Touted as the best schnitzel in Austria, expectations were high. Note - this location is the "sister" restaurant of the "main" location just down the road that was closed for renovations (I believe). The food was great and did not disappoint. The pork was thin but very tender. Portions are huge and 2 people could easily split an order. The potato salad was tasty without feeling heavy. Well done!
Phenomenal! two weeks later and I'm still waking up in the middle of the night thinking about what "real" schnitzel tastes like. Make a reservation for a more enjoyable experience but definitely put this joint on your list for an authentic meal in Vienna. Overall service - with a little bit of local attitude - and enjoyable decor helped round out a stellar experience. Highly recommended.
We had to try it despite not having reservations. My veggie friend was curious about the vegan schnitzel, so we braved the cold for about an hour to sit. The combo is the pork schnitzel + potato salad + lingonberry jam, which makes the meal pretty expensive compared to any other schnitzel you can get in Vienna where these sides are included. I will say the schnitzel and jam are good. I won't say it's like 2x better than any other schnitzel I've had on the trip, which is about the cost inflation you're paying to eat at this 'institution.' The potato salad that everyone cites as the most delicious thing on Earth was probably the most disappointing unfortunately. If you like mustard-heavy potato salad that is slightly sweet, you're in for a treat, otherwise it's really quite gross. The vegan schnitzel looked really sad, but my friend kind of liked it. She said it was basically Morningstar veggie chicken nuggets, except it's $25. Service was exceptionally slow even from a European standard. Would not recommend unless you had a reservation and extra euros to spend.
This is a must try in Vienna! It's hard to get a table here, but worth the effort! What an experience to try all of these traditional foods and it didn't disappoint! The chicken Schnitzel was prepared perfectly! It wasn't oily at all and the chicken was so tender! It was so delightful, because "honestly, I haven't had a good piece of chicken like this in a long time! I loved where it's also located- nestled in a cute alley way'. The decor is also the traditional carved wood. I really love the traditional ambiance you really felt like you're experiencing the culture. The service was on point, extremely informative with the menu, and attentive! We loved the food and experience! A must try in Vienna!
The Figlmüller schnitzel was huge and definitely one of those Vienna bucket list meals. I had the original with potatoes and it took up the whole plate. It sorta reminds me of chicken katsu, however I did feel it was a bit dry. I don't really know what I was expecting haha. The restaurant itself is big and had a line out the door, which tells you how popular it is. We waited outside for about 20 minutes. It didn't seem that bad. The service was very slow, not great, but it was okay for what it was. Overall, worth it for the size of the schnitzel because it was bigger than the plate and to check it off the list. Would I go again? Probably not.
The potato salad and baked potato sides stood out. They were absolutely delicious paired with the schnitzel. A word of caution - the schnitzel is huge and will send you into a food coma. If you visit with a loved one, I recommend sharing a schnitzel with them. Service was...a little impolite. Not to me directly, but to other customers. I could see others were made uncomfortable by the tense, direct nature of communication by one male server in particular. It really was beyond Austrian/German "directness". For this reason, and the high price, I deduct one star. Ultimately, I recommend visiting, at least once!
This is the original schnitzel place. Although authentic Weiner schnitzel uses veal, some restaurants use pork to save money. Figlmüller uses pork. They must have still done well with pork schnitzel because they opened another location on Bäckerstraße around the corner. I thought this would be a tourist trap, but was pleasantly surprised at how authentic the food and service were. The pork schnitzel was pounded very thin and fried to a crisp. It was huge, so big that it extended the edge of the plate. The flavor was what you expected a pork schnitzel to taste like -- nothing too earth-shattering delicious -- but the side of potato salad elevated my meal. The potato salad was made with pumpkin seed oil, with a little sweetness and a little tang. It was the best potato salad I had in Vienna. The service was top notch as well. I felt welcomed and our server was warm. I did not feel like a tourist...except maybe when I asked to take a photo with my pork schnitzel!
Touted as the best schnitzel in Vienna, we had to try it. It is good. It is very large. It was a little dry though. The cranberry sauce was good with it. The potato salad with greens was different from any potato salad we've had, but it was a highlight. Service was prompt and friendly, and easily accommodated our English.
Best schnitzel, hands down! Restaurant is cute and service was perfect. Researched best schnitzel when coming to Vienna and this place does not disappoint. The portion is large and fresh and seasoned perfectly. Must get their version of potato salad with it. Stunning. A must go in my opinion.
Figlmuller was really good, and the service was among the best we had in Vienna, but why does schnitzel everywhere in this town taste kind of bland? It's not just me - everyone in our party said as much. Nevertheless, the pork schnitzel here was prepared pretty well, the potato salad with it was fantastic, and our server super friendly. It did take some time to get things, but he was concerned and on top of it. The place is nice, and bustling with tables all having the signature dish (so large as others have said). We did wait in line, but it went fast for us. Having done some of the other schnitzel places in town I think this was the best for us.
Everyone recommended Figmüller, so of course we had to try it. Every time we walked by the line outside was a mile long. Luckily we saw the side street entrance and walked right in and were sat. The schnitzel was absolutely perfect. Nice and tender, and the lingonberry jam was a delightful addition. If you are looking for some good schnitzel, this is the place.
The best Weinerschnitzel in Vienna since 1905. Our friend made reservations two weeks ago in advance and we still had to wait 10 minutes. It was well worth it. The food was great and superb service.

