We came here for our anniversary in the off season. We made reservations as recommended and got there right on time. The hostess told us we needed to wait at the bar until our table was ready. We got to the bar and it was freezing. We were the only ones there. The bar tender had a little space heater to try to survive. We waited for 5 minutes for our hostess, so we went and checked. We ordered the hamburger, salmon, and the chicken pot pie. The food was good, but portions were small. I would not order the pot pie again. It was more like a chicken stew with a puff pastry on top. Attended a wedding in September and loved this venue! The views are absolutely breathtaking. There were quite a few wasps, but honestly that was the only downside :). Unfortunately when we came to visiting the Nakoma resort most of their accommodations were closed for repairs in February. We had planned to eat at the upscale restaurant on property but our only option was the cafe. The service was great. Granted we were the only people there but our server had a great personality and was really nice and helpful. We chose to get a lot of apps to share and unfortunately nothing really stuck out to me. Most of the dishes were missing a little something. We also opted to try all their dessert options, which were great. There was a little something for each of us to enjoy which was nice. I don't think they make these desserts in house, but they were still really good and all of our food came out super fast regardless of there only being one guy in the kitchen. read more

I'll give them a 5 because I know what it was like before Covid and truly hope it returns to it afterward. We found Nakoma after reading about it in Tahoe Magazine. If you are a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright this is definitely one of his designs you should take the time to see. That being said, Covid has been a difficult and I'm sure costly, time for the resort. With ever changing rules by California Health districts and the Governors mandates they have had to be extremely flexible with what they can offer. Summer is always the best time for tourists, they had many of their services open, but limited. The current environment has also made it difficult to keep their best employees as many people know has become the new normal. The Wigwam is beautiful inside and out, soaring ceilings, stained glass, and a monolithic fireplace are what you'll see in the dining room at the Clubhouse. The Slow bar serves excellent cocktails to accompany your delicious meal or to just enjoy on the deck overlooking the Golf Course. The Lodge has beautiful rooms and is just a short walk down the hill from Altitude, where you will find the pool, climbing wall and so much more. The Middle Fork Bistro currently has a ToGo menu that has delicious offerings. We have spent days staying there during the summer, exploring the surrounding towns, hiking in the back country to the many alpine lakes and using the pool. Last Winter found us back again, but snow shoeing and sledding on the course after a healthy snow. The peace and serenity reminds me of the Sierras I knew as a kid years ago. This definitely isn't Tahoe! No crowds, less costly, and just an hour away from Reno. I can't wait until the pandemic is behind us and they once again shine like before. Come and spend some time, but let's keep it our little secret. ;) read more

Very very pleasant. The ambiance was incredible. The service was tip top and the food was great. They had a larger variety of vegan options than you would think- I was pleasantly surprised. We came here for dinner and it was romantic and delicious and fairly priced. We came for brunch with the views in the afternoon and had friendly service and yummy mimosas. So this place has the right idea! Execution is a little bit off but should be an easy fix. There is so much to do but so little info given unless you stumble upon it or ask different people a multitude of questions. We arrived Sunday for my surprise Birthday getaway. I had never been here before. We golfed the Dragon course on a stay and play retreat. This course is pretty hard and the greens are the struggle bus, but they seem to be working on correcting it. Staff is limited and friendly but we were offered almost zero details about the resort offerings upon arrival. They really need to let people know what they have cause it's a great place with lots to do. We checked into our room at the lodge after playing a round. The rooms are beautiful and modern but again no materials in the room about what the amenities are and there was ALOT that we found out about over the course of our stay. The lodge was clean and bare. The rooms have kuerig machines but only decaf coffee (Asked the front desk for regular coffee pods but they said they were out???). There is the beautiful clubhouse nearby called "Altitude" which offers pool, movie theater, Rick climbing wall, board games, full bar, small bites, fitness center and fat boy bikes to use free of charge. There are game rooms but are closed during the pandemic. The spa is also limited at this time and you need to book the fitness room and movie theater and you get free buckets of balls to use at the range, if you're playing the course. We had dinner Sunday night in the main lodge (I think it was called the summit) at the Wigwam. Seating is on the patio overlooking the first hole. Gorgeous setting for dinner, it's casual dress. The food was good not great and service was decent. The cost reflect typical resort pricing- $7 for a crusty, warm sourdough round with a lemon parsley butter, $12 for a Caesar and $40 a ribeye. Bread and butter was fantastic but $7 for bread with dinner?! The Caesar was crisp, cold and dressing tasted house made. The ribeye lacked seasoning but was well cooked. It came with came delicious broccoli rabe and an underwhelming Parmesan risotto cake. Cocktails were $12 on average. It was a peaceful and relaxing dinner; the view was what really stole the show. The most helpful and knowledgeable person was a young man who was working at Altitude on Monday Morning, 7/20/20. He gave us a full run down of the resort amenities and how to proceed booking. He also gave personal recommendations for which of the surrounding lakes offered what we were looking for and he had caffeinated COFFEE!!!! Nothing fancy just a well brewed coffee which is apparently very hard to come by at this resort. Please keep in mind we are in seclusion and there is not a Starbucks around the corner. I wish I got his name because he was the star staff member on this trip and definitely offered concierge service needed for this luxury resort. Give that young man a raise! In any case, we played another round of golf that day (we found out after the fact it was unlimited golf with our stay and play). On the next morning we headed back up to Altitude for coffee but the helpful young man was not there. It was what seemed to be a female manager training a young lady and we were told they were out of coffee and maybe the summit would have some (it is a long walk up hill to get there and not convenient for guests). She did offer a latte but that's not my cup of coffee. In any case we skipped that and decided to check out the fat boy mountain bikes. We took them for a ride through one of the neighborhoods but we are in the mountains... ALL hills, lol. We did not ride for too long but nice of them to offer this to guests. So bottom line, I would definitely come back but I think for this type of resort, they could step it up a bit. It is worth it but ask a lot of questions or you will miss out on all they have to offer. Oh and maybe bring your own coffee, lol. I also think with all the things they have available I would bring my kids (when Nakoma becomes fully operational). I think there is a lot for the whole family to enjoy. So If you enjoy the outdoors this just might be the place for you and your family. Getting some R&R, enjoying a plethora of outdoor activities coupled with the some of the most majestic mountain views made this trip memorable. It light of the current state of the world, this was much needed and worth it. Keep working on it Nakoma you did ok for us and we will be back for another go! read more

