I had just cut off all my locs after 10 years. I never had my hair cut in a barbershop before. When I went into Figs, I was greeted as I walked in. I spoke to one of the barbers named Junie and told him that I was a bit nervous as I had never had an actual haircut. He was very patient with me as I asked him questions about the style of cut I wanted. The conversation was pleasant and the haircut was amazing. Junie even gave tips on the upkeep. The shop was very clean and well decorated and there were some good tunes playing in the background. Figs and Junie both cleaned off their chairs and disinfected between clients. I got my first barber shop haircut at Figs in September after just being plain " over my hair " for the past few months. The day i went in September, I hadn't quite planned what to do with my hair but was just unhappy with my general appearance and split ends. I was originally on Amsterdam waiting outside of a barber shop for way too long, feeling ignored and unsure of my decision. Taking it as a sign from God himself, because I doubt anyone other than the guy sitting across from me, would wait that long for a haircut, I started to make my way to the train station and head home to figure out what else to do with my hair. On the block where Figs is located is a MCU ATM vestibule and also a fish spot that I had gotten take out from in the past. I went to the ATM and was walking to order some fish when I noticed the shop. It didn't look too crowded and I only wanted to inquire if appointments needed to be made before a cut . "Fig" was inside cutting a customers hair and when I asked told me he was all booked for the day but the other gentleman inside was free. I walked over to him and asked if he would cut my hair and he said sure what do you want. I told him I wanted one side of my hair shaved into a low but not bald. He said"huh, say that again? I repeated it and showed him a picture of a haircut Andrew said this, but only on this side. He said okay, and told me he could do it right then. Taking a chance and feeling nervous I sat down in the chair feeling like, what's the worse that could happen? It was covid, and I would only be seeing coworkers and my own foe the most part anyway. It was hair and it'll grow back. My nervousness had nothing to do with Junie, the barber who actually did the cut. He was very gentle, just like any guy should be with a virgin (lol) and asked me several times if I was ok. He talked me through the whole thing and made sure I wasn't uncomfortable in any way. The end result had me grinning from ear to ear, and both guys hyped me up when I was done. I left the shop happy and with more confidence than I went in. I did not feel uncomfortable being in a "men's" barbershop, and I definitely felt that I was welcomed . I have since gone back to cut the other side of my head, which Junie said would happen, and will going back regularly to keep up with my style. I never stopped in to the fish shop, but will have plenty of chances since I plan on becoming a regular. read more

My son went there a week ago and had a great cut. We where very pleased so I came in to cut mine. As soon as I sat, I got a time sensitive, very important phone call. I apologies and stepped outside to take the call. As I returned, I can only assume it was the owner who shouted at me that time is money and that the barber had lost two customers while I was out. Other offensive remarks where made by him. Mind you, there where two barbers sitting on their chairs before I stepped out and they remained in the same spot as I entered back. I too was at Fig's Barber Shop today waiting on the owner Fig to cut my hair. He came highly recommended by a colleague of mine. We are both from LA so trust me all maters are time sensitive. But as i said he came highly recommended. As i was waiting a gentleman came in demanding a haircut and said he preferred anyone. Upon sitting down he immediately got up abruptly not once but twice to take phone calls with the cape still around his neck, which i only noticed because he sat outside with the cape dragging in the dirt. The barber whom i was waiting for kindly asked when he came in the second time if he still wanted a haircut and he claimed he had an important call he needed to be on and rudely dismissed the barber. I'm writing my review because as a business owner myself i applaud the professionalism of the owner. Because if it were me i wouldn't have been to happy with the way the behavior of the customer. Tabitha was so unprofessional, I was stunned. After a friend recommended her, I phoned her about braiding my hair. Although she primarily does locks she assured me she could do my hair. I made an appointment two weeks prior to the appointment date and even confirmed with her the night before. She informed me that she had scheduled another client at the same time she previously scheduled me. She wanted to push my appointment back two hours!! When I questioned her about that, she gave me plenty of attitude and told me if I had someone else to braid my hair, I should go to them. I took off a whole day of work to get my hair braided.
