No beef with the merchandise purchased, other than the exorbitant price-but that is on me for spending so much ($50 for a knit cap, who does that?). My issue is with customer service, or lack thereof. The items I purchased went on sale just after Christmas. I emailed Filson several times and received an auto-replay each time promising to have a response within 48 hours. That didn't happen-ever. I tried calling but never got through. I used to own quite a bit of Filson gear in the past which very unfortunately got destroyed during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I used to see their gear more often at different gear stores but it seems now they are mainly offering their gear from their own stores. My last remaining Filson gear is a combo creation between Le Chameau's rubber boots using Filson's tin cloth. I still miss my Filson gear and especially the great belt I had but the prices of Filson's gear has gone up substantially over the years while the quality/service is much more questionable than it was to the point that I can't justify replacing my lost gear at this point along with the 2012 buyout of the company that has changed what it used to be. This store location is still pretty cool to visit and check out but the prices really leave one with sticker shock from the past when it was expensive but doable for the quality while now the price and quality point are out of whack. read more

RIP Filson, 1897-2012. Seven years ago, out-of-state Bedrock Manufacturing bought our little rugged outdoorsy store and made it what it is today - and that's why I'm writing. My husband has an old sweater he loves from Filson 1.0. After years and years (decades?) of wear, he tried to take it in for a cuff repair. The repair staff, once immensely helpful, standing in front of a sign that said "repairs" said they couldn't help - not at all. We thought that was strange as in the past they would stand by their guarantee and if they couldn't fix it they would offer to replace it... still wanting to support the store, I bought my husband a fancy brand new sweater for Christmas. He said they were mean when he tried to take it back. I had to go back myself with the unworn sweater. Customer service Filson models were also rude to me. The guy who helped me reluctantly returned he item back to my card - but said, don't let this happen again. Ok, got it. The store is gorgeous, but what a sad illusion of its former glory. I saw an older gentleman walking in as I came out. I wanted to stop him and make sure he knew this wasn't the same old store. But I guess this review will have to do. read more

Is there a lower rating than one star? I discovered that an old pair of Filson's shoes I owned were covered by warranty. I was ecstatic. They gave me a RA number to return them and I told them that IF they could be repaired, to do so and also QUOTE me on replacing the Vibram soles. After three weeks, four calls and explaining three more times what I wanted, I waited two more weeks (First call Feb 25th and last call April 11th!) Horrible service! No one called me with the quote. They finally called and told me my shoes were done, repaired AND that they re-soled them, and asked for $100 to send them back! Vibram soles in Denver are about $40, and being a senior citizen, I really WANTED A CHOICE as to what I would pay. But they gave me no choice. What they gave me was the worst customer "service" I've seen in a really long time AND a $100 blackmail request to recover my shoes. I have been wearing Filson Clothing for 40 years. I own more of it than any one else I know. So I am a pretty big fan of the brand. But the new store, while beautiful, is a big disappointment. Filson has obviously decided to go all in on the fashion side of the house and drop any pretense of catering to real outdoors enthusiasts. To be sure some of their products are still the traditional items, but they are getting hard to find among the candles and soaps. The biggest heartbreak of all was that I did not see a single one of the staff who have helped me over the years. Now they all seem replaced with "filson models" who are very friendly but don't know much about the gear or the places one might use it. I may still find the occasion to buy a thing or two. Complete disappointment with our recent customer service experience at your flagship store. We are a local company looking to outfit our employees with jackets and pants. Prior to visiting your store one of our colleagues called to see if there would be any discount we could receive for a bulk order. We were told we could get a 35% discount for 20 items. Great! Each employee visited the store to pick out the proper size and style they wanted. Some even put them on hold and were told they could hold until Friday 11/17. When we came in on 11/17 to purchase the items, which were already selected and in stock (around $5000.00), we were told by the store manager that we cannot get any discount without registering each employee and purchasing our items online. We were already there to purchase the items selected and were never told we could only order online for the discount. Without any other solution offered to purchase in person we were turned away to do it online. We are also locally owned and operated, and in the end, insult to injury, was how your store manager walked away without saying a word. From the beginning her attitude was cold and unwelcoming. I bought the journeyman on a trip to DC at one of their stores. I wore it one time. ONE TIME. I tried to return it immediately after because the straps did not fit comfortably for long-term wear. I'm a woman, I have no idea if that is part of the issue but the bag sags even when the straps are at their tightest and it's uncomfortable. I told Filson that I had worn the item. I was very clear about the situation. I sent the bag back. They sent it back to me saying it was not saleable because it was worn. Yeah I told them that. I contacted customer service again because I can't believe that a $500 bag isn't returnable after 1 use. I was denied again. They say it's their 'policy'. WTF kinda policy is that? They don't care at all about customer satisfaction. So yes I have a very expensive, cool looking, uncomfortable bag that I can't travel with as planned. I bought a Filson umbrella for my husband a while back. The latches/locks failed within a year, but otherwise the umbrella is in perfect shape. I asked about having it repaired and was told that it had reached the end of its life. No one asked me when I bought it! I am willing to pay for the repair, but was brushed off. Their web site says: We guarantee every item made by Filson. No more, no less. We believe in our products and stand by the materials, quality, and workmanship for the lifetime of the product. The product lifetime specifically refers to the time at which, through normal use, the product can no longer function in its intended purpose. I am not sure what Filson considers the "lifetime of the product" but I hate to add this perfectly fine umbrella (except for the lock) to landfill! read more

