I'm really not sure if there are words to describe how much I enjoyed this place. We actually ate dinner here twice during our 3 days in Vienna we both liked it so much. We called from the hotel the first night we were there (it was a weeknight in January). I called around 5 pm and asked if we could make a reservation for that night. He had one left, at 6:30 and we took it. For the 2nd time we ate there, I called the day before for a reservation. You do need a reservation. The first night we were right by the door and we watched them turn away people constantly and send them to the 2nd location down the street because they are able to accommodate walk-ins with a wait. I had the schnitzel both nights. My husband had the goulash the first night. Both meals were amazing. The schnitzels are enormous and they were SO good. The surprising highlight was their grape juice. The menu says it's made at their own vineyards. I've never had grape juice this good before, ever. On the 2nd night I actually drank 2 glasses of it. Our waiter the first night was awesome. I loved watching him interact with all of his tables. He started every conversation by saying "So!" We both really enjoyed him. He was there the 2nd night but not our waiter, but we still got to hear him chatting with people and loved it. I look forward to coming back to Vienna again someday (maybe not in January - too cold!) and eating here again. Being in full-on tourist mode, I had just left the Jesuit Church and was wandering back towards St. Stephen's when I realized it was already lunchtime. I followed the crowds and saw Figlmüller with a packed entryway even at half past noon, and a quick check of Yelp told me that this would be a worthwhile wait. The staff at Figmüller are nothing if not efficient. Despite the large crowd, tables were being cleared and new guests seated with alacrity, all while the maitre kept shouting at guests to please keep the doors closed. As I was solo, I hung back as I watched a table by the front windows paying, and when the maitre turned to me to seat me, I suggested taking the front table so I didn't take up a larger space. He was happy to oblige, and sent someone to clean up as soon as the prior customer departed. I sat down, and was quickly brought a bread basket and asked for a moment to study the menu. Honestly, I shouldn't have bothered, as the schnitzels I saw coming out to other tables looked to be absolutely the raison d'etre of this restaurant. Ordering a veal schnitzel, with sides of a cucumber salad and lingonberry jam, my eyes were still roving over the menu for a starter. The kindly waiter advised that I shouldn't push it, as the schnitzel should be enough to sate almost anyone's hunger. He was quite right, as the meat overtopped the plate even folded over, and looked like it could easily be a portion for two. The schnitzel was fantastic, and paired very well with the lingonberry sauce, while the cucumber salad was a fresh and bright side that at least gave the impression that I was eating somewhat healthily. After finishing the meal, I considered an espresso but mentioned to the waiter that I wanted to clear up my seat as the line was by now stretching out the door, but he insisted that I should stay and enjoy the entirety of my meal in comfort, which was greatly appreciated. The food here speaks for itself, as it has for over 100 years. The staff though, are what make the experience remarkable and memorable. While I am a native German speaker, I knew I was easily marked as a tourist by the staff, yet welcomed warmly and treated as an honoured guest rather than just another mark. I was really excited about coming to Figlmuller, mostly for the enormous wiener schnitzel. We made a reservation a few weeks in advance online, and they were able to seat us right away. The inside is very comfortable and casual, sort of like a local pub. There were a lot of tourists, but the crowds weren't by any means manageable. We got 2 of the famous schnitzels, as we sort of underestimated how large they would be. Seriously, they're as big as your face, and expertly fried, without being overly greasy. In fact, it even got a little bit dry in the end, but the lemon helped with the moisture and the acidity to cut through the richness. The potato salad also helped a lot, and I was a fan of the smooth, sweet taste. We also got some salads (you know, to offset the fried meat), and the fried cheese (you know, to offset the salads). The salads were very enjoyable with a sweet, tangy, yet rich dressing, and the fried cheese was very unique, as the cheese was a little sour and sharper, than the usual American mozzarella that we were used to. The service was great, and were really friendly throughout the meal. They all spoke English and were really helpful with their recommendations. I was especially impressed with the way they handled some rowdy tourists, being firm without being impolite. The prices were perhaps higher than most schnitzel places, but here you know you're getting the good stuff, and for what we paid, it was probably the meal with the best value during our entire stay in Vienna. This is a must-visit when in Vienna, especially if you're jonesin' for some schnitzel. It's a cool spot- very old building down a cute little alleyway, but don't think it would be worth a long wait unless you just really want a humongous serving of schnitzel that hangs off your plate. 