What can I say other than "eh." I would not go out of my way to go back, but I can also say it is not the worst I've had either. The food was fresh. My Fish did not have much flavor. My companion's fish was overcooked a little. They do offer non fried options which I think is a great option. I did an order for pickup and not only was the food amazing, so was the price! I ordered a clam strip roll and rice pudding and it came to $12 and change. They put so many clam strips on my roll too, it was overflowing. The rice pudding was out of this world too. All the workers there were super nice and helpful. It had been sometime since we've been to a fish fry place, So we decided to head over to Aker's Fish House and give it a shot. The interior of the restaurant was clean, the staff was extremely friendly, and the food displays looked good. I ordered my meal, and shortly afterward, I headed home to eat. The fish fry was very good. I was given a very long piece, which I broke up to fit into the bun. The tartar sauce was delicious, and exactly what I was looking for. As for the sides, the mac and cheese was good, very traditional real mac and cheese, not that boxed stuff (which has its place). The french fries reminded me of the kind you get at baseball games when I was a little kid. They were cooked perfectly, and hit the spot. The coleslaw was yummy, with a slight sweetness to it that kept me coming back for more. Overall, we both really like this place and will definitely be coming back. It's not fine dining by any stretch, and that's a good thing, because it's a fish fry place, and a very good one at that! read more

Why am I a fan? Really it was the onion rings. A small order is large enough to be shared between 2 people. Homemade, deep fried properly, with light breading/coating. Not greasy (for onion rings, so it is relative). The fish fry itself was fine. Nothing exceptional, but no flaws, in that it is fresh and no off flavors. Tartar was ok too. Sometimes some other places can't even get that right. Some fish fry places the fry oil is too old, but not here. Clean flavors. Not a destination I would drive to just for this, but if I am going to be in the area and want some seafood this place would be on the list. read more

When I first came to Anker's a couple of years ago, it was cramped and dingy, yet packed with regulars getting their fish fry fix. It felt like a place out of time. But that era is gone. The building has been expanded. There are now several tables and a counter to eat your food inside. However, at peak times it may be hard to get a seat. The picnic tables outside are now constrained by a patio which makes it feel less like eating in the parking lot, and more like eating on a dock. Some might miss the charm of the old space. Not me. And I'm tempted to give the place four stars just on the strength of its remodel. But as far as regional fish fry places go, I have yet to find a dish that's puts the place above the pack. On our second visit, we learned from the past and avoided the clam strips, opting instead for an Ipswich clam roll, a scallop roll, a shrimp roll, and a basket of mixed fried veggies. The winners were the shrimp roll (for my daughter) and the Ispwich clam roll (for me). And while there were some good bites in the basket of fried veggies, not all the veggies were created equal, and some had a bit of raw batter still between the crisp crust and the veggie within. In the future, I'd go for a single veggie, like cauliflower instead of taking the mixed bag. The string beans and the eggplant were probably the weakest links of the bunch. As others have said, I too would recommend skipping the french fries. If you need something that's fried besides fish, there are plenty of other options beyond potatoes. Personally, I prefer a bit more kick from cocktail sauce, but Anker's has tabasco out on all the tables for those who want to doctor up the sauces a bit. It is a treat to be able to enjoy the full belly clam experience, without having to pay an arm and a leg. $7.50 for the Ipswich clam roll seemed like a good deal. And I'd like to return and try the fried smelt. One of these days, I'll learn to order a little less fried food, so I also have room to try one of the sweets on offer. But as it is, I have a hard time saying no to deep fried goodness. And every time I'm done, I can't imagine eating another bite. I'll be back, again in search of that stand out dish, that would elevate this local institution to four stars in my book. read more

I really enjoyed my meal. Light crispy Fish N Chips. Not heavy or oily at all. The staff was extremely friendly and polite and the price points were very reasonable. The only down point was the line wait. However, I'm sure this was driven by the fact that they have been closed for an extended period for a total remodel and all the regulars were happy they were open again. Today was my first visit, but the general mode of those in line was pleasant and no one was complaining about the wait (these were the regulars that were all happy this restaurant was open again). Personally, I was happy they were open as well. Nothing fancy about this place, they are not attempting to overcome any deficiencies or trying to be something they are not. Simply put....good food at a good price. Be patient and plan for a little wait. Oh yea....CASH ONLY. But no worries, there is an ATM in the foyer. Total Friends and Family recommendation. Probably 3.5 stars. So I'll start with the pros. The fish and most of the salads are good. I see some complaints about the fish with it being fried in dirty oil. I've never had that problem. I also saw some complaints about it lacking seasoning. I've never thought that. Now the bad. It's not as good as it was 30 years ago. The prices are OUTRAGEOUS. The seafood gumbo is horrible. It's literally the worst gumbo I've ever has in my life. It's not gumbo. It's more like a very lackluster Manhattan clam chowder with the smallest shrimp I've ever seen. Gumbo needs to have a roux...they clearly didn't make a roux because it is very watery under seasoned and it doesn't contain okra. The word gumbo means okra. You can't have gumbo without okra. All and all it's good but not epic. read more

