Following my eye exam with Dr. Nguyen on May 6, I received a new prescription and purchased a pair of glasses. Unfortunately, the glasses did not improve my vision, so I returned them and ordered another pair. After trying those glasses for a couple of months with no noticeable improvement, I scheduled another appointment--this time with Dr. Filer--on July 15. During that visit, Dr. Filer confirmed that a stronger prescription could be written, but also noted that due to the cataracts in my eyes, a stronger prescription likely wouldn't help. He did not recommend surgery at that point, as the cataracts were not severe. I continued wearing the glasses from June in the meantime. Still struggling with my vision, I later purchased a pair of reading glasses using the same prescription, hoping it would help. That pair also failed to improve my vision. Out of continued concern, I sought a second opinion on September 15. After a thorough exam, the new doctor confirmed that my cataracts were not yet serious enough to warrant surgery. When I showed her the prescription I had received from Dr. Filer's office, she expressed disbelief and stated that it was essentially reversed compared to her findings--including the astigmatism correction. I used her corrected prescription to order a new pair of glasses, which finally provided the clear vision I had been seeking. I'm sharing this experience not only to express my frustration and disappointment but also in the hope that it might help prevent a similar experience for others. Note: When I requested Dr. Filer reimburse me for the glasses I had purchased using the 'wrong' prescription, I was met with silence. read more

His office staff is feckless. I have called a couple of times to receive a copy of a medical record and NOTHING. In the 3rd attempt, she stated they would send a message release form--2 weeks later STILL NOTHING. I agree with the other reviewers--it is unfortunate that Dr, Filer is so great and yet his staff leaves an extremely negative impression. Not going back. If Dr Filer does not have the time to pay attention to these reviews--it is a disservice to himself and the practice. read more

Many thanks to doctor Filer for great job he has done on my wife's cataract surgery. As usual, people worry about their vision after such surgery. The morning after the surgery, after protective patch was removed from my wife's eye, she immediately was able to see with 20/20! No cloudiness, no spots, which are typical after this kind of surgery - just straight forward clear vision! Their were no swelling, no bruising. Dr. Filer is wonderful. Dr. Nguyen is great. Beware of issues with Staff. I left multiple messages and calls were never returned. I sent correspondence on multiple occasions with tracking that were never received. I did get a letter releasing me from his care. But I am unable to get the medical record as they haven't the written release. I was a patient for more than fifteen years; as was my mom and my aunt. I have been told by staff that I am incorrect, don't understand, don't know. The best part was the individual who presented herself as the Human Resources Specialist when I requested the Office Manager. After that call, I sent the first letter. No response. A pitiful excuse for a purportedly fine surgeon. Dr. Filer placed a Symfony lens in cataract surgery. It made no difference to my vision. He told me it would improve. I was stupid enough to trust him - it has not improved. To make matters worse, he placed the same lens in my other eye a week later. He sent me to a specialist at UCSF, Dr. Chu, if I recall. He gave me a 17% chance of failure to change the lenses. However, I decided that I would not take a chance at losing my vision so shall go to Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, England. The globally known finest eye surgeons. Yet I still have a risk that the surgery will fail. Thank you, Dr. Filer! You made an extra sum using Symfony and have potentially caused me to be blind. I shall return to yelp after the UK surgery. It was delayed due to pandemic. Now I'll pay over US$5,000 for each eye plus travel and accomadation. There remains the risk of blindness. Yes, the risk of changing the lens remains. If I lose my vision then I'll see Dr. Filer in court. His staff wouldn't release my medical documents without payment. How absurd? I paid for improved vision and do not have it then pay for documents? Another dr. present overhead my complaint and told them not to charge me. The office staff represents Dr. Filer perfectly. I've been seeing Dr. Filer for 10 years now, he's a good doctor, friendly. I recently received a notice in the mail to release me from the practice, I am surprised as I am never late, Pay my bill on time, I never cancel and I'm always accommodating when they changed my appointment, friendly. I have noticed in the reviews that there have been a few patients who also received a notice to release them from practice, One in which who had been with Dr. Filer for 15 years. I called and spoke with the office manager, Natalie who sounded like a tape recorder and kept repeating her answers, very unfriendly, no empathy, all the while keeping her tone very low, this woman is very cutthroat. When I asked her why I was let go, she said she wasn't allowed to tell me and that this was the decision of Dr. Filer which I do not believe because doctors never get involved with those issues, they just deal with their patients and I believe she's using that excuse as a scapegoat. By law they really do not have to disclose the reason why, although it is not helpful for the patient, and most practices will worry about a lawsuit should they disclose the reason why, although it really is a case of he said she said and there would be no proof of what they tell you. After 10 years of loyalty it is rather disturbing to be dismissed for no reason at all, there really should be better laws to protect the patients in the these cases and better training for managers to handle these cases where they are not using the doctor as a scapegoat, if they are friendlier on the phone in explaining why they are not allowed to discuss the reason and with sympathy, apologize to the patient, patient's will usually be calmer and therefore move on. I was, however, determined to find out the answer, I called a few times, sent a few emails and sent a fax, only to have a knock on my door from the police, I do not recommend my method, calling even a few times can be considered harassment calling, although I never left anything threatening, I simply just asked I would really like to find out the reason why,so as of now I have stopped calling faxing and have moved on by no choice, it's really a no-win situation. The way Natalie goes about this, by dismissing patients so abruptly without warning, no reason, leaving the patient to ponder why, is cruel and inhumane, therefore I do not recommend this office, although Dr. Filer is very good, you will be at risk for abandonment later on. Most of the time the front desk staff has always been very friendly, however, I did encounter a new hire, Amalia upon checking out, she harassed me over a bill that I did not owe yet; I saw Dr. Filer two months ago and the insurance just processed the check for that and they have not mailed me the bill, she insisted I was 60 days overdue and that they mailed the statement and I did not pay it which was not true, she kept asking me how would I like to pay, can I go home and call her, etc., I left the office saying bill me........ she continues to work here. What office out there keep staff on who harassed the patients, doesn't make sense to me. read more