Came for a nice quiet dinner with the husband and friends. The schnitzel here was probably the best of our entire trip. The potatoes were tender and flavorful. My only complaint was that the second floor was a heat box. We were sweating through dinner. But will definitely be back for another round! read more

The original Figlmüller is a very popular destination because it is said to be the home of the original Wienerschnitzel. However, a true Wienerschnitzelis made of veal, in which they do not serve at this particular location. As others have said, it gets very crowded, but I went sort of early and was able to get a table. While it was cool to be in the most popular restaurant in Vienna, I feel it wasn't great. I was told by the host/waiter, that if you wanted real Wienerschnitzel with veal, you'd have to visit their Bäckerstrasse (back street) location or Lugeck, both located about a 1-2 minute walk away. If you are just here to be at the popular restaurant, then this is the place. If you are here to have a TRUE Wienerschnitzel, go to either their Bäckerstrasse location, or Lugeck (which also says Figlmüller on the sign). read more

I went here my first night in Vienna, as recommended by my fellow yelpers. Came away dissapointed. The Schnitzel was an amazing portion size but did not by any means blow me away. I also got a side salad and a potatoe salad, both of which were mediocre. The staff at the front was welcoming, but the waiter I had was not very helpful and was kind if cold towards me, which gave me a very negative feeling and experience. read more

The restaurant gives you a high end feeling with decent price menu. The main dishes which is authentic Wiener Schnitzel , beef soup and potato salad range from $16-22. Love love love the beef soup and potato salad, very rich in flavour. You should try to book a table ahead so you dont have to wait in a long time. Or walk in early for dinner by 4:30pm like us without reservations. read more
Impressive. The schnitzel was great but what I really loved, the mixed salad! I am NOT a salad person, I got the special schnitzel they had because hey it's Vienna and it didn't disappoint. My mom got the large mixed salad. It had a variety of vegetables, some of them pickled? And whatever dressing on it, it was bomb. Also, there are 2 locations for this place. One is he original, busy if you don't make a reservation. The second is around the corner and much easier to get a table at. read more
Worth making a reservation - even for the late weekday lunch I had, they were not accepting walk-ins at this location (only at the other one around the corner) but this is supposedly the original "cool" one - don't be that party getting told no at the door, make a rezzer. Their schnitzel is with pork, not veal, so different, stronger flavor, but still well executed. This was the biggest of the schnitzels I had (I think there's a plate under there, Iowa pork tenderloin style), and might have been pounded a tiny bit too thin, but was still tasty. It originally came with a sort of hash browned potatoes (in the pic), but the waiter came back apologetically with the correct mixed green and German potato salad, which honestly is a much better pairing. Worth noting they do not appear to serve beer at all here, which strikes me as odd, given where it is and what it does. Maybe the other location does and just this one doesn't? Not sure. It's very well known, but doesn't feel insanely touristy. Pricing is very reasonable (I thought - could certainly be higher if they wanted and people would probably pay for the name). I don't think you'll be disappointed if you add it to your itinerary. read more

Asians was Discriminated against here！ the waiter is very rude first，he always served white people before us even we come earlier. As we already ate some food before we come here，so we share one fried pork and order drink separately. then the waitor is so disappointed and never communicate with us. when i asked for help to say "excuse me" or "sorry"， he said" madam， it is a restaurant，u cant speak loudly" if so please told me， can u use your back to know my shaking hand ？ we understand u want money so hungry， so we remove all tips and let u know poor service get zero tips. food here is overpriced， it is a quite usual fried pork. why we come here to waste time. read more

Figlmüller Schnitzel transformed into a Hapsburg. The schnitzel was a bit a chewy. Wish there was some sauce or some greens to put some hair on his handsome face. Half portion is bigger than you think. Thank you @Alan V. for the artistic inspiration. read more

