4th of July; Happy Independence Day! Absolutely gorgeous day for a motorcycle ride, so I got up early and headed for the Golden Chain Highway. Needing a break, I stopped in the Red Moose around 9:30 in the morning for some breakfast. There were customers, but I was able to be seated immediately and service was prompt. I had my choice of interior dining room or outdoor on the deck; given the scenery I chose the deck. Ordered the Mega Moose with black coffee. See pic! Before hitting the road I stopped in the bathroom and noticed that the attractive waitress had left a sign on the wall specifically seeking me out! There's nothing that I love more than to dine in a unique, mom and pop restaurant in a small mountain town, that caters to the taste of locals, tourists and hikers, who trek the Pacific Crest Trail. I'm talking about Red Moose Cafe, located in beautiful Sierra City, CA. As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the large counter and the many stools that cater to locals all over Sierra County. Hikers trekking the Pacific Crest Trail make the 2-mile diversion into Sierra City to enjoy the fine mountain cuisine, after weeks of enduring... shall we say ... trail food? The owner of the restaurant, Steve, told me that during the summer months, the restaurant hosts several hikers each day. Hikers, truckers and 5th wheelers know their food, and the great places to dine. "From the Coop" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "Mega Moose," as I was in the mood for a large, mountain breakfast. The menu describes this amazing breakfast as, "Two eggs, two premium bacon, and two sausage links served with potatoes or cottage cheese and your choice of toast or English muffin." Surprise! ... country style or hash brown potatoes were offered, so I went with hash browns. As my de facto standard choice, I opted for sourdough toast. This amazing breakfast showcases two pieces of thick bacon, and two juicy links of sausage, grilled perfectly and placed on the platter with care and lots of love. The slab of hash brown potatoes were perfectly grilled to crispy medium golden brown on the outside, white, tender and juicy on the inside. Perfect hash browns! As per my order, the two eggs arrived sunnyside up, perfectly cooked, and made for great dipping with the hash browns. My slice of sourdough toast was toasted ... no surprise, buttered, and made for the prefect thing to scoop up every bit of goodness from the plate. No wonder Red Moose Cafe is a favorite of locals, and hikers who divert from the Pacific Crest Trail to relax, and enjoy a superior breakfast! My breakfast was simply amazing, and it was so delicious that I didn't bother adding any condiments for taste enhancement - including salt or pepper - as my breakfast was simply THAT GOOD! Steve, Tammy and the friendly staff treated me like a rock star, which added to the amazing breakfast that I enjoyed at this fine restaurant. Such a delicious breakfast, served in a rustic cafe, but super friendly staff! When you're exploring beautiful Sierra County, at the northern end of the gold country, or you're taking a break from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, you owe it to yourself to enjoy fine mountain cuisine at Red Moose Cafe. I felt like I was living in an episode of the Virgin River TV series. We walked in for breakfast and everyone was so friendly. Other than myself, everyone knew each other. They all had their personal coffee mugs hanging on nails on a post. Be Breakfast was good! But more importantly, the experience was completely charming. My 6-year-old son was seriously injured while we were staying at a nearby campground, and had to be taken by helicopter from Sierra City to a hospital in Reno. The Red Moose Cafe co-owner (Jenny) could not have been nicer to us -- she gave free lunch to my other kids (and adamantly refused to accept any payment for it), helped me communicate with the first responders, and gave me driving directions to the hospital in Reno so I could meet my wife and son there. She was just a wonderful person to have around during a scary and stressful time. And my other son loved his Moose Burger and fries! Will definitely be returning here during my next trip to Sierra City. read more

One of the only places we found that was open on Easter Sunday. Very friendly, sweet owners that chat with everyone. We stopped by on our way to a hiking trail to find anywhere we could buy a bottle of water from, but just about everything 30 minutes in both directions was closed so the owners gave us one of their own metal hiking water bottles. Really kind of them to do. We ended up stopping by to have a bite to eat and a couple drinks on the way back, and to return their bottle. They have 2 beers on draft - 805 and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, wine, mimosas, and a variety of other drink options. We ordered the 2 piece fish and chips as a snack and without having to ask they separated our order into 2 plates - each with a large piece of fish and good portion of fries + home made tartar sauce. I never eat tartar sauce but it tasted so fresh I had to try it, and it was really good. Ordered 2 mimosas, well made, and 2 beers. Overall a wonderful place to stop by pre- or post-hike or if you're just passing through. read more