It's not the same Filson I once knew. I looked up the owner of Filson and found that Bedrock Manufacturing Company out of Texas bought Filson in 2012. Recently, i took a jacket in for repair, the primary problem was a bad plastic zipper they had replaced before. The secondary minor problem was a small tear on the pocket corner that was repaired. It was mailed back to me without the zipper being replaced. I was willing to pay to have the original metal zipper reinstalled. I'm done with Filson / Bedrock B.S. read more

Filson talks a great game on their website, but after they have your money...good luck on any customer service. Here's an email I wrote to their customer service department: "Several years ago, my wife and I were in Portland, OR on vacation. We stopped in the Filson store downtown, as she needed a high-quality coat to use in the cold and rain. The coat we bought seemed great initially, but over time it was apparent that it was a dust magnet--the black coat was soon spotted with hundreds of pieces of fuzz that were impossible to remove. Using a brush was ineffective, and only caused the wax coating to shed. Last year we were on vacation in Seattle, so we decided to stop by your headquarters to see if we could get some help. One of your representatives took a look at the dust and fuzz coated coat, and she told us it was manufactured with a soy-based wax that Filson had discontinued, (She basically admitted it was a failed experiment on Filson's part). We asked what we could do...a credit perhaps on the purchase of a new Filson jacket? She replied the best she could do was give us a tin of the current oil-finish wax to apply ourselves. HUH?? We asked to speak with a manager. The manager repeated the same weak offer. Since we were at the factory, as then asked if the experts there could apply the wax. Nope! We left very dissatisfied. The entire experience was horrible, and doesn't square with the statement on your website proclaiming "We guarantee every item made by Filson. No more, no less. We believe in our products and stand by the quality of workmanship, craftsmanship and materials in each one. We guarantee the lifetime of each item against failure or damage in its intended usage." So what do we do now? My wife has a winter coat that not only looks horrible, it's not waterproof either. I would appreciate a reply with real, practical advice, and I would expect Filson to stand by your guarantee." And Filson's response? "Hello Richard, Thank you for reaching out to Filson! I do sincerely apologize for the experience that you had at our Seattle store, Richard. What we can do is strip the coat of the soy wax by doing an enzyme bath, and then re-wax it using the oil finish wax. Breakdown is as follows for the cost: $75 - Rewax (Longer Jacket Styles) $55 - Enzyme Bath/Odor Removal $7.95 - Return shipping costs I can set you up with an RA to begin that process, if that interests you. If you have any questions, please let us know!. Best regards, Sara Filson Customer Service" So...after spending over $400 on the coat, Filson wants us to spend another $137.95 to make their mistake right. Really?? Beware of Poor Customer Service & Lack of Transparency! I purchased a Filson watch for my husband with a "lifetime guarantee." Watch stopped working one year later. We sent it back to Filson with copy of original receipt & box for repair or replacement as instructed by Filson. Then received a call from Filson that it can't be repaired because they stopped selling the watch & can't get needed part thus our warranty was void. After several emails to various people in Filson's Repair dept they agreed to give us a store gift card. We refused that offer & wanted price paid refunded to our credit card as originally used. Again another song & dance through emails that their system doesn't allow credit card refunds after 30 days. When we asked the repair department for the name & email of the regional manager they emphasized they don't give it out! We then took watch & all paperwork to the manager at Ballard Filson's. He listened to our problem & said he recently dealt with a similar situation with another customer. He then submitted our information to his regional manager & within three days received email that a credit of $198.00 was being credited to our Visa. We received the best customer service here. The staff is friendly and open to answering any questions you have. We came here on a whim, but left with a new belt. The gentleman assisting my husband with picking the right belt size, gave me a history of the business while I waited. They even offered coffee or water to pass the time. We found the perfect belt and even got it embossed with his initials before we left. Great store that provides quality merchandise. Our friends who came with us, he owned his grandfather's hunting gear that barely started to show any ware. I think they're still in the process of finding a balance between producing rugged hunting/forest service gear as well as expanding into some "lifestyle" fashion type products. The service I got in the store was very good, but I found out that they no longer add game pockets into their waxed cotton jackets, so that's a let down. Still, stuff looks pretty rugged. I was surprised at the lack of a game pocket, since LL Bean (who have also expanded into "fashion" clothes) still has both rear game pockets and front shell pockets in their waxed canvas coats. Filson still offers good hunting gear as far as I can tell. If you want to buy their gear, just call ahead and ask specific questions to make sure it will meet your needs. Let me start off by saying I've been an emphatic Filson fan for a long time, including purchasing more $$$$ in clothing, gear and supplies than I'd like to admit. I (italics) "have been" a major fan of their style, quality, and perceived customer service commitment... ... until Filson completely screwed me over on an actual customer service claim. They DO NOT stand by their goods. At 2-3x price tags 100% guarantee on goods is an expectation, not a nice corporate slogan. For those that care for the details, I purchased a Filson backpack with a flawed strap design. This design flaw as it turns out was well known and reported by many upset customers over a span of years, but long delayed in repairing (Ranger backpack, for sale more than 3 year prior to a design update). I have inquired multiple times with Filson about a) updating their design so they don't sell an off-brand poor quality product, and b) about getting a design repair on my pack. Both fell on deaf ears until recently, when a nice customer service rep (Lucas - note, not blaming you Lucas) promised to make this happen. Ultimately, Filson still wouldn't honor the repair and I'm stuck with an overpriced backpack with faulty straps. Also, I even offered to pair the service fee to fix the straps should Filson renege on their service guarantee, to which they declined... Ultimately, I'm not a Filson customer anymore, which is disappointing for me and hopefully Filson. But who knows, at $400 a sweater I guess you can get away with giving a few customers the bird and sailing into the NW passage (with overpriced waxed canvas overalls of course) without a care besides which Instagram influencer to sponsor next. I bought the Double Hunting Pants and Filson sent me the wrong waist size then refused to take the pants back because I'd had the legs hemmed. The products quality was poor. I recently bought two sets of suspenders for our wool pants. When they arrived we found it was impossible to get the front buttons to go through the suspenders. Apparently the front button holes were smaller than the back side. The adjustment buckle is extremely flimsy and barely works. Apparently Filson has no quality control. They however have no problem charging twice as much as anyone else. My next suspenders are coming from "The Suspender Store" on the internet, at half the price and twice the quality. read more