We ventured into the original Figlmuller wine house on Wollzeile for dinner and somehow lucked out as we were quickly seated at a table that others just vacated. We were right next to the door, however, so we got to hear the waiters tell the throngs of eager punters that the venue was full but there is luckily a bigger version around the corner. We estimated the waiters turned dozens of people without reservations away during the course of our meal. This was on a Monday, so if you'd like to dine in the original location, making a reservation is recommended. Almost everyone around us had the signature pork schnitzel and potato salad. We ordered the typical as well as the goulash. The schnitzel was so big it barely fit on the plate. We had some amazing potato salad at another location so we were looking forward to tasting this version - it was okay, but definitely not the best in Vienna. The schnitzel was good, but due to its massive size, too much of the same. The goulash had very tender veal that flaked apart in the sauce and and the combination coated the dumplings nicely. Overall, the food was tasty but rather one dimensional and tough to finish it all. After seeing all the good reviews, we were happy to have tried it, but would likely go elsewhere around Vienna next time. read more

Why else would you go to this place but to get the wiener schnitzel! It was really good... they do have both pork and veal... both were good but i preferred the veal... One thing to note...there are 2 figlmuller in the same area...one only serves pork then bigger one serves both... The desseets were pretty good too! read more

The shnitzels were very good and very big!!! The potato salat was amazing. We had a wonderful time eating there. The only thing that bothered me was the addition on the final bill of 20 percent. I did not understand the reason for this. In the other restaurants where we ate in Vienna, we were not asked to pay such an addition on the bill. Feels a bit like extortion read more

In Germany, you can get a schnitzel anywhere, but few can say they had one at the famous Figlmüller in Vienna. There's 2 locations and both are less than 2 minutes walk from St. Stephen's Cathedral. After our city tour, we found the original one tucked inside an alleyway to the left of the Cathedral. The place is tiny, holding no more than 16-20 tables. We were lucky and got a corner table immediately. We decided to split the house specialty pork schnitzel, instead of the veal, and I ordered a bowl of potato soup with mushroom, and a roll. While waiting, I asked for the bathroom key and by the time I got back, we only waited a moment for our food. The toilet is spectacularly clean, by the way. Amazingly clean! Our server was very nice and gave us an extra plate so we could share the food. When he put down the plate, I gasped at the size of that schnitzel! Even cut in half, the schnitzel took up the plate! The schnitzel was so good!! It was tender and perfectly breaded and fried. Stephen prefers the Jagr Schnitzel with the gravy, but I liked our plain one with lemon just fine. Our lunch with a large still bottled water came to €26,60, which wasn't too bad since its touristy. read more
This place is ridiculously good! Do not be misled by the number of Asian tourists that come here, because they know where all the good food is at! I came here on a weekday around noon. The place is tugged away in an alley, but you will recognize its signature green exterior. I ordered the Tafelspitz, which literally translates to "boiled beef." The meat came in a green pot (again, the green theme) and was in broth with some veggies. The beef was nice and soft in texture, with the right ratio of meat to fat. The broth was surprisingly flavorful and I drank that baby up to the last drop! The dish comes with a potato salad with two sauces on the side. Additionally, I ordered an Almdudler, which is a non-alcoholic drink (pacing myself) that tastes like the equivalent of American ginger ale. I remembered a party being turned away when they arrived around 12:20pm - that is ridiculous considering it opens at noon! My advice then is to come right at noon, or at least make a reservation beforehand, because it does get packed! I did not have the Wiener Schnitzel, but that beast was larger than the plate it came on when I saw it brought to the party next to me!! read more
I was not a fan of the Wiener schnitzel. It was very filling but I didn't like the flavor. In fact, there was very little flavor at all. However, I liked the potato salad. It was probably the best potato salad I have ever had. The staff was also very friendly. Although, the line(s) coming out of the restaurant were very chaotic. Side note: Make sure you make a reservation online otherwise you will be waiting in a very long line for a very long time! read more

OK - everybody go to Figlmüller BECAUSE everybody GOES to Figlmüller and you don't want to say you missed it. The food is good. The sides are nice. The wine list is great. They have a nice white that is their brand and is quite nice. It was light and fruity and cold! I had the veal schnitzel (I know many of you no longer eat veal and I understand why). It was good like a veal should be. But I will tell you that you will be just as content with the pork or chicken schnitzel (and those are less expensive!) We waited in line for about 25-30 minutes, but it went by quickly and the line continues to move every few minutes so you never lose hope :) NOTE: you can make a reservation so DO THAT and you'll waltz right in. We really liked our waiter. Or maybe I REALLY liked our waiter, but he was casual and friendly. He was pleasant and smiled at my lame attempts to use my long forgotten German. The atmosphere was perfect really. The interior was like an old manor house, library, study, gentlemen club combination with a bunch of tables set up. Very comfortable. The restaurant is now a chain (not a large one) we went to the one on "Fraenk.... something or other" or "Faedbak...something or other". Obviously, I don't remember at all it started with an "F" and not the one on the "W" street it was under renovations according to the website. If you don't wish to to spend an arm and a leg. It is not gourmet. It isn't vegan. It isn't modern food fusion, etc... Overall it is a worthwhile place. read more
I stumbled across this branch of Figlmuller looking for the actual bigger place Bäckerstraße. However this is the original 1905 location. Beware we walked in without a reservation; but they are a must. We were warmly welcomed and advised that we had taken the last of the tables for that evening, December 30. All of us ordered the Wiener schnitzel which measures about 30 cm in circumference. It is made of the choicest veal bounded into wafer thin slices. I ordered a Riesling that was out of this world. I also ordered the potatoes. This was possibly the best Wiener schnitzel I have ever had. The meat was juicy and the breading was dry. I ordered the linden berries and cucumber salad but they were not brought out. Nonetheless the meal was spectacular. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Service is impecable. read more