When finally able to leave town for a few days we couldn't have picked a better location. Safety measures were in place everywhere, who needs the room cleaned every day? And all we needed to do was ask the front desk when we needed more coffee for the Kurig or towels. The pool was open which made my husband very happy. Best of all was the food at the Wigwam restaurant! Beautiful views overlooking the golf course and my elk dinner with risotto and mushrooms was one of the best dinners I've ever eaten. This place has had its ups and downs over the years -- currently, it's a great place to come eat. Incredible food, some of the best you'll find in the area. The dining room is a little weird -- not a fan of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed teepee, but if you can get an outdoor table during the summer, it's a fantastic atmosphere. How do I say that I had the most amazing sides I've ever had! The purple potatoes and succotash were delicious. I could have made my whole meal just from the sides. The chicken was so-so, a little bit dry as it was white meat. My dinner companion had the Bass which he said was decent. We just celebrated my Daughter's wedding here at this very special venue. The staff, service and food went above and beyond our expectations. We were welcomed warmly by the staff from the moment we arrived and they made us feel so welcomed through our entire stay. The venue is in an exquisite setting set. aside from the rest of the world and great for a destination wedding as the facility is intimate and private. Every person on the staff was attentive and the wedding coordinators Rachael and Courtney were highly skilled and professional. Richard the manager is very helpful as is the entire hotel staff. The wedding package vendor's Quincy Cottage, DJ Nicolas, and Chef Tahoe Photographer we're all amazing and we couldn't recommend them highly enough. My wife and I came up to Nakoma for a quick anniversary overnight trip. We really enjoyed our dinner at Fifty44! The setting was very nice - beautiful view of the mountains at sunset and a huge fireplace in the middle of the restaurant. It was elegant, but comfortable. Our service was perfect all evening - excellent timing on everything from orders to courses to drink refills to the check. Our servers were very pleasant and professional. We couldn't decide between the baked artichoke hearts or the pear appetizer, so we splurged on both and were so glad we did - both were amazing! The fresh cheese with the pear and the prosciutto and the dressed greens were a combination neither of us had had and can't wait to have again someday! The artichoke hearts were also delicious with great flavor, crispy breadcrumbs and a delicious tangy sauce to top it off! We knew we'd barely have room for our main courses after 2 delicious appetizers! I chose the ribeye and it was amazing - perfectly cooked to medium with excellent flavor. The fried risotto cake was just ok. My wife ordered the papardelle and added prawns. I loved the fresh pasta and the prawns were perfectly cooked and so tender - heaven! The sauce wasn't my favorite, but the corn and spinach in it were very good. Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert - we'll have to sample those next visit! Signage at night is minimal for the lodge and restaurant. If we hadn't been there before, it's easy to get lost up there. Food was just ok. The porterhouse steaks are small, well seasoned, but seemingly deceptively cut, and splayed out to give the appearance they are larger. I doubt they were the size listed on the menu. The cook on the steak wasn't what I ordered either, too rare. The drinks, were just ok. Lemon drop was way too lemony and minimal alcohol. The service was just ok. We were there for a total of two hours, and there were only 5-6 tables of diners there at any time. It was the weekend also, so a little concerning to me about how little business there was. The outside lighting from parking to the restaurant is down right DANGEROUS. There is ONE auto turn on light on a tree. If you don't have a flashlight, you'll go down. My wife is handicap and she was very concerned walking at night front yhe restaurant to the handicap parking. The server was very nice but seemed overwhelmed and unsure. Given the lack of business, that seems concerning. Overall, the $400+ price for 4 people wasn't enticing enough, giving the concerns about the experience, to return. The building architecture and ambiance was very nice, but the overall experience was sub-par. read more