I love Filson. Everything they make is durable, utilitarian, and attractive. And their flagship store down by the stadiums is en experience. You can see them make the clothes right there. It's awesome inside, too. It's disappointing reading so many of the reviews on here. They're often so petty and petulant and complain about things beyond Filson's control like taxes, or things that you should expect or even cherish about a small, boutique, local company like having things sell out. It's clear most of these reviewers are old Sears-era customers who expect perfect market knowledge, mass factory production, and warehouse surplussing. Since my last review, Filson's downward spiral has continued, if not accelerated... Tons of new product offerings that are not the classic items that were once so cherished and loved. The designs and breadth of their product lines is rapidly growing with much more seasonal "collections" on rotation. Prices are going up while quality gets more crappy and mass produced. Filson is loosing their boutique manufacturing appeal. The staff working at their new flagship store is a joke. They have little product knowledge and arrogant attitudes. A bunch of young transplants new to Seattle who want to live the Urban Logger/Wood Boat Builder/PNW Pioneer lifestyle rather than get their boots dirty in the field. I had an experience related to a Shelter-cloth jacket that I want to relay. I will preface this by saying that I am a long-time fan and customer of Filson. However, I purchased this jacket at the outlet store at a barely-reduced price and it immediately started to fail. The moleskin collar discolored within two weeks and after 18 mos. of very light use, rips are starting to show up on the sleeve cuffs. I brought it back to the outlet center and they told me to go to the main store - outlet clothes have NO warranty. The two floor-people at the flagship store, rather glibly, told me that, "Yeah, we had a batch of these that were bad, so we sent them to the outlet store. You should oil/wax this jacket more. We can't do anything for you." While these are not catastrophic product failures, this jacket is definitely not an unfailing good and the customer support was really poor! I will never go back to the outlet store again, nor would I encourage anyone else to go there. The prices are either the same or slightly reduced and there is NO support. If this is the policy, there should be a huge "Buy at your own Risk" sign at the outlet store. If my jacket had known defects, that should have been made know. read more

I used to be a loyal Filson customer who owned 12 bags and was always recommending them to friends. Ever since Kartsotis/Bedrock bought Filson in 2012, the company has gone downhill. I bought 2 shirts in early June. They were nice, but not quite what I was looking for. I mailed them back, and after a lot of emailing back and forth and being told my return had been lost, I finally got a refund at the end of July. I complained about the experience and the rep who answered my email said she'd send a gift card in the mail as an apology. The promised gift card never arrived, and when I emailed Filson again 3 weeks later, they told me they'd email a gift card "today." That too did not arrive. When I contacted Filson again, I finally got a gift card for $25. $25 is enough to buy some leather cream from Filson or maybe a pair of socks on sale. I gave away the gift card, and will no longer be buying Filson or recommending them. read more