I have been seeing (no pun intended) Dr. Filer for many years now and have found him to be extremely thorough, knowledgeable, and caring. He even takes the time to walk you out to the reception after the exam. How many doctors would do that these days? I had an appointment with Dr. Filer this afternoon. I called his office and notified the staff that I will be running 5-10 mins late! When you are traveling from South Bay you never know if there will be traffic or not! From Los Gatos to San Mateo! My appointment was at 2:15 I was there at 2:22 they told me I am 15 mins late! I was only 7 mins late!!! Then the front desk lady came to me that doctor can not see you because you were late! Here I am travelled for almost an hour to get here, normally open windows with doctors is 10-15 mins! They refused to see me! Not that there is no good ophthalmologist in Los Gatos area! I am just loyal to the doctors that I see so despite the distance I troubled myself to come all the way because Dr. Filer is very nice person! I know I was late 7 mins but the lady in front desk even didnt tried to ask doctor (considering how far I travelled) to perhaps see me in between patients!!! I am more mad at the level of communication from the front desk lady than doctor not seeing me! I guess Dr. Filer is very busy so they dont care to lose a loyal patient! read more

Noble professional describes Dr. Filer. I've had two successful cataract surgeries and Dr. Filer's follow-up was outstanding. He made surgery a seamless process... confident, upbeat, compassionate and a great sense of humor. During your visit he gives you undivided attention and explains things clearly. I was really impressed by the things he informed me about glaucoma that NONE of my previous eye doctors EVER told me. This is a man clearly devoted to his profession. We used him for years, never bought glassed there as they were expensive but he gave us excellent treatment. Our problem came when without ceremony or warning they sent us a letter saying we were no longer welcome at their practice. My wife had made an appointment, had to cancel and reschedule, then had to cancel that one the day before. A week later they booted us, this after seeing them for over 15 years and probably waiting more than 15 hours aggregate at appointments when they were running late. We didnt get mad or complain, we just waited our turn and went in. We have insurance and always paid our bills on time. So while we like Dr. Filer, I can't really recommend them as their business practice is suspect. BTW, my wife loves her new doc so life goes on. read more