Pork schnitzel perfection! Been wanting the authentic version since I arrived in Vienna and glad I waited until I got to this place. Thin pork expertly and lightly coated and fried with no trace of oiliness. The portion is huge...big enough for 2 unless you are starving. The potatoe salad is a worthy accompaniment. Make a reservation to make sure you get a seat. The place gets packed. read more
Unless your completely avoiding it, you can't visit Vienna and leave without feeling you've had Wiener Schnitzel overload. Even their Starbucks and McDonalds (no, I didn't try it) had their version of a Schnitzel dish. We were hesitant to try Figlmüller only since every travel resource we came across suggested we go to Figlmüller (after-all, who wants to follow the herd?). This place, however, is the real deal. Additionally, this place claims to have originated Schnitzel more than a century ago (kinda cool). The only complaint I have: the portions are too big. This is a great choice that won't disappoint. read more

Figlmüller serves schnitzels that are larger than your face, so consider splitting with someone else! Their signature one is made from pork, but other house specialties include a veal schnitzel and Viennese boiled beef. I'd also recommend ordering a dessert here called the kaiserschmarrn, a traditional Austrian pancake served with stewed plums. This restaurant can get pretty packed, so make a reservation beforehand if possible. read more

Recommended by a local. What can I say, this was one of the first restaurants I visited during my time in Vienna. I had yet to try any schnitzel, and the one here certainly set the bar very high. There are lots of photos here already, so you can see the schnitzel is larger than the plate it's served on!!! Absolutely delicious as well, with some freshly squeezed lemon on top. The restaurant itself is located in a small alleyway, adding to the charm. I called to make a reservation beforehand, and we were 10-15 minutes late. The waiter was relatively nice (!!) about it, and we only had to wait about another 10 minutes for our table. Guess we didn't experience the stereotypical grumpy waiter of Vienna, but I'd recommend this place nonetheless! read more

Came to Figlmuller for my second visit recently - the first being 3 years ago as a college study abroad student. My memory from the first visit was a fantastic service accommodating my group of loud ten girls with a great table and even better food. I was recently in Vienna on business and decided to go back alone. From my first visit I remembered a few things: The line, the large portions, and decently expensive prices (perfect for sharing). But, as a solo diner I played it safe and ordered a classic Schnitzel to attempt to eat by myself. The service was fantastic, the portion was much too much for me to finish alone. The only downside was the price but I was prepared going into it. Overall, I would come back again and hopefully bring a few more friends to share with! read more
A must stop for any visitor to Vienna. Reservations are a must although you may get lucky during non-peak hours. Kids are welcome too. The restaurant is very small so it's tight seating but the service is very quick and the schnitzel is delicious! Bier is not on the menu but there are several good wine selections and for the kids there isn't soda, however, there are also a few sweet drinks to choose from. We've been to Vienna several times and Figlmüller's is our favorite spot for traditional schnitzel. read more
I walked in at around 6pm without a reservation (alone), and I was lucky to be given a table for 2 with the condition that I had to be out the door within an hour. This wasn't an issue as my food was delivered insanely quickly, and this seemed to be the case with all the tables around me, as well. I ordered wiener (pork) schnitzel with a side of potato salad, and I also tried two of the house wines that I was told were from their own vineyard. I'm not a wine expert, so all I will say is that the (white) wines were very tasty to me. In terms of food, both the schnitzel and the potato salad were absolutely tasty as hell. I was skeptical about walking into what seemed to be purely a touristy place, but the schnitzel definitely met the high bar for what I was looking for out of Vienna schnitzel. This place was extremely good, so I would highly recommend eating here if you're in Vienna. The service was also pretty solid, and the prices weren't too bad. It's worth noting (and you probably noticed from the pictures) that the schnitzel is a very generous size. read more