This is such a quaint little spot in Sierra city. A quick stop on the way to downieville or further. They offer indoor and outdoor seating and fun little card games on the tables! The staff was extremely accommodating and let us order from the lunch menu 30 minutes early. Our food came out fairly quickly and everything was presented so nicely. All the food was seasoned and cooked perfectly! I ended up ordering a salad and was able to make some additions to it to really customize it. Really great service and awesome food make this a great spot to pick up a quick lunch or breakfast and enjoy all their restaurant antiques and the cute little town of Sierra city. I sat at the counter for 10 minutes before I figured out that I had to order and pay for it up front. When they brought me my breakfast burrito it was huge and I had to cut it in half. The wrapping tortilla was very tough and the insides were absolutely tasteless,. I got some kechup and it was still too dry and tasteless. read more

We never got the proprietor's name, but he and the person who cooked our breakfast burritos were so sweet, helpful, and thoughtful. We arrived in Sierra City before the 'season' started and during COVID, so they were the only place open in town. We asked about the market, as we were hoping to get some supplies for a hike, and the man at Red Moose informed us that the market has been opening at random hours these days, and then he went in search of water bottles, of which he just gave us 4 at no charge! The were very thoughtful about packing the burritos, knowing we were going on a hike - even though we never asked! They were really good, and pretty darn good! The very berry chocolate chip scone was also a VERY delicious treat to have after our burritos at the highest point of our hike in the Buttes. Looking forward to visiting again later in the season and when more places are open in town. read more

Was spending a couple of days in the area, and stopped here for a hearty breakfast so got the mega moose plate with a cup of hot cider. Sat outside on the porch where the tables were spaced out for social distancing and each table had a squirt bottle of hand sanitizer. I had the French toast griddle combo. I love French toast, but not everyone knows how to make it the way I like. However the Red Moose killed it! The French toast was perfect. My only complaint was I wish it came with more! It was crispy and had good flavor. Highly recommend this place. Coffee was also good. read more

Her Modus operandi is to tell vicious lies about good people. Namely the Mtn Messenger & staff, Public Works staff, a local bar & bike shop owner, and a "close friend" who lost her husband recently. Various members of local law enforcement are either lauded or disparaged. Only the finest are targeted. The Sierra Prospect website folks are very patient with her antics yet do a search on her name anyhow via their search box. Our first meal there was breakfast on the 1st, and we liked it so much that we decided to go back several other times. Girlfriend got a mimosa and a moose burger. Mimosa tasted like the champagne bottle had been open for weeks, orange juice tasted sour and old. The meat tasted like it was from prehistoric times, just recently taken from the Siberian permafrost and defrosted in the microwave. Was this Whooly Mammoth meat? Then she applied the ketchup from the packets provided. The consistency and texture of them looked like jam. Do they get their sauces from the same commisary as the county jail? Congratulations, worst burger of an entire life time. They take the cake. Also the fries sucked. They tasted like food in your dream. You know when you're all excited for dream food then you munch down and it has no taste because you are actually chewing on your pillow. Best part was when they tried to charge me 15 dollars for a map of the trails of the area when I could print the same exact map online for free. Screw you for trying to rip people off. read more

We showed up on a Sunday about 12:45 as a party of 10. There wasn't room on the deck so they put on adjacent tables, 6 top and 4 top. It was ok, but tight. We got as far a menus and they came back with "Hey, we made room on the deck, we're moving you outside." Fabulous. Food was good, beer was good (3 or 4 on tap), weather was perfect. We happened upon this restaurant in Sierra city California. We were with our grandchildren and we ate out on the patio. My husband and I enjoyed the smaller version or lighter version of the fish and chips it was delicious tender flaky and very tasty and the fries were fresh and awesome to. Our granddaughters enjoy their grill cheese sandwich it was perfect size for both of them and not too pricey either. The wait staff was excellent food was brought in a timely manner we were checked on several times and even the owner looks like he came out and checked on us There was a sign out on the patio that said they did not want you to split a meal which I was a bit disappointed in that but they did offer lighter versions of three things and one was what we want so that worked perfectly for us. If we are in this quaint little city again we will surely stop by for another wonderful meal it's definitely worth a try again. read more

Very basic breakfast menu, but good food prepared with a lot of care. It is strictly a husband and wife operation, so I can imagine that they get pretty backed up when things get busy. They are wonderful people though, and care greatly about your experience. The space itself has a ton of character, and the prices are very reasonable. The food isn't five star, but combined with the experience it gets top marks. If you want a more elaborate menu, Mountain Creek Restaurant directly across the street offers a lot more selection. read more