2 stars off for no beer! Visiting from California for the 2nd time. My friend who is Austrian and lives in Vienna told us about this place - he said it's a staple. Last year he made the reservation for us and this year I made sure to book 3 months in advance!! The line to wait without one during December can be 2 hours long!!! Be smart- book in advance, it's free! Get the original pork schnitzel (it's not greasy like others and you only need to sprinkle lemon on it for seasoning) and have potato salad on the side. Don't get a beer as it will fill you up. Definitely stick to a white wine spritzer if you want alcohol. I wasn't even going to try my luck coming here following yesterday's tip that people were getting turned away at 12.20pm yesterday and by golly, I happened to stroll past at 12.30 on my way to Mozarthaus and feeling optimistic, I asked for a table for two outdoors and lo and behold my request was granted! We were immediately seated and given menus. No question, we had to get the Weiner schnitzel. If you've seen the pictures, they're massive. Bigger than a dinner plate which I don't think the human body should really consume in one setting. So at the time of ordering we had beef broth with semolina dumplings to start, then got the schnitzel to share. The soup to start was very flavourful, not overly filling and really just a nice way to start the meal. I wasn't expecting this, but the chefs had cut out schnitzel in half before cooking and we were given them separately alongside two plates of potato salad and mixed salad (and ligonberry jam). I did ask for sides of roast potatoes and cucumber salad which I didn't get; not sure if this was an error in communication and this translated to extra potatoes and garden salad or whether I paid for sides I didn't get. Now the schnitzel was delicious but one end was raw so I had to cut around it. The potato salad was yummy but it's certainly not the best I've ever had. Last week the parents of a friend of mine from Philadelphia were in Vienna for a day on one of those cruise ships that ply the Danube and dock in the Leopoldstadt. After I gave them a general tour of the Inner City in Vienna, they wanted to eat a Wiener Schnitzel at Figlmüllers because they had read about it in a guide book. I thought okay ... you're paying ... I'll eat almost anywhere - even McDonalds - if you're paying. Now here's where it gets interesting. I got us into the original Figlmüllers on the Wollzeile and to my surprise, it was decidedly really good. Seriously .... the Wiener Schnitzel is outstanding. And the potato salad is like the best I ever had - especially as it is drizzled in Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil. Okay I thought .....this is a tourist place so the service will be s*it. Well to be honest no ..... I had the most personable, smiling waiter I can remember in Vienna. The waiter at Figlmullers was so totally cool. Maybe in the 21st century, Figlmüllers is a place where tourists flock and natives of Vienna rarely visit. But I went back to the Yelp archives and read about Figlmullers when it first opened in 1905. Kaiser Franz Josef thought it was the best Wiener Schnitzel he ever ate. Sigmund Freud thought it was the schnitzel of his dreams. Hey in 1905 everyone on Yelp loved it and thought it was a hidden gem. I had only one day in Vienna and it was suggested we go to Figlmuller since they had the Best Schnitzel in Vienna (possibly the World). My wife, "the W" had made a reservation the previous week which was recommended. We arrived for our 12-noon reservation and both the W and I ordered the Speciality of the House, the Figlmuller Schnitzel deep fried - the original for more than 100 years. As suggested, we had the Potato-field salad with Stria pumpkin-seed oil. I ordered an Oattakringer Radler Zitroni (Lemonade and Beer) and the W had an Ice Tea drink (they don't do Coke or Pepsi). This was clearly the best Schnitzel I have ever had, most certainly one of my Top Ten Dishes ever. The Schnitzel was tender and perfectly breaded. Originally we had planned to share one Schnitzel, but after seeing that these two old ladies had each ordered there own, I told the W we were not sharing. Both of us did order Potato Salad, but we could have shared one. The Potato Salad was also good. When I was about halfway through my Schnitzel, taking my time to cut small portions so I could savor each bite, I noticed that the waiter bought the two old ladies Take Out Bags. Wow, now that just made my dinning experience even better at Figlmuller. When dining in Europe, I always recollect a comment made by a friend from the UK, that taking your leftover food home from a restaurant is a "nasty tradition in America". Well after seeing the little old ladies taking home their Schnitzel, I knew I could then finish mine and the W's leftover portion could be taken home and eaten on the train ride back to Prague. We'll that's exactly what we did. We stopped at the Vienna Train Station and bought a loaf of French Bread and 8 hours later the W and I shared the Schnitzel with a Budweiser Beer on the train ride home. The Schnitzel at Figlmuller was outstanding and anyone visiting Vienna should not miss it. The original restaurant is undergoing reconstruction so they have temporarily moved around the corner. read more

