I took my family to see the Filament Theatre's production of the Snow Queen (a live "Frozen" play). I thought that since the weather was threatening....that few folks would be attending this performance....but no! The show was practically sold out! If you arrived at the theater early enough....you had a chance to make snowflakes and flowers (which would be used in the show). You could also sip free hot coco provided by the good folks at the City News Cafe. Once we were allowed to enter the theater.....the kids sat on pillows on the floor which put them thisclose to the action! The adults sat on chairs next to tables or on comfortable sofas. The Snow Queen included music, singing and dancing .... and one of the finest examples of story telling anywhere. There were also puppets that became such an integral part of the story....you forgot they were puppets! The story emphasized the importance of friendship, perseverance and our duty to garner friends as we fight evil. In the end....the good guys win....but even the Evil Queen is looked upon with sympathy....and given a chance at redemption. Across from me, sitting on the floor was a little one, maybe 3 or 4 years of age. She hardly moved during the more than 60 minute performance. She seemed to hardly blink. Yes, it was that captivating. My grandsons...one 6 and the other 11, were also deeply into the story telling, the music, dance.....bright lights and fantastical experiences as well. They also enjoyed an opportunity to interact with the actors at the end of the performance. Needless to say...their grandfather (who saw the original Filament production of the Snow Queen in 2014) sat there amazed at the talent, showmanship, and special effects (that often required a bit of your imagination) of the newest reincarnation of this timeless story. Take your family to see this show. Sip coco. Make snowflakes and flowers. Clap your hands to the music. Meet the actors.... You'll be glad you did....this is how to make memories your family will cherish. The Filament Theatre Where Families Come to Play! I've never been here and came for a special event. I was able to find parking right out front on Milwaukee on a Friday around 6:30 p.m. There is also a lot with meters about two blocks away by the laundry place. This was a cute setting for the event; however, it was pretty small for what I went to..not the theaters fault. There were two toilets, so the line was a bit long. Overall, the venue was nice for a casual event.

We love local theater, so we were excited when we won tickets to a show during a local charity raffle. Our tickets were for Robin Hood, which honestly wouldn't have been my first choice. However, the show had something for adults as well as children, with a message that left me thinking about the nature of leadership and our ideas of good guys vs. bad guys. Not bad for an hour-long play! In the lobby area, there were a bunch of kid games and activities tied to the show (like "Spin for your medieval nickname"). The theater was small and seating was arranged in a horseshoe shape. The two actors were energetic, engaging and very balletic! They did a great job slipping between several characters and in making the audience laugh. The set design was good quality and as inventive as it must be in small theaters. And the staff was wonderfully welcoming and warm. I'm delighted! Next show is "Van Gogh's Cafe" at one of our favorite local restaurants, Fannie's. We're excited!

There is a parking lot!! It's not big but HUGE WIN... We got two parking spots in the lot and didn't have to search for street parking. PTL! The play place is so big and very clean. There is a variety of spots for the kids; a big climbing area, a camp area, a small play cafe/market and of course a soft Play and library for littles under 4. I especially love that there is a cafe with coffees, drinks, juice and snacks for people to enjoy in their many seating areas. It perfect! The staff is super nice! We will for sure be back.

We spent a cold Chicago morning at Wonderplay after hearing positive feedback and stories through social media. To avoid cabin fever (for our toddlers and ourselves as parents), we loaded ourselves in the car and bit the $22-play-fee bullet (two free adults included). Play areas are shoe-free and socks-only. There are little cubbies for adults and kids alike to store shoes, jackets, and bags. It was pretty chaotic at the entrance when we arrived but we still managed to find an open cubby. We arrived to a PACKED facility but manage to find our way to a corner with our coffees (I ordered a Vietnamese iced coffee; it's VietFive so I pretty much had to!) where we can tag team playing/supervising our toddler. There's a nice area for little ones under 4 to read of quietly place; surrounded by couches where caretakers can relax. Our toddler most enjoyed the adjacent market/kitchen are which included several wooden climbing structures and slides. Next, we went up into the climbing area which requires supervision for the littlest ones. Our brave little toddler had fun going through the whole structure twice before tapping out ("all done") despite the older kids 3+ as well as adults darting around / past us every so often. Last area we played in was the camping area. Our toddler loved the different play houses available and how it was less crowded than the kitchen area by the time we ventured over. There was a large climbing dome in the middle but it was still too advanced for us to really partake. I'm glad there were sanitizing stations throughout the facility. I wish that bathrooms weren't socks only since I did see liquid on the floor as well as a dirty shoe mark. And my only easy peasy suggestion would be adding adult height ledges so that we can place our coffees safely out of reach from the kids. We had a lovely time and plan to be back again!

They love free play and everything Fit City has to offer. Both of my kids also attended the preschool program, Learn and Play PreK, at Fit City Kids and we have been so happy with the early childhood educational experience the preschool offers. The unique program blends creative play with age-appropriate academic learning. Students make friends while learning in a safe, fun, and creative environment. Ms. Daye and Ms. Vanessa provide outstanding structure, guiding students to burn off their energetic wiggles and teaching preschool academics that prepare them for pre-k 4 and kindergarten. My 3-turning-4-year-old has mastered all her letters and numbers, can do basic addition, and writes her name and other words. My first-grader, who attended the preschool there several years ago, was more than prepared for elementary school. The unique environment lets students release their toddler- and preschooler-level energy in the indoor play space during cold Chicago winters. In warmer weather, students enjoy the outdoors at a local park or the outdoor field right at the school. You should check this place out! Next year, they will offer a full-day option, and you can customize morning, afternoon, or full-day attendance to create a schedule that works for you. So much more to offer than a traditional daycare.

