I still like eating lunch at Fin in Guilderland. I don't mind eating alone after spending the morning at the gym. The meals are wholesome and fresh. Fish tacos are my goto. They're "Korean style," which means they're served with kimchi. Normally, I substitute a salad for the taco shells since I'm diabetic but this time they were out of greens. So the kitchen served me flour taco shells which were toasted until they were very crunchy. They were actually really good. Kimchi on the bottom. Little sautéd chucks of juicy salmon on top. Since I ordered two tacos, the bill came out to $16. I think I'll order them that way again the next time I visit. Service is great. The staff told me it would take 10-15 minutes to make my meal. I asked if I could go pick up a few items at Market 32 at the other end of the plaza. They're so friendly. They said that would be fine with them. When I returned my meal was ready. It was piping hot. Perfect. Delicious. As always, Fin is clean and has very nice food displays. Business was steady. I was surprised to see that so many customers who arrived for take out meals were older men. They might be retired. They apparently have good taste in food. I first came to this store, which is now also a quick service kitchen, when it first opened over 10 years ago. It was nice to see that a local fishmonger has stayed open in the area. There are a few and far between for sure. Today I stopped in to check out their fresh fish as I was in the area. On Tuesdays they do have a new delivery. I reviewed their website before stopping and they listed a couple of fish I wanted. I was interested in Bronzino, but once there saw they only had two whole fish left, and I wasn't sure when I would actually cook it. I decided against buying it today. I did buy a half pound of sockeye salmon and Arctic char. I also picked up a couple of packages of frozen fish, Haddock and some Scottish salmon. The prices were $$; for fresh fish it's a bargain. A gentleman came from the kitchen area shortly after I walked in and started looking at the display. Took my order, and tried to sell me on a previous cut which I declined because it was the tail end. He picked out a full fillet and I assumed that he cut the thick portion, but after arriving home and ready for the pan, found that he gave me a tail end. That's what I get for not being specific. I would like to mention he did not ask me how I wanted it cut. He was friendly enough though. They take contactless payment. They do prefer cash and will give a 3% discount for cash. read more

This is a good place to go for fresher seafood in the Capital district. The fish holds together and doesn't have a fishy smell unlike some seafood counters at supermarkets. A more diverse selection of fish such as arctic char, bronzini, trout, and halibut can be sourced here. The fresh oyster, clam, and sea scallop section is always worth a look. Additionally, they have some frozen fish, crab legs, lobster tails, etc. in a separate freezer section. As I understand it, flash frozen seafood can keep for a longer duration of time without severely compromising the taste and texture. The meals I've had here have "scratched the itch" if you're looking to satisfy a taste of oceanic protein. I even remember Chef Katie (now the proprietor of Hooked Seafood) working her magic in their kitchen. There is limited seating within the shop if you want to eat in but, most of the time, I order take out. One niggling thing, for me, a person who lived in coastal Rhode Island for over 20 years, fried clams are full-belly clams, not clam strips. Flatlanders eat clam strips. My go to place for fresh seafood. The sourcing is sustainable and they pay attention to environmental issues. I first encountered this lovely group at a farmers market and they've had a brick and mortar store for many years now. The salmon is some of the best in the area. They have lunch specials. I've had the lobster rolls & the Korean barbecue tacos that have all been tasty. They also offer frozen fish and lots of sides, like seaweed salad and gazpacho. They also have take & bake suppers which are usually pretty amazing. Overall, one of my favorite places to shop and eat! read more

Covid update: owner Dora works for the NY Dept of Health in her day job, so it's not surprising Fin's COVID protocols are some of the best in town. No more than 4 shoppers in the store at one time and there's plenty of room to spread them out. You must wear a mask and put on their gloves when you enter. Takeout only which is a bummer because I love to have them shuck my oysters and eat them in the store, but I bet they would shuck them to go and you could eat in the car. (And you can call for curbside delivery if you don't feel comfortable going inside.) The fish, of course, is just about as fresh as you can get and they've got a wonderful assortment of takeout, prepare-at-home meals as well as sides. If I didn't live 40 miles away I'd be in here a couple of times a week. read more