A good experience, but does not live up to the hype. My friend and I originally found this place on Yelp and wanted to visit it for dinner our first night in Vienna (a Monday night). When we arrived, there was a small crowd in the original location and a waiter came out to say that they are full and no longer accepting walk-ins... reservations only. He directed us to their second location, which was around the corner but when we arrived the line was still out the door. Defeated, we said we will come here tomorrow for lunch. Fast forward to Tuesday, lunch time at around 1pm, we walked in and they also announced they were full. After waiting for nearly 15 minutes for someone (ANYONE) to notice me, I managed to aggressively flag down a waiter to make a reservation. He said dinner reservations that night was full but he was able to take reservations for Wednesday lunch time. I made a reservation for Wednesday at 2pm. He nodded and wrote down 2pm on a reserved card. He did not ask me for my name. I asked him if he needed it. He said "Ah, yes, what's your name?" I told him my name, which he hastily scribbled down. Sooooo....he was literally going to write 2pm on a card w/o my name? I didn't have much trust in this establishment for remembering faces... We arrived on Wednesday at 2pm on the dot for our lunch. Firstly, there was a line out to door (moral of the story: make a reservation for this place!!!) Someone asked how big my party was and I said party of 2. He told me we can share and join a big table but otherwise they are full. I told him I had a reservation for a party of 2. He said "Oh you have a RESERVATION, why didn't you say so?" I almost retorted back, "Because every time I asked someone about it, they ignore but whatever, just PLEASE seat me." I held my tongue. Instead, I said, "Yes, a reservation for two" and states my name. Guess what??? They couldn't find my reservation!!!!! But instead they didn't try to accommodate me and start seating everyone else with reservations behind me. They didn't say what they're going to do, or if they were looking to accommodate us!! Eventually, I flagged down the waiter who took my reservation the other day (thank God he recognized me) and they managed to seat us. However, the whole ordeal lasted 30 minutes and finally, we were seated at 2:30pm. Once seated, the service improved... fortunately. Our waiter promptly took our order. I had the beef goulash ("Very Austrian!" exclaimed my waiter) and my friend had the fried cheese with a side order of salad. I also had raspberry soda ("Oh very traditional Austrian" the waiter said again - at this point I wonder if it was genuine, or if he says that to everyone that orders). The food came out in a timely manner. The beef goulash was good and the raspberry soda was very enjoyable (I loved it!!). My friend also enjoyed her dishes. I must say, I am grateful for the experience as I'm assuming Figlmüller is very popular with tourists and locals alike. I went five minutes before they opened and about 15 people were already waiting in line! The restaurant was filled in 15 minutes. I was a solo diner and had no issues getting a table. I tried the side of boiled parsley potatoes. They were yummy too! They do charge a euro for a side of ketchup mustard Mayo . I wish they had hot sauce because that would have been awesome! I generally will never stand in a queue to eat, but we had one more night in Vienna and had vowed to eat the king of schnitzel, so we sucked it up on a late December Saturday night. I felt like the throngs of tourists I see in line for Katz's Deli in the Lower East Side of Manhattan... I never go to Katz's when there is a line but I have never scoffed at tourists for enduring the wait at Katz's because the food really is that good. I figured the same must be true for Figlmüller . There are two Figlmüller locations, right around the corner from one another. The one in the alley is smaller and serves only wine and alcohol-free drinks. The larger sister-restaurant around the corner has more space and also serves beer. Many people in line seemed to opt for going around the corner to the larger restaurant, hoping that turnover of tables would be quicker. I have no idea whether they were correct. We went to this location-- the smaller one in the alley. We stood in line for approximately an hour and a half starting at 6pm on a Saturday night. Approximately 25 people were in front of us. At least one group in front of us gave up and left. The waiters of the restaurant were very considerate and would come out every 20 minutes or so and