I've seen Fit City Kids, having lived fewer than two miles away, but this was our first visit and it was great. The entrance fee wasn't bad, especially since one can stay for the full open play time. They have several different areas for play. There is a basketball court area, a play soccer field, gymnastics space, and an indoor playground. There's also a small area that is specifically designed for children aged three and under, although we were told that kids can play in any section (except for the bounce house, which is for the private parties). Our one year olds mostly played in the soccer area, having fun just running around. There's one half of the place where you can wear shoes or not (the basketball/soccer areas) and then in the other half you may not wear shoes. There are one or more party rooms in the back of the facility. (I'm not sure if they overlap parties or not; there were four happening on the day we were here.) Food is not permitted in the facility except for in the party rooms or in the front "lobby" area. They have a few snacks for sale, and based upon the water I bought for my babe the prices don't seem ridiculous. I really appreciate that they don't appear to have any restrictions on bring your own snacks and water, just asking that you respect the areas in which you can eat them. They don't have a water fountain (unless I just wasn't looking in the right places) so bring your own drinks. One downside is that I found only one changing station in the entire place. Don't look for it in the women's room (or probably the men's room, either, I'd expect) but in the individual gender neutral bathroom. With the number of children who might be here at any time and the age ranges they welcome, I was really surprised to see just the one. On the other hand, it was an actual changing table rather than a station that is bolted into the wall and folds down, which always make me a little nervous. They also don't have much space for parents to sit. There are some tables in the "lobby" and a few benches outside the various play areas, but it might be difficult for someone who needs a chair/seat, or someone who's disabled, especially if they want to be closer to the activity areas and keep an eye on their children. Another thing they need to work on is the parking lot. Their parking lot is really large, especially for Lincoln Square--and it's free!--so that's all to the good. Ideally they'd have straight parking spaces since that allows for the most spots; the lot is a bit narrow, so they've opted for diagonal with a few straight. But they need to paint the lot! Driving through this lot was difficult because people parked like they've never parked before. We will definitely return. There are several indoor playgrounds around and I'd like to try the different ones that offer entrance to kids as young as mine in part so we can figure out which are our favorites. But after my experience here I imagine we may be purchasing a membership in the future.

Before they opened, they were doing pop-up events at markets, fairs, and festivals, and they had an activity in the children's area at AppleFest last year. They opened in the last month or so and today I finally was able to visit! On Fridays, they have a session called Fluffle Babies (did you know that a group of bunnies is called a fluffed? I didn't!) for children up to age one and their caregiver(s). My baby is less than a month from turning one so I needed to get in here quickly! It was a fun morning. The owner was our host, and she had selected a topic for us to all share about so that we had a starting place for conversation. We introduced ourselves and our little ones, and shared our perspective on the morning's discussion topic. Then she introduced the art play for the day, which this morning was edible paints where we used rice cereal with food dye to color the cereal. Jinny explained that it's helpful to teach children not to eat paint, even though this is edible, because when they start playing with tempura paints, acrylics, and so on they will not be edible. My little one stirred the "paint" a little, ate some, smashed her hands in it, and crawled around. It was a fun morning for her! There are several different stations and tables for kids to partake in their activities. I'll be this is a fantastic place to have a kids party! When you enter you'll take your shoes off and there's a partial wall with a door to keep children from scampering off once they enter the art space. There's a tinker bar, several sinks, a play area with magnetic tiles, a place for playing with water... there are so many possibilities for children to have fun and be creative. I attended one of the toddler classes and it was good, but perhaps a little advanced for my daughter; it was ages 1-5, and there's a huge difference in one year olds (which is my daughter) to five year olds. Given that, the fact that I live in one of the outer neighborhoods now (instead of five minutes away), and that the class is on a weekday so I can't miss work each week I am not sure I'll be able to continue the class. But we may stop in on an open play day or something. I love the concept of this place and am look forward to visiting again and continuing to learn some fun ways to encourage artistic creativity in my little one! They are good about safety. Once the class starts, they lock the door (ask me how I know--luckily the babe was inside with grandma in the event I was locked out the entire time!). They have some great options for parents with slightly older children, as they have offered drop-in play for Maifest and they have it for Square Roots, too. I love that they offer this for parents to have just a little free time while their kids are having a blast on their own. Parking is street only or the lot across from Old Town School if it's not in use/blocked.

There are two large inflatable-surrounded trampolines. Next Level has a small play area for very little kids - the other attractions are probably too tricky unless your kid has a great sense of balance and agility. I appreciated that they had a small air hockey table available for $1 per play. The larger air hockey table is $2 to play. The seating area has mostly large picnic-style tables. Everything seemed very clean and well maintained. The bathroom even smelled like cleaning products, which is a great sign. The price is reasonable, but I docked a star because they don't allow outside food. The perfect play place allows for snacks to keep the kiddos fueled up.
