flare as we were seated by the 360 degree fireplace. Winter dining hours are Thursday through Sunday, with breakfast only on Sunday's, so that would be the only thing you have to plan for while visiting the Wigwam during their winter hours. We actually stayed at the Nakoma Lodge, so we wouldn't have to rush back to Reno. The menu was diverse with great seafood and tasty appetizer selections, to true finned, 2 legged to four legged selections as well. The menu is posted on their website. Visiting many small towns and villages in my travels, you always have to remember ease of availability and quality of food. They were able to offer a variety for any palate. My sweetheart had the special that night which was the King Salmon seared in teriyaki served in a traditional Japanese iron bowl. I had the Coq au Vin which had the deep richness and warmth of true French comfort food. The waitstaff was very attentive and friendly and checked on us regularly. read more

The ambiance is incredible with gorgeous views of the surrounding trees and mountains and the huge indoor fireplace makes for a perfect dining experience. I have food restrictions and asked if I could make changes to the meal that I ordered and the chef came to the table, she could not have been nicer, to find out what my food restrictions were so she could make sure not to add anything I could not eat. Arrived freezer burnt and with a feeding cold plate...which explains the freezer burn, the salad was in the fridge prepped and covered in Saran Wrap. Sent back. No further questions asked. Here's hoping the main course is good!! Alas... NOPE. Microwaved and burnt dried out meatloaf. With a piping hot plate... Leading you to realize yet again.. This $19 meal was prepped and MICROWAVED. ALSO... Extremely mushy. Chicken penne pasta... Cold and bland. $23? Finally sent both meals back pretty much untouched. Again, no mention from the server or management. My girlfriend and I stayed at the Nakoma Lodge this week end and had dinner at the Wigwam Room located in the clubhouse. We will definitely be back. I had the King Salmon for dinner, and it was outstanding and the service was great. This was our go to place. We had a-lot of great visits there. The view is beautiful. The restaurant is a site to see. The food on the other hand fell short on this visit. I wasn't going to leave this review but after numerous attempts to speak with management I decided to do it after they made zero effort to contact me. I'll make the next part quick and get right to it. We ate there on 12/18/21 for dinner. My medium steak was well done, my sons pasta with chicken was buttered pasta with no chicken, my wife's chicken was still moving... yes it was raw inside. I couldn't believe it. The Pinot was vinegar so they brought a replacement and the second was vinegar. The server Athena was wonderful. No refund was given because they said the manager had to approve and they left for the day. I believe it because I have spent one month trying to contact them and they just don't care. Serving raw chicken is a major health hazard and I hope everyone stays away. Good luck to anyone brave enough to eat there. read more

I ordered a rib eye steak which had good flavor and cooked just right but the meat had so much gristle in it I had to keep spitting it out. Our waiter told us the special desert was marrion berry pie a la mode and I saw it served to a table while eating my salad and it looked good. I waited 15 minutes after ordering it and finally asked our waiter about the desert. He checked on it and came back saying the kitchen didn't know how to prepare it, ugh, how hard is it to cut a piece of pie and put an ice cream scoop on it! I told the waiter to forget it, just bring the check. He was kind enough to not charge for a glass of wine in lieu of the pie. The meal was just ok but not for the price. I will not be going back! I posted a rather scathing review several days ago and although the description was accurate I would be remiss if I didn't follow up. The management went out of their way to make things right and were just as disappointed as we were. I got a personal call from Dan (the GM) with an apology and he explained some issues that were being corrected. I'll be happy to go back and give them another shot. We we're 2 for dinner and was pleasantly surprised at how efficient the staff was from seating us, to taking our order, serving our order quickly, checking in constantly and with clean up. Restaurant 40% full with customers. Our Ceasar salad, roasted chicken and lasagna we're all very very good. Worthy in many fine restaurants. Definitely people should try it! read more

My husband and I had dinner here last weekend for our one year anniversary :) First, the staff was great (although it was clear they were training new staff which can always make a dining experience feel slightly cumbersome), our waitress Tiffany was personable and knowledgeable. She let us taste a number of wines before we decided what to order and was sweet enough to talk us through many of the entrees when we had questions. Now, there was a bit of a problem with how both of our entrees were cooked, nothing wrong with the dishes themselves, the flavors were amazing, just the meat was not right on either plate. But the problems were handled so quickly and so professionally that we didn't feel like it affected the mood or outcome of the night at all! We were checked on frequently, our water glasses were never empty, and we enjoyed our meal tremendously. The floor manager, Lang, was fabulous. He took care of us in an engaging and competent manner. We will come back whenever we are in the area and would most definitely recommend the restaurant to everyone! read more

Been coming here for years and always a great meal UNTIL last night. Every item our party ordered was HORRIBLE. French onion soup was a disgusting bowl of mush. Carbonara pasta was soupy and tasteless. Rib eye steak wasn't a half inch thick (no exaggeration) and cardboard. We waited an hour for that disgusting mess. Granted, they didn't charge us but that doesn't make up for it. New chef needs to be fired! I wouldn't serve a stranded dog that quality of food. read more

Our kids went here for their Honeymoon dinner, so my wife an I wanted to surprise them with us buying them Appetizers and drinks. I called the restaurant at 4:30pm to set up. The girl that answered said she didn't know how she could do it, but somebody would call me back to set up. There reservation was for 7:30pm. No phone call yet so I called back at 6:45 explain to nice gentleman situation apparently the number on website is to resort and he explained that he couldn't get me to the restaurant directly and somebody would be calling me. Still no call. 8:05 somebody called and I explained what I wanted to do and that it was to late, she said so do you want to do dessert. I said no and she said that she would have somebody call me. 8:10 the bartender called and said that my son and daughter-in-law are not there,they have gone to each table of 2 and asked if they were my sons name. We are texting with the kids and they sent pics of restaurant and pics of their food ( already got entrees). He called back 8:15 and said they found them and asked what I wanted to do, I asked what are you going to do and he replied "nothing". So I asked to speak to supervisor and he said I can give you his number, wanted to speak with them now, he said he couldn't do that. So I hung up and talked to the newlyweds later and they said there waiter said that I was picking up the bill but there was a problem with my credit card. I never gave my card info. As they were paying, the waiter wished my son a Happy Birthday. Really. The only reason I gave one star because they said there food was good. We had drinks after a lovely day of golf on this fabulous course. If the customer ask you (the bartender) if you make good margaritas and you use a bottled mix, don't say yes. Good margaritas are made are made with fresh squeezed lime juice. I drank half of the sweetest and most awful margarita I've ever had. Lovely golf course though. My wife and I went here for dinner on our anniversary recently. The staff were friendly and attentive. We were checked on at least every 5 minutes as we waited for our food. Our entrees did have some small issues with how they were cooked, however our server and the floor manager Lang handled this professionally, and we both ultimately thought the food was delicious (the stuffed pork chop was awesome). Fabulous views and setting. Very friendly servers. However, service was awful. The waitress would disappear for long stretches of time. I think she was also working in the bar when she wasn't in the dining room. Bus boy had to be asked for menus twice, never refilled water or ice tea. Manger walked around and greeted a few tables. He should have been helping his staff as they apparently were short handed. Food was just average, nothing special. I had a dirty glass with lipstick on it that had to be returned, also dirty cutlery. I probably won't be going back. read more