politely tell the crowd that a certain point in line meant at least an hour wait. Apparently getting a reservation requires two weeks' advance notice. If you have no reservation, like us, you likely will be directed to a large table/booth in the back to share a space with the other folks around you in line. We were happy to do this and got the pleasure of dining with and getting to know other couples from Taiwan and Luxembourg. It was warm, festive and cosy inside. The waiter promptly took our order and our food arrived quickly. The wiener schnitzel, the house specialty, is 13.95 Euro and huge. It is pork, not veal. We had seen pictures ahead of time and had determined that one plate of it would be sufficient for us to split. The waiter brought us an extra plate and lemon for that purpose. I had thought that perhaps one of the reasons that the pictures of the schnitzel looked so big was because the plates were small. Not true! It was plenty for us. The schnitzel was golden and crispy and came solely with a lemon wedge atop it. It was moist inside and delicious. The potato salad, for an extra 4 Euro, was a tasty accompaniment. It comes with some greens atop it and is drizzled with pumpkin seed oil. We tried to order the long salted bread stick but they were out, so we instead got a basket of bread, which came with a couple of the ubiquitous rolls you see all over Vienna-- they were nothing special and should be skipped. I tried a glass of the pale and sweetish Grüner Veltliner, a generous portion of which came out in a mug. It was delicious and perfectly matched the food. We were not rushed by the waiter and -- conscious of the line of people outside-- we flagged him down when we were finished eating so we could settle our tab. Our total came to 28 Euro, plus 3 Euro for tip, and we walked out into the cold night air again, bellies full and totally satisfied. I announced to the folks now at the front of the line that they were not to worry, as I could happily report the food was worth the wait! I have no idea if locals come to or thumb their noses at Figlmüller, but I put my pride aside, acted like the total tourist that I was, and totally enjoyed myself and my meal. If you are in Vienna and looking for Wiener Schnitzel (and I think every visitor is), Figlmuller is apparently the place to go. Went on a recommendation and was not disappointed. It is a non-pretentious restaurant. You sit is a bustling room where there are serving Weiner Schnitzel as fast as they can make it. Look around the room and everyone has it on their plates. The schnitzel is a pork cutlet, pounded thin and round to about a 12 inch diameter, breaded and fried. It is so big it actually hangs over the edge of the plate. They say it is 250g (8 oz.) minimum. It's served simply with a lemon wedge. They recommend a side salad which consists of some greens (I think watercress) and some potato salad. It's a good idea to get this or you'll just be eating a huge pork cutlet with some lemon juice. At risk of being ostracized, I put my salad on my schnitzel half way through. Note that it's a wine house so they don't serve beer. Figlmuller is definitely a place to go. Enjoy. read more

Yeah, it's touristy. Yeah, it's expensive for a hunk of fried meat. But you know what? it's also THE place to get schnitzel and it's freaking delicious. Don't try to get a table without a reservation on a weekend, or at least go early to the second location around the corner. For schnitzel, potato salad, and a drink you'll end up spending around 20€. I love the potato salad with the pumpkin seed oil, it's unlike anything I've had anywhere else. Service is good, the waiters are pretty attentive by Viennese standards and speak perfect English if needed. I think I actually prefer the second location around the corner, especially when you get a table in the basement. It's really cozy and nice. Also, you can get beer there unlike the place on Wollzeile. Same kitchen, too, and you're about 3x more likely to get a table without a reservation. read more

It was short notice, but we ventured out and found this little gem tucked away in a narrow alley way. We got lucky: When we arrived the place was absolutely packed and the waiter asked if we had reservations. We said we didn't, but just before the waiter could reply a couple just asked for the bill and the waiter said he could offer us their table. Immediately after us (within five minutes), the waiter had to turn away several groups: two couples, a group of four and one individual that didn't have reservations and immediately a line formed. I would absolutely recommend reservations. We were seated in the outer area where the wall was adorned with press clippings from a variety of global papers (including WSJ). From what we had read, the Schnitzel was the way to go. A cute older couple next to us tried (successfully) to indicate to us (by speaking in increasingly loud and slower broken English accompanied by hand gestures) that the Schnitzel was a large order and that we could probably share. We got that, the recommended small mix salad and the Kraftige