New owners and bad experience. Called ahead to confirm availability for Christmas meal we were planning. Specifically asked about the scallops, and we were assured there were plenty and not to worry. We said we'd be driving over right away. It's quite a drive from Colonie to Guilderland, and when we got there about 30 minutes later, we were told that they were completely out. We explained what we were told and that we made a special trip. No apology - no nothing. Just too bad I guess. She offered us the remaining scallops she had in a bag which was not even enough for one serving. We have been going there over the years, but we'll never step foot in Fin's again - not my fishmonger! I stopped in again around June 13 of 2024 pick up an order again fish and chips and clam chowder. The fish once again was superb and the New England clam chowder was OK, but nothing I couldn't get better somewhere else. I usually order beforehand and then stop by later to pick it up. This is the second time I've ordered from Fish Monger. When I went to order and to stop by the first time I thought I got a little bit of an attitude. When I went to pick up the order this time, the Google directions for the establishment was off a little bit, causing me to be about 15 minutes late. When I visited the establishment, the lady that waited on me greeted me with, you're late! I explained my situation and let her know what I ordered. The lady rang me up and I thought I had everything. Good thing that the owner spoke up and said you forgot your clam chowder. It appeared as though after ringing me up for the fish, the attendant forgot the package my clam chowder in the bag .After going back for the clam chowder and have the lady package my clam chowder and give it to me, the attendant lady asked me if the name I ordered with was my first name or last name. I said it was my last name, after which the lady that waited on me just said a terse bye!, Instead of something along the lines of goodbye, I hope you enjoy your meal. Something commensurate with good business sense. Sometimes I will drive out of the way for a good meal. But for that, the meal better be good and also the service as well, as they go hand-in-hand. The chips - aka French fries are devastatingly good - it means I want to simply keep eating them one after another... crisp but not hard outside, perfect soft middle and flecks of salt perfectly flavor these lovely potatoes. A generous piece of fish that flakes perfectly in see my fork. This is an Icelandic style batter, To be clear. You can choose fresh homemade tartar with chunks of gherkins, homemade spicy of regular cocktail sauce or the simple Lemon to go with it. They also have malt vinegar in case that is your thing. I love the variation in the pieces of cabbage in the slaw. Some thinner some bigger, crisp, crunchy and lite - a perfect accompaniment. I plowed through the Massachusetts delights in no time at all. This is a small but amazing fishmonger. I wish we lived closer to them because they consistently have the freshest and tastiest fish. We've had lunch here once, which was decent. This place has some frozen items, packaged foods, etc. Some of that stuff looks great and can be hard to find elsewhere, but honestly, we just come here for the fish. Since we like making ceviche and working with fish more on the raw side, cleanliness and freshness is important to us. This is just about the only place in the area that we trust to buy from. After reading the reviews, looking at the pictures and checking out the menu, I decided that I really wanted to like this place. This quaint little place had a nice display setup along with a small dining area. The items on the menu and in the display case looked good, so I was sure this would be a home-run. I opted for the the Korean BBQ salmon and the Mahi Mahi tacos. I love salmon, but the Korean BBQ salmon taco was overly sweet in my opinion. I feel like you can't go wrong with mahi mahi in a taco, but that was a disappointment as well. The pico on the mahi mahi taco was really bitter. So much that I couldn't get the taste of the mahi. I was curious about their fish selection, so I stopped in around lunchtime. They have an extensive selection of fish, considering their tiny size. Numerous types of salmon are available. Today's special taco was Mahi Mahi, which is one of my favorite fish. I'm unable to eat anything that needs chewing (dental surgery), but went with a 1/4 lb container of the whitefish salad. I'm Jewish, grew up on the stuff. This was the BEST whitefish salad I have ever had in my life! Not weak, not too strong, it the baby bear of whitefish salads imo. read more