My mom has been seeing Dr. Filer for years. I'm glad they finally got the right people to get this place going. We've had some issues in the past with bad customer service from the front desk and to actually see some smiling faces makes a huge difference. Dr Filer and Dr. Nguyen are fantastic. I feel I'm in great care. My contact lenses fit superbly. I am only rating a 3 because a couple of the women that are part of the staff, the admins / answer phones, take appts etc. are extremely pretentious, at least with me they are. And I feel very uncomfortable every time I go in there or have had to call ask for assistance. There is one Elena who could not be bothered to help me with a question. I went to Dr Filer for a consultation on a floater in my right eye, not for glasses as I have my own optometrist. When I went to fill out the paperwork, upon arriving, a form authorizing a charge for "refraction" was slipped in the pile. I asked what that was for- ( I taught physics so I know that refraction is the bending of light as it changes mediums) and she couldn't tell me other than eye exam. I refused asking her why they just didn't call it eye exam and she couldn't tell me. After waiting an additional 20 minutes I was led to another waiting room. After another 15 min, an assistant came and told me that I would see the optometrist for my eye exam and dilation. Again, I said no, that wasn't why I was here, I had an optometrist and only had a few questions I wanted confirmed. After another wait I was led to an optometrist, who promptly tried to talk me into an dilation and proceeded to check my glasses and give me an quick eye exam, the whole time insinuating that my glasses needed to be updated etc. By then, all I wanted to do was get out of there- this was a high pressure place to sell glasses. Eventually I saw Filer, who was brisk and curt and said he couldn't help me if I wasn't going to get my eyes dilated. I asked him questions and got out of there. When I paid my copay upon exit, the receptionist was rude as well- I guess you only get courtesy if you spend the big bucks. My companion who was waiting to drive me (I expected to get my eyes dilated and would have had it not been such a high pressure sell) told me the place reminded him of a mall Lens Crafters-not what I wanted or expected. Of course, like others before me, I got the letter telling me I was no longer welcome in the practice- like I'd go back. No means no! I counted four times that I told them I wasn't buying glasses, yet I was ignored, pressured to do so. No means no, whether I'm buying a car, going on a date or getting medical treatment. This experience was horrible and I would run, not walk away from this guy and PacificEye Specialists. read more

While I am hesitant to review a doctor, a noble profession in itself, it does have merit and a chance to compliment a practice. The office staff and doctors should be acknowledged and appreciated, I have had failed a couple field tests in the past, this time, I met with Dr. Morioka first, then they tested my eyes, but left the failing field test for last. Heartless and uncaring. Dr. Filer provided my elderly mother with a prescription for glasses in 2011. She is currently very ill and in the hospital, and the staff misplaced her glasses. Dr. Filer refuses to authorize to extend the prescription in order to provide her with a replacement pair of glasses, even though I explained that my mother is frightened and confused because she can't recognize faces without them. I further explained that she has been in the hospital for a month, and her increased confusion was only exacerbated by this unfortunate situation. Even though Dr. Filer has the ability to extend the prescription under the circumstance, he refused to do so, which I believe is a demonstration of his lack of thought and consideration for his patients. Unfortunately we started with another Ophthalmologist for my mother's cataracts. The surgery was a failure and she was getting horrible care. On the recommendation of our GP we switched to Dr. Filer who immediately understood the situation and initiated correct care with the help of a Retinalogist. The staff is very competent and friendly. I can't praise Dr. Filer enough. He just did my cataract surgery at Mills and I simply couldn't believe the care and professional job he did. In all my years (and they are many) I have never had a doctor who was so thorough and detailed oriented as Dr. Filer. I had three pre-op visits and at least four post-op. My eyes are great but the care I got from Dr. Filer was incredible!!! He and his nurses are the best!!! I know because I had a really, really bad experience with shoulder reconstruction surgery. the difference in professionalism and care was like night and day.