Rindsuppe (beef broth soup with semolina dumpling). The broth came first and a great way to start the meal. The namesake Schnitzel did not disappoint. Draped over the serving plate, it was thin and excellently done. Not too greasy and very crisp to the taste, it was also a very generous portion size. The small mixed salad also ended up being surprisingly good as the dressing was a well balanced mix of sweet and creamy. I didn't see beer on the menu so I opted for a Riesling. Try to eat an entire Schnitzel here, try, I double dare you. Figlmüller serves the largest schnitzels I have ever seen---larger than my plate (see the photo if you don't believe me). Sure it's a bit touristy, but apparently this is THE place for schnitzel, and if you are in Vienna of course you must have schnitzel and some sachertorte. Service was quick and friendly, and as a perk of being in the tourist zone, the menu is available in English. As for that schnitzel---it was pounded thin and fried perfectly, the best I've ever had! When we went to this restaurant they had their second location under renovation so this one was really busy. We stopped by twice and both times there was a long line. We could not get a table so we called them and made a reservation over the phone. I had veal goulash with gnocchi, and my husband had their ginormous schnitzel with potato salad. My dish was really good. I added sour cream to goulash and this made it even better. I totally loved it. Our table was on a patio right where the line forms. It was kind of funny to sit there right under the scrutiny of hungry eyes of bystanders. Some were talking about my food and how big the schnitzel was. I did not mind that. Same thing happened to me at Demel's patio where some lady leaned over and took a picture of my food. This place is an institution in Vienna and I find myself coming here on every visit. It is especially a good place to bring friends who have never been here, as the food, ambiance and history are all incredible. First of all, either book a table or be prepared for a line and a wait. And be aware that there are 2 Figlmüller's here, both are great, but I prefer the original location as it's more historic. The Schnitzel is as awesome as advertised, and the potato salad is divine as well. The servers seem a bit brusk, but the turnover is huge and the place is busy. Although I have found that the waiters always try to be friendly even though you know they area bit overwhelmed. Beer is cold and good as well! Nothing short of perfection!! This place is absolutely delicious and has the best schnitzel and fried cheese probably on the planet. Figlmuller is famous worldwide. We live in California and when we arrived in Vienna we went straight there for dinner. Unfortunately, there was a line out the door and around the corner. The good news is there are two locations in Vienna so we were able to put our name in at the other restaurant and only had to wait 30 minutes. We then went back to our hotel we called and made a reservation for the next night so we could go again!!! If you have the opportunity to go here, don't hesitate!!!!! read more

Holy molly! Now that is a schnitzel!!! It is bigger than your face, and it is delicious! We ordered the pork schnitzel which is a flat pounded piece of meat, breaded and pan fried. It's really good, and it's one of those things that you've got to try when in Vienna! We ordered ours with a side of cold potato salad -that was amazing, the dressing was awesome!! We shared 1 order for 2 because the thing, I repeat, is bigger than your face! I love the establishment, it smells like a cave when you go down the stairs, the waiters are stoic, probably used to all the tourists stopping by to try their famous dishes. I stopped by here few evenings ago with my wife. Even though we were not really hungry it was our last night in Vienna and we had been wanting to try Figlmullers. We originally went to a different location only to be told that it was booked solid. So we walked the 50 or so meters to this location and walked right in. It was just before 6 pm and our total wait time was less than 5 minutes. The inside of this Figlmullers was done in lots of wood tones and they had a couple of chalkboards with menus hanging around as well as stacks of their wine up high. We ended up getting sat at a four top in the main area with the bar and so I wasn't able to see much of the restaurant. For dinner both my wife and I decided on have the original schnitzel. We waited about 15 minutes or so before ours came out and as I had seen in many, our schnitzels were bigger than our plates and garnished with a single lemon wedge. They were actually large enough that my wife gave up after eating only half of hers and I had to help her in finish it. I ended up enjoying the flavor of the schnitzel as the pork inside was pretty tender while the outside breading had a good flavor and crunch to it. My only wish for it was that I would had gotten more than a single lemon wedge as I really enjoyed the acidity it added to the dish. The bottom line for me is that I would come here again in the future. It isn't often that you get to eat at the home of some type of food and so this experience was nice from that perspective. That combined with the nice flavor of the dish makes it a must visit when in Vienna. read more