To be fair I want to disclose I am only reviewing the lobster roll but will provide an updated review once I get to taste other goodies from this place. I came here with intention to taste their brown butter vinaigrette lobster on their homemade herb butter roll. The lobster was succulent and I really enjoyed the butter and vinaigrette blended together. The herb butter roll was also hearty and had a good texture. I was surprised to get this for slightly under $16 (incl tax), as it also came with a side salad (I was given a choice from 3: seaweed salad, potato salad, or couscous). The side salads change each week I was told! I chose the seaweed salad to go with my roll. It was no difference from the kind of seaweed salad you'd get ordering at Japanese restaurants...which I usually like. So for that price I consider it a pretty sweet deal since the rolls I've gotten in the city are closer to $20-22. They are surely fishmongers as their shop offers daily fresh fish, oysters, clams, shrimp and much more. If you don't care for lobster you can try the crab cakes, shrimp cakes, broiled scallops, salmon sweet potato burgers, new England clam chowder, ect. But back to the lobster roll. It was bursting with flavor and definitely loaded...worth every penny! Some people prefer theirs cold with mayo and lettuce. While this is a fish market, it also has a small eat-in area where you can enjoy such items as a Lobster Roll ($14.50), Broiled Scallops ($13.50), Shrimp Salad ($9.50), Shrimp Cakes ($7), and a Salmon - Sweet Potato Burger ($6). My experience, so far, has been with purchasing fresh pieces of fish to take home to cook (Arctic Char $14.25/lb) or a Take-Home Supper ($9). I'll be cooking the Char later tonight, and it looks, smells and feels fresh. The Take-Home Supper I previously had was a Cod en papillote - they place the cod in parchment paper along with wine, butter, lemon zest, herbs, and crème fraiche. They fold the paper to seal everything inside and all I had to do was place the closed paper package in my oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. It was easy, delicious, and perfectly steamed. A great way to cook dinner for my wife when she comes home from work! Now I need to stop here for lunch some day to try a few more items. read more

What a great little place! We ordered A LOT from the menu: lobster rolls to salmon burgers - we were pretty happy! Shrimp cakes: the order comes with three cakes. I've never had shrimp cakes before and I enjoyed them very much. They come with a salad choice and side salad. The vinaigrette complemented the dish nicely. Lobster roll: I tried both lobster rolls (once at an event and then again during this dining experience). I prefer the lobster roll cooked in brown butter. The other lobster roll is mixed with mayo and fennel. I am not a fan of fennel so this was not my favorite. The "regular" lobster roll, however, was SO good. I think I could have gotten a little more meat but either way, I was happy! Salmon burger: I recommend this burger! You have a choice of bun and side. You can tell it was made of fresh salmon. They even have some frozen patties you can purchase to bring home! Korean BBQ Tacos: I am torn! The flavor was SO good. The only thing I did not like was that the taco shells were cold. I love their gluten- free shrimp cakes. They will shuck your oysters for 10 cents (yay!), and the clam chowder will make you suspect you might be on Cape Cod. I'm addicted to their cocktail sauce. I have always struggled with seafood in the Albany area. Unlike larger cities with Japanese populations, where I could buy sashimi grade fish, I never found anything equivalent in the area. That meant, that instead of searing my fish, or eating it as sashimi, I was always forced to cook it to the point where I no longer enjoyed it as much. Luckily, Fin came to the rescue. Their sashimi grade fish and raw shellfish allow me to get my craving without laying out my paycheck at the local raw bar or sushi joint. I've had a couple different oysters from there, with Malpeque being my favorite. I've also sampled a couple types of salmon, herring, seaweed salad, etc... Everything that I've had here has been top notch, and worth every penny. In addition, everything they source is responsibly harvested and sustainable, meaning I do no have the guilt hanging over my head as I enjoy the seafood. This is now the only place in the Albany area where I buy seafood. They may not be the least expensive, but after you've tasted what fish should taste like, you'll not be able to go back to buying fish from your local supermarket. read more