As soon as you walk in, you get the feeling that this one a favorite among the locals. I witnessed the workers engaging with customers on a first name basis and it appears to be family-owned and operated. The menu provides a nice variety and includes some non-seafood options. There isn't a ton of seating inside, but there is also outdoor seating. I ordered the fish fry and the lobster roll. The fish fry was pretty standard and didn't stand out much, but the lobster was a different story. The lobster roll was PACKED full of lobster. It was a Connecticut style roll, so it was warm and there was no mayo....just butter! No lettuce, no scallions, no fillers.....just lobster! The only drawback is that they charge an 3.99% when using a credit card. I believe it used to be cash-only, so accepting credit/debit cards would be an improvement. However, it'd be nice to not have the extra. I've been here twice and may make it a 3rd time real soon. read more

We went there the other night for takeout. I got a fish fry and my daughters got a clam roll. I've never seen a fish fry this dark and hard. It was either overcooked or it was old oil. I don't know. My daughters clam roll was the same. On both there was plenty of fish and clams. I didn't like mine but I'm giving it 3 stars because my daughter liked hers. Ankers is good place for fish fries & seafood dinners and they have always had exceptional customer service. I never had a bad experience there really. I will say however some years back the Mac & cheese was better & the side salads too (well the last time I had it like 6 months ago) idk if staffing changed or it was just a bad prep day but it was still good but not like before. The serving size also went down but I completely understand that because of the times right now. Cost is up!! You won't be disappointed however even with my little constructive criticism. I have been coming to this area for my entire life, all I knew about Anker's was that my Uncle worked there in the late 70's. Recently moved nearby and decided to give Anker's a try. Unbelieveable !!!! Fantastic fried fish, fried calamari, fried clams and even their fried chicken is delicious. We also liked their clam chowder and lobster bisque. Portions were reasonable. In the future we will be exploring more of their menu. Highly recommend if you like fried seafood. read more

Weak at best. A place that fries everything should not have weak soggy fries. Passed by this place my whole life, wish I had kept it a mystery. Had the seafood sampler ( scallops, shrimp, clams, and shrimp). Pretty much all tasteless and in the trash. Fish was tough, didn't taste like much. Scallops smelled great, tasted like nothing not even breading. Clams could have just been breading. Shrimp tasted like nothing but held the taste of the sauce the best. Of course I had to doctor and add horseradish, lemon, and Worcestershire sauce. Jalapeño poppers were so bad Dad advised me against even trying them. Went to pick up my order and They forgot a side dish that I ordered, French fries were very soggy, and every time I go there, they are constantly out of food, Plus it's almost impossible to get them on the phone,you have to go there and put your order in. Ok I ordered belly clams they were cold and raw inside. My wife had an order of cauliflower and it was cold and raw inside. When I asked to have it corrected and the owner said that's how I cook them. Very gross. Being a chef for 37 years I never seen such a mess. Wow --- talk about taking your customer base for granted. As a satisfied "pre-renovations" Ankers customer, I was looking forward to their reopening after renovations. I had hoped the changes would improve customer service. This primarily takeout restaurant served tasty fish and sides, but the limitations of the facility resulted in a long line to place your order. Sadly, customer service after the renovations is worse than before, prices have increased, and the quality of the food has deteriorated. Here is my experience from last night: With a family craving fish for dinner, I logged on to see if Ankers' reinvention of themselves includes online ordering --- it does not. So, I figured I would do what I did prior to the renovations --- call in my order, to make the wait time at the restaurant shorter. My cell phone log shows that in the 30 minutes it took me to drive from my workplace to the restaurant, I placed 19 calls to Ankers (hands-free, of course). The line was busy for all calls. I arrived at Ankers to find a line going out the door and down the sidewalk. I took my place, 16th in line. The 40 minutes I waited to get to the single cash register was about equally divided waiting outside the store and inside the store. During my 20-minute wait inside, I did not hear a phone ring even once, nor did any customer come in to pick up a phoned-in order. Clearly, the phone had been taken off the hook. Apparently in the newly-renovated Ankers, phone orders are no longer an option. I asked the woman at the register if there are any plans to go to online ordering. There are not. I told her I would not be back until they get online ordering. One customer in line was chagrined to learn that the restaurant accepts only cash payments --- he wanted to pay with a card. Not to worry --- Ankers has an ATM machine. So, this new Ankers not only does not want to spring for the costs of online ordering or card processing --- they are only too happy to increase the cost of your meal by the amount of the ATM transaction fee. Complete and utter disregard for the customer --- the "bottom line" is apparently all that matters to Ankers. Now, the food. If I wait in line for 40 minutes to pay $11.99 for a dinner of fish, fries and cole slaw, the food had better be spectacular. Especially so, given that a "pre-renovations" paper menu that I have (the one I used to be able to call in orders from) shows that the pre-renovations cost of this meal was $8.25. The fish --- meh. The bland fries appear to be made not from fresh potatoes, but from frozen pre-cuts. For $11.99, I expect crispy, perfectly-seasoned, hand-cut fries! I need to amend what I told the woman at the register. The only way I would even consider returning to Ankers is if they offer online ordering AND hand-cut fries. At this point all I can say is: "Ankers --- Away!" What a disappointment. read more

Ok... they have sweet potato fries, huge plates of shoestring fries, artichoke salad (add your own pasta), fried mushrooms and brocoli, which is great because im vegan. Smells like a clam roll, from a block away, which makes me feel like im on vacation at the beach :) I'm pretty sure this place exists solely for those who believe they are being good Christians, and not eating meat on Friday. Love their pierogis (I know, getting pierogis at a fish house is a tad strange) but they are amazing! The only thing I would say I don't like is that they don't accept cards, they do have an ATM but nobody likes ATM fees. But that definitely doesn't stop me from eating here! read more