MAKE RESERVATIONS!!! We were told to come to this place for the BEST SCHNITZEL IN AUSTRIA, but we probably should make reservations first. Did we listen? Nah. We wandered our way over the the tiny alley that holds this 100 year-old famous restaurant, and stood outside in line with other stupid tourists watching people who have made reservations walk in, sip their wine slowly, and not getting out of the restaurant. And when they finally do, another group with reservation walk in in front of us non-chalantly. The good news is that as you wait for over an hour outside of the door, they've got heaters above for you. And right in front of your face is another small cafe that allows you to drink wine and eat snacks outside while you wait, not that we did. Oh apparently there's another location a block from this one, that's not the original and not 100 years old, so i guess we did the right thing... Needless to say, I took plenty of photos of the outside of the restaurant while I was waiting. No details escaped me,but i'm nice and will only post the few that are more useful... Anyway, we waited for a bit over an hour before we were finally seated. Had some wine, ordered a giant schnitzel, and a goulash with gnocchi. The schnitzel...well as my bf would put it, is a "F$#%ing schnitzel," how good could it possibly get? Well it was actually pretty good. Very flavourful and tasty. The goulash was mediocre - nothing special about it. The potato salad that they recommend you order with the schnitzel was very very tasty. So all in all, the schnitzel is worth coming for, but if you don't make a reservation, then it's not worth the line. I was told this is a tourist spot, but I am a tourist so I guess it's okay. I ordered the schnitzel and potato salad. Schnitzel was decent but the potato salad with the pumpkin oil was quite good. They charged about 15 euros for the schnitzel which my friend said was overpriced, but I don't think I minded all too much since I was pretty much starving and it fixed the problem. Amazing schnitzel! One of the best I've ever eaten anywhere in the world. It looks like there's a long wait but they sat us very quickly and served us just as quickly too! Well, I have to say everything you hear about this place is true: THE best Schnitzel in Vienna and not so friendly waiting staff. I am not a huge fan of Schnitzel to be honest, but since I was eating at the place which is known for its Schnitzel I went for it. And I am so glad I did. Light and not at all greasy, so big that it is bigger than a plate and accompanied by a really good potato salad, it was awesome. I slipped straight into a food coma and waved goodbye to the Apfelstrudel I was hoping to enjoy afterwards. Waiting staff: typically Viennese I am afraid - not so good with customer service, seeming a little impatient and rude. Always try to speak German with them if you can. Charming Viennese restaurant in a little back alley. A bit touristy, but good. I ordered the goulash with spaetzle which was tender and well seasoned. Accompanied by a dry Riesling - perfect! My girls both ordered the schnitzel; one would have been enough to feed both. We ate leftovers for two days! My husband had the fried cheese. Again - huge portion. We also shared a mixed salad. Not a green salad as we were expecting but a mix of cress, potatoes, cole slaws and other stuff. Tasty but not THE salad I wanted. read more

One of the best schnitzel I've had. The potato salad was also amazing as it was topped off beautifully with some delicious sweet salad greens and the potato salad itself seemed light. I got the schnitzel and it was definitely worth the wait! I got the potato salad with it and it was the best potato salad I have ever had (don't tell mom!). It had some balsamic vinegar in it and when mixed with the schnitzel it was perfect. read more

Make a reservation, as they will not seat you! Knowing this place being the original Figlmuller and how popular it is, I made sure to make a reservation ahead of time for lunch. I was a little disappointed that the reservation only got us to the patio seating (was hoping to be inside), but had a good time nonetheless. The waiters are dressed sharply and make sure we are accommodated! It was nice to see our name on the reservation card - felt important! We ordered two original schnitzels, my husband had the roasted potato side, and I had the potato salad with pumpkin oil (BEST I EVER HAD!!). The schnitzels are really big, they are bigger than the plate. However, very thin, so some people could probably finish it (like my husband). I could only finish half. The coating was out of the world - it was VERY DELICIOUS. I paired my meal with a grape spritzer (made from their own grapes!). Tasted very nice, in fact quite different taste from grape juice I've had in the states. Definitely recommended! Come with hungry stomach! read more