I was really looking forward to visiting this shop as soon as I saw it featured on the alloveralbany blog, why? A daily variety of raw oysters. The shop did not disappoint. On my first visit they had 4 types of oysters available. I ordered four of each type which Fin happily gave me in separate labeled baggies. The oysters were lovely, definitely will be coming back for more. I also couldn't help picking up a Lobster roll ($12.50 with choice of side, i went with a small cup of coleslaw). The Lobster roll is well worth the price. Nice big chunks of buttery lobster on a nutty toasted roll. I took it home for lunch but there are also dining tables in the shop if you want to enjoy it fresh from the kitchen. I also tried one of their prepared dinners. That day it was a panko crusted cod wrapped in foil. Instructions were to unwrap and broil. It was super quick, easy, and delicious for dinner. Since then I've started following their facebook because they post details, prices, and pictures of their take-home specials on a practically daily basis. I could not recommend this shop more highly. I love Fin. The staff is friendly and are more than willing to provide you with information like where the fish is from to suggestions about preparation. There is a lunch and dinner menu. For faster service, you may call ahead. However, if you go in you have time to browse the small frozen section and assorted pastas, nuts and other local items. I've gotten the salmon and sweet potato burger for lunch twice now. It's delightful. For 5 dollars, you get the burger with your choice of field greens or a roll. In addition, you have a choice of a smaller side (lentil salad, potato, seaweed and etc). That beats a Scrubway footlong anyday of the week. They accept debit and cards card. Last time I was in I forgot to bring cash and was allowed to use my card. A lot of smaller businesses have a $10.00 limit. I was chatting with one of the workers about it. He disclosed that they used to but don't enforce it anymore. The reasoning- If you let the customers pay as they can, they will continue coming back. Service, customer minded and fresh seafood- You should go...right now. P.S. I believe Fin is a pickup location for a CSA program in the area- Denison farm. So I've experienced Fin's before in the past at an event in which they were a guest and highlighting oysters and talking about who they were and what they do. Since that point and time, my wife and I had been talking about stopping into their shop and picking up a few items to try at home. Every time we happened to be up in the Albany area, we either forgot to stop in; or it was just to late in the day to really try and get there. But alas! We were finally able to stop in and check them out! Small little shop, tucked away in a shopping plaza. Nothing super huge or extravagant. But what they lack in size; they make up for in AMAZING products! This last visit, my wife and I picked up a couple nice pieces of salmon and cod to bring home and have for a dinner. With the knowledge before hand of their ocean to table accountability; we knew that the fish we got was going to be good. Well enough to say that, my wife LOVED what we got from there. She raved about how the salmon was so fresh it reminded her of the ocean and summer time spent up in Maine. Now that's a big thing for her to say; especially considering she's never that big into seafoods. Pricing there is all extremely reasonable considering that, where else can you go to in the local region and they can tell you exactly how long its been for your food to go from ocean to your table? None that I'm aware of. I can safely say that I will be coming back here again in the future to "reel in" more delicious items as the seasons change, and check out what new and excited items are in store. read more

This is not a large store so call ahead. The customer service was top notch so give them a try. I know I would if I lived in the area. Maybe I am missing something but I wasn't impressed....at all. I was in search of fresh shrimp for a New Year's Even dinner and I found a store that sold mostly frozen seafood. There were no fresh shrimp to be had. My choices were between a $30.00 bag or a $16.00 bag of farm raised shrimp from India. I could have just saved the trip and bought the same old frozen blah from Hannaford and paid a lot less for everything. Frozen seafood does not a fish monger make. The little neck clams were .60 cents more per dozen at Fin. I will say the clam chowder was really tasty although I bought a cup for a friend who was not all that impressed. The owners were nice and I really wanted to like this place but I'm just not impressed. The Off Shore Pier in North Greenbush has a far better selection at much better prices and.......FRESH SHRIMP! read more

Very respectable showing of seafood offerings. Lots of fresh and appropriately frozen options of both fish and shellfish. The intention of my visit was to find some very fine salmon, which I did. They had three very healthy looking options. I purchased some wild coho I intend to grill this evening. While I was there I tried the lobster roll- a bit of a calling card it would seem- which came with a choice of three sides- I chose traditional coleslaw. My favorite thing about this lunch was the homemade garlic roll on which the lobster sits covered in flavored butter. The roll tasted very fresh, and had the perfect balance of lightly toasted outside and creamy flavorful inside. The lobster meat was overlooked for my taste. I think $15.50 is quite reasonable for a good lobster roll, but mine was hardly bursting at the seams with meat. The coleslaw had nether flavor nor seasoning. I doubt I will eat here again, but do plan to return to purchase seafood to cook at home. read more

We have been searching for a great Lenten fish fry for a while now and I have to say, hands down, the fish fry here is seriously the best in town and the price is very fair. The tartar sauce recipe is delicious (best I've ever had in my life). The pickup service is very convenient and everyone is so friendly.