A perfect evening at Nakoma! A new menu, a new chef and NEW energy at Nakoma! We dined on the beautiful deck ,over looking the spectacular first hole....live music ,white lights over head and a view of the Sierra that leaves a lasting memory. The menu is farm fresh with an array of unique salads and entrees. I ordered the venison with a blackberry sauce ..it was cooked to perfection and the presentation was outstanding. A little disappointed..... My husband, friends and I had dinner Aug. 27th 2018 because of a review I saw on Facebook, by another patron. We were so looking forward to a great dinner. First thing...they were out of soup...no soup !! Then on the menu was the filet with asparagus ....no asparagus...instead we had broccolini...ugh! One in our party had the Paella and said it was great. One out of 4 isn't too bad. Wish they would have had their fireplace fired up for the ambiance, it was just too cold in there for such a lovely place. read more

The lodge is great, the pool relaxing, and their restaurant, The Wigwam is excellent. Food is amazing. Make the trek it is soooo worth it. Only 45 mins from Tahoe. All the beauty of Tahoe w/o the crowds. The staff is so friendly and service is spectacular. You will be delighted. read more

Not sure where to begin but here goes: The restaurant which was advertised as high end food fell was short of expectations. The food and cocktails took an eternity to be delivered (20 mins for the drinks and 11/2hrs for the overdone cold steaks, elk special or so it was advertised and cold venison). With drinks and terrible food came to plus $100 per person. The waitress was constantly apologizing, and to other tables, knowing the experience was very poor. The rooms are very nice but zero service when we returned from there lousy golf course. No service at all to the two other rooms that were booked. No new towels, no coffee, not toiletries, no nothing. Extremely poor service for such expensive accommodations. I wrote to the GM and front of he house manager to explain why everything was below customer expectations but zero replies, hence this very poor review. read more

Chef Brooke offers a wonderful menu - really enjoyed both the Short Rib Ragu, and the Elk entrees. I also sampled the house special chicken dinner as well. All were fantastic. Well...first time here. We were in town visiting family, but wanted to play the dragon first. Beautiful area...I grew up here but am awestruck how beautiful it really is when I come back to visit. The golf course itself is very nice. The grass has been well cared for. The holes were a little difficult so don't get too over confident! Several times, we were surprised by the layout and placement of bunkers. They have a well stocked shop that can easily compete with some other nice courses around the area. The one thing that stood out to me were the bathrooms on the course! On other places we've played, of course, the bathrooms in the clubhouse are maintained and nice but sometimes the stand alone bathrooms are nothing to brag about. These were...nice! Well ventilated kept cool, and speaking for other women, stocked with "girl supplies" if life decides to surprise you as it tends to do every now and then:) My only complaint, and please don't see me as the bad guy...was not until the very end of our visit. It was near the end of our visit but we had another engagement to be at later. It was about 4:15 and wanted to stop at the little restaurant for a quick bite, maybe a salad or sandwich. When we walked inside, for the staffs defense, I look young. I'm well over 21 (I'm 34), but I do look quite a bit younger. However, the minute we walked in, the bartender told the server "we can't serve her". They did not ask how old I was, smile, hello...they did tell us though that lunch is over and dinner doesn't start until 5. The bar was serving a few items, but not anything quick. My boyfriend, already irked, told them, thank you but no thank you. The lady serving said she could go to ask the chef if he could "whip up something" for us. Umm..I already felt unwelcome when we walked in. We politely declined. That was not a deal breaker. The place was beautiful. This is the second year coming here and both times the food was amazing! This year we ordered game hen, prime rib, and beet salad. All of them were delicious. My brother ordered the shrimp appetizer and used the complimentary bread in the sauce for an additional delight. For dessert we ordered sorbet, cheesecake, creme brulee, and decadent chocolate cake. My stay at the Nakoma Resort was average until I had dinner. The staff was prompt friendly and professional. I had the ribeye steak, a standard for most good restaurants, and it was exceptional, prepared just as I asked, but what made it perfect was the sauce